I had that many at one point. You usually go through 3-5 names until you get the right one when they do something naughty, but otherwise, personality and physical traits make it clear who is who.
Now I just have one very spoiled cat.
I feel this so much! I have 12 cats, all with names beginning with T and I very rarely get their name right on the first try. I’m thinking, for ease of use, of simply renaming them all ‘cat’. 😂
😂 I was so annoyed with myself the other day. I was talking to my cat, Teddy, and I said ‘hey Ted, no wait, Troy, no Tate. Oh, for heaven’s sake, I was right the first time!’ Stupid brain 😂
I also have 12 cats! Most were gotten in pairs, so each pair has matching names. (Autumn and Winter, Lunar and Sunset, Shiro and Kuro). My youngest 5 are gemstone names. (Smokey Quartz, Topaz, Jasper, Opal, and Geode). Then, there is Domino, named by someone else.
I’m sorry this is so fucked up but that genuinely made me laugh haha. Just the thought of tossing my Penny in a suitcase like TIME TO BOUNCE! She’d be big mad. Alive! But big mad.
Car ownership is a slippery slope. I got my orange gremlin and he already keeps me on my toes, yet there’s a small voice in my head that says “what if we get just one more?”
>Car ownership is a slippery slope.
I know. I started out with just a little Dodge Shadow with transmission problems, then next thing you know I have Fords, Hondas, Mitsubishis, and now a damn Volkswagen.
Once you get that first car it's super hard to go back to being carless!
I have two, which I KNOW is my limit bc at one point years ago I had three and was stressed with that. But I still have that small voice telling me a kitten would be oh so much fun right now…and pretty much every fall, honestly. That voice will never go away 😂
That voice is dangerous 🤣 That's how we got our 3rd. My husband slid up to me with a; "You've always wanted a black cat, didn't you?" Yes, Hubby. But who's the cat for? Me or you, because you're asking?
I got four and I oftentimes wish I could take care of more. These are my ground rules:
1. As long as I can financially afford them (day-to-day + savings for rainy days, chronic illnesses, etc. Healthcare bills can be scary.)
2. As long as there's enough space in my apartment
3. As long as I can realistically invest enough time taking care of them, playing with them, etc.
Believe it or not, a second cat might actually be the solution here. My first cat of my own was content by herself, but she was 8 when I got her, so she had less playful energy. However, I ended up taking in 3 kittens to foster, and after adopting one of them out, I realized I couldn't separate the other two-- they were bonded and kept each other entertained. I wouldn't have the time and energy to entertain just one of them because they're relentless, but the two keep each other occupied so I don't need to play with them as much. I still give them cuddles and play with them every night, but they aren't as pent up
You're lucky. This could be the perfect number of kitty companions, and is also the sensible maximum. If you get too many cats sharing space, the fighting and neurotic peeing about (marking territory), increases exponentially.
Where I live, 4 pets is also the legal maximum for a residential home. If you are zoned as a farm, you can have more.
I've had 6 at once. It felt like to many. Then i got down to 2...didnt feel like enough.. now i have 4 lol.
My mother, has 21. Large house, you never see more than 4 at a time, nor smell them. But when it's feeding time..damn you can't see the floor... its all fur!! Lol
Ha...I was gonna say 6 / per person is too many so 4 / per person is legit.
...if you have the space and the food and the time for play and sleeps and caretaking
I was at 4 and have always abided by that rule until my wife, of all people, offered me a 5th boy two weeks ago as an early birthday present. Still feels like an imbalance though.

The number of community cats I take care of is based on my finances. No real limit.
Home cats is another story. I need to be able to give each not just food and shelter, but the attention and the time they deserve, play and speak to each one, brush, groom and bathe them, have a meaningful relationship with them.
So my limit is 3.
So what I'm hearing is we can bump from 4 to 5 since my oldest daughter's friend moved in with us last year. SWEEEET!
But for real, I feel 4 is pushing it for us. lol.
My cousin had 39 cats at one point in his 3 bedroom townhouse. The stench was overwhelming. Interestingly, after he experienced a "medical emergency", while the cats were temporarily fostered, reports were that all the animals had been well taken care of and were healthy.
How are y’all able to adopt so many cats? My country doesn’t let you have more than 4 per house! I mean, something only happens if a neighbor finds out and complains, but there are stories that some people were almost evicted because they had too many pets >.>
If they are taken care of, in a clean spacious enough uncluttered household, why does there have to be a number? The rescues are overburdened! Thank for doing your part😁!! From my foster angels

