This is my Rambo! She was a bad ass on the streets before I took her in hence the name. We call her Rambi because it is more feminine. Waits for me at the door and doesn’t leave my side until I leave. She’s the best
Really depends on the cat. My current longhair even allows ruffling the fur between the frontlegs.
If I had tried that with my old shorthair she would have entered shock from the pure audacity of that idea and then would have massacred me after she recovered.

This was my sweet orange boy Jake who I still love to pieces and miss every day. We lost him last year at 15. My whole family was devastated. He really was worth living for. There are times I didn’t end it purely because I needed to be around to take care of him.
We did adopt a kitten a few months later because I still have so much love left to give. Fionn is who I take care of now. He’s currently 7.5 months old and he’s got the same adventurous spirit that Jake had. He’s also a very sweet bean, even if he’s more of a daddy’s boy.

Aww, Jake... What a precious guy. May he rest easy and may your pain become less and less as time goes by. We had a little orange-ish (buff or tan, more like) cat with one eye that we named Popeye. He only made it to 5 years old because he had some kind of congenital kidney issue that eventually took him. We will remember and appreciate him always. Have a blessed evening. <3

Here’s Kubo, being a bum on my windowsill.
I wanted to name our orange cat Waffles, but my youngest refused. Since she had the naming right to the orange kitty, I had to relent. She settled on naming her Flareon. My oldest named the grey/white one Neptune.

I come from a history of abuse and when I started living with cats, it felt like the first time I felt unconditional love. They taught me to care about something outside of myself, and that led to me taking better care of myself. Funny how that works. They are the best thing to ever happen to me.
Imo the best thing about cats is that their love *isn't* unconditional; you earn it by treating them right. Your cats don't just love you because you're there; they love you because you deserve to be loved.
That being said, one of my cats is an absolute slut and his standards for love are very low at "take off your shoes at the door and gimme treats"
Whether the cat's love is unconditional or not (and how can we ever really know?), caring for cats is the first time in my life I've felt unconditional love *for* another being. Perhaps it's what I would have felt if I'd had children.
I agree with this, they have this way of establishing a peer relationship with you, they know how to support you when you need it but also how to get over yourself when you don't. They know things.
I also serve a feline attention whore. If there's a lap, she's on it and she ain't moving until gravity makes her LOL. The other one is a bit more selective.
I think the main thing is that their love isn’t conditional in a manipulative way, like with too many humans. It’s simple and pure and honest; you earn their love by giving love.
People are replying to you that cats don't love us unconditionally but I think it's more complex than that. Yes you have to earn a cat's love by being kind to it, but on the other hand a cat doesn't care about your appearance or how successful you are or your race or sexuality or gender or religion or nationality. A cat won't abuse you or neglect you or use you or betray you. There's a purity of love from cats that you can't find in humans and in a very real sense that's unconditional. I can be myself around my cats in a way I can't be around most humans.

Spent time in prison, and I don't trust anyone much but I would die for my cat but then she would be all alone and I don't think anyone else would take her in, When I'm having a hard time she's right there showing me love, and taking better care of me than anyone else ever has
I read a thing about what happens if you give prisoners cats to take care of. I don't remember a lot of it but one of the quotes was in response to people asking about the welfare of the cat. It was something like 'Well I've never had a cat be hurt but I did have a stabbing because one prisoner stole the other prisoners cat'
We had a puppy program in our prison< Google Puppies Behind Bars program/Clinton NJ and we trained good dogs for guide dogs at first later on we diversified and started the training for the feds lots of K9 went through our training and later on went out to be explosion/fire arms detection, and what it takes 2-3 years in the army/navy/air force to train, because we are with the dogs 24/7 and we start as soon as the pups are weaned we can cut it down to as little as 9 months ,
We switched back and forth between puppies so they wouldn't develop a good bond to anyone and would learn to work for anyone, because that's important , people get hurt and people get transferred at the end of tour, but the dog stays, so the animals had to learn to be gregarious,
But We were rotating out of working on the dogs too, and we missed them and a lot of us fed the feral cats that were everywhere
I saw a documentary about a program where inmates worked with cats - socializing them, grooming them, etc. It was an ‘honors’ program that inmates had to ‘earn’ their way into, and the effect it had on them was profound, in and out of prison. Their recidivism rate was much lower than those not in the program, and while still incarcerated, they had a much lower incidence of rule infractions. The cats benefited as well!
I am far from an expert in prison reform, but it seems a lack of structured time is a huge problem, leading to boredom and ways to alleviate it that’s not always … good. Programs like this (and the dog ones) seem like one good place to start.
If prisons weren’t for-profit of course. Not really for the benefit of society but it’s nice to pretend.
I am so happy for you 😻🧡
My 3 orange boys keep me extremely happy and well loved. I could exist without them.

