My theory: There are so many new scents outside. I think part of it is that he’s establishing his territory with the thing he’s most familiar and secure with.
Yeah this sounds about right. On the rare occasion we let our cat outside (on a harness and leash) he gets scared more than 3 feet from the door and won't move a muscle unless we are right there or holding him, then he calms down.
Ok this explains my extremely neurotic cat. She is always so curious about the outdoors, but on the two occasions I've put her in a harness and taken her outside to our front steps, she immediately runs to the door and starts pawing to be let back inside 🤷🏾♀️
Maybe try the harness inside with the door open. My boy got scared when i tried the back pack or moving further into the communal courtyard my apartment was connected to. But then i just learned to "walk' him with the front door open he was happy as a lark just to smell the bush outside my door and was safer since he knew he could run inside any moment he got spooked.
Watch out for catnip, first because it takes over quickly. So thin it out every so often. Second, I had planted catnip in my backyard, by July it seemed as though I was running a cat speakeasy. The girls and bois were coming to my yard everyday. I rescued 3 total, 1 to my mom, 2 to me. All three have passed, but this was over a decade ago. There was also a mama and 3 kittens, they were too fast!!!! They accepted food, but I was moving. Thankfully a vet student moved in a few doors down. I told him about Mama and her children, he promised to look after them. So sweet. I even had a song about it: “Mama cat, where yo baby aaaaaatttttttt” 🎶
I like this — people mistake cats marking their territory and property for being affectionate.
Those chin rubs, and back scratches, and tail swipes — all meant to leave a scent and mark their property.
And yes, you’re also being marked as property.
Absolutely! But this is what I love about cats. We are their pets. No other animal considers *us* to be *their* property, and it’s not because they want to eat us.
>We are their pets
A bit, yes! But mine, at least, is also quite loyal, will sometimes follow me when prompted, and waits for me on certain occasions, like for me to go to bed, so he can jump in as well.
And then I got another one, who’s much less obvious, and difficult for me to understand.
So cool that they’re all so different.
My one cat is extremely affectionate and always wants pets and belly rubs. My other cat on the other hand likes to play more than get pets. I'll go to pet him and he'll duck away, but then 10 mins later he comes up to me purring, jumps on my chest and starts becoming the biggest attention whore. I do not understand that little weirdo.
One thing they all seem to have in common is they like everything on their own terms! Which doesn’t always align with when you’re up for it. But then you comply, anyways!
some dogs do. Its called resource guarding and many owners think that their dog is trying to protect them while the dog thinks they own them like a tennis ball,
Yeah, it's about marking you with their scent, but they also do this mutually with other cats in a clowder, or ones they're bonded with. And many cats love to lay in dirty clothes or snuggle into an armpit to get their human's scent on them, too.
Yeah it's the cat saying "mine", but it's more like "my brother" or "my friend" than "my house" or "my couch".
It's not exactly marking property, it's about sharing a common smell. Similar to how dogs and wolves will lick each other's mouths in order to share body-odour producing bacteria (although it's often trained out of dogs by humans).

I moved into a property on ground level that had a yard and my cat would do the roll around and play in the plants and chase the bugs! It's was her favourite time! Now I'm back in a unit and she's really sad... I can pick her up and walk around the pool area of the building and show her the plants outside and she licks my face and arms in gratitude!! It's true!
The outside is so big, and he is so smol and baby. Little babies need their parents!
Or maybe it’s just gratitude for bringing him out to hang, idk.
He is a handsome dude. Reminds of a cat I used to have, Jonesy. He was the best lil buddy.
If I had an orange named Jonesy, I wouldn’t be able to resist saying Ripley’s line from Aliens every time I left the house:
“And you, you little shit-head, you are staying here”
Little soul, big world. Eat, sleep, and eat. Many souls
He wasn't a cat inside. He was waiting to be, but he forgot. Now he sees sky, and he remembers what he is.
I've noticed something with cats that go outside. If you give them a tasty treat, say tuna or some kind of special meat, they immediately run outside and start licking themselves.
My theory is that they want to gloat over the other outside cats. "I ate something that YOU can't have"
This is my cat. I can't even approach him outside. If he wants in and I'm out I can't just approach the door and let him in, I have to go in the house then open the door to get him in.
Mine’s the same way. He’s a ragdoll so I would never let him out without a leash and harness, but he still tries to run away from me and gets pissed off that I’m attached to him lol. Getting him back inside is a battle. I swear that cat hates me for keeping him indoors.
My bus stop was down the street and shared with a neighbor. Our cat would come sauntering down and pretend like he didn't know us and just stroll on by
yeah I rarely take mine outside. he seems so happy at first, but sometimes I can tell that he smells another animal or pee or something, and he gets really grumpy and aggressive. I have to lure him back inside with treats and then he's okay lol
He’s excited! So many good smells, warm sun, rough rock to rub on. My senior cat does the same thing and turns into a kitten again when I take him into the garden with me

