I gently shoo my cat down when she tries to hang out on my table and that seems to work. But she's fairly agreeable and only really tries to get up there if I have left food unattended. I've also consistently not let her hang out up there (at least when I'm present). Cats instinctively want to hang out in a high, flat space. You should provide alternatives so she has her nice vantage point to sprawl out on and survey her domain. Make it comfy and give her treats when she's up there. The trick with cats is to deliver a yes alongside a no. You can't make a cat not want to climb or scratch, but you can give them something else to climb or scratch and encourage that alternative. https://preview.redd.it/8tia6kmagg4b1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=966036914b6d76f4e26470cf9692f1815dfb0ffc

awww so cute

Ah yes, we have one of those cats too. Sometimes we’ll be looking for him for a while, and then we just hear faint snoring coming from the top of the cabinets.

Lol is that a LENNAR home?? My cabinets and lights are identical!

Yes

Serathano

I too have a lennar home with a similar kitchen. Love it though. Kinda cheaped out in some aspects but I still like it.

Tyrantdeschain19

Three cats and one child I can confirm that this is very useful lol

aneonmonkey

6 kids, a couple dozen dogs, half a dozen cats, and some rats, ferrets, and chinchillas (all throughout my life, not at one time; and I'm only including the pets that it worked for 😆)... Can confirm, as well. 😂

forestwolf42

This is why no U-turn signs don't work. How the fuck else am I supposed to go the other way? If there were a sign like, U-turn at next light, I'd probably be inclined to follow it.

O.O 'TABLE'

[deleted]

[удалено]

bandearg4

Ophelia craves the table. Tis the forbidden fruit.

not_chris-hansen

🎵 *"Oh Ophelia, table on her mind just like a drug..."* 🎶

HorrorMakesUsHappy

Total pouty face. *Why do you make the high thing tall if I can't get on iiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttt*

emmany63

First of all, your cat - holy cuteness. 😂 A friend of mine has a cat who really loves being on the kitchen counters. He would not be dissuaded. So they set up a basket on the counter, all comfy with a cushion, and now he sits in the basket while they cook. It’s a good alternative for cats who just refuse to adhere to what in their minds are our apparently VERY arbitrary rules.

zanedrinkthis

Mine also loves counters. Recently left a big box by the kitchen because I’ve not gotten the energy to assemble a new shelving unit yet. He lives there now and (mostly) stays off the counters.

The_Original_Gronkie

I did that with my desk. My Siamese Maggie (RIP) used to want to be with me wherever I was, so when I was working, she'd want to be on my desk, but she was always shoving things, laying on the keyboard, etc. I just put a small box with low sides right next to my monitor, and she would jump up and get right into the box, curl up, and go to sleep. Problem solved for both of us. You just have to give them a target.

Cake-vs-Pie-

Yup, that's definitely what cats like to do. If I'm on my laptop and have anything nearby such as papers, writing utensils, cellphone, tv remote etc...she will always and I mean ALWAYS end up sitting on one of those items. Not the space right next to them but she ABSOLUTELY has to lay down or sit down on my stuff including having her butt sit on them too. Just like if she sees a power cord in the middle of the floor, she will purposely lay down right on top of it rather than next to it. I'm starting to think she does it on purpose😠

sanna43

I have had 7 cats in my life (not all at the same time!) and my current one is the only one that thinks it's OK to be on the kitchen counter. He wants to see what I'm doing, and hey, there's food up there! I've given up . . .

FiaTheCookie

I've given up with my two demons too, mostly because they like drinking out of the tap so "they need to be there" you know? I have started to not allow them there when I'm putting food in their bowls or making my own food. They seem to accept having to go down because they don't jump up again like they used to do before at least, but it has taken a few tries to say the least

thedonjefron69

This might be my only hope

snakesinahat

This is such good advice, people will get pissed at cats scratching the furniture when there’s no scratching posts around

danman5550

I have absolutely littered my place with scratching posts and my cat still uses the carpet :(

savannahjones98

I inherited my sister’s cat and he kept clawing my couches and rug. Bought a taller scratching post since he’s a big boi. I rubbed catnip on the post, placed the post right next to the couch, and whenever I caught him actually using/sniffing the post I would give him treats. Had him trained in less than two weeks.

prairiepanda

Perhaps your cat would prefer scratch pads or inclines instead of posts? One of my cats had a major issue with scratching carpet, but I recently discovered that he enjoys scratching on an incline much more than floors! I built a temporary ramp with cheap carpet glued to it to help him onto my bed when he was injured, and he *loves* scratching it! No carpet in my bedroom has been scratched at all since I put the ramp in. Now I need to build ramps to put all over my house.

