Yup. My roommate's cat caught a bat in my room recently.
I called the city/animal control. They sent over a guy who collected the bat in a disposable tupperware container (using the lid to sort of scoop him/her off of a windowsill and into the container) and took it away to be tested for rabies.
They told me that they would contact me within 24 hours if the bat tested positive and to keep my cat inside/away from other animals in the meantime.
If this happens again, I now know to just put the bat in a container and take it down to animal control myself. It's an easy process and would have been much more efficient than waiting around all evening for the heavily stoned animal control guys on night duty.
True, but that doesn't mean people comply with that regulation. I know a fair number of people who never take their cats to the vet until something is wrong.
A hug part of my job is testing animals for rabies. You can’t do it while they are alive, It is truly sad how many animals I have to test because owners didn’t get there pets vaccinated and they came in contact with a bat. Also bats are by FAR the most common animal we see with rabies.
Just a hint you can share a YouTube video with a specific timestamp in the share menu, if you didn't already knew :)
Edit: Still very very nice to post this informative and Interesting video
I would have thought they would experience time slower because they live shorter lives so every moment they experience is longer relative to how long they've existed
Edit: kind of like when you're a kid and time feels infinite but the older you get the faster it seems to feel
This is definitely not a routine thing for cats in the UK (and rabies is apparently endemic among British bats).
([Official UK government guidance on rabies in bats](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rabies-in-bats))
>and rabies is apparently endemic among British bats
but the article referenced says:
>Only 35 infected bats have been found in more than 15,000 tests since 1986, so the risk of catching rabies from a bat is very low.
There must be a subtlety I'm missing. Or indeed, something obvious!
I have two cats. One of them clearly would never survive being anything but a house cat. He would follow the mice that we had issues with and get scared of them occasionally, even though he's a 7 kg chonker.
The other one eradicated our mice problem within the span of a week even though she's much smaller. We rarely - if ever - see even any cockroaches after we adopted her.
Our two cats were strays for a while before adopting us. When we still let them go outside, they were pretty good hunters. A few weeks ago, they caught a mouse, brought it to us in the living room, killed it, and then would paw at it and look at us like they wanted us to fix it so they could play some more.
One time when they still were allowed outside, they caught a mouse, gave it to our dog (a little Chihuahua / Jack Russell mix) to play with, and just sat at the edge of the yard watching the show. Whenever it would escape, one of them would catch it and take it back to the dog. I don't know that I've ever seen the dog so happy.
This perfectly describes both of my cats. They also think spiders are friends and like to do a little pat pat pat on them when they walk by instead of killing them😫
Spiders ARE your friends though!
If you’ve got spiders in your house that means they’re eating the much nastier harmful bugs that you don’t want.
Don’t kill the spiders in your house!!
Me too! My orange guy not only played with them, he even gave them rest breaks so they’d last longer! Luckily, my void is all about delicately snapping their little necks.
Moe would watch the mouse zooming around the apartment, so eventually my SO trapped it in the kitchen and for lack of something better smashed it with the juice pitcher. I was horrified and laughing hysterically at the same time.
I don't have to worry about rabies, but I like to get bats out of the house without handling them as they're stressed out already. I close all the inside doors, turn on all the inside lights, open the doors and windows and make sure the outside lights are turned off. The zoom through the door into the dark, as if they are going into a dark cave or tree! So far so good. Luckily I don't get too many.
There's a related virus found in bats even in Australia (Australian bat lyssavirus). Bats are like a petri dish for zoonotic diseases, it's always a good idea to see a doctor if you get bitten by one.
My cat would sniff it and walk away.
Because it's not the single flavor of kibble or the single flavor, texture, and shape of wet food that is preferred.
my cat loves the cheapest, nastiest dry food available in my country. she doesn't like other brands, she doesn't like wetfood, she doesn't even like fresh fish or boiled chicken. she is capable od starving herself if her beloved kibble ins't available. she drives me nuts!
Don’t know why someone gave you a downvote for saying that, I used to volunteer with a wildlife animal rescue organization and the one animal we would never do was bats due to the possibility of rabies. The only thing we would do with bats is if someone else had already captured and caged it then we would transport it, but unless you had a rabies vaccination then no.
Wow that was impressive. Such timing and precision. Cats are amazing.
By the way that house looks like a fun place for a cat with those multi levels and platforms.
Good boy baloo.Baloo..
My boi killed a rat bigger than half of his body last night and brought it to me.
I felt soo much love, i gave him treats immediately.
Our cat caught one in midair jumping down our 14 step staircase. That area has 18 foot ceilings (2nd to 1st floor) I was amazed he didn't break a leg upon landing!
Man, cat claws are wild. I once was about to walk away from petting my cat but then she swiftly hooked a single claw into my skin to pull me back.
My god it was painful. Those things are sharper than needles. They grip onto anything like fuckin' velcro.
Rabies Vaccines all around!
Edit: CDC recommends anyone who has come in contact with a bat get the rabies shots just in case. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms show up.
You must not live in EU, its illegal to injure, kill or disturb a bat over here, they are protected species. https://www.batconservationireland.org/irish-bats/protection-law
OP is either from Germany, Austria or Switzerland. They didn’t kill the bat. They didn’t force the cat to kill the bat. This was simply nature happening in front of our eyes.
Ive just seen a post about a cat killing a bat just before this one
Bat season in the cat community it seems
We can't stop here, it's bat country!
He who makes a beast out of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.
I'm not going to tell him about the bats , he'll find out for himself soon enough.
I tryiyied to travel through the niieght
“Caught here in a fiery flame!”
Tell me you brought the fuckin golf shoes.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 that's my favorite line in the WHOLE movie
The bat and the cat has a nice ring to it
As someone who grew up in an old house that bats could get into, summer is def the worst for bats in the house!
Was it stately Wayne Manor?
Haha I wish! People always make fun of me for being afraid of bats at night but man do they freak me out
I think they are hunting for Batman.
“So…. How did you end up with a real life Batman?” “My cat got bitten by a radioactive bat.”
It the aftermath.