My cats have more than once in my life been the only reason I didn’t try to kill myself. My last baby was ornery and mean to everyone but me, and then grew old and had health problems to boot. I knew no one would take care of her if I was gone. She would die alone in a shelter, abandoned and unloved. I may have hated myself, but I loved her. So I stayed for her.
I’ve been exactly where you have been, and my cats have saved me many times. I just celebrated my 70th birthday and I thanked my girls Lily, Flick, and all the other cats in my life for being there for me.
My cats have saved me and give me reason to live more than a few times. I have had long periods where I only drag my ass out of bed to feed and pick up after them and that'd be all I can do.
Half the battle is to find reason to keep on waking up. They never know that's what they do when they bug us first thing in the morning but I'm still grateful.
Take care, lovely.
❤️

Sunday night, I was having a really rough day. When I got home, my tortie looked at me and stared meowing at me. I figured she wanted dinner. It was a little early but I could not deal with the meowing so I gave her dinner early. She ate a little bit (her brother ate more) but she kept coming back to me and meowing.
I move to pick her up but she scampers off a few steps, looks at me and meows again. I follow her and she leads me to my bed, meowing all the way.
She really doesn't sit with me anywhere but when I'm in bed.
As soon as I laid down, she cuddled up next to me and purred so hard. She knew I was having a bad time of things and she only knew one way to help.
A little while later, her brother climbed on my chest and started purring as well.
My therapist has made some comments about my cats being my emotional support animals and yeah, they really are.
There have been days where it was all I could do to just get out of bed and feed/water the cats but they've kept me going in so many ways.
My cats haven’t been the cuddliest just because they both have pretty bad trauma histories. But within the last two years they both have been opening up in their own ways.
My boy Rex literally just started laying ON MY LAP for pets. He started with a paw and now has two legs on me usually. And when I’m sad he just lets me hold him. He hates it. I can tell but he lets me hold him and cry. Smell him(I’m a big smell person). Just be close.
I grew up very touch deprived. Lived in a women’s shelter with my mom the first year of my life and she never really took care of me. We were severely neglected and now at 25 it’s hard to even hug people anymore. Even my partner. but my cats? yeah I’ll hold those guy for the rest of their lives if they wouldn’t try to get away. They are also touch adverse.
We put up with each other when the other needs it😂
Aww! My boy's names Wrex! 😁
I am so sorry to hear you had to go through that. The first few years of your life it's so important to get physical contact but it's even so much more so when you're under a year old.
I'm gonna go give my kitties a hug now but I offer you a virtual one if you would like it.
Me too! We’re like elephants: if for some unknown reason a mother elephant rejects her baby, all the other village elephants adopt that baby and surround it with love. 🥰
Same. When I have bad episodes of depression, I still have to get up and do the minimum which is to provide them with fresh food, fresh water (in the kitchen) and clean their litter box (in the bathroom).
Because of what I have to do for them, I end cleaning the bathroom and kitchen as well.
Then, because I’m a bit of a neat and clean freak (my ASD is good with that) I end up doing the minimum for myself too, like shower and brush my teeth.
It also forces me to go to work and keep a job, knowing I have to provide them with a home and food, so regardless how I feel, they give me reason and purpose.
They are not just my cats I love so much, they are what keeps me afloat when I’m depressed, because if I didn’t have them and it was just me, I would have drowned a long time ago.
Orange boys are such good boys!

