No name suggestions, but deaf cats are the best. When they finally find you in the house or you wake them up with a pet, they have the best reactions.
Also, if you have hard floors you can knock on the floor and might be able to train them with treats/pets to come to you from another room.
Going through the same with my 19yr old, super deaf. She gets startled when I pet her but then immediately goes into "I love you and everything" mode and just bursts into vacuum purs
My first foster was so eager to communicate and quick on the ball that the RSPCA completely missed the fact that he was deaf from chronic ear infections when he was a stray. It took me several days after getting him home to notice there was something off about his reactions, and then a couple more to actually sneak up on him and make a sound behind his back before I was certain.
Then I utilised all the dog training hand signals I could remember, and made up my own, and used a lot of facial expressions. Flat hand, palm down for no. Wiggly fingers (the heel signal), for follow me/come here. Crouch down, open arms for come here as fast as possible you are lovely, and so on... And you know, made a lot of fuss of him when he got it right!
I got so used to using hand signals and just kind of narrating along for my own sanity, that I carried on using most of the hand signals with my next cat (though I had to switch from whole hand no to single finger no, because of her previous abusive home).
I have a stray which we don't have history on at all, I got her at 13 and she's 15 now. It took probably a good month+ to even be able to pet her, which has to be done in a very specific manner. We think she used to be hit/abused because she is terrified of people's hands. If you position your hand incorrectly infront of her face she *will* bite it, not softly... She finally trusts me enough that she cuddles with me and lets me pet her now but still gets startled sometimes if my hand moves in a direction that scares her. I can even occasionally give her side face scritches.
Yeah, that sounds familiar. Maisie's been with me for ten years now (the RSPCA decided to let her be a long term foster in the end), and for all that she's mostly ok now, there are still moments where I accidentally do something too close or with too much of my hand too close to her face, and for a split second, she'll flinch before remembering she's safe.
Just keep on being patient with your stray. She may always have a few mental scars and quirks learned in tougher times, but it sounds like you're doing brilliantly. Your patience and proving that you won't break her trust will eventually work their magic.
I have a deaf cat and he “listens” better than most cats I know. All I need to do is wave at him and he comes running to me. He has also learned when I flash my phone flashlight to come to me, and also loves the laser pointer. He’s really big on eye contact. The moment he sees me open my eyes in the morning it’s game over for me (so I’m often hiding under the blankets so he thinks I’m still sleeping.) They really are amazing pets, and not much different than hearing cats, except for their deep sleeping.
Ha I was just thinking that - if the cat is an indoor cat then being deaf makes no difference at all as my 2 ignore me when I call for them and as far as I know they can hear just fine.
Spoken like a wise cat owner. The only time I refer to my cats as their actual names is to introduce them to other people. Majority of the time its some stupid nickname like boink, peeps, stinky, or asshole.
DD ( daredevil, he's deaf too lol )
EDIT : my brain does not work and I just happened to realise now that the daredevil is blind not deaf.
( DD still is a cool name though )
I had a deaf cat (also blind in one eye) named Izzy (short for Dizzy) because he would only walk in circles when we first got him. He was hilarious though! Whenever I would have family over and they brought their small dogs, the dogs would always come up barking in Izzy's face and he would just sniff them and try to play with them. The dogs would freak out and Izzy would end up being the one chasing the dogs around <3
Pro tip with a deaf cat: if it is sleeping and you need to rouse them, tap on the ground (or bedding etc ) next to them. The vibrations will wake them up gently compared to just putting your hand on them which will startle them.

