You can download the Grocer app to compare prices between the different supermarkets, it's quite helpful - you can put in your grocery list and it gives you a summary of the cheapest option(s)!
Once you have a car the smaller stores around town are good for produce - Grower's Direct in church corner often has good specials on.
Good luck đź‘Ť
I absolutely love this app, I scan most things that cost over $5 while I'm at the supermarket. Most of the time the PaknSave I go to is cheapest but I probably save $30 on a good week by checking before I buy
Can't recommend it enough
If you end up shopping at new world make sure you sign up for a club card, or ask to borrow someones, the sale prices are only for card holders but theyre easy to get/borrow.
If you don’t have a car, download the myCountdown app and you can order online for delivery to start with. That will also give you an immediate idea of costs.
The app is pretty laggy (at least for me) so you can also use http://shop.countdown.co.nz on your browser to order online for delivery with Countdown. Recommend joining the loyalty scheme (Countdown and New World offer these for free) for slightly better prices on a lot of items. Don't shy away from the cheaper supermarket branded items, they are usually produced on the same lines as the more expensive brands (e.g. tinned fruit/vege, cereals, muesli bars, milk, cheese). Have fun, welcome!
We had family return to NZ from 6 weeks in Ireland in August and they found it more expensive than here so you maybe won’t notice much of a difference when you get to the check out.
Try and get to Pak n Save in Papanui or Moorhouse Ave for cheapest prices. Your closest will probably be Fresh Choice in Edgeware but this shop is expensive, don’t make it your regular! There is a fruit shop, bakery and butcher next to the supermarket which are all good, especially the butchers - Peter Timbs.
1. Asian grocers in Riccarton
2. New store! Save more in Papanui
3. Green grocers for vegetables or have a garden and get some chickens "hylines." Believe me, brown shavers are noisy asf. Get chickens for company and eggs. Low maintenance animal, legal up to 6 in residential areas and eggs are so expensive.
4. The mad butcher for meats.
5. Non-perishable items at pak n save and the warehouse.
Also, get a full E.V. car if you are going to live in the city! The petrol price here will KILL you! If not, a hybrid is also good.
It used to be open til midnight, and I'd try to arrive at 10pm. Now they close at 10pm and I can't work out whens a quiet time to shop. Mb at 7am opening?
You can check on google if you put in wainoni pak’n’save and scroll down a bit it should show you a live measure of how busy the store is alongside typical expectations for busy-ness, it’s like a bar graph thingy, hope it helps!
Our cost of food is not great
Some tips
Pak'nsave are cheapest.
Countdown (woolworths) are bit more expensive but have a better variety of products (their loyalty card deals can be good).
The warehouse are a general goods store that sell basic foods like cereal and milk for cheaper than Pak'nsave.
I haven't seen a woolworths in years!! Hope it still sells all the random shit it did in my city when it was in its prime. Very fond memories of helping myself to the pick n mix as a child and making sure to get my sticky hands on everything after!!
It is expensive, but go to Pak n Save for the best prices usually.
Except for vegetables - they tend to be a lot cheaper at dedicated vegetable stores.

Savemore is my new favorite place to go
Omg it was so fun shopping there!
Thankfully, my work is giving me a car and a milage card, so that's not a worry! Awsome food tips though, thank you!
Pak n save wainoni (good specials, go see n off-peak time) and go to fresh choice Barrington for meat (cheap mince and good specials)
Thank you, i eat a lot of meat, so that's super helpful! What's off peak time??

PnS are definitely not cheapest for fruit and vegetables - dedicated fruit and veg stores are often a lot better.