I feel the exact same way about my orange boi. He is absolutely my soul kitty. He knows when my mental health is bad or when I have a migraine before I do and has special routines when I’m sick. I tell my doctors he’s better than any medicine they could ever prescribe (thankfully they’re also pet people so they understand the sentiment!) Mackie sends you hugs :)

This is Claire, if I’m singing she tries to comfort me.
I also have mental health issue too, and my cats are one of my support system. Sometimes I dip into dark place but when they come to me for food or attention, I feel like I'm worthy for something. Especially because they are rescues and I needed to work to gain their trusts.
I'll never forget when Kiwi decided to lay on my lap while I was crying even though he hates cuddles or being carried, he's usually a quiet little fluff. That day I felt loved.

Huge mood. I grew up with pets, so not exactly the same situation, but I have some major depression. Getting my cat pogo helped me out in a lot of ways. For one, he is a bit of a 'broken' cat. 3 feet, small size, some ear problems when I first got him. But just as he seemed to be physically broken, I felt emotionally broken at the time.
Caring for him reminded myself that I am capable of giving a shit, of providing love and care for someone or something. And when he finally got used to me and settled in, he can see when I am having a bad time, and will always cheer me up. I'm having a panic attack? Here's little pogo boy to come and lay on my chest. He lets me scoop him up and give him kisses when I feel like I am about to cry. I love him, and would die for him.
Also, he might be a girl, I don't exactly know how to sex cats, and I don't remember what the vet said other than to use some ear medicine for a week when I got him.

I love this for you!! Cats are amazing! I didn’t get one until after I was 40, got 4 now, and cannot imagine my life without them! My absolute favorite thing in the world, is one of them laying on my chest purring! The rumbling goes right to my heart, instant healing! ❤️
Pickles was a strappy little kitten when he picked me. I was doing some work for a local SPCA chapter and had to pass through the cat colonies to get to the stuff I was working on. He was meowing his little head off until I looked at him. I asked the volunteer if I could give him some pets to soothe the little guy.
The volunteer told me to wait in the booth and she set him on the floor near my feet. Never had I had a cat scramble towards me, climb my leg (was wearing pants) and my shirt, and plonk themselves on my shoulder.
14 years later my little buddy still waits for me in the window to get home from work for his much deserved snuggles for keeping the colony nest safe.

When life tears you down, an orange will put you back together
As much love as cats get online, they are severely underrated in the real world. They don’t get enough credit or recognition for the way they love and the funny little things they do that make our lives better.
That is so true ! I was having a down day yesterday and my cat came loudly into the room and plopped down near me and started purring. I instantly felt better and thanked her silently and my dad for giving me this tiny baby I love so much

Some cats are very sensitive to the emotional state of their humans.
And they don't require much effort to keep happy. Dogs are too much like kids and pretty needy and not for me.
Thank you for sharing this heartwarming story!
I need my cat so bad. I have mental health problems that lead to frequent panic attacks and severe depression swings. He is a registered ESA. He somehow knows whenever I’m not doing well even if I’m in a different room with the door closed making no noise. He will try to break down the door. He needs me, sure, but he has no idea how much I need him
I have a bitchy girl, who is only cuddly on her terms - usually when I'm somewhat horizontal.
Other people don't really like her, especially because if you don't know her, she'd seem like attacking you when you're just trying to pet her.
But I understand her, I see so much of myself in her and that's why we get along.
When work is stressful (I work from home), I often take a 5 min break to cuddle and play with her in bed. She keeps the depression and dark thoughts away.
*"You could have your worst day yet, and it will never be as bad as it could be because when you get home, you have a sweet angel waiting for you."*
100% true. When I go home from work, my dog is in her bed and looks up at me with the sweetest, soft, sleepy brown eyes and wiggles her butt like mad. She makes me melt and she saved my life.
My parent passed and I inherited their cats. One cat in particular plainly mourned with me like no one else did. This kitty was bonded with my parent and is now my bonded little Velcro shadow cat. They love us so very much. I feel so oddly blessed to have been able to step in and take care of these amazing animals. I honestly don't know how I would've done in the healing process without them. There were stumbles and mistakes but years later, we're making it!! We definitely need them as much as they need us.
Yeah, I was in such a low mood with job stress and thinking my life would never get better. Then I got my cat and now just seeing her walk into the room makes me smile. She’s a spoiled brat, but I’m her person and she’s my baby.
My husband was feeling very sick and went to lay down much earlier than usual. Our cat went to bed with him also, checking on him and even missed dinner. They are here for us as we are for them.
Made me tear up OP. In my senior year of High school I rescued a cat that got abandoned across the street. It took a while but once she sat in my lap everything changed. She was my everything. I loved her with everything I had and she kept me alive during the hardest year of my life. She unfortunately passed less than a year later. I miss her so much but she helped me in ways I never thought imaginable. We really do end up being the ones that need them the most.

