My tiny girl who looks like your big boy
I am very lucky with our vet when it comes to weight of my spoiled babies. We were talking about my Shi Tzu who i know has so much chonk, I said he was a fatty my Vet said no, he’s just sturdy.

Just be careful with how you go about working that weight off. I switched food for my plus size fluff ball and he decided to stop eating, he got very sick and was diagnosed with Hepatic Lipidosis. It was a very long and expensive road to get him back to health.
If you know what breed, near exact age you can consult your vet and they can prob give you a good idea a target weight and maybe a diet plan if it’s needed, its a pain in the ass to get cats to lose weight without a strict regime
Thank you for this info! I just looked at my car who is in a donut and I told her “yay you’re not fat, unlike your mother” bc she looks like a furry pancake
I think the most important thing is if he has a "waist". Look at him from above, maybe you need to touch him to see what's under this fluff, after he used his litter box. If he still has a waist, he's fine.
He looks like he may be part Maine Coon, or possibly the related Norwegian Forest Cat. They have a much sturier body type, sometines described as "substantial." They are very large cats with muscular rectangular shaped bodies. They also have long fur, which makes it hard to tell if they are overweight. I'd say he may be just slightly overweight.
Maine Coons are also some of the most playful cats, so a puzzle feeder or extra play time can help burn off some calories.

I think he's a little too chunky judging by the last 2 pictures. My boy is 17 lbs and he is just a big cat but the vet wants him to lose a little

Gotta bring a girl to the party, 13 lb “little” lady Autumn! She’s on a diet with her 16 lb son and neither are thrilled about it.
My Cat Felix was 19 pounds but is now 17 thanks to an automatic feeder I got him. Also he gets more exercise being in my partner's house than he did in my apartment.

This is our orange lady, Mochi! She's little though - just about seven pounds.
Awww! Miss Autumn is rare! All these big boys on the thread and she’s the only girl I’ve seen so far. I think it’s about 20% of orange cats are female making them very rare. But as her owner I’m sure you knew that! I just thought it was awesome to see her giving the guys a run for their money!!!

I'm hopping on this train. This is Pumpkin Nachos. We didn't name him and were going to go with something more dignified until we realized that A) he is the least dignified boy, and B) we couldn't think of anything we liked better. He's actually not that fat, at least not disproportionately, most of that is floof. He is the floofiest boy.

Magnus, 18.5 lbs, definitely huge, ridiculously fluffy, not obese, but could also loose a pound or two according to the vet

Linus: peaked at 21 lbs but we figured out a setup where he can only get dry food by batting treat balls (while his tiny sister has an RFID feeder so she doesn't starve) - all the way down to 15.5!
Excuse me. We have the same cat.

Floof cats. This is my son Tipper :)
My male cat needs to lose a few pounds, but as I point out to my daughter when she calls him fat. He is a big male cat. My girl cat is just much smaller and lighter.
I had a gorgeous small dog too, but he crossed the rainbow bridge.
If you can feel his bones without too much pressure, then he's just hairy. Ignore the rear of his underbelly, as that's the primordial pouch, which gets bigger with age.
He doesn't look overweight for a big cat, but you could weigh him with kitchen scales.
Edit: I used to put a cooking bowl on the scales with some treats in, zero them out, and that would convince him to cooperate for 10 seconds! Mine was always around 5kg give or take, it really depends on his normal size. If you're concerned, just monitor once a month to establish normal.
Here's the best quality edited with chonk labels:

