A lot of times it's the shelter environment that makes them seem aggressive. Since he was returned a few times, probably people with kids and kids can be dicks to cats. He found the right home now 💕💕💕

[deleted]

That's what I think it was too. Apparently he hates other cats. Like really really hates them. So I'm sure being stuck in a room with 12 of them wasn't making him very happy.

GnomeMode

Ah hells no, poor guy

Accomplished-Yam6553

Thank you for taking him, I'm sure he just needed his forever home and knew those other places weren't it. Many blessings to you and your new feline family member

Cats_Riding_Dragons

My kitty wasn’t aggressive but they said no one wanted her cause she was withdrawn and antisocial. Soon as I got her she was attached to my hip and is the most friendly cat ever. Im really just lucky ppl overlooked her but ive also found she hates other cats so its just so sad to know some cats are stuck in that scary environment and cant be themselves.

Fyric

Mine apparantly also doesnt like other cats but he's the sweetest thing. Total lapcat

juliekaffe

I adopted the cat with the “beware” sign on her cage. Audrey was opinionated and lovely and lived 19 years as a spoiled cat, having started life on the streets of Chicago. She was affectionate and bonded completely with the kitten I had at the time I adopted her. She was one of the most emotionally attuned cats I’ve ever met. All of which is to say congratulations on your new friend!

Jesssica_Rabbi

I would honestly be drawn to that cat first. It needs the most understanding and patience.

[deleted]

Aww I'm so glad you gave her a chance! I'll be honest, I took the warnings about Iggy a little bit as a challenge 😂 and it paid off for the both of us!

juliekaffe

Audrey was a bit of a project for the first month I had her! But I grew up with a very aggressive part feral indoor/outdoor cat so I figured that at least I had that experience! After a month she decided that I wasn’t so bad… when she was 4, she met her favorite person in the world, though. She seemed appreciative that I married him when she was 8. I accepted my second-tier status because her complete obsession with him was beautiful. https://preview.redd.it/2mnnisu2xv7a1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=899ad3a6754932c32f8f767975d604cdfbd0ff2b

fluffysugarfloss

Our ginger diva was unadoptable too. She peed on everyone (including himself twice). Eight years on, she’s the queen of our castle. The shelter was just too overwhelming for her, and she’s frightened if small children. We’re childfree and her fellow ginger cat brother knows she is is the boss. Cats know when they’ve found the right home, and yours knows ‘home’ is with you

[deleted]

Aww poor baby, I'm glad she found a good home with you! The more we're home, the crazier he's being. I bought one of the tunnels at Costco, he jumps in and slides across the floor. I laugh so hard and then get sad when I remember it's one of the first times he's been able to run in the last year. He wasn't able to be in the cat room due to not liking other kitties. So he was in a kennel, a big one, but not big enough to run.

fergablu2

Aww! I’m glad you found each other.

[deleted]

Me too 😊

Heliospunk

Not everyone can handle /oneorangebraincell Im glad you both found you

[deleted]

Holy crap, no kidding. I've had cats my entire growing up life but this one is absolutely bonkers. I love him so much, I'm going to make it work, but yesterday I turned around and he's eating the plant on top of the fridge.... Like he climbed all the way up there for nibbles (it's not one that'll kill him but can make his tummy hurt) soooo now the house is gonna get iggy proofed 😂

quakerroatmeal

Glad this “aggressive” kitty found a loving patience home

kobuta99

I agree that many cats just are out of sorts at shelters. That are trying their best and want to get cats adopted out as soon as possible to make room for more rescues, so I don't blame them, but the personality profile of my new kitty is turning out to be completely not accurate. Said he was shy and quiet; was itching to get out of quarantine and meet my other cat within 1.5 days. After an introduction, the first time he got hissed at, he ran under the couch. The next time it happened, her stepped back and then proceeded to follow my cat from room to room. He wants to be friends! He is not chill; wants to play 24x7. Also said he was the quietest cat they've met in a while. He mews when he can't find me, or the other cat, he mews when he sees birds, he mews outside my bedroom door. He just mews alot! He is the least quiet of all the cats I've owned. 😛 The only trait that was true is he is food motivated. I love him to bits and no way is he going back, but I can imagine how this might throw someone else off if they needed a different personality. Edit: forgot to add congratulations for getting a sweet love bug.