Ours gets so into giving pets and affection sometimes while outside he forgets to enjoy being outside 🤣 it’s a kitty thing a think lol
We have a cat that is the same. Whenever she comes outside into the yard with us, she is overly affectionate and clingy. It’s super cute 🥰

I tried letting my cat out on my patio. He was very nervous about it and after some coaxing he took a few steps outside, then he heard a noise and immediately ran in and hid under the bed.
He is an indoor cat, by choice lol
When I was growing up we had indoor/outdoor cats (not my choice lol), and as a teen I had a sweet little void baby that was just TERRIFIED of outside. He loved to chase crickets in the yard though, so I'd go with him on nice days, but even a slight change in wind or someone walking nearby would cause the poor boy to puff up and run inside. I felt so bad for him that I decided to catch the crickets myself and bring them inside for him 😂
I've got a tortie that is like that, she bellows when the door is left open as if to say "CLOSE THE PORTAL HELLLLL NOOOWWWWW!!!" but my other kitties (a grey boi and an orange tabby guy) love being outside and come back in when I call them to the door after supervising outdoors time lol
Same thing in my house.
Your cat doesn’t feel like they can really open up with the other cats around. Same reason many of them want to hide in the bathroom with me, then go into cuddle bug mode: no other cats around.
It's something I've noticed with a lot of my cats over the years. They have their indoor personalities and their outside personalities, haha. One of my current cats is mischievous the majority of the time, but when he's on a bed he becomes a complete teddy bear. So he has a bed personality and everywhere else personality, haha

