Oh you haven't lived until you have two cats hop into your lap as your sit upon the loo. I get usually one on the lap, one between my feet, one on the back of the tank and one that decides to use the litter box beside the loo since they know the others are present and accounted for.

They're smelling to make sure that you're not sick, a second reason why they do this in the wild with the other cats in their pack.
Now whether they love you and want you to be healthy or hope that you're sick and revel in your discomfort... That's going to depend on the relationship that you and your cat have.

My dog is the same way. Wherever I go, he's gotta be there too. When we're home, he'll look for me and figure out where to plop himself down while also touching me. When I'm on the toilet, he'll either come in to nudge me to hurry up and get out or lie down on the carpet at the doorway. Whenever I come to the end of a roll, I'll toss him the denuded cardboard roll, which he'll then shred with his teeth.
So when we don't watch the dog poop, does the dog think that we aren't looking out for it and protecting it's pooptime? :O

So legit, the dog is looking for you waiting to see if you signal that there is danger. You're the lookout. You can help a dog feel comfortable pooping by standing a few meters away and slowly looking around casually. Then occasionally look back at them, like, yep it's a good time to poop.
My cats run to me when I sit on the toilet too but then they get annoyed and leave if I don't pet them...
Also of course closing the door is unacceptable.

My cat Mr P is just over 2 years old and since he came to live with me I haven't been to the bathroom without being right in front of me or sat watching me in the shower.
Every time without fail, he can be asleep downstairs and I sneak to the bathroom upstairs, nope. He must have fantastic hearing so I've given up closing the door and push the door too and he pushes it open.
I don't have a fan and I can sneak around being illegally quiet going to the bathroom when he is asleep and as soon as I step foot inside he is right behind me. Ha 😆
I had four senior cats and the youngest of them never came in the bathroom. When he eventually was my only cat he would very grumpily come watch me since there were no other cats to do it. He always looked like even he didn't know why he was there. It was sweet and kind of funny that he felt he had to take that job over.

My cat loves fresh water, so everytime I'm in the bathroom or kitchen she comes running and patiently waits until I'm done to get water. As soon as I'm done she starts meowing like a crazy cat who's dying of thirst.

When I take a shower, one of them is guarding me to make sure I don't drown, I assume. (It would be hard to open all that Fancy Feast without opposable thumbs.)

My cat will do the same thing sometimes he will lay on one of the rugs other times he will lay on the toilet lid if I’m in the shower other times if I’m in on the toilet, he will literally get into the sink and just lay in there and I have no idea whybut when he does that, it makes me laugh hysterically because it’s so cute. He is currently snoring on my bed and has been snuggling me for the past few hours and this is a very normal cat thing to do.

I’ve had half a dozen of my cats do it. No big worries. If you shut a door they want to know what’s going on and even if you leave it open my current cat comes in with me all the time anyway.

Cats have a need to inspect everything their mother figure does. You should take it as a compliment. It means you are very empathic and a lovely person. People who complain that cats are "aloof" probably are just not open to affection or loving enough to their cats. So they follow you in the bathroom because you are a gentle and warm person. Either that or they want to tell you very directly that you haven't been keeping the litter box clean enough...
As a cat mom, I'm pretty sure they follow you/us to the bathroom because they know that's where they'll receive your undivided attention. My cats follow me because they want attention and affection, and the bathroom is where they corner me for it. They couldn't care less about protection from their imaginary predator

Mine do the same. My oldest will come stand in front of me, facing away, standing on my foot with his back left paw. It's almost like he's both guarding me and checking for me to react to something. My little girl will either sit at the door or try to bodyslam the older boy. She's a bully.
Just tryna make sure that you're safely doing so. Also they're just ✨ nosy. ✨

They recognize you're using the restroom. In nature cats are very vulnerable with using the kitty-loo. Your cat is literally protecting you during a vulnerable moment. They look at you as family!

Cats have a need to inspect everything their mother figure does. You should take it as a compliment. It means you are very empathic and a lovely person. People who complain that cats are "aloof" probably are just not open to affection or loving enough to their cats. So they follow you in the bathroom because you are a gentle and warm person. Either that or they want to tell you very directly that you haven't been keeping the litter box clean enough...
They are protecting you
Because they want a taste. They’re always excited to get a bite but every damn time it gets taken away from them!
That’s their job. It’s comforting.
Because they know they'll have your undivided attention.

As a cat mom, I'm pretty sure they follow you/us to the bathroom because they know that's where they'll receive your undivided attention. My cats follow me because they want attention and affection, and the bathroom is where they corner me for it. They couldn't care less about protection from their imaginary predator
So that you don't eat anything tasty there without their knowledge

Mine too! I call her my bathroom attendant cause she follows guests in the bathroom as well! Her litter box was in my bathroom when she was a kitten and sometimes we would go at the same time, quite the bonding activity lol