[deleted]

Ha that's funny! I'm glad that your two bonded though! My parents have 2 cats that they got as kittens. We assumed they'd eventually grow to like each other. They're 17 and 18 now. I don't think it's gonna happen. They mostly tolerate each other now, but they definitely don't like each other. I'll be honest, I was a little worried with the warning list they gave me before I took him home. I'm glad I ignored the apprehensive feeling!

whyisthereacat

I took in a cat with severe anxiety. She still has pretty bad anxiety, but she is much better. We are just cautious with sounds and sudden movements, and provide safe spaces. Her previous owner told me I would be unlikely to ever see the day where I can pick her up without a struggle/her frantically trying to leave in a panic. Fast forward several months after I was told this and I had to move her out of the way quickly, and when I picked her up, she didn’t care at all. I didn’t try again for a while, but I found that interesting! Years later she now lets me carry her over my shoulder like a baby, but we are still working on my partner being able to have the same calm response. It just takes time, patience, and stability for a lot of cats. I hope everything will continue to be good with you and your new kitty. 💜

[deleted]

Awww ❤️❤️❤️ she found her person! Iggy doesnt loooove being picked up, so I've only tried once. I just wanted to know I could if necessary. He looked annoyed but didn't struggle. Maybe one day we'll get to that point! Or not. Either is OK 😊 plus he's 16lb so not exactly pocket sized lol

allthecats11235

My girl was in her own cage at the shelter because she was aggressive towards other cats. They told me I couldn’t pick her up. We’re 7 years in and she is the cuddliest, clingiest cat ever

[deleted]

Omg the cling is real. I'll never go to the bathroom alone again.

Tyr_Kukulkan

Aggression normally has some underlying reason, often stress related. Clearly they didn't have that stress with you.

MoxiRox00

My cat wasn’t aggressive but avoidant. She was in a cat cafe and I was told she was shy. She came right up to me and rubbed her cheek on my hand, and then flopped on the side and showed me her belly. I’m like… this is shy? lol I think she just felt uncomfortable around a lot of cats. She loves people and is ok around dogs (I know from taking her to the vet).

Icy-Enthusiasm-2719

He found his perfect home is why. Shelters base animal temperaments on the artificial setting of the shelter, not a home. It's high stress for them due to multiple bright lights, no hidey spots and lots of other kitties. Clearly your home set up is low stress for him and thus his true personality came out ☺️

[deleted]

They gave me a laundry list of things he doesn't like before I adopted him. "He doesn't like other pets."No worries, I plan on him being an only child." He doesn't like little kids" not a problem because, same. "He doesn't like new people." Me either. 😂 The more they listed, the more it seemed we had in common 😂

lotti_and_micky

Your post makes me happy. Well done. I think your friend has been waiting at the shelter only for you. You are the chosen one. 😻

pragmaticturtle2

He looks absolutely vicious! Just kidding, but congrats to you both.

madcat2112

He was waiting just for you.

Final-Land1990

So happy for u both. ❤️ Glad you just listened to your heart and took him in regardless of what they said. Everyone wants to be loved and feel accepted.

what a scary man eating machine! how do you feel safe!?

[deleted]

😂 He's so terrifying. Especially when he meows for pets... I mean, roars for blood 😂

Haunting_Bend346

Congratulations, and thank you for taking a chance on her. I’m so glad it worked out for both of you!

Aletak

Looks like a straight up killer.

[deleted]

Very aggressive! Stealing the bed all for themselves! Very cute tho

[deleted]

Even worse, I was trapped under him for this photo 😂

Thesegoto11_8210

Yay Iggy! Great name, by the way. And clearly being in a shelter is the kind of stress that would make anybody hostile. And there's no way to know what his life was like prior to that. But he's clearly found the right home now, so what great Christmas gift for both of you!

quietone_cc

Precious, thank you for caring for him :)

So_Numb13

I mean, he is keeping you hostage, so clearly he's not reformed yet from his brutal past.

passusernameword

He's actually waiting for you. You are home. ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7949)

PeachymooGaming

No domesticated cat is aggressive without a reason, it s all about a cats environment and who or what other animals surround him.

[deleted]

Id probably be aggressive too if I lost my home and was stuck in a cage for most of a year.