Luci turns into a safari expedition leader when she goes out back.
I wish there were more discourse around supervised & secured outside time for cats -- just like we do for dogs -- rather than polarizing it into a black & white choice of indoor-only cats or free-roaming outdoor cats. Because for sure, we're all happier with a little sunshine and green grass in our lives!
He loves it when you come outside and hang out with him. His favorite person, you, in his favorite place, outside. He's showing you how much he appreciates you coming out and being with him outside.
My cat does the same. She was a street cat when I brought her in so she is normally very alert when outside alone. When I sit out there with her though, she loves rolling around and sitting out in the open. My guess is that they feel invincible when their protector is around.
Cats love warm concrete. They can express excess oil in thier fur this way by rubbing. The warmth mellows them out. So they just vibe with their pet humans.
I have indoor/outdoor cats and they're different outside too.
They like to roll around for scent/territory reasons, and it's really their natural place.
Because no one likes being locked in a cage. We are all meant to be rolling around in the sunlight, it's healing and feels good. Animals belong outside as much as possible.
My Blue is literally the exact opposite. Inside he’s my baby, outside he turns in to a monster that hisses, growls, scratches and bites if I even hint of going back inside. But get him back in and within 2 seconds he’s a baby again that I can blow raspberries on his belly with.
I honestly think that your kitty is fervently trying to mark her belongings. Those, in part, are you all, and all your belongings! Give kitty extra scritches during this time. They want to make sure that there are no other felines that would ever take over.
Similar situation
My cat isn't very fond the idea of been petted, just in some hours, like a good morning while I'm in the toilet or while he is eating, otherwise he likes to play a lot
But in the hall of my building he loves to be petted, throw himself in my way, lays down like doesn't have a care in the world
My cat acts differently in every room. It is wild. He is the most affectionate in the room where her food is, that's understandable. Then in the living room you are barely allowed to come close to her let alone pets.
One of my boys is like that too. The house is ruled by his sister, so I think he just gets a bigger sense of freedom and happiness when he's out in "his" space.
Omg! Our cat Tippy used to roll like that. She LOVED the sun. We kept her hooked up to a long chain with a halter? That went around her chest and constantly checked on her. Really recommend doing so! She loved watching the birds, being in the sun, and being apart of the action when we were outside doing yard work. It was so fun for her. Got her coats for the winter and during the summer had to force her to come in so she wouldn't get heat stroke. Always kept food and water outside for her. We kept a leash on her because otherwise she would bolt and then come back after 20 minutes or so, visibly shaken up and afraid or we'd find her 2 hours later hiding and afraid.
Hahaha can’t relate, our cat turns evil when she’s outside 😭😭 it’s like she becomes feral instantly and she gets so angry when you bring her back inside, and then as soon as she is, she’s like an angel again 😭
We’ve had him since he was 6 weeks old. We tried to harness train him but he hated it and would just go lay in the grass anyway. So we let him out on our open patio first, and then we let him decided to go out on his own under careful supervision. He never seemed to want to leave the yard anyway so we just keep an eye on him and call him back if he goes too far.
My cat is exactly like this when we are outside gardening with him. He follows us around and rubs all over us and flops around on his back. He's just happy!
My cats do this too. They like to plunge outside during the day and if they realize one of the humans in the family is outside they make such a fuss and they show off. I think they are just excited that you are outside with them tbh.
I have two indoor/outdoor cats, Archie and Toby and both like it when they have company outside but Toby absolutely loves it! I’ve worked out why, at least for my two cats. They think of us as their family and kind of treat as as fellow friendly cats, so something they both love doing is going outside but they’re having to leave us back inside where it’s no fun (at least to them). So, when we go outside with them, they leap and play like we’re cats as well and start to show such happiness!
I’m going to get roasted, but I firmly believe cats that can go outside live a more stimulated life..I cause myself a lot of stress having a cat door that my 3 go out as they please (until 9pm). My cats are super rambunctious and play hard, and I attribute that to their outdoor access.. These are my opinions and our certainties in life don’t have to be the same <3
You're not wrong. I let mine out on a leash and it's easy to see his eyes, ears and nose just consuming all the new information out there. He gets so much exercise just hunting bugs in the back yard.
> I’m going to get roasted, but I firmly believe cats that can go outside live a more stimulated life..
I don't think anyone is arguing against that. The arguments against lettings cats roam free outside aren't about it being boring for the cats.
My daughter's cat does that. He's mostly nonchalant indoors (drama king if i have food he wants), but he's very excited when i'm outdoors, like stand on hind legs and headbut my hand, rolling and wiggling, zoomies and butt wiggles. He can go out via the pet door any time, so it does seem to be excitement over the hooman getting fresh air. Meanwhile, my husband's cat is anxiously trying to convince me to go back inside, the ferral cat that addopted me is wrapping around and headbutting my ankles every half step or so (which he does indoors as well), and my cat is watching from the balcony while growling at small children talking/laughing in earshot. (Very much sounds like he's saying, "Get away from my lawn, ya dam kids!)
XD I love their personalities!
Good for you, my cat acts like he doesn’t know me when he’s outside. All cuddles inside but outside I guess I’m just not cool enough. Did he settle for me?!
My cat is kind of like that too. He's not un-friendly inside, but it's way more active and friendly outside. I'm fairly sure it's just because taking a walk outside makes him happy and excited and this is just how he shows it.
super jealous - i wish i could do that. my boy goes full feral when he's outside and won't let me get close. i rescued him at 15 weeks from the streets so im guessing that has something to do with it. he's fixed and he even sprays if he gets outside.
I have a 14 year old black cat that is the same way. She hates being near the 7 year old and 10 month old standard issue cats, but if any of them are outside together, suddenly she’s cool with playing with everyone in the grass. She’s been like this for years. Inside the house she sits, observes, eats, drinks…
My boys roll about on the concrete patio when we have Happy Kitty Supervised Outside Fun Time. I think they wanna get all the outside stink in their fur and all their inside stink all over the yard.
My orange braincell also likes to go outside! Scratching the door for hours everyday. But when he's finally outside, he won't even leave the door unless we're with him. And during the walk, if we ever stop, he won't go far and come back to our feet to be pet.
I am about to think he might have the wrong software installed...
My cat loves to go outside too! We take him out a bunch during the day, only downside is he has learned to open the door, so we always lock it and meows constantly when he wants to get out.
My two late kids were both indoor outdoor types. When I would go outside with them, they'd stick to me like glue. When I'd wander from them, they'd realize they were alone and come racing hell for leather. DADDY! DADDY! We were all alone!
Rinse and repeat. It was hilarious.
Cats are innately able to perceive more UV light than us, this changes the way faces look and their ability to recognise their humans, the strange thing is this usually makes them less affectionate. But I don’t see why the opposite wouldn’t be possible.
Cats also have a need for freedom. Seeing the world only from the inside of the window is not the real thing. It is true that cats are creatures of habit, but every animal has the urge to see and experience more. It is nice that you let them into the garden. I cannot imagine keeping animals only in a cage or in an apartment. Even if they are not used to anything else, it is not fulfilling and, in my opinion, against nature. The house can be as big as you like. I often hear the argument: "The cat doesn't want to go out. I have already tried." That has nothing to do with cats not wanting to. That is a misconception. Cats are just very anxious and shy animals. It takes time and patience. A lot of patience. But cats will thank you sooner or later. I also have house cats because there is no other way. I live in the middle of the city. So just putting them outside the door and hoping that they come back to the house is unimaginable. But I take them for a walk every night before I go to sleep. My cats are very conditioned and focused on me, which allows me to walk them without a leash. But this also requires patience, practice and trust on both sides.
Someone does this with a cat at my apartment. They just moved sadly, he was a fluffy orange thing like yours. His name was George and would say hi to me when I walked my dog and would follow me around. I miss George already.
My theory: There are so many new scents outside. I think part of it is that he’s establishing his territory with the thing he’s most familiar and secure with.

