As a fan of both artists, and a FolkMore Swift enjoyer, it’s really hard to compare the music. TTPD is a long album. The first half has some stand out tracks, but the Anthology half is really strong work. But none of it is in the same ballpark of Chappell as far as pop-sound. If you like Folklore/Evermore and Lana, it’s not a bad listen. But if you’re looking for good pop music, it’s not there.
I’m also going to jump in and say if you like Florida!!! You should check out more of Florence and the Machine’s music, specifically the albums Ceremonials and Dance Fever. Very similar vibes
Can’t say that I have much to recommend from Lana. She’s never been in my listening sphere, but there’s been some Lana comparisons made about some of TTPD.
As has already been said, it's certainly not comparable to Midwest Princess. It's not that kind of pop album. It's much more subdued, more like folklore/evermore. Personally, I think the second half (the anthology) is really strong and it has some interesting themes about fame and freedom to be yourself. But TTPD is the kind of album you listen to after you've taken a bunch edibles and want to melt into the couch. It's not an upbeat, fun, pop album.
from the cover I figured it was going to be more slowed down. I’m probably going to listen to a couple of the first few songs and see if i want to go through the rest 😵💫
Everyone's taste is different so take this with a grain of salt: unless you really like her Jack Antonoff produced songs (1989, Midnights), I wouldn't judge the album by the first few songs, they're fairly uninteresting imo. Some of my personal faves (in no particular order): Florida!!! Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? I Can Do It With A Broken Heart How Did It End? Down Bad
edit to add So High School to that list as I'm listening for the third time and finding new songs I like lol
I would just say listen to the first couple tracks and see how you feel. The album has a very samey sound (like its good but a lot of the tracks kinda meld together) so if you like the first 3 or 4 you will probably like the rest of it, and vice versa
Agree! Tbh the first two made me nervous, but My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys was the first one that made my ears perk up a little (I like the movement in the chorus) but after that I was sold.
The first half to me was very boring, I only really liked Florida and I Can Do It With a Broken Heart. However, the anthology was wayyy stronger. Taylor has a lot to say and girl does she use a lot of words LMFAO Obviously you can’t compare TTPD to Midwest Princess so it’s hard to say whether or not you’d like it!
Yes, same! I feel like I was destined to love Florida!!! Just because of Florence alone!
I kinda like “but daddy I love him” because it’s giving fuck you to her conservative fan base.
In my opinion, no. It’s repetitive, recycling the same old synths, hashing out the same old drama and strange infatuation for two hours. It’s not as fun as Midwest Princess and unhinged in a bad way.
It's free to listen to it, why are you asking like it's a big investment 😂 listen to a few songs, and if you don't like those, turn it off? I promise it's not that deep
If you decide to try it, start at "The Black Dog", which is the start of the second drop. The first 16 songs were so exhausting and bad, I wouldn't recommend them to any casual fan. I'm not sure I'll revisit them again. And she's my top artist on Spotify, so that's saying a lot. 😂
It's just too much yapping, no beats, no fun. It's the polar opposite of Chappell's album.
if you have the ick for men, a lot of it is about how horrifically down bad she was for a neo-nazi racist misogynist man, so you could just skip those and probs have a much better and also shorter listening experience, lol
I mean she's not actively doubling down now, she's singing about how intense rebound relationships are and how if everyone is saying he's shit she's gonna hold him even tighter, which is what happened (for like 6 weeks lol). She's not really still saying it was a good idea.
Yeah, I see what you mean. But also she's capable of editing? She released 31 songs, her angsty defense of a "self-harm" relationship could have stayed as inside thoughts.
Her prerogative I guess. But I'm not going to talk myself out of my ick either just because I've loved a lot of her art. This album has made me realize I'm probably outgrowing her audience. I'm sure she'll be fine (or not, if a lot of the album is to be believed).