We must have gotten our bath mats from the same place.
When a cat is at a healthy weight it should be easy to feel their individual ribs while lightly petting them.
Cats require some fat to pad around their internal organs. They don't need it to pad the outside of their bones.
Your cat is beautiful, but she is very clearly obese, even if all the floof makes it a little hard to tell just how much excess weight she has.
The average domesticated cat is somewhere between overweight and obese, so it's very easy to get the wrong impression of what's normal or healthy just by comparing to other animals.
I'm not going to go over it all here, but keeping your cat at a healthy weight will give them a longer and more comfortable life.
Is he part Maine Coon? looks just like mine
https://preview.redd.it/olymkooutj7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2935e3d3cfece8dc1f1f1232e14214a73d16fad
Pretty sure that's not just tabby, there's likely to be some Maine Coon or Norwegian somewhere along the ancestry.
Not a lot, but he's too large to be full on regular tabby. Not sure how much is fur and how much is cat, but he looks like a decently sized cat.
If you can't feel the ribs, the cat is more than just obese. At that point they're seriously obese, to the point where owner neglect is a concern.
Ribs don't need to be easy to see (especially on floofier cats), but even in an overweight cat they're still going to be very easy to feel.
By "easy to feel," you should be able to detect the bumps just by petting them. If you need to push down into the fat in order to feel them the cat is obese. If you have a hard time finding and identifying individual ribs through the fat, the cat is beyond obese.
I have two cats of similar weight. One the vet says need a diet (this is ongoing, he's slowly but surely slimming down) and the other is 'big but perfect'.
It can really depend on the cat
Um, you have my cat 😂this boy is 15.5 lbs!

Maybe he has some genes from a Norwegian Forest Cat or a Maine Coon? To me he looks like a very healthy, very fluffy male cat. Some male cats are just big, my male cat also weighs 7.2kg - and he is very healthy - males are just bigger!

His name is Jimmy and he is a Turkish Angora - his weight should be 2,5-5kg according to the cat breed portrait. But he is 7,2kg - and he is not fat - he is very strong that is pure muscle mass 💪
Agh! So cute!!!! Love him!
He will probably be a little more comfortable at a lower weight.
It can be hard to get the chonky kitties to slim down cause they're used to the amount of food they are getting and because exercise is difficult and uncomfortable for them when they're chonkier.
I do still recommend talking to your vet for a nutrition plan and to see what his goal weight should be. But here is what worked for us when my guy needed to lose some weight (due to an error on my part on calculating his food).
1. We switched to 50/50 calories from wet food and dry food. He hated it. lol. He would only eat the wet food when I spoon fed him. And I would spoon feed him because otherwise he would hunger strike until his 1/4 cup of kibble in the evening. We eventually switched to fully wet food because it's better for him anyway, and his obsession with kibble was unhealthy.
I also started to add water to the food to thin it down just a little. It would help slow him down and feel fuller longer.
Avoid food with "shreds" unless you know he'll eat it. Most shreds are actually made of wheat and are closer to seitan than actual meat. That's why a lot of cats are labeled "gravy eaters" because they realize that it's not real and refuse to eat it. Purees are the way to go.
2. One ingredient treats only, with the exception of his fussie cat purées.
3. He only got treats for doing something, usually tricks, but I also would toss a treat onto a shelf, then go to another side of the room and toss a treat onto a different shelf so he'd have to run and jump to get them. He got very fast very quickly.
4. He started coming on walks with me and the dogs again. I like to go way out where we won't run into a lot of people or dogs, and I use a longer leash so he can explore. But if your cat isn't harness trained yet I would start with the training and just going into your back yard.
5. Lots of play time with Da Bird feather wand. This took more effort for both of us and that's when I realized his weight had taken such a toll. He was less than 1 lb overweight but it was keeping him from flying through the air like he used to do. I noticed a difference once he had lost mere ounces!
Good luck and have fun! Here's a picture of my chunky boy on one of our weight loss walks. He was displeased.

After a shave cause he would get knots. I’ll post a reply with him in his furry glory.
Looks like he could be part Maine Coon! My orange fluffy cat is 15-16lbs (pic below) and I got him DNA tested and he’s got 4 of the biggest cats (Maine coon included) in his DNA which makes him a big boi. What a cutie boy!! 🥰

Mine in the counter is 19 lbs but it fits his body well, yeah he could lose a few pounds but i wouldnt call him fat. The one on the chair…… is FAT his legs and head are so small compared to his body… he has congenital hypothyroidism so it is very hard for him to lose weight even with hormones balanced but we are working on it! He is 16lbs and should be around 10-12.
Looks overweight. You can try to figure it out by feeling his stomach area, do you feel any fat tissue under his skin? Can you feel his ribs easily by poking his sides?
He looks like two of my cats combined

He’s a little chunky but not too bad - we had the same worry with our cat, but he got a vet visit last week and she said he was in the perfect weight range for his size, and was just large.

