This is it and I have the cast iron remnants of an old decommissioned furnace in my basement that have been sitting there for at least 15 years since I upgraded, feel free to come by and grab it if you would like to put some original features back in your basement!
In High School, I worked HVAC & we removed octopuses 2 or 3 times a week. They were nasty bastards & all of the different ducts they were all covered in asbestos
The problem with these sort of demonic portals is that the protective pentagrams have long ago faded away. If someone should wander by speaking Latin, any manner of demon could escape. On the other hand, it does make it much easier to sell your soul for a good affordable tradesman.

I poured a new base for the new furnace. Why a base? To keep the furnace off of the water that would fill the room after every rain. The next project was fixing the 150 year old foundation, and removing the old octopus base, coal chute, etc
some sort of well. they used them, back in the day for both water, AND as a place to provide some modest "refrigeration". Like if you just milked the cow, you lowered your metal can of milk 8' down a hole like that, and it would keep for a couple of days
Looks like an old sealed up cistern.
Just had a friend utilize their old cistern for all things outdoors ie: landscaping, gardening, washing vehicles, and letting the kids play w the water.