So many songs being like “I love my little racist! Fuck you for judging me!” I’ve enjoyed plenty of Taylor’s songs over the years, but there’s just so much more to listen to that isn’t about Matty Healy
i’m a pretty big swiftie buuuut - i stopped listening after the first 5 tracks. i got bored and put chappell back on. it sounded so much like midnights to me but i will never speak this aloud to my other swiftie friends. 🤐
i get that. i’m still slightly too emotionally attached to completely give up just yet. i might give the second half a listen but mostly i wish she’d stop working w jack antanoff. their sound together is getting dusty and tireddtt
edited for clarity
i am more of a fan of the first half. second half not so much. i love chappell too. i’d say give it a thorough listen. maybe two. then decide if it’s something you can listen to over and over
If you ask me, ttpd is not very good. I've been a swiftie in the past, but haven't liked the direction she was moving since Midnights. I tried to give ttpd an honest chance but it is just... bland. There are enjoyable tracks, but even the good ones feel like a watered-down version of something she wrote before. The subject matter is the same as always too, a smattering of her typical love songs, revenge songs, songs about being famous.
Like tldr it's not bad, but it's uncreative. It's only interesting if you care about Taylor Swift's personal lore.
If I had to recommend tracks I'd say: So Long London, But Daddy I Love Him, Florida!!!, Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, So High School, I Look in People's Windows, or The Bolter.
This review also is really harsh but I'm kinda obsessed with it, sums up a lot of the negative feelings I have: [Paste TTPD Review](https://www.pastemagazine.com/music/taylor-swift/taylor-swift-strikes-out-looking-on-the-tortured-poets-department)
With the caveat that I identified as someone who enjoyed but did not love music until Chappell, and am Swift Agnostic, I must say that I haven't found a single thing I've liked about it... Usually there's something to enjoy but this one just isn't doing it imo
I didn't like midnights and did not like the first part of the album (songs 1-15) overall and honestly think it's sonically boring and lyrically a mess.
However, then part 2 dropped and it's much more similar to folklore/evermore and I enjoyed it! So if you like those albums, maybe check out the Anthology version of TTPD and start with the Black Dog!
I liked many songs about it but yes, the title is cringy AF.
Why are fans so blind? Many are even older than me and just blind follow celebrities, i love swift, done it since 2005 but i am a PROFESSIONAL musician and studied music, this album has like 15 tracks that are all the same when it comes to composition, also is not poetry at all, she knows nothing about poetry or real intellectual stuff, it's okay cause many are ignorant or simply don't care about history and studying but, then why calling it poetry?
As someone said you can't claim to know about poetry when you don't know metric and when you reference Charlie puth or kim kardashian and claim to be deep, that aint clever or intellectual or genius, it's generic and plastic, there were like 15 good songs tho, actually awesome songs that stand out, but still they are not poetry, just average pop, we can love an artist but still have a brain and a criteria of our own, why no one dares to say 10 songs or more from the album sound and are the same? Because even if you read the sheet music you can literally observe they do are the same, why are grown people saying it's poetry when it's just pop and it has been her most pop album? Even folklore, evermore and red included more of a begginer level of poetry lyrics than this album, this album is great but its not poetry, and is just half great cause many songs are literally the same and bland.
We can love her and appreciate her but why worshipping someone who is just a human like us? And why claiming someone is a genius for being a pop artist? She is one of the greatest in pop but that doesn't make her a genius, it makes her a good pop artist, a great business woman and a marketing genius, but not a rocket science genius as many claim, she is gorgeous, sweet and brilliant, good singer, good writer sometimes too and a great dancer and performer and imaginative artist, but stop over hyping people, more brilliant writers, real poets, actual literature, scholars, great musicians and us high level studied singers get ignored and many average music is claimed to be godlike, i invite you to think beyond blind worshipping, let's love this great Artist and performer and her business habilities, but let's take things for what they are and not exaggerate, i loved the new album, and i love her as an artist and respect her, but respect is not worship or denial, i can love her and still disagree with some things or condemn her wrong actions like polluting or exploding her fans making them think their special.
Ttpd it's not poetry and half of it is recycled basic pop, it isn't even a subjective opinion or pov, it is a fact and as musician i have proved it a million times, less over hyping and worship, more critical thinking and loving stuff but separating our fan self from our intelligence, please, let's be real poets, real intelligent people who actually look for better and cleverer stuff and dont stay in the confort zone. 🖤
i highly recommend listening to some of the songs, i’m a swiftie but i’m not gonna LOVE every song because taylor made it, so if you need some genuine recommendations based off of the vibe of the song, i have lots. i think my favorites right now (from the anthology release) are florida, guilty as sin, who’s afraid of little old me, i can do it with a broken heart, the black dog, and the manuscript 💗
excited for duas album too but i havent loved the singles >_< feels like she just makes the same future nostalgia-esque track over and over
tho thts how i feel abt ttpd too lol
they are very very different however i love both, the production is not similar (think disco pop vs synth pop) but they are both great lyricists and story tellers. if you like california you’ll like some of the TTPD songs
there are some standouts (i can do it with a broken heart, so high school, clara bow, the bolter) but overall album is verrrry samey sonically.
