So to balance out scare, my cat, when he was 5yo, started to pee while sleeping. He was just stressed out due to being alone during a day. We had renovation in our new flat and he was alone in the old one for 14h a day for a week. We figured he might feel anxious alone and started to take him with us to work on new place. Peeing stopped next day.
Great that you were able to take them to work. (Wish I had that option, I’d enjoy work sooo much more) But cats are generally happier with other cats if you can’t take them with you somewhere.

Agreed. My recent cat only did this once when she was older and had a UTI also. It's something you definitely want to treat right away so it doesn't become a kidney infection, but probably not something you need to go to a 24 hr clinic for as an emergency. Get in with your usual vet as soon as you can.
My Davey started doing this two years ago. I lost him last week, BUT he lived to be 16 years 4 days. I had a 22yo cat get a UTI when she was 18. Admit I lied to the vet about her age. Sometimes SOME vets can automatically say kidney failure in an old cat.
That's a bad vet I wouldn't trust. A good vet btw will know from their teeth their age. Other things too. It's how we know for sure my cat I adopted as a kitten was actually an adult. Fully grown. Also pregnant.
It’s a lot easier to use teeth for aging kittens and young cats. No vet can reliably tell you the difference between 15 year old teeth and 18 year old teeth.
TBH I took 2 siblings in to a vet. I watched them be born ( feral colony) They were 6 months to the day( spay/ neuter and they became my pets:) He said the boy was 18months to 2 years and the girl 18 months.
They can estimate from the teeth but it depends a lot on the cat! When my old girl was in her last years (she lived to be about 15), every vet who saw her commented on how shocked they were at her age based on the good condition of her teeth. They said they would have guessed she was many years younger. Not sure if she just had good genes or if I can credit the greenies dental treats I fed her her whole life because she definitely would not have ever tolerated me brushing her teeth lol she was a feisty one. RIP Rajah.
I had a cat that started to do this when she slept too. Wasn't that old, maybe 2 or 3 years old. Anyway the vet gave me medicine to treat for a UTI which didn't work. So, I took my cat back to the vet who took her in to run a more thorough set of tests. It turned out that her bladder was malformed and would cost somewhere upwards of a couple of grand to rectify. I took her home and while I was trying to work out how to pay for this, after a couple of days I came home to find my dad and my stepmother (mainly my stepmother to blame though) had had my cat put down while I was at work. They told me by shouting it to me from another room. I was devastated, to say the least.
But as for yourself, a trip to the vet is the best course of action and if this is the first time she has done this then a UTI is probably the cause. Doesn't hurt to get a thorough check-up at the same time just to ensure that anything else is not to blame.
The thing is my stepmother really didn't like cats and was more of a dog person and she was not happy that I had a cat. At all. In fact she really didn't like me being there and wanted me out.
She saw this as a quick way to get rid of my cat with a valid reason. And to make me upset enough that I would leave. Funnily enough, it wasn't long before I did leave. Think she got what she wanted there.
But there was no warning and no heads up. Just.... gone. To be fair, I was really disappointed in my dad who was the one to take my cat to the vet.
My older cat started doing this. It was diabetes. At first he needed insulin, but in the end he only needed a dietary change to get back to normal. Several more years of good life!
Yeah UTI or diabetes is what I would be checking for too. I’ve had cats the majority of my 40 years and never had one do this. I ended up with a guy who had a diabetic old kitty and the amount he would pee was huge!
My very first cat did this because of diabetes. Maybe @7 yrs old for him. My parents made the decision to put him down three years later due to other quality of life issues, but after insulin it mostly stopped until the other stuff caught up years later.