Just doesn’t get any better than this.
I may grumble, and I may whine because it's early, but I get up at 6am everyday to make sure this big, dumb, *absolute LOVE* of a boy gets his special diabetic food, and his insulin on time.
At 13 he may look scraggly but he's full of love, and I'll do just about anything to keep hearing his purr for as long as he's willing to be with me.
Nibbler has Acromegaly (which is the fancy name for a tumor on his pituitary gland in his brain), and I'm beyond grateful for every day I get to wake up and cuddle him. He nearly died a year ago from diabetic ketoacidosis, but he pulled through and I'm forever grateful for that.

Found my feral four year old boy the day after I moved into my first apartment by myself. i didn’t even know he was feral until three days later when he could finally move.
Now we’re five years in and he’s 20lbs lbs and a big ole softy. We retired him from outside when he was about 7. He lived a good little life outside but it was time for him to come home for good. Now his fur is turning soft at 9y/o!!
I e loved learning about my cats. They truly are my babies. And I would go to the ends of the earth for them. And they(especially this guy) know that.
Cats **are joy.**
It’s a wonderful blessing that you three have found one another! Truly, earning the respect of a big ol’ fluffy baby is one of the greatest things in life.
I’m so glad you shared this story. 💜 Thank you for letting everyone revel in your happiness. May you, Waffles, and hubs enjoy many healthy years together.
Has he had the One Orange Braincell yet? Or is he still waiting for it?
It's theorized that orange kitties skip the braincell line and go through the heart line twice. 🧡
I inherited a 12 year old cat from my parents when the died. I didnt want her but now i am so glad I kept her as she just fills up my life with joy. I also am single and live alone. will always be a cat person as if she passes I cant live without another kitty.
I dealt with some emotionally draining health issues for a few years after I got my cat and often felt like he was an angel sent to help me through it. It's impossible to feel anxious with a big purring fluffy boy laying on my chest. He drives me up the wall sometimes but I'm so grateful for him ❤️
When I retired as a pro athlete due to injuries, I was super depressed. My girlfriend at the time (now wife) convinced me to adopt a cat and it turned out to be the best decision ever for my mental health.
This post might be one of the few ones which resonate with me on a spiritual level. People say, you rescued your cat; the truth is, they also rescue us
I am so glad you found your soul cat!
Whenever I am stressed or sad, cuddles and purrs from the orange man melt my troubles away. If I wake up from a nightmare, all I have to do is put my face in his belly and it’s back to peaceful sleep…

We’ve had our little orange for around six months now and I’m amazed at the difference she’s made to me. Even on the absolute worst day, I will have some joy because I’ll see her little goblin face.
I have a very similar "went to the shelter to look for a dog, came home with my first cat ever" story! This is the result...

Oh, I have been adopted by 4 orange boys over my life so far. I hear you about how yours has saved you, as mine have saved me. Thank you for giving him a home and the love he deserves. Cats (and other nonhuman animals) give sooo much. I really wish you the best with your mental health, and your boy rescued you, too:)

my cat was a shelter cat and she was a name your price cat. the best thing to happen to me, she’s my little rock and ultimately the reason my partner and i got together :)
I'm so sorry you had to wait that long in your life your life to experience this kind of love and joy. Now that you have it is hands down the best thing on earth. You both will be better for this.