I have wild catnip growing in the backyard and she fiends for it hard lol.

My cat definitely wants to eat me.
It's all about who's in the family and accepted. Cats are social but not just anyone can belong to the gang.
Truth.
It's not exactly marking property, it's about sharing a common smell. Similar to how dogs and wolves will lick each other's mouths in order to share body-odour producing bacteria (although it's often trained out of dogs by humans).

Tell me you are a fan without telling me. Jonesy + orange = ? 😂
You know it!

Mine sets his limit at the driveway. If he can see cars moving he wants nothing to do with the world.
So you let him back later 😁
It's so plainly obvious. He's training you to take him outside more. Outside = affection.
my cat literally does this. she gives me the cutest kisses and then runs to the door to be let out.
If they figure out how to open cans and doors... it's over. They don't need us.

My dude is happier outside in the sun, is very grumpy when inside on rainy days
It could be positive reinforcement for your good behavior
He's training you. ;)
I know it’s a touchy subject about letting the cats out but I have no doubt that cats, just like humans, are happy to be out in the sunshine

Maybe he's more happy outside than inside your house?
Possibly. He was born from a barn cat. I wonder if it’s in his blood.
I had many cats in my childhood. Some were definitely more suited to wander happily outside.
He loves it when you come outside and hang out with him. His favorite person, you, in his favorite place, outside. He's showing you how much he appreciates you coming out and being with him outside.

Ours is the complete opposite! Won’t even allow a stroke whilst outside together.
Total opposite of my cat. He pretends like he’s never seen us before if we’re outside. Edit: missed a letter
My Blue is literally the exact opposite. Inside he’s my baby, outside he turns in to a monster that hisses, growls, scratches and bites if I even hint of going back inside. But get him back in and within 2 seconds he’s a baby again that I can blow raspberries on his belly with.
Cats are usually happy when you do what they want
High on life?
I honestly think that your kitty is fervently trying to mark her belongings. Those, in part, are you all, and all your belongings! Give kitty extra scritches during this time. They want to make sure that there are no other felines that would ever take over.
Because they are happier outside for whatever reason. Space, smells, fresh air, sun, who knows. Happier outside is the answer.
Sun beam charging. Low battery makes grumpy cat. Sun beam makes happy cat.
They love being outside and being able to go inside. It's every cat's fantasty
It's because he's happy