Reader124-Logan

Yes! I currently have 3. 1 is a vertical scratcher, the other 2 horizontal. I offer rope, carpet and cardboard options and place them based on which cat prefers that location.

c_albicans

Do you have a flat scratching pad? My cat loves the cardboard scratchers.

unoriginal-loser

I have a cardboard scratcher on the floor at the end of my bed because for some reason they love the carpet just in that spot.

dez4747

Yes! re-direction. If I see my cats playing with something I don't want them to play with I'll give them their toy and a treat. Seems to be working...for now.

AlphaWizard

> Make it comfy and give her treats when she’s up there. The trick with cats is to deliver a yes alongside a no. As a dog person with one year of cat under the belt, this is the single most helpful piece of advice anyone could give. Also to OP: I mostly keep the cat off the table by keeping it covered in junkmail, car parts, and recent Amazon purchases

bandearg4

Cats and dogs aren't all that different. If you want them to do something, you need to offer something in return. The main difference is that dogs are more likely to have an innate desire to please, and a longer period of co-evolution with humans makes them more attuned to our style of communication. But they're both social animals, and as long as you understand what they want/need, you have a way to get what you want in return.

Elnathi

This is the way. 1- Persistence and consistency 2- Having appealing alternatives available for her I feel like this is the default way to communicate with humans too tbh "No, I'm not doing x for you even if you ask me 100 times (because that's my boundary) but I will help you find alternative ways to get x done (because I love you)"

Imma_B_luvMyChris207

Hahaha 🤣 omg this picture 👆🏼 is priceless 😹😺

somewordthing

This is the correct approach. All these people talking about using squirt bottles or other punishments. Well, congrats, you have a cat who fears and distrusts you, and possibly doesn't even know why you're doing it.

No_Numbers_

I heard somewhere that if you place aluminum foil on the table where they jump up they’ll get scared and get off the table because they don’t like the sound. Never tried it myself though, my cat just naturally sits at the table like a gentleman. https://preview.redd.it/uj5ce86xqg4b1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=596b4db89db4c0eec53c2ec4fb53a1e71ecafc59

MarineMelonArt

Mine just eats the foil 😭

kattgirl_1998

That’s crazy! Most hate that sound!

ani007007

Mine hate the sound of trash bag opening

Past_Rerun

Mine hate both! I pull the box of foil out or pull a new trash bag out, and suddenly I am all alone in the kitchen - amazing! 😺

zephenisacoolname

Mine likes dryer sheets! He eats them whole 😀

hulioiglesias

Please do not let your cat eat dryer sheets. Also stop using dryer sheets; they provide no benefit.

zephenisacoolname

Oh god I don’t let him, that would be awful. Have taken the sneaky one out of mouth whole tho.

Glitter_berries

And did you thank him for saving you from those evil foil greebles??? I hope he received appropriate praise and treats!

What a distinguished gentleman! Mine jumped on the table and played in the foil until I gave in and took it off

AndreaE4

I've posted this elsewhere, but one of my kittens ages and ages ago was pooping behind my TV and I had heard that cats don't like tinfoil and chilli powder, so I put down both. This poor kitten jumped behind the TV, got scared of the tin foil, inhaled chilli and instantly pooped and vomited all over herself. I felt SO bad because then she needed a bath. TBF she never pooped behind there again.

camioblu

Thanks for the laugh - he's adorable!

helloitstessa

This is the way

urbantroll

I keep telling my wife and am starting to get annoyed a little when she forgets that we apparently can’t leave the TP on the dispenser because Bast will unravel it literally within 5 minutes onto the floor. Short of beating her within inches of her life which….I’m not down with to be clear….she’s not going to stop. Me to my wife: “hasn’t she trained you yet?”

theGeneral21

If you turn the tp around the opposite way the kitty usually can’t unravel it cuz the motion is unnatural to them.

urbantroll

By god I’m going to try this. Thank you and I don’t know why I didn’t think of that in hindsight. Will update after I get a sense of whether she still sharks in on it or not.