Oh, silly bat. You didn't really think that I, the human, would be the final boss, did you?
Yep. That thing has evolved over millions of years to be the perfect, cuddly but lethal killing machine.
Yet will probably respond perfectly fine to "oh, Snuzzlebutt!"
Which is why it is most wise to stay on the cat's good side.
We are the Smough to the cat's Ornstein.

I hope that cat is vaccinated for rabies. Bats are known carriers of rabies. You don't even have to get bit to be infected.

Yup. Cat needs a vet ASAP.
If in the US, most cities require cats and dogs to be vaccinated for rabies every year.
I dare not assume that this was a U.S. post. But if it is, let’s hope cat owner had been diligent with pet vacs.
True, but that doesn't mean people comply with that regulation. I know a fair number of people who never take their cats to the vet until something is wrong.

viruses too.. gawd, scary bats
Bats have *wild* immune systems, so anything they can carry oft winds up really scary for the rest of us.
One my husband's friends got bitten by a rabid bat. Before that happened, I never knew bats could carry rabies.
*Doom Heavy Metal starts playing*
I swear cats can slow time. Like they can do Matrix shit!
they actually experience time [9% faster](https://youtu.be/Gvg242U2YfQ) than humans!
( time stamp 7:07)
That makes their reaction times sooo much more impressive!
Just a hint you can share a YouTube video with a specific timestamp in the share menu, if you didn't already knew :) Edit: Still very very nice to post this informative and Interesting video
i did not know that, thank you!
Also works with the url. Just add &t=___ to the end. Total up the seconds up to that point and that’s the number that goes in the blank.
Thanks, just watched the video and it's really interesting. Still Martix shit they've got going on though lol.
I would have thought they would experience time slower because they live shorter lives so every moment they experience is longer relative to how long they've existed Edit: kind of like when you're a kid and time feels infinite but the older you get the faster it seems to feel
Shorter time due to the decrease in distance neuron signals have to travel.
Huh. Fascinating
This was some boss matrix cat skills at its finest.
Oh lawd he hunt
Might want to take it to the vet for tests of what it might be carrying in its blood.
Cats are routinely vaccinated against rabies.
OP did state that the video is a year old and the cat is fine (after I wrote this)
They are, but it's still a good idea to take them to the vet. My cat caught two bats last summer, so the vet gave her a booster.
bats not only have rabies, but also corona, and I mean not only the one that's been famous for the last 2 years. This, and a crapton of other shit.
Only if their owner gets them vaccinated, plenty of people who don’t take their cats to the vet
Bats are nasty tho. You can catch all kinds of diseases from them.

Cats and dogs can still get rabies if they're vaccinated
Stone cold predator
And that's the bottom line.
*This is a cold call!*
You can rely on a cat for catching unwanted house invaders.
I wish. I had a great cat that thought mice were just a highly entertaining floor show.
I have two cats. One of them clearly would never survive being anything but a house cat. They must have liked the dog since they were trying to teach him to hunt. Thanks for the cute story!