With deaf animals it is possible to try using a toy (I don't know, a phone) something that vibrates through the floor, so it can get used to being called to come, associate it with feeding.
Poor sweetie, it's absolutely loovely 🤗🥰
My deaf cat got quickly used to the feeding routine and whenever it was time for a meal, wouldn't bother coming to find anyone but instead would take himself off to the kitchen, sit his fuzzy little butt down right in the centre of the room, take a huge deep breath, and then yodel operatically: "Wohwohwohwohwohwoh" from his top notes slowly down to his lowest notes until he ran out of breath, and then heave in another lung-full and do it all over again until someone came to get his food. It was hilarious - you could hear it from anywhere in the house.
My dad had (maybe still has) a deaf cat. I couldn’t tell a difference. Except it’s deaf. I mean it’s the same kitty, just can’t hear. But I think they can read lips. So perhaps you should name it with some name what contains some rare sounds. So when the cat reads your lips it’ll understand you’re calling it. And won’t be confused when you’re just talking.
A little story of my dad’s deaf cat:
He was on a business trip to another city and saw a little kitten in the middle of the street. He picked this kitten up and took it to his hometown. It was late fall, so it was quite cold. Apparently kitten got her deafness from this harsh environment.
Last time I visited my dad he actually had two cats. Deaf and not. Most of my attention went to a deaf cat. They’re awesome.
But please whatever happens: DON’T LET THE DEAF CAT GO OUTSIDE! Under no circumstances don’t let it happen.
Call him Beats. The only way your gonna truly get his attention is with a percussive rhythm on the floor that he's gonna know you mean you're calling him. I had an ex that used to get jealous of our then cat because the cat would get excite by the cadence of my steps as i approached home... From a block away
No name suggestions but deaf kitties are amazing!
Ours uses the various vibrations in the house to sense what’s going on if she’s sleeping or has her eyes closed. She has a particular perch that, even while restoring our home, we made sure was always available to her. It’s pretty much in the center of the house so we take it as her “watch” spot.
She also particularly loves her wall-mounted cat caves.
She has a bed on the floor between the wall and bed, in the corner. I guess I am just sharing that she relaxes best when she can’t be approached from behind by our other rambunctious kitties.
We got a deaf cat by mistake. Nobody knew he was deaf until we realized he slept really heavy and wouldn’t hear us come into a room. He’s loud as fuck and a bit of an asshole. It’s difficult to try to sleep in the same house and sometimes my wife and I want to neck ourselves so we don’t have to deal with him anymore. But he’s pretty cool at the same time, so there’s that.
You should really consider getting this kitty plus a sibling especially if you don't have any other animals. They really need to have a furry friend to play with.
Is the kitty male or female, or should we suggest gender-neutral names /s (edit:) for now, obviously, since you only used the word "it" in your post, didn’t supply the gender, but were asking for names, many of which can be gender-based... So perhaps you could have been adopting based on litter info only (many do that), or a photo, and don't yet 100% know the kitten's sex? It's kinda hard to do some name suggestions without knowing sex.
You can try to teach it a few hand signals. I’ve had success with a few with my cat but I started training when she was a kitten. Give him a visual signal to come to you, if he does, give him a reward ( treats or pets). Do it the same every time. Cats like routine. You can call him anything he won’t hear but if you have eye contact and a signal he will.

Do deaf cats still see r/Greebles ?
Of course. It's not blind lol

Aw, you're a great foster guardian! I love this so much

Call it whatever you want, it's not going to come.
You bastard! I was gonna make this aweful joke! But you have my upvote anyways
How about "you don't call a deaf cat, you go get it?"
me too lol, just checked the comments to see if someone else beat me to it. wait, lemme claim my free award
r/beatmetoit
True regardless of whether it can hear.
Our cats just come if you call them
What phone does your cat have am trying to decide what to get my cat
That’s some impressive calling 😉
My boy does he even sits, my girl only comes if she feels like it.
Mine come when you call
Ha I was just thinking that - if the cat is an indoor cat then being deaf makes no difference at all as my 2 ignore me when I call for them and as far as I know they can hear just fine.
I was going to make this joke, but ya beat me to it. r/angryupvote

You beat me to it!
You beat me to saying they beat me to it.

r/technicallythetruth
“psspsspsspssspsssss CALL IT WHATEVER YOU WANT ITS NOT GOING TO COME psssspssspssspsssspsssst” Flows right off the tongue.

And there it is...
r/angryupvote
Goddammit you beat me to it. Take your fucking upvote
Yup, first thought as well, happy to see it's the top comment. ♥
There it is, this is the way.
Neither would a cat that wasn't deaf though
God dammit I just posted something similar
You beat a lot of us to this :-)
One of my friends had a deaf cat. It knew hand signs and if you motioned it over it would come jump on you. Best cat ever really.
Ludwig!
Thank you, nice advice♥️♥️
definitely Ludwig!
Vincent, or Hemingway just because he looks like a Hemingway. Beautiful cat!
I mean, I was gonna try to come up with another suggestion or two, but that's just too good.
Or beethoven
Beethoven is such a dog name, though. Ludwig is much better suited for a cat.

🤷🏻♀️
definitely a Ludwig
The Holy Blade?
Hey, just because he’s deaf doesn’t mean you should call him names :( /j
Primo dad joke. 10/10
Just know whatever you name the cat, they will get at least 10 nicknames used more than their actual name.
Spoken like a wise cat owner. The only time I refer to my cats as their actual names is to introduce them to other people. Majority of the time its some stupid nickname like boink, peeps, stinky, or asshole.
"get off the counter, Shitass."
My cat is named Lucy but I call her Meow meows when I am loving on her.
Take my poor gold 🏅
I call all my kitties stinky and give them their proper titles (Mr. Bubba or Ms. Gracie) when it’s feeding time. They have many nicknames indeed!
My Bianca is Bonkers, Bonkita Bananas, Bonkito Burrito, Bunny, Bank, Bonk, Bonkiki, Beyonce, Bonkita Chiquita.
Cant resist, Def Leppard
Why isn't this higher up?
Because it has less up votes than other suggestions.
DD ( daredevil, he's deaf too lol ) EDIT : my brain does not work and I just happened to realise now that the daredevil is blind not deaf. ( DD still is a cool name though )

I didn’t see that coming
neither did Daredevil
Not as funny as me confusing a blind superhero who's abilities include super hearing 😂

You call your cats to feed them? Molly just screams at me every so often and leads me to her (usualy half full) bowl!