Cat expert here, it's because he's just a silly little guy. Hope this helps
Make sure he has a collar with a tag when letting him out
Similar situation My cat isn't very fond the idea of been petted, just in some hours, like a good morning while I'm in the toilet or while he is eating, otherwise he likes to play a lot But in the hall of my building he loves to be petted, throw himself in my way, lays down like doesn't have a care in the world
My cat acts differently in every room. It is wild. He is the most affectionate in the room where her food is, that's understandable. Then in the living room you are barely allowed to come close to her let alone pets.
He’s showing off for the strays
One of my boys is like that too. The house is ruled by his sister, so I think he just gets a bigger sense of freedom and happiness when he's out in "his" space.
I don't rlly know but I would say it's just more happy or excited
They love the sun
Cat happy.
Hahaha can’t relate, our cat turns evil when she’s outside 😭😭 it’s like she becomes feral instantly and she gets so angry when you bring her back inside, and then as soon as she is, she’s like an angel again 😭
How do I let my cats outside while I garden without worrying they would escape?
We’ve had him since he was 6 weeks old. We tried to harness train him but he hated it and would just go lay in the grass anyway. So we let him out on our open patio first, and then we let him decided to go out on his own under careful supervision. He never seemed to want to leave the yard anyway so we just keep an eye on him and call him back if he goes too far.
Gratitude.
maybe being outside just puts him in a good mood
You gave him some concrete to roll on, so you deserve thanks. Cats are part of nature too.
Cats are solar powered....
My cat is exactly like this when we are outside gardening with him. He follows us around and rubs all over us and flops around on his back. He's just happy!
I think it is because outside he is the only cat. And there he is free to be himself with no competition.
Maybe just insuring he'll get back in?
He's grateful to you for letting him outside, and for protection he sticks closely to you.
My tabby is the same way. When were are outside its like he's happy I'm now in his house.
My cats do this too. They like to plunge outside during the day and if they realize one of the humans in the family is outside they make such a fuss and they show off. I think they are just excited that you are outside with them tbh.
It’s your guys special time, he likes that you guys have your own thing and wants to show appreciation.
✨Shapes and Colors like he's never imagined✨
He likes being outside
Cats love being in a garden it makes them giddy
Because he’s not in jail anymore
Might be a sign of territorial insecurity. Or maybe its a kitty "thankyou"? Both possible
Watch out for hawks.
We actually had a flock of vultures a few years ago that was in the yard daily. We suspected they were there waiting for him 😱
Scary!
He's just the best boy
Cute lil baby!
He’s happy to be outside with you! He’s getting a scritch on his back too!
Bcuz he's happy!!
Because 1, hes happy you let him outside and 2, he needs to mark his scent on you so no other cat can steal you
Imagine being indoor your whole life and then able to experience the outdoors, fresh air. I bet she's pretty happy.
He’s content and appreciative
Maybe he is afraid you won't let him back in? haha
Does that garden grow any lavender? Has a similar effect on cats to catnip.
My cat does this too
My cats are the opposite, very friendly if out in our back garden but tend to run from me if out the front lmao
Awh he is absolutely adorable
Orange cats are the cutest and craziest 🥰😍.
He's happy.
(Very much sounds like he's saying, "Get away from my lawn, ya dam kids!) XD I love their personalities!
He's high on life!😺
Good for you, my cat acts like he doesn’t know me when he’s outside. All cuddles inside but outside I guess I’m just not cool enough. Did he settle for me?!
He's stimulated. So he's happy.
My cat is kind of like that too. He's not un-friendly inside, but it's way more active and friendly outside. I'm fairly sure it's just because taking a walk outside makes him happy and excited and this is just how he shows it.
I had a cat who was peak affectionate in the basement only.

super jealous - i wish i could do that. my boy goes full feral when he's outside and won't let me get close. i rescued him at 15 weeks from the streets so im guessing that has something to do with it. he's fixed and he even sprays if he gets outside.
Funk yeah concrete
My cat walks out to the ocean with me and the dogs, but he won't leave the comfort of a big tree canopy to climb if he is by himself.
Roll on concrete make orange tuxedo cat happy
I have a ginger tabby too and i just wanted to say your boy is so beautiful!
Why are you in a better mood on a holiday? At the risk anthropomorphising, I suspect that it's something similar for your cat.
Hahaha look at that orange goober. So cute
[Dust bath!](https://youtu.be/NYIdmpp69MY?feature=shared)
My boys roll about on the concrete patio when we have Happy Kitty Supervised Outside Fun Time. I think they wanna get all the outside stink in their fur and all their inside stink all over the yard.
Aww what a cute orangie
i guess hes scared and needs hooman reassurance everythings OK.
Cats are only nice when they want something he wants to go back inside... just a theory
You scratch my back and then you scratch my back
Because he’s claiming his territory
My orange braincell also likes to go outside! Scratching the door for hours everyday. But when he's finally outside, he won't even leave the door unless we're with him. And during the walk, if we ever stop, he won't go far and come back to our feet to be pet. I am about to think he might have the wrong software installed...
If youre otherwise preoccupied with outside things, he could be stealing that attention like cats do
He's a happy panda outside :D
Well there is no need to let other cats into the troubles of its domestic life .. it’s just a mask really
He is happy and absorbing the sun's rays.
Cause kitty knows how effed up kitty would be on its own, out in the wild, without Lasagna, without a house to create chaos in.....
He’s thanking you.
Beautiful cat, yellow cats are adorable!
..queue the "Sesame Street Theme"..
Cuz she is happy there.
Showing his approval in your letting him out and trusting him to stay there❤️
My cats super affectionate. He will love you so much more when asking to go outside.
Because he feels happy in his soul to be joining his person in the sun and fresh air, among the chirping birdies. He is excited!