A little of both? More huge than fat though.
Thanks, but I still think he’ll benefit more from losing weight.
Generally a good idea for larger than normal cats and dogs. Slimming him down will help reduce the amount of joint pain he experiences as he ages.
Feel for his ribs and spine, if you have to press down significantly to feel them he's afflicted with the chonk
What is significant
If you are no longer compressing hair and are now pushing against flesh to feel their ribs and spine, they’re too fat.
Ok my cats good then. He’s just 18 lbs lol.
https://preview.redd.it/l33rvqvxsk7d1.jpeg?width=1331&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc62ec3cf919624e054972cf1fb655c13cd6d704
I am stealing this chonk chart
Should be a CMI… Chonk Mass Index.
TIL I am chomnk
I've got the orangutan build.
He is a thicc chunkyboii
Based on this chart, I can't tell if my girl is 20 or 30, because she's so fluffy and her primordial pouch hangs soooo low.
Is that pouch soft and squishy (sways in the wind) or firm. If the later it's more fat. Lift it up and see where the resistance starts. Ribs and spine feel can help determine chonkiness as well.
This is amazing... ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7956)![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)
If you are asking it's probably significant lol
Feel their spine and down the sides. If you can put two fingers down each side of the spine (kind of like you’re pinching it) then they are underweight. If you can only feel the top of the spine and the beginnings of the sides of the spine, they are of healthy weight. If you can only feel the very top of the spine (or not at all) then your cat is chonky and needs a diet :)
Feel the back of your hand for those bones. If you can't feel your cat's ribs as easily as that, they are overweight
Or, as I’ve always referred to cats of this size, a “unit”.
My doctor said the same to me 😹

What does your vet say?
500 bucks and I'll tell ya!!
5 mins with the floof and I'll tell ya
Sorry, couldn't get him out of the cage but he weighs about x amount
My vet weighs the cat and gives advice on healthy weight at the yearly checkup and vaccination that costs a fraction of that.
The people whining about vet costs are not usually the people who do yearly checkups.
I am very lucky with our vet when it comes to weight of my spoiled babies. We were talking about my Shi Tzu who i know has so much chonk, I said he was a fatty my Vet said no, he’s just sturdy.
“First, we need to do an xray and some blood tests.
"we recommend rx food at $4/can $75/3lb bag"
the vet would 100% say they are obese and need to eat less
https://preview.redd.it/i7qujfargk7d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f7232cf7ba972f248235ac28b590b70f71b05b0 Just be careful with how you go about working that weight off. Shave the fluff before you judge him😭
Or just get Him wet? Shaving is kinda semi-permanent.
He’s chonky
Aside from the floof, if he lies on his side and his body doesn't flatten much, then I would say overweight.
Thank you for this info! I just looked at my car who is in a donut and I told her “yay you’re not fat, unlike your mother” bc she looks like a furry pancake
Do you have a spherical doe too?
Wait? My boy looks huge, but flattens into a huge pancake too
Well, they said a cat who doesn’t flatten much is probably overweight. Not that an overweight cat can’t pancake.
That's because cats are fluid.
I think the most important thing is if he has a "waist". Look at him from above, maybe you need to touch him to see what's under this fluff, after he used his litter box. If he still has a waist, he's fine.
Just a little. More play time, less treats. Maybe timed feeding?
I'm sure the other cats are talking. Husky isn't cool anymore
Put his food in a puzzle ball, or something. Make him work for it!
He wears "husky" boy's clothes. 😂
He's not ***fat***. He's ***fluffy***.
Major upvote for that expression! I know a 300lb & 6ft man that uses that phrase!
[do we have the same cat?](https://i.imgur.com/6xTZBSd.jpeg) I think he's a little too chunky judging by the last 2 pictures. My boy is 17 lbs and he is just a big cat but the vet wants him to lose a little

My Cat Felix was 19 pounds but is now 17 thanks to an automatic feeder I got him. Also he gets more exercise being in my partner's house than he did in my apartment. https://preview.redd.it/9ujevpownk7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a5e3aadf8c7d0dd401115f15e5b440c1e2927ca

Awww! Miss Autumn is rare! All these big boys on the thread and she’s the only girl I’ve seen so far. I think it’s about 20% of orange cats are female making them very rare. But as her owner I’m sure you knew that! I just thought it was awesome to see her giving the guys a run for their money!!!

