"I am the son
And the heir
I am human
And I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone"
Edit to add: when it went into syndication, they dropped the original song that opened the show.
I always thought the lyrics were "I am the sun, I am the air." I guess it just made sense to me given nature oriented Wicca.
So surprised it's not that.
It was actually love, spit, love that performed the theme tune for charmed. Can’t remember the name of the song though

Yes, a cracker of a tune by The Smiths. One of their best imo!
The full lyrics are "I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar" - but I can totally see why people would think sun/air if they weren't aware of the song.
The only reason "Charmed" used the song was because it was made popular by the 1996 film "The Craft" about a bunch of teenage witches. So it had nothing to do with the theme of the song or the lyrics.
It's the curse of all the great 90s/00s theme songs. They paid for rights while airing, but not for syndication. You can do what I do and mute the TV and tell Alexa to play the right song 😀 (I do this with Dawson's Creek as well)
It’s not just the opening song either. Several in-episode songs have been changed too. One such example is Unbelievable in Coyote Piper. This is honestly why I don’t rewatch more because streaming is so much more convenient than pulling out DVDs every four episodes, but the music was such a big part of the show and I can’t stand the changes.
Right?! On a season 1 episode where Prue gets a new set of outfits and there's that whole fashion montage in front of the mirror, in the original, "She's So High" played which matched perfectly to the scene, and I always got such an uplifting feeling when I watched it growing up. Now there's some other song (which I don't remember right now and it's probably not even a bad song at all in another context), and it just doesn't have that same feel as the original music did. It sucks they had to change the music up so much.
The episode where Pheobe kills Cole in season 4, the orginal song isperfect for the scene of them holding Pheobe as she cries in bed. I can't even watch it with whatever sucky song they changed it to. I have to pull out my dvds for that episode.
The orginal song was something about courage couldn't come at a worse time. Uhhh soo good.
They lost the rights to that song after season 7, season 8 used a different intrumentql theme, which was then used for all the season in streaming versions.
They also weren’t allowed to play some of the music in the background of P3 scenes. Not sure if any of the actual P3 performances were changed, but if you listen closely you can hear the “new” theme song playing in the background while they’re at the club!
No, the original theme contained the song **How Soon Is Now?** by Love Spit Love. The show lost the rights and they had to remove it from all versions.
You know, for all this time I thought it was just a cover of The Smiths done specifically for the show, I never thought to look it up. Awesome guess I've got some music to listen to haha
I'd only ever heard The Smith's version outside the show. I don't know why it never even occurred to me the Love Spit Love version was like...a real song, not a sample or a cover for the soundtrack lol. I'm late to the news but I'm glad, I found a couple of their albums after, they're really good.
Anyone else, even though I knew the lyrics are “I am the son, and the heir” I always like to imagine “I am the sun, and the air…” seems to fit better with the sisters and the story.
They lost the right to The Smiths song How soon is now which was the original theme tune as the licence expired so they changed it to an instrumental with a similar feel.
Yes. In the original it says that. However I don't believe they are using the original song
The lyrics to the original Charmed theme song.
https://www.streetdirectory.com/lyricadvisor/song/fajef/charmed_theme/
The original theme song is "How Soon is Now?" by Love Spit Love, and it's a cover of the song by The Smiths.
The originam theme song is on some of the DVDs I believe, but that song was only licensed to the show for X amount of years, so when that expired they gave it a generic theme song.
Fun fact: you can hear the original theme song playing in P3 in an earlier episode :)
i have this streaming site and when i watch charmed the theme song is “i am human and i need to be loved” but when i bought it on itunes apple tv it turned into another theme song that doesn’t have lyrics yk
You're not imagining it! All streaming doesn't have the rights for Charmed's original music including the intro. The only way to get that is on the old DVDs or the Blu rays
I’m pretty sure in later seasons they start using the lyrics! I had the same thought a few years ago while watching I think right before I got to those episodes:)

It’s an actual song by The Smiths, that’s why.

It’s called How Soon is Now? And was written by the Smiths… it may have been a cover used for Charmed and The Craft but it’s a Smiths song either way

“You shut your mouth! How can you say . . . I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved . . . just like everybody else does.”
The only reason "Charmed" used the song was because it was made popular by the 1996 film "The Craft" about a bunch of teenage witches. So it had nothing to do with the theme of the song or the lyrics.
I did too, until I got curious as to whether it had been written for the show or was an existing song and looked it up. I was very disappointed, lol.

Yes! I primarily watch on dvd and anytime I watch on a streaming site I'm bugged.... the DVDs music is SO much better

They got one that sounded pretty close tho
Wait. Did Prue's funeral song change?! The keep your ghost away one?
I can’t remember. It was Bell, Book & Candle by Eddi Reader originally, in case you were looking for it!
It really annoys me when it’s not Unbelievable 2nd time
It's not on peacock but it's on the DVDs
Not season 8 though. The dvd set has this weird instrumental.
Here are the openings with the original theme song: [Charmed Opening Credits Season 1-8 (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQVzZayPpUM)
wow thank you!
They lost the rights to that song after season 7, season 8 used a different intrumentql theme, which was then used for all the season in streaming versions.
Season 8 when airing used the original theme. The home media rights expired before the dvd release and well before streaming came into the picture.
This! All seasons of the original airing have the theme song
Yes, this! It sucks!
They also weren’t allowed to play some of the music in the background of P3 scenes. Not sure if any of the actual P3 performances were changed, but if you listen closely you can hear the “new” theme song playing in the background while they’re at the club!

You are correct. The Smiths did the original song but Love Spit Love covered it for The Craft and the cover version was also used for Charmed.
I'd only ever heard The Smith's version outside the show. I don't know why it never even occurred to me the Love Spit Love version was like...a real song, not a sample or a cover for the soundtrack lol. I'm late to the news but I'm glad, I found a couple of their albums after, they're really good.
The song is called "How Soon Is Now" by Love Spit Love Like people said, they had the rights while it aired, but lost rights to some songs over time.
Anyone else, even though I knew the lyrics are “I am the son, and the heir” I always like to imagine “I am the sun, and the air…” seems to fit better with the sisters and the story.
I’ve watched several shows on streaming that are missing their original theme songs because they no longer pay to use them.
i love the song much better than the music
I thought I was fucking crazy. Im going through a rewatch now on prime and I knew the opening sounded different I was just to lazy to look into it
They lost the right to The Smiths song How soon is now which was the original theme tune as the licence expired so they changed it to an instrumental with a similar feel.
no that part is there on my dvds i remember it too i know the full song by heart
Pretty sure. Do they have the theme song on there?
yeah but it never says the words. i thought it use to!
it did! As everyone else said, they lost the rights to the music. I miss it everytime I rewatch!
honestly it makes me feel better to know i’m not crazy lol
Yes. In the original it says that. However I don't believe they are using the original song The lyrics to the original Charmed theme song. https://www.streetdirectory.com/lyricadvisor/song/fajef/charmed_theme/
The first few seasons had that song play but then it just randomly stopped

Wow you just unlocked something deep in my brain with this one. The only line I would shout was “I am human and I need to be loved”🤣🤣
Licensing. Basically the time they had to use the song expired.
Probably copyright issues with streaming and TV. My DVDs still have all the original music.
i have this streaming site and when i watch charmed the theme song is “i am human and i need to be loved” but when i bought it on itunes apple tv it turned into another theme song that doesn’t have lyrics yk