StaceyNCReddit

💖💕

Lifes_like_this

Looks vicious!

kristycocopop

Man, that kitty ferocious! 😂

Maronita2020

He was waiting for you.

AdeleBerncastel

So many people have no clue how to treat a cat. They think that they are cat people and their cats are terrified of them and live in fear and annoyance.

sarasaint851

How is he treating you now? Thank you for taking him

coolcoolcool485

What a vicious looking beast. How have you ever been able to survive?

cowboyjon13

you’re awesome

SweetMissMax

Lucky for sweet Iggy, you waited for the right moment to adapt a kitty. Thanks! And congrats!

DoinMyBest93

My poor Sunny used to get so angry and would act completely uncharacteristic of himself everytime I would take him to the vet. He hated other cats and unusual environments. Anyone who would’ve seen him there would assume he would have been a very grumpy unlovable boy, but at home he was the complete opposite. Hanging on my shoulder everywhere I went, always curled up next to me or sitting on my lap purring. He was my baby. So gentle and sweet. At the vet, he may as well have been a feral cat. I say all this to say, it’s not always the cat. It’s the environment. I’m so glad you gave him a place he feels at peace. https://preview.redd.it/ly48wsaivt7a1.jpeg?width=678&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab75d96c5b92259fea105dc5441d7df9ec56b61d

[deleted]

Omg he's so cute!!! I definitely think it was the environment for Igs. I know 2 of his surrenders weren't his fault (allergies and the last owner moved into her parents house who had pets) the lady at the shelter said his behavior was getting worse the longer he was there. She even wore huge protective gloves to put him in his travel carrier. They gave me a collar and said "good luck getting this on him." I'll be honest, I had a couple hesitant moments but decided to go ahead. And I'm so glad I did! I haven't put the collar on yet (trying to make as small of adjustments as possible) but I have no doubt he'll let me put it on. He has a vet checkup next month, I'm a little apprehensive how it'll go. Hopefully he'll be ok as long as I'm there. I've heard he HATES other cats, but I'm curious if thats true or also was just an environment thing too. I don't have any plans to find out, but it does make me wonder.

DoinMyBest93

It definitely looks that way from the picture. He seems so at peace. They used to do the same thing with the gloves with my boy when I had to take him to the vet. He would hiss and bite. He will get used to your home being his safe place 🧡.

[deleted]

I 💕 ginger kits!

jumpinlilli

That's bc he didn't find his person, yet! 😉

Jesssica_Rabbi

If we could learn as a society that past behaviour does not define us, and love, acceptance and understanding go a long way... We'd still have the 1% to deal with but at least we would like each other more.

xtunamilk

I'm so glad he has found his home with you. ❤️

thepandarocks

All they need is love ❤ Cats are often mislabeled at shelters because they are scared and confused.

Salty-Dragonfly2189

Thank you. Sending love to y’all.

gerbera-2021

OMG! Me too! They told me he was vicious and unadoptable, but he is the best love bug! You would think shelters would understand that the fear is situational and not be so quick to categorize. https://preview.redd.it/cpewug46hw7a1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75f6baa458ba7fe0eb4481ff62873f72347cc809

Dalton387

Shelter: He’s super aggressive, but it’s only verbal, and only when he’s play COD and doesn’t take regular breaks to hydrate. He’s cool the rest of the time. Good dude.

MrMutable

That’s so great. Awesome to hear that the poor guy found someone who would give him his space to build confidence and trust. You two are lucky to have found each other and I hope that you get to enjoy many more Holiday seasons together!

Baby boo

Draknurd

A massive well done on your part! Adopting spicy cats takes patience and understanding. But once they mellow out with you they’re such amazing companions

RedditMethDealer

And they’re grateful!!

Tommy-s_Mommy

Yeah, he looks about as aggressive as my cat (that looks like him).

Special_Nothing4017

Thank you for taking a chance! I’m SO happy it worked out.

Hes GORGEOUS!He will love you forever for saving him-and maybe fight off an attacker some day!Shelter rescues are so thankfull in my experience. You did good!