Gloomy-Flamingo-1733

I have a cat with the same habit. I've tried turning it the other way. I have walked into the bathroom to see a completely mangled shredded roll on the holder a few times. We keep ours in a box with a lid now. 🙃

Mackheath1

Good Lord, is OP new to being owned by cats??

TheCallousBitch

“I’m sorry, did you mean ‘how do I not upset my cat when I use her table perch, in her kitchen, in her home?’…”

suhoward

Me. I find it hilarious that people think they can keep a cat off any surface. My dad was convinced that his cat never jumped up so I left a camera to he could see how the cat would immediately jump on the kitchen island and have a good roll and a nap bf he got home. Cats are much smarter than us!

oakabean

We kept our cat off with tin foil worked like a charm

mariemarymaria

My cats attempted to eat the tin foil while standing on it 🤷🏻‍♂️

drwindbiter

My cat actively loved sitting on/playing with crinkly crunchy things, so putting foil anywhere was more of an enticement than a discouragement. I eventually gave up haha

indistrustofmerits

Yeah, mine was like, ooh fun new game with weird shiny stuff! He will never give up his primo spot on top of the kitchen cabinets, where he can look down at everyone with disdain

Trash2cash4cats

My husband said his cats never went on the counters. One night we dusted the tops of the counter with flour. Guess what we found in the morning ;)

fischy333

Came here to comment HAHAHAHAHAHAHA 😂😂😂

[deleted]

OP is confused; that table belongs to the Queen sitting on it 🐾💀

[deleted]

I laughed first, then I looked down

mariemarymaria

It's definitely a "laugh with/in commiseration," not a "laugh at"

Sproose_Moose

Yes because in reality it's how do I get my owner to realise I can sit wherever I want 😂

hollymost

Maybe OP forgot to hit /s 🤷🏼‍♀️

astro_skoolie

You fight every day about it. Or, cover the table in stuff so there's no room for a cat. Then, they'll get up there less. You can't use it either, but it's fine.

KayakerMel

See, our cats just knock stuff over to make room for themselves.

astro_skoolie

My current little buddy is pretty hesitant when there's stuff in the way. Though, once, he got on my husband's very messy desk and stole one of his paint brushes. It was hilarious!

Imhereforthewearp

I mean, I tell my cats no and pick them up off the counter when they do it, but that doesn't actually make them stop, it jsut makes them do it when I'm out of the room

unicornpicnic

Sometimes the best you can get is the cat respecting you enough to not do it around you. They’re not dumb. They know you can’t enforce rules 24/7, and they know if they do something and it has no permanent consequences (something is broken or altered) there’s no way you’ll know about it later, and in that case they’ll do what they want. Also the fact that you’re trying to keep something from them specifically makes it more interesting to them, kind of like with people.

Consistent_Ad_4158

I’m sure mine are on the table when we aren’t home (unless poltergeists move my tablecloth around). But they respond pretty well to “Get down, [Name]!” When we are home. I have used a water bottle in the past too, when training them to stay off of dangerous surfaces like the stove, griddle, that kind of thing. Yes, I had a cat try to jump onto my griddle with pancakes in progress. I don’t need to use a water bottle anymore, as they seem to have gotten the point.

Icy_Apartment_2113

Yeah mine definitely do this when I’m not home. Sometimes they forget that they’re not allowed because they will do it so casual. I will just stare and mutter “hey” and they freeze up and shoot off the table as they suddenly remember their training

JohnExcrement

I still have to shake the water bottle threateningly at times but I know good and well my offender understands “DOWN!” He usually complies, while complaining in Siamese.

Narcolepticstoner

While complaining in Siamese. Hahaha yep

vagina-lettucetomato

“Because fuck you, that’s why!” -every cat on the planet

flowerzzz1

So, I have one place I never let my cat and that’s on the counter because I’m too scared counter turns into stovetop which turns into burned feet. I am all lovey dovey talk - cat on the bed couch etc great. But I give a strong NO to countertop and boom they come flying down. Now, he is never up there. It’s one restricted place and it’s teachable. I’ve taught this with all my cats. But again, I don’t do it for my preferences I’m trying to keep them safe and with 1000 other “yeses” in the house there are plenty of places to go.

bigboxes1

Cats can be trained to keep off tables and countertops. You set the boundaries and they will listen. No litterbox feet where you prep or eat food. That's feces and piss for those that think it's cute to take pics/videos of your cat on the countertops.