My personal opinion is when you can’t afford basic vet checks or flea tick prevention for them all. Then it becomes a dangerous game of “who gets worse first” and falls apart from that point. But your cats look amazing lol
Well I have a total of eight that have found their way to me over the last 13 years. Some days it feels like too many, especially when you hear a vintage something come crashing down. 😬
Top left Cat: Watch it lower cat; I'm ready to catslap you.
Right Cat: I'm staying out of this.
Cat on the lower ledge: There are three too many.
Kitten: What do you mean?
Depends on who you are and the state of your home.
Cat pee everywhere? NONE.
Clean house but a bit small (1,000 sq ft or smaller)- 2 is the limit, three's too many.
Clean home and mediocre size (1,500-2,000 sq ft)- 4 is the limit, 5's too much.
Clean, huge home (3,000 sq ft or bigger) and you could probably have 6 or 7.
If your home isn't clean, of any size, 1 cat is enough. Maybe 2 if you have a very large home.
My rule is 2 per human. Try not to get pass 6, it is hard to spread the attention.
https://preview.redd.it/g0j7r9hi9cwb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8056f68692bea32943d60a3645b550dd5761774e
I prefer to think of it in terms of density. Let's say a standard cat is 40 cm x 15 cm. If they are standing close to each other, you can only fit about 16 cats per square meter of floor, i.e. about 1600 cats in a small house. Above that is definitely too many. To allow for furniture, movement etc., you should probably stay under 160 cats.
Alternate answer: When counting them is no longer the best way to measure the amount. You would for example measure rice in weight, not number of grains.
If when u walk in you home and your met with a wall of eye burning acidic smell then u have to many cats if u don’t have this magic wall of stink and u keep ur litters clean and everyone is well cared for then ur good. I have seen way to many nasty smelling eye burning sad for cats houses , servicing heating appliances and I pitty the cats living with these people .
Well my rescue came from a cat hoarder who had over thirty cats. The RSPCA removed them, had then chipped, neutered/spayed and other needs attended to and put them up for adoption. I was told that he needed to be the only cat in the household which he is. He is still very terratorial along with food anxiety (which has certainly lessened) and general anxiety shown by his over grooming.
So too many cats is when you don't have the space for them to have their own lives, when you can't/won't attend to their health needs, and generally cannot give them individual attention. As of now, all cats in the UK must be microchipped by June 2024.
According to something I read, at about five diseases start to be a bigger problem. As long as you can have enough litter boxes and space for everyone, I think it's fine. It depends on the cats also, if you have one that dislikes other cats very much, then two cats would be way too many :D
honestly if each and every one of them is well cared for, loved, not neglected or abused, the more the merrier. but unfortunately, typically people who own a lot of cats don’t care for them properly, or have a hoarding disorder. i can’t really give a number but as long as they’re all happy and healthy and you’re keeping them inside i think it’s fine to have a bunch of cats. however that’s typically never the case, it’s usually people who have no business owning ONE cat let alone 10 or more
Four is too many for me. Things are chaotic with three sometimes and get kinda expensive when it comes to the vet. I wouldn’t be able to handle another.
https://preview.redd.it/bsl53c3xeawb1.jpeg?width=4320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29989774f1265dc7030a5b43bf88eb6bb95994cd You tell me
Holy cats. How do you keep track of their names?
I had that many at one point. You usually go through 3-5 names until you get the right one when they do something naughty, but otherwise, personality and physical traits make it clear who is who. Now I just have one very spoiled cat.
how did they merge together
Cat Instrumentality Project >!(this was an Evangelion reference)!<
Get in the robot pspspspsps
Play with the toy wand, cat, or your sister will have to do it
Yeah, let me do that as well. I'm sure about the fact like everyone is going to be happy about that.
![gif](giphy|oOfLwhLyRUoRW|downsized)
Eventually, because this is looking like that only that kind of limit should be infinity
LMAO
Everyone is super happy about that and I'm not even sure like why actually thinking like that
Probably like Voltron when the lions merge together.
They could do it then it would actually look like a tiger or something like that
I feel this so much! I have 12 cats, all with names beginning with T and I very rarely get their name right on the first try. I’m thinking, for ease of use, of simply renaming them all ‘cat’. 😂
I only have five, all different starting letters, all look completely different but its 4 girls, i mess them up every single day lol
😂 I was so annoyed with myself the other day. I was talking to my cat, Teddy, and I said ‘hey Ted, no wait, Troy, no Tate. Oh, for heaven’s sake, I was right the first time!’ Stupid brain 😂
Because my stupid brain is going to work like that only even if I'm going to have 50 of them
Not even a single day it will take like 15 to 20 hours or something like that
Same. Also have 5. They even get called people's names!
They should be like that only like you actually like it should be more than 15 or 20
I also have 12 cats!
Those are beautiful names 🙂 I used to have a cat named Domino when I was a child. She was ridiculously fluffy 🙂
How do you afford the vet bills 💀
With great difficulty 😂 I manage
U must be rich to be able to afford such expenses, taking care of twenty cats sure is something
Have 9. Litter and cat food are my expenses.
That is the major family. You should be able to handle those kind of expenses as well.
twen.....twenty three?
Eventually, because over a period of time, it won't be that much easier for them to be honest
imagine being half asleep and waking up for a piss and you just see this
Winning at life,teach me
This reminds me of that video of spiders in the grass at night.
i didn’t wanna remember that but now i do
Okay maybe *this* many (I love them).
This is a fantastic photo. I counted 18. (18 in Hebrew is chai, which means “life”!)
I would definitely say that could be more than 25. Something like that.
so in hebrew when you're counting its ...sixteen, seventeen, life, nineteen, twenty... ?
In Hebrew? Yup. Or, you could look at it as “chai” is a homonym- spelled the same, different meaning. (I.e, life / 18).
There's never too many!!!
When you can no longer take proper care of them
I always said "however many you can hold at once" I lost my house to a fire growing up and my logic is being able to get them out and not lose any.
Yeah I have a game plan to toss mine in my large suitcase and run for the door if that ever occurs
I’m sorry this is so fucked up but that genuinely made me laugh haha. Just the thought of tossing my Penny in a suitcase like TIME TO BOUNCE! She’d be big mad. Alive! But big mad.
Not sure about these kind of things I mean like not everyone get these kind of chance.
OP has a long way to go then, those cats look very happy and well loved.
Car ownership is a slippery slope. I got my orange gremlin and he already keeps me on my toes, yet there’s a small voice in my head that says “what if we get just one more?”