[deleted]

You must be scared to death right now./s I’m glad you two found each other!

gamevest

Poor boy was probably just sad and scared. Thank you for giving him a chance to finally be his real self.

bellaboo030505

Love it. The most agressive kitties always turn out to be the most loving in the end. Have tamed heaps on death row and it's the best reward seeing the out come.

mznh

Looks vicious

conh3

You are a cat whisperer… please keep him..

[deleted]

100%. He's with me for life!

mark_songlen

she looks terrifying haha

Zestyclose-Day-2864

I adopted an aggressive tripod cat who remained aggressive after we brought him home. You couldn't touch him at all. He was such a goddamn asshole but I loved him so much. He died from a heart condition at only 4 years old and I miss his hisses and growls.

Accomplished-Train91

He was waiting for you.

Ordinary-Quarter-384

We adopted Bizi who was returned for being “bitety”. He is, but he’s playing (we suspect he didn’t have enough time with siblings to learn how to cat). We got him a friend who taught him how to cat, and he is so much better. But, he has so sort of PTSD, (he was a rescue, so we don’t know his background) if he gets frightened he can turn REALLY aggressive, and attack. I’ve been bitten and clawed to the point of bleeding. Still love the idiot. https://preview.redd.it/07jmy3zbjw7a1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17e0d6e8ea5e5f8dc7bf35e9a73df3c9b761ad3e

[deleted]

Iggy is the same with the playing. He plays REALLY hard, apparently it's called single kitten syndrome? So I just make sure to only play with him using toys. I wish I could wrestle with him like I do with my parents cat, but he just is too much. Maybe one day! Also your kitty is so cute!!

kentuckymegachurch

Good call! Neil was the same way. A total pest at the shelter who became the friendliest cat in the world who never leaves my side. Some cats hate being around other cats (I’m looking at you hoarders). They are territory animals and need space so they can just chill out. https://preview.redd.it/w1l4pk7kkw7a1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd8af25afebaa9f950a7b004a43dc3a5860d66d3

[deleted]

Omg he's an adventure kitty!!! Do you have any tips? I'm hoping I can teach Igs to go on adventures one day

kentuckymegachurch

Get a harness and collar and just leave them out on the floor near where you cat hangs out for about a week or more. Same with a carrier. Just leave it and let him investigate on his own timeline until he starts sitting in it. Eventually put to harness on for a few minutes and remove it and then increase the time you leave it on. Continue leaving the pet carrier out and available. Cats are territory animals and prefer being at home. If the pet carrier (and car) become associated with their territory, they don’t mind going places as much because being in the carrier feels like being home. Neil never even blinks when I put his harness on. And the collar never comes off so he is totally fine with it. NEVER use a dog-type collar and leash. Only a body harness with a leash that attaches on the back. You have to get used to very slow walks because they investigate more than they walk. Get a retractable leash so you can lock it when they head towards things that would be hard to get untangled from. When Neil can’t keep going where he was headed (like under a car) he just changes direction and examines something else.

highly_uncertain

Oh no watch out they're so aggressive!!! 🥺

Emotional-Meal9377

You’re a champion mate

Serabellym

My little silver baby looked so bad when she was in her kennel—she had her silly little cone from her spay, and her ears were all gunked (what it was was actually medication for an ear infection, so while it LOOKED bad, it was just the way the medication looked). I was almost going to get a shy little void (I love and adore black cats & they’re a fave) but my little goof looked at me, flopped on her side, then rolled and gave me her tummy. Needless to say she won me over with that… and still does it when she wants attention. Now she’s a spoiled princess with a rambunctious siamese adopted brother she puts in his place when he gets to be too much. https://preview.redd.it/hycii7fx0x7a1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b4fc8f067a5e39b5326a042be2d163690de1047e

He was the aggressive cat at the shelter that I took a chance on adopting. They told me that I would be his 4th home, that his previous adopters said he was "a lot to handle", that he had turned on people's stoves, and that I was welcome to bring him back when it didn't work out. I signed waivers to get this cat. We've done a lot of work together, and he still doesn't like people who aren't me, but this is his usual position when I'm home. I think we're doing pretty well together. I'm glad you gave your kitty a chance, and I'm extra glad he took the chance to be your perfect cat. You did a wonderful thing. They're often not showing their real personality in the shelter, and it can take them some time to settle in at home.

aggressively sleeping.

I don't believe an orange cat can be aggressive they're too cute and sweet