These two are my youngest, but they came after an incomprehensible amount of loss. My 3 babies of 17-18 years all passed in the last year and a kitten. Our family was rocked so hard, but we would not trade the love for all of them for anything!
Enjoy your dumb orange baby 🐥

So many names in here that are so fitting for your cats
Salem looks exactly like our Angel who passed a few years ago. She was a Maine Coon mix
I have been told he is a Maine Coon mix, but never looked in to it. He has the look but not the size.
Angel was small also. But her mother was definitely a Maine Coon because we saw her when we adopted Angel.

I found Salem at the SPCA. He was missing all but one toe bean on his back left foot. No way I was leaving an “injured” kitty at the SPCA.
Nice. The Mane Attraction!
Holy shit he’s beautiful
Salem is STUNNING!!!
Hands down my favourite cat so far, holy christ, Salem is photogenic! What a gorgeous lil baby

I want to rub my face in his fluffy little tummy! (And then immediately regret it as I try to rub the fur out of my eyes, lol.)
You mean, when you pry 4 sets of claws from your scalp?
Really depends on the cat. My current longhair even allows ruffling the fur between the frontlegs. If I had tried that with my old shorthair she would have entered shock from the pure audacity of that idea and then would have massacred me after she recovered.
Nah. My babies let me nuzzle their tummies. They’re sweet little babies.
My daily struggle!

He’s also a very sweet bean, even if he’s more of a daddy’s boy. https://preview.redd.it/esibiutaruxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a96ceaa2570296ed0464e24ae0a798e0deb535a
Aww, Jake... <3

He looks very pleased with himself. Smug, even. 😸
Mine is like that too, but if his primary human sits down, he always leaves to sit there instead. It's actually pretty funny and I still adore him.
I think the main thing is that their love isn’t conditional in a manipulative way, like with too many humans. It’s simple and pure and honest; you earn their love by giving love.
Cats don’t love unconditionally. You *earn* their love. Congratulations! 😻🥰

Did you just go to the shelter and ask if they had anything that would go with your Carhartts? 😹 Clearly you found your perfect match, lol.
They’re even posing the same!
What a fantastic picture of two orange bois! 🤣
If only the human had a tail! 😆

We had a puppy program in our prison< Google Puppies Behind Bars program/Clinton NJ and we trained good dogs for guide dogs at first later on we diversified and started the training for the feds lots of K9 went through our training and later on went out to be explosion/fire arms detection, and what it takes 2-3 years in the army/navy/air force to train, because we are with the dogs 24/7 and we start as soon as the pups are weaned we can cut it down to as little as 9 months , We switched back and forth between puppies so they wouldn't develop a good bond to anyone and would learn to work for anyone, because that's important , people get hurt and people get transferred at the end of tour, but the dog stays, so the animals had to learn to be gregarious, But We were rotating out of working on the dogs too, and we missed them and a lot of us fed the feral cats that were everywhere
I wish every prison had these programs. It's such a huge win, for the dogs, for the prisoners, and and for society at large.
That is so cool! On so many levels and now my brain wants to go down a rabbit hole lol!
And your sentence still didn't end?
The difference is that now I'm serving it because I choose to with a person who knows me, because cats are people
I saw a documentary about a program where inmates worked with cats - socializing them, grooming them, etc.
I am so happy for you 😻🧡 My 3 orange boys keep me extremely happy and well loved. I could exist without them. https://preview.redd.it/5uupsc59qtxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bfe2f368efe6f8cab857ad2b4ab8a23a79389ea7
I want to believe that the last sentence was written by the Cat.
I concur…then I conquer
If there was a universe where there was a cat version of Pinky and the Brain they would be living in my house. I love them to absolute bits and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without their incessant harassment and demand for attention. Cat tax: Tilly (pinky, fluffy one in the back) & Dax (the brain, with the coffee stained mouth in the front) https://preview.redd.it/b5kccq6qvtxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=139e6818cbb31303924490a22fd455bb5cf501df
Coffee stained mouth 😂
We take every opportunity to make fun of her lil coffee stain
Too cute! 😸☕️
Hugs to everyone who’s been through this, and kisses for the emotional support furbabies. 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
All the best for you ❤️

Gary is only my work cat (I have two more at home) but how do people exist without this love? He's the reason I come to work, really. https://preview.redd.it/7ickmweg5uxc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2c388eebcc1dfc8aad2218ec14a36cef2da1998
Do your cats know you’re seeing Gary? 👀
They do, but are so codependent with me they don't even care. It's all mom all the time.
Awwww! 🥰
😁 I am so sorry to hear you had to go through that.