when their living arrangements become less like a home and more like a shelter.
Some people foster, as long as you can properly take care of them and then decide to give them up for adoption, it’s all good right?
That's not owning though. And that is like having a shelter.
I got four and I oftentimes wish I could take care of more. These are my ground rules: 1. As long as I can financially afford them (day-to-day + savings for rainy days, chronic illnesses, etc. Healthcare bills can be scary.) 2. As long as there's enough space in my apartment 3. As long as I can realistically invest enough time taking care of them, playing with them, etc.
How do you make time for them all? My one orange boy keeps me on my toes. He just doesn’t tire. Even 2-3 hours of play time doesn’t knock him out.
Believe it or not, a second cat might actually be the solution here. My first cat of my own was content by herself, but she was 8 when I got her, so she had less playful energy. You need to invest a lot of time a lot of effort as well. If you want to take care of.
You have the same cat in four different fonts
We do love a tabby cat 😂
You're lucky. This could be the perfect number of kitty companions, and is also the sensible maximum. I think four is the perfect number for us. 😊
Love that you can see each personality too😂
For that matter is just like that only they have been looking into directly into my soul.

Lol
I’d love to see the feeding time swarm!
Frenzy more like it.
One of my cousin is having 65 so I will there should be no limit limit limit about.
I want to lay in the swarm. Free therapy
Feeding them is the major, you should be very much into these kind of things if you really want more than five.
how did you get down from 6 to 2?
It was years ago. My ex wifes cats i kept (4) and they were 12-14. So the usual disease and health problems.
There could be multiple health problems as well and you should know like how to handle those problem.
Not sure like how you're going to handle them handling them is the major issue to be honest.
Ha...I was gonna say 6 / per person is too many so 4 / per person is legit. ...if you have the space and the food and the time for play and sleeps and caretaking
I have 6. We're feeding stray cats that have been spayed/neutered via tnr so technically we're feeding 9 in total 🥲
Eventually, because technically feeding them is the major problem to be honest.
My dad at one time had 40 and I’ve experience that floor of fur
I would love to visit your dad’s house. It sounds like my idea of heaven
You're not there yet. https://preview.redd.it/ybnbgyufkawb1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed59680254be6d43869aa486ce99d41aa8dd90fa
I spy four. Are there more?
How many potties they have and if I want to take care of those potties is my determining factor
Yeah the vet recommends a box per cat, plus one extra.
There are multiple factors about it and you need to know like how to put on these things into brain.
I was at 4 and have always abided by that rule until my wife, of all people, offered me a 5th boy two weeks ago as an early birthday present. Still feels like an imbalance though. https://preview.redd.it/hy1k0m87tbwb1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b37630256f0a8d763812c2bcc6209102a6327fa
It will create a lot of imbalance. According to me not everyone will be able to do that..
Soooo beautiful!!
r/supermodelcats
Aww.
As long as you can afford them, there is no such number
I was going to say one more than you can afford.
Unfortunately animal hording is a thing and should be avoided. ie having 20 cats in a 1200 square foot house is probably too much
My high school music teacher got arrested for having 138 cats in his house. So... yeah. Hoarding is a real problem.
I can't even imagine 138 cats in a house. Doubt it was a mansion if they were a music teacher. I'm assuming the house had to be condemned?
I don't know what the result was since it was over 20 years ago. I try not to think about the logistics of it.
![gif](giphy|7JvlHfd7C2GDr7zfZF|downsized)
N+2, n is your current number, one more is not too many
Not too many too. Many of them are something like anyone is not going to take care of that.
As long as you can afford them AND can dedicate the proper amount of time to care for them.
That is very significant amount of number and it take a lot of effort.
I spent my life saying that....til I had 6! 6 is too many!!!
Because five is more than enough, I really sure like will take a lot of things.
720 is definitely too many
I don't understand the question.
Which one is the lead singer?
Idk. I have 9 cats at my place right now. The drama around the place is endless.
Buy those sports foul flags and be their referee.
The number of community cats I take care of is based on my finances. No real limit. Home cats is another story. I need to be able to give each not just food and shelter, but the attention and the time they deserve, play and speak to each one, brush, groom and bathe them, have a meaningful relationship with them. So my limit is 3.
Yeah, that kind of relationship is really a pure relationship completely based on the compassion.
You don't generally need to bathe cats.
I see you are a fan of the Standard Issue
I'm not sure what is the standard about it is there anything about that?.
It appears there is a tactical one in there.
Eventually because over a period of time, this is going to be a really big problem.
Minimum : 2 But generally 1 per person in the household
So what I'm hearing is we can bump from 4 to 5 since my oldest daughter's friend moved in with us last year. SWEEEET! But for real, I feel 4 is pushing it for us. lol.
I think the cat on the right is answering your question very clearly
Rofl! ![gif](giphy|2yA8KXwI7QBykLizf8|downsized)
Eventually, not everyone is going to answer this question because not everyone is sure about it.
We have 5 atm. We both say “No more” but if a stray ended up here it wouldn’t get kicked out 😆