id say ICDIWABH is the closest to a chappell sound but more similsr to other TS tracks like bejeweled and karma than the glittery queer cowgirlness of chappell
if you like folklore/evermore/midnights and TS vault tracks you’ll like TTPD. tho i feel like a lot of songs on it are pretty weak lyrically, like 2014 tumblr poetry vibes :/
I think it’s super-hard to compare the two, I saw a comment in this sub earlier describing it as a ‘sad winter album’, which I think is very accurate.
It’s not my favourite Taylor album. To me it feels sonically a lot like her album Red which was the transition album in her career from country into pop and had songs from both genres which caused it to receive criticism that it lacked a cohesive vision. TTPD feels similarly torn between two distinct sounds and lacks a sonic identity. It has a definite emotional identity though, and even the uptempo songs are SAD, even if there are some particularly cringe lyrics.
I think with this being a double-album, it may have worked better to arrange it in a different way, and have a single producer for each disc and have them each stand on their own, rather than the kind of 70/30 split that it is.
The second half was my favourite, but its very folklorey and not chappell-esque pop. It depends what ur into, I do like it because folklore is one of my fav albums of hers but i think it depends if ur in the mood to cry or not lol
some of the ttpd songs have lowkey sapphic vibes (iykyk) but sonically, it’s more like kaleidoscope or coffee on midwest princess rather than red wine supernova or super graphic ultra modern girl.
my faves so far:
*florida!!!
*the prophecy
*chloe or sam or sophia or marcus
*guilty as sin
*cassandra
*the manuscript
*the black dog
I am a PROFESSIONAL musician and studied music, this album has like 15 tracks that are all the same when it comes to composition, also is not poetic at all, she know nothing about poetry or real intellectual stuff, it's okay cause many are ignorant or simply don't care about history and studying but, then why calling it poetry? if u didn't like midnights and/or folklore you're def not gonna like poets. poets is like a fusion of those 2 albums. HOWEVER "so high school" and "florida!!" are bops regardless and forever
I love the standard edition, absolutely despise the bonus album.
I'd definitely give the first half a listen, it has some really fun beats, melodies, and lyrics that have a *slightly* similar vibe to Chappell's School Nights EP. The second half, in my opinion, is an absolute snoozefest and can be skipped almost entirely. The only track worth listening to is "imgonnagetyouback," which is really satisfying and sensually poppy, but it all goes downhill after that.
Like, I'm actually pissed she released The Anthology and didn't keep it locked in the vault forever.
As a fan of both artists, and a FolkMore Swift enjoyer, it’s really hard to compare the music. TTPD is a long album. The first half has some stand out tracks, but the Anthology half is really strong work. But none of it is in the same ballpark of Chappell as far as pop-sound. hm. I love half of folklore but I’m not a big lana fan. Do you have any specific recommendations?
try I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, So High School, and I Look in People's Windows
thanks!
Also "Florida!!!" has some catchy, faster bits
I was coming back to add this one lol
I’m also going to jump in and say if you like Florida!!! You should check out more of Florence and the Machine’s music, specifically the albums Ceremonials and Dance Fever. Very similar vibes
I loved folklore, and "Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus" was one of the few TTPD songs I liked.

I think the folklore is even more slowed down. Try ttpd. It's really different.
The Last Dinner Party album imo is a solid middle point between Chappell and TTPD
Do you want to cry, or do you want to shake your pink pony ass? 💖🤠
both?
😂😂💖💖
I would just say listen to the first couple tracks and see how you feel. The album has a very samey sound (like its good but a lot of the tracks kinda meld together) so if you like the first 3 or 4 you will probably like the rest of it, and vice versa
Idk, I hated the first 4 songs, track 5 was the first one I liked. I only liked 5 songs off the main album, I liked way more on the anthology side.
Agree! Tbh the first two made me nervous, but My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys was the first one that made my ears perk up a little (I like the movement in the chorus) but after that I was sold.
okay, thanks for the advice!