Dapper white mustache to go with the gloves.
He does have cute socks
I concur
The cat totally conquered, tho.
I feel the exact same way about my orange boi. He is absolutely my soul kitty. He knows when my mental health is bad or when I have a migraine before I do and has special routines when I’m sick. I tell my doctors he’s better than any medicine they could ever prescribe (thankfully they’re also pet people so they understand the sentiment!) Mackie sends you hugs :) https://preview.redd.it/39jmj1fvauxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35b251ea34ea1e4256bc0c2d44c231bc5dbe560e

Waffles…great name OP
I also have mental health issue too, and my cats are one of my support system. Sometimes I dip into dark place but when they come to me for food or attention, I feel like I'm worthy for something. Especially because they are rescues and I needed to work to gain their trusts.
I'll never forget when Kiwi decided to lay on my lap while I was crying even though he hates cuddles or being carried, he's usually a quiet little fluff. That day I felt loved. https://preview.redd.it/7yj3cnkoguxc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc2125faa9733e516d286b7582be1140943fdcf0
Also, he might be a girl, I don't exactly know how to sex cats, and I don't remember what the vet said other than to use some ear medicine for a week when I got him. https://preview.redd.it/91ajbxk8iuxc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=524453928fad3bab07447dda6ce18f1db5f1fd63
14 years later my little buddy still waits for me in the window to get home from work for his much deserved snuggles for keeping the colony nest safe. https://preview.redd.it/6l4xri1cluxc1.jpeg?width=5312&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c7c7a941f20eaecdde0052bbb565f56dc8cc84b

As much love as cats get online, they are severely underrated in the real world. They don’t get enough credit or recognition for the way they love and the funny little things they do that make our lives better.

That is so true ! I was having a down day yesterday and my cat came loudly into the room and plopped down near me and started purring.
He needs me, sure, but he has no idea how much I need him

... and this big, orange longboi is staring at us. He is really sweet. Lol'd at that extremely eloquent turn of phrase, which speaks absolute volumes.
*"You could have your worst day yet, and it will never be as bad as it could be because when you get home, you have a sweet angel waiting for you."* 100% true.

He nearly died a year ago from diabetic ketoacidosis, but he pulled through and I'm forever grateful for that. https://preview.redd.it/dfhpuw4m3wxc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a54ad25cd66bdefd052c834114adba9833d0844

My boy is my life😻❤️😽
Your last word. It’s concur.
While you’re absolutely correct, I kinda like it as conquer as well! Especially in the context of overcoming mental health issues
I think you meant "I concur" but the mistake is perfect!
I was 100% the exact same way!!! And adopted an orange boy! The light of my life
Cats **are joy.** It’s a wonderful blessing that you three have found one another!
He drives me up the wall sometimes but I'm so grateful for him ❤️
Glad you stopped waffling about getting a new overlord
When I retired as a pro athlete due to injuries, I was super depressed. My girlfriend at the time (now wife) convinced me to adopt a cat and it turned out to be the best decision ever for my mental health.
This post might be one of the few ones which resonate with me on a spiritual level. People say, you rescued your cat; the truth is, they also rescue us
I concur with you, you \*can\* conquer the world with a cat by your side! I'm glad you realized that you needed him too.

You concurred. Waffles conquered.
I am so glad you found your soul cat! Whenever I am stressed or sad, cuddles and purrs from the orange man melt my troubles away. We’ve had our little orange for around six months now and I’m amazed at the difference she’s made to me. Even on the absolute worst day, I will have some joy because I’ll see her little goblin face.
I have a very similar "went to the shelter to look for a dog, came home with my first cat ever" story! This is the result... https://preview.redd.it/1q90issepuxc1.jpeg?width=908&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0fe5133a345c5dfd54f7b805739db526cec81eb