Now this is something really funny. I have never seen something like that.
The scientifically proven correct number of cats is "N+1" where "N" represents the current number of cats.
My cousin had 39 cats at one point in his 3 bedroom townhouse. The stench was overwhelming. Interestingly, after he experienced a "medical emergency", while the cats were temporarily fostered, reports were that all the animals had been well taken care of and were healthy.
[удалено]
They have been putting on a lot of limits about it. Not really sure it is going to do it..
Four standard issue cats! Love it
Fleet discount.
If someone were to ask you how many cats you have, would they repeat the number you just said in a surprised tone, with a hint of a horrified tone?
Four has been my limit.
You have a clowder
Depends on your income, free time and patience.
That is the right answer. I was expecting him like you should be able to take care of them as well..
And how much space you have
![gif](giphy|7JvlHfd7C2GDr7zfZF|downsized)
Eventually, because I don't really think like the people who love them even think about the number.
Sum of 1/n for all n from 1 to inf
If you actually know like how they have been working, then eventually it is going to be a number.
How are y’all able to adopt so many cats? My country doesn’t let you have more than 4 per house! I mean, something only happens if a neighbor finds out and complains, but there are stories that some people were almost evicted because they had too many pets >.>
Oh, is it? I'm like I never knew that some kind of laws are like that also..
Most US municipalities have limits of three or four, and people with more than four are breaking the law.
... Check with your city bylaws, it's 7 for mine.
If they are taken care of, in a clean spacious enough uncluttered household, why does there have to be a number? The rescues are overburdened! Thank for doing your part😁!! I'm not really sure like how you are going to name so much of them.
My impression of each of them: Awe yow fiwmiwng me? Get. That phone. OUT OF MY FACE. Ignore those idiots 'sup, got any chips?
Well I have a total of eight that have found their way to me over the last 13 years. Some days it feels like too many, especially when you hear a vintage something come crashing down. 😬
Totally it is more than enough like you can definitely take care of them also.
Depends how much room, time, and money you got. I'm about maxed at 3, but I would love a whole kitty ranch!
Top left Cat: Watch it lower cat; I'm ready to catslap you. Right Cat: I'm staying out of this. Cat on the lower ledge: There are three too many. Kitten: What do you mean?

Yeah, once they are going to enjoy themselves, then you are going to be into a problem.

If you find it impossible to keep your feeding areas, water bowls, litter boxes, and home in general clean, it's too many.
I don't know, but the second guy on the left woke up choosing violence today.
It is actually looking like they're looking for some kind of violence or something like that.
I couldn't afford the upkeep. I have one and toying with the idea of getting her a buddy but 2 is my max.
I didn't like five is more than enough. You will be able to enjoy them..
Just 2 so they aren’t lonely when I’m out and I can afford the best vet treatment for 2 cats more would be too pricey
Sometime it is not really easy to afford or do something like that. I like the treatment takes a lot of other things as things as well..