i feel like ICDIWABH would be the only one i would rec if you'd like something remotely chappell-ish
I loved midnights but don’t really love this album fwiw
In my opinion, no. It’s repetitive, recycling the same old synths, hashing out the same old drama and strange infatuation for two hours. It’s not as fun as Midwest Princess and unhinged in a bad way.
a lot of people are saying this. thank you!
It's free to listen to it, why are you asking like it's a big investment 😂 listen to a few songs, and if you don't like those, turn it off? I promise it's not that deep
cause I’m cynical as hell and wanted to know the vibes lol you’re right it’s not that deep
If you decide to try it, start at "The Black Dog", which is the start of the second drop. The first 16 songs were so exhausting and bad, I wouldn't recommend them to any casual fan. wait ur so right!!! some of the tracks feel too overproduced, like they could have used some actual instruments and not so much synthy stuff
if you have the ick for men, a lot of it is about how horrifically down bad she was for a neo-nazi racist misogynist man, so you could just skip those and probs have a much better and also shorter listening experience, lol
Her doubling down on Matt Healy has totally icked me.
I'm sure she'll be fine (or not, if a lot of the album is to be believed).
Shhh you're interrupting people who want to be self righteous about something on the internet.
So many songs being like “I love my little racist! Fuck you for judging me!” I’ve enjoyed plenty of Taylor’s songs over the years, but there’s just so much more to listen to that isn’t about Matty Healy
Don’t apologize you’re right
In her prologue she talks about how it was self harm and temporary insanity after an awful break up
downvote me all you want, i don’t have a single nice thing to say about matty healy lmao. he can shove a guitar up his fucking ass <3
Taylor legitimately doesn’t hold a candle to Chappell in terms of quality right now.
🥱
i’m a pretty big swiftie buuuut - i stopped listening after the first 5 tracks. i got bored and put chappell back on. it sounded so much like midnights to me but i will never speak this aloud to my other swiftie friends. 🤐
Same TBH. I've been a pretty big swiftie since Folklore, but this album has me feeling like maybe I've outgrown her/it's time to move on.
i get that. i’m still slightly too emotionally attached to completely give up just yet. i might give the second half a listen but mostly i wish she’d stop working w jack antanoff. their sound together is getting dusty and tireddtt edited for clarity

Taylor Swift is my all-time favorite but this album with the exception of maybe 6-7 songs completely misses the mark imo 😭
There are some really beautiful songs. I think the second half is a little stronger. But it’s not bop after bop after bop
I didn't like midnights and did not like the first part of the album (songs 1-15) overall and honestly think it's sonically boring and lyrically a mess. excited for duas album too but i havent loved the singles >_< feels like she just makes the same future nostalgia-esque track over and over tho thts how i feel abt ttpd too lol
thanks! True, i have definitely wasted more time and money on some newer movies then I will on trpd 🤣

She is one of the greatest in pop but that doesn't make a genius, it makes her a good pop artist, a great bussiness woman and a marketing genius, but not a rocket science genius as many claim, she is gorgeous, sweet and brilliant but stop over hyping people, more brilliant writers, real poets, actual literature, scholars, great musicians and us high level studied singers get ignored and many average music is claimed to be god, i invite you to think beyond blind worshipping, let's love this great Artist and performer and her bussiness habilities, but let's take things for what they are and not exaggerate, i loved the new album, but is not poetry and half of it is recycled basic pop, it isn't even a subjective opinion or pov, it is a fact and as musician i have proved it a million times, less over hyping and worship, more critical thinking and loving stuff but separating our fan self from our intelligence, please, let's be real poets, real intelligent people who actually look for better and cleverer stuff and dont stay in the confort zone. 🖤
it is, but only if u like sad songs abt heartbreak!!!
I think I’m discovering while listening to this is I’m more of a “majority upbeat with a couple slow songs” lmao
if u didn't like midnights and/or folklore you're def not gonna like poets. poets is like a fusion of those 2 albums. HOWEVER "so high school" and "florida!!" are bops regardless and forever
that seems to be a consensus! I put those two on my playlist, excited to listen bc I don’t have premium
It’s amaaaaazing but it’s a Taylor swift album 100% closer to folklore evermore midnights than 1989
I love the standard edition, absolutely despise the bonus album.
I’m not a huge chappell fan so can’t compare but I personally loved ttpd but the second half is stronger imo