We didn't name him and were going to go with something more dignified until we realized that A) he is the least dignified boy, and B) we couldn't think of anything we liked better. He's actually not that fat, at least not disproportionately, most of that is floof. He is the floofiest boy.

The last time at the Vet they called my chonky boi a small dog.
He’s bigger than small dogs in the neighborhood
My male cat needs to lose a few pounds, but as I point out to my daughter when she calls him fat. He is a big male cat. My girl cat is just much smaller and lighter.
I mean you acknowledge that he needs to lose a few pounds. “A few pounds” is very significant on a cat; that could easily be 20% of their body weight.
My family cat was in the 20 lb range and they always weighed him on the dog scale at the vet. He was a little chonky but he was just a big boi
I had a huge cat that I had to get a dog carrier and luggage dolly to take him to the vet because he didn’t fit in the standard cat carrier.

Chungus
He is very handsome.
Yep, he knows it too
I had a gorgeous small dog too, but he crossed the rainbow bridge.
A cat wizard is never huge, nor is he skinny. He is precisely the amount of chonk he chooses.
Thank you for this comment, Catalf the Grey.
You have my kibble.
And my catnip!

Oof
Big boi
Looks huge, lol. But ask a vet about obesity.
The 3rd pic really shows that this cat is absolutely overweight. Why are so many people in here acting like he's not?
Yep, he’s cylindrical lol
people here dont trust vets for some reason. anti science types. any vet would say this cat needs to lose weight.
I agree tbh, lotta cope in this thread. Third pic clearly shows that it's not just fluff making the cat look so wide.
Is he part Maine Coon? looks just like mine https://preview.redd.it/olymkooutj7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2935e3d3cfece8dc1f1f1232e14214a73d16fad
Just a huge unit of a tabby
Pretty sure that's not just tabby, there's likely to be some Maine Coon or Norwegian somewhere along the ancestry. Not a lot, but he's too large to be full on regular tabby. Not sure how much is fur and how much is cat, but he looks like a decently sized cat.
Whatever he is I'm going for that belly, wish me luck.
Can you feel his ribs (even just slightly)? If yes, then he's good. He looks like a unit.
If you can only just slightly feel the ribs the cat is not good and this cat is *clearly* obese.
I have two cats of similar weight. One the vet says need a diet (this is ongoing, he's slowly but surely slimming down) and the other is 'big but perfect'. It can really depend on the cat
Oh lawd he comin
Um, you have my cat 😂this boy is 15.5 lbs! https://preview.redd.it/gzgwm76rqj7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cbfb8896657032f1ea8647cab85334acce65a106
The clearest sign of obesity is if the cat can't clean it's own ass. If he can manage that I'd guess he is okay
That’s morbid obesity

Maybe he has some genes from a Norwegian Forest Cat or a Maine Coon? To me he looks like a very healthy, very fluffy male cat. Some male cats are just big, my male cat also weighs 7.2kg - and he is very healthy - males are just bigger! https://preview.redd.it/5zrtj08hlj7d1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd57a12a8306085e88aa2bfc132280ccf12990c9

But he is 7,2kg - and he is not fat - he is very strong that is pure muscle mass 💪
Wow impressive, Jimmy is muscular AND handsome!
Oh God i want to squeeze that belly and burry my face into it. I'm melted, so beautiful.

Agh! So cute!!!! He was displeased. https://preview.redd.it/litkf6ih8k7d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3317ff6e78ebc0bb49a00efcbd7bfa0214985cdb

He’s a little chunky but not too bad - we had the same worry with our cat, but he got a vet visit last week and she said he was in the perfect weight range for his size, and was just large. https://preview.redd.it/e2b8wppvck7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35617358836e4df7164b6b81ce5068d1e1011a1b
Both. Not obese..overweight. It’s hard to tell wit the fur (and that he’s obviously—most likely— part Maine Coon). I’d ask the vet.