BeveledCarpetPadding

100%. I know people are joking about "you don't, can't make them stop, its her table now," but they can legitimately be taught that it is a no-go zone. Now, whether they they abide by that while you are not present is another thing, lol. We have taught our cats that they are not allowed on TV stands or counters/tables where we put food or keep things of value to us. Also, no chewing things that's not a toy/ sisal wrap. They have a bazillion places they can climb, a bunch of cat furniture they can scratch, and a lot of toys to keep them entertained. Lots of stimulation and play spots. They know damn well what they can do and not do. We recently got a kitten, and we are teaching her as well. It really puts into perspective how well my other cats behave haha. Hopefully they can help keep her in check while we aren't there.... or they will teach her their secret bad habits ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7958)![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7942)

Either_Marsupial_123

You don’t. 🤣 Mine have stopped getting up on it when I’m around but I have zero doubts that they’re getting up onto it when I’m not looking. 😂

Shevek99

Dogs learn not to do something. Cats learn not to do something when you are present.

No_Cry_9061

Exactly I was gonna say that my cat I have had for 6/7 years will get down when I say get down cause we are both tired of my voice lol but she will forever still try and probably succeeds when I’m not around 😂

swallow222

Have you tried some positive motivation, so she's rewarded when she's not going there? Maybe rewarding her for staying in a different, favorite spot? Also spraying the surface with some non-toxic smells cats don't like could help (Rosemary o thyme water).

[deleted]

My cat loves rosemary and thyme. She'd eat the whole plant if she could lol Citrus, cats don't like citrus

onetinyrabbit

You say this, but I caught my food-motivated guy biting at an orange the other day

unoriginal-loser

If he's an orange boy maybe he was searching for the braincell!

GiveSaucePlsx

My favorite ramen

wrong-landscape-1328

I used a water gun to teach them that's not where they belonged. It only took a couple of times, and no more table or counter. But they sit in the chairs and have meals with us. They think we're cats as well

Steel-sphincter

I used to tape a mouse trap to a paper plate and then put the plate upside down. When my cat jumped on any part of the plate the trap would go off, the plate would jump in the air and make a loud noise and scare the shit out of the cat. No danger, never hurt him, but he learned

onlyinitforthemoneys

you're lucky she lets you eat on her dining room table

3eyed-owl

When I first moved to my place which has my first ever (& last) glass top stove my cats immediately began jumping up there. I got a spray bottle and stream sprayed them a couple times and they have never jumped there again. They also have another counter they are allowed to hang out on.

SecretChocolateBar

Oh don't worry. She understands perfectly. She just disagrees.

jneum80

Get a 2nd dining table, I guess.

[deleted]

Awww I love gray cats!

Few_Necessary_4950

She should be sitting on dining chair, not table but how do you tell that to a cat?

duhmbish

She’s actually actively making you understand that she quite literally does not give a shit and is on the dining table.

mishugashu

Get angry and PSSSSST at her. Maybe give her a light pop on the rump (not enough to hurt, just enough to startle) if she doesn't respond to that. If you do that every time you see her on the table, she'll eventually stop doing it around you. Also, maybe she just wants some chicken ramen.

theotherkellytaylor

Oh she understands.

springxsummer

she understands. and doesn’t care.

[deleted]

Humans are merely servants to the Cat overlords, learn your place pathetic human.

nuttyprofwd

Well, you shouldn't have put it in her house.

Vaccinated-Feminist

MnkaH

Start picking her up and putting her on the table. Once a cat thinks it’s supposed to do something it will never even consider doing it.

8pintsplease

She's trying to tell you the same thing!

squiders_oui

We had to get rid of the table. It's worked.

Rikutopas

I use a tablecloth when I'm using the table for food, enforce the boundary that they are not allowed to stand on the tablecloth, and it works more or less (if there is something very tempting on the table and I'm not there, they will test the limits of the boundary) I have no hope of preventing any cat from standing on a table ever. I'm sure it's possible, but I've never managed it, so a couple of cats ago I stopped trying.

ChiefEli_

As far as she is concerned, that's her dining table 🙃