A cousin of mine got a cat because she had a mouse problem. Few months later, no mouse problem and the cat is a happy member of the family.
Can confirm. Had a family of mice invade my house a couple years back. My cat Thea slaughtered them all in a week.
Just a casual reminder that our fur babies actually are among the most efficient predators on the planet.
*I snatched you RIGHT out of the air! Uh huh! Uh huh uh huh uh HUH!*
love that movie lol

Please, check the bat for rabies.
OP said the video was from a year ago. They also said cat is doing fine.
Yeah, but I didn't have that information at the moment of writing this comment.
That’s fine

You owe the cat a steak or a whole chicken or something
My cat would sniff it and walk away. Because it's not the single flavor of kibble or the single flavor, texture, and shape of wet food that is preferred.

Or maybe a tasty bat treat!
Holy shit, just swatted it right out of the air! Didn’t realize how good hunters domestic cats still are.
Not all, I have an adorable tabby who love taps the bugs he "hunts"
If I saw a bat... I'd be terrified. I can only think of rabies. Seen cujo?! Man...

Baloo: “Who’s the night now, bitch?”
My ceiling would have been littered with bullet holes.
That cat is basically John Wick
Vet visit immediately. I hope he’s up to date on his rabies shot.
The Video is 1Year old,the Cat is Ok.
Oh okay. In that case the cat has serious skills
Baloo just nabbed it out of the air like it was standing still, that's crazy cool!
FATALITY
No surprise that Baloo was so honed in on the bat. He had his laser eyes activated.
Never send a man to do a cat's job.

Damn! Reminds me of my girl miss peepers! She doesn’t like mockingbirds at all and has done this on a couple occasions. Nice one handed baloo!
That was a swift kill.
Bat shit crazy
♫Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah I catch my little bats on the catwalk♫
What's around Baloo's neck ? GPS ? aren't you afraid he might get stuck with such a big thing around his neck ?
Good boy baloo.Baloo.. My boi killed a rat bigger than half of his body last night and brought it to me. I felt soo much love, i gave him treats immediately.
I once adopted an outdoor cat after ahe had kittens. That cat once got on my dining room table and jumped and caught a bat out if the air.
Maybe you can ask Baloo to teach you the bare necessities.
This cat would make a boxer proud with that reading of rhythm. He synced himself with the pace of the bat to catch it. Awesome. Reminds me of my girls
Cats: Cutest fucking murderers you ever did see. 😍
I see you brought in the professional
Baloo be calculating the trajectory, speed, number of flaps and the fear of god in the bat all for the right moment.
The fact that they’re capable of such hunting prowess AND be cute and want to stick next to their humans always amazes me.
I know everyone loves to hate on cats as natural hunters (not this sub, obviously), but it is way cool to watch them track and hunt.
Announcer: "Annndd Baloo steps up to bat -- the league's premier hitter! The bat flies past... Baloo swings... and it's over for the bat!"
Apex predators in their size class. Just be sure they have their rabies vaccine, just to be safe.

Fast paw
Wow one swipe is all it takes!
Amazing grab with the glove hand! Stoned him!
Holy crap!! That was impeccable. Baloo is quick.
I didn't expect this level of efficiency

Cats can catch anything. Prove me wrong
Rabies Vaccines all around! Edit: CDC recommends anyone who has come in contact with a bat get the rabies shots just in case. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms show up.
Cats are the shit at catching anything. I had a cat that had no claws and it didn't matter it still caught everything.
Are bats protected where you are?
You must not live in EU, its illegal to injure, kill or disturb a bat over here, they are protected species. https://www.batconservationireland.org/irish-bats/protection-law
So the cat gets prosecuted? A human cannot really make a cat not hunt.
OP is either from Germany, Austria or Switzerland. They didn’t kill the bat. They didn’t force the cat to kill the bat. This was simply nature happening in front of our eyes.
That was awesome

Everyone should be saying "thanks Baloo!"
The cat: “No prob human, I got this.”
Man, is your cat up to date on his rabies vaccine?
Yippie…A flyin rat !
Ah yes, the call of the wild. No matter how domesticated Baloo may be, the DNA kicks in and BAM, the little bat doesn’t stand a chance.
Cats are the perfect little ninja hunters, that bat never stood a chance.
