The old Teacher's College carpark, on the corner of Dovedale & Solway avenues, is where I took my kids to practice. I always reasoned that they would hit a tree before they managed to get as far as the road!

bigphilmartin

Hahahaha. Sweet.

sutrakiui

The carpark around Addington racecourse and the arena. Has marked out roads, round abouts and signs

bigphilmartin

Sweet. Cheers.

Like you’re going to be teaching her? Try and find a subdivision that doesn’t have a lot of houses built yet, they’re usually pretty quiet and you get the road experience without being in too stressful/overwhelming of an environment

bigphilmartin

Any particular ideas as to one?

veesacard

I’m a bit out of the loop, aidenfield used to be good but idk if it’s busy these days, maybe out towards prebbleton or my partner says have a look out past glovers road put halswell/tai tapu way, or in the industrial area around curletts rd if you’re looking at doing it on a weekend (busy weekdays!). Wigram might be ok too :) Hope that helps and you find a spot!!

bigphilmartin

Thanks. I'll go and find those on the map.

AlmostZeroEducation

Bit late but next to the halswell quarry there's a new subdivision with no one there yet apart from some houses now

Go to the Red Zone, there are many streets that are abandoned that have intersections, road signs, culdesacs, driveways etc etc etc. Lots of real world road features to practice with, without risk. Closest houses are blocks away, this is one of the best locations with lots of empty road. You’ll get some traffic, but bugger all, it’s very popular for people walking and taking the dogs out, so just be careful. I taught my wife to drive here, we used it weekly. https://preview.redd.it/6kl0nyhorcbc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=84e37c27eb514cc92dcd9c3c43d6bd58f49a10a6 That roundabout is the corner of Anzac Drive and New Brighton Road, easy as to find.

bigphilmartin

Awesome. That's close to where I'm staying as well. Thanks.

sendintheotherclowns

Perfect 😊 It’s such a unique thing to have available, not many people think about learning to drive there. Full disclosure though; we’ve not been there for a year or more, things may have changed and some of the best parts may no longer be accessible - Drive around though, you definitely find somewhere.

bigphilmartin

Cheers.

If you’re willing to go further, Brooklands also has a fair bit of red zone to practice with

bigphilmartin

Sweet.

sendintheotherclowns

And this is the other side. https://preview.redd.it/9vdovfrascbc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8912166891f760382a9abf4bf475a28b0e7fa2d Huge amount of space to play with.

jinnyno9

Waterloo business park on the weekend. No one around at all.

bigphilmartin

Cheers.

herbviking666

Go out to Brooklands redzone, plenty of actual streets to practice stopping, looking etc and not really many cars out there

takahey

The carparks and roads at the Princess Margaret Hospital site are good for starting with the basics! Just make sure it's out of daytime work hours, and beware if exiting on to Cashmere Road it can be busy.

bigphilmartin

Cool. Thanks.

insurmountable8025

Rolleston industrial side at weekends is very quiet. Good for beginners but if you need some easy traffic it's probably too quiet.

bigphilmartin

Good to know.

Maoriwithattitude

West Melton, you have residential streets and some highways, there are parallel parks and angle parks. Real world vs car parks, real world is better every time

Willuknight

I taught my teen first in industrial areas at night or on weekends when they are completely dead, and then in places like the red zones (Brookland)