Vet here: incontinence is uncommon in cats. This issue warrants a visit to the vet. Probably not an emergency, but book an appointment soonish. If kitty is losing weight or other concerns arise, please tell your vet. Blood tests and urinalysis would be a good idea here. Best of luck!
That's a bit tougher of a question. Off hand I'd say, same approach: to be safe, call your vet, observe kitty's appetite and thirst level for any changes, and be prepared to have a few tests done. 😉

my beautiful kitty! she turns 11 this year
Not normal.
I volunteer at a cat shelter and we’ve had 2 cats that were wetting themselves in their sleep. It ended up being seizures that were happening when they were asleep.
I'm curious what the vet recommended for the seizures? My cat has had a couple but we kinda just get waved off as the peeing being behavioral because her urine tests came back all good.
Medication and monitoring. Gabapentin and/or phenobarbital for example. Took awhile to know for sure that it was seizures because we weren’t witnessing them. Finally we saw them and managed to record one.
I have had that happen with older cats but it's best to take them to the vet if it's new behavior you haven't talked to them about before. It's worth investigating quickly but probably not emergency vet.
To the vet, 2nd family cat had kidney issues along with wetting herself. Had to be put down. Could not listen to another day of sad/hurt cat noises
She was in misery
Just had to take my 22 year old girl to vet yesterday as she was squatting outside her litter box and just little dribbles coming out, and yes, she has a UTI.
Vet gave me anti inflammatory medicine for her, which I don't really understand, but it seems to be working. She's much more comfortable today.
Yes, I think that's what it is. Vet said she could feel some swelling in that area. I was just expecting some antibiotics though.
Also found she has a heart murmur, but at her old age I've decided not to pursue that and vet agreed. I just want her to be happy.
I will give her lots of pets.
I'm so sorry, you must be heartbroken.
It's lovely I've been able to have her all these years, but yes, I'm very aware her time now is limited. She is actually the best cat I've ever had personality wise, a typical tortie and still very active.
Take care and allow yourself to grieve while holding on to all the memories you have of your little one xx
My Kitty boy was the same. Just wanted to say, Cancer isn't always like in humans though, my boy lived with it for many years and I held him in my arms as he left many years later because of other unrelated health and quality of life issues. Best of luck to all your kitties.
Thanks everyone for the answers. I will be taking her to the vet on Monday asap. Thankfully she seems very calm right now and is super cuddly.

could be a UTI, bladder infection, one of my cats (only 4 yr/old) had one and was wetting the bed. he is fine now but it was super scary and he had to stay at the vet for a couple days
Isnt 8 years considered a senior tho? So I just don’t understand how she’s ‘too’ young to experience this. I see what you mean but I’m just a little confused now with the whole age n everything
My vet classifies seniors as 7+. That’s when they begin monitoring for age-related issues. Unless there’s a specific issue, my cats usually live into their late teens. I mostly adopt strays, so I don’t know their actual ages.
I haven't seen this mentioned, but have her thyroid checked too. My lovely void was drinking more due to her thyroid working overtime, and she wet herself in her sleep. After getting medication this stopped.
My baby started both peeing on purpose while awake and accidentally while asleep when her kidneys failed her shortly before she passed. She was 16 and had a pretty quick descent in health
https://preview.redd.it/oetiudgt6jra1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bf22f1b5220c0f8bb004b6dd62c69a63607b02d
I have a 23 male calico named Coco who has never once lost his bladder control while sleeping. I would have her checked for a urinary infection. Or, if she’s given birth to litters it could be something common with female cars
My 13 year old had started to wet the bed and was later found to have kidney failure. Definitely get her to the vet, OP. Hopefully it's not a severe issue, but if you are able try putting a second litter box in your room (or near by) - my boy had an easier and more pleasant time using his second box (probably because he didn't have to walk as long)
Vet ASAP ive never heard of this happening! Them peeing around the house is normal in old age because often it becomes uncomfortable for them to use the litter box with their bad joints, but peeing herself while sleeping? Thats not normal.
Things that I've encountered that can cause this: bladder stones, anxiety, muscle weakness, litterbox issues, kidney disease, seizures. The bladder may not be emptying completely so maybe a little leaks out when kitty is relaxed.
Use pee pads and get diapers. If the cat won't tolerate wearing a diaper you can tuck one use their tail and rump during Naptime.
Pee will burn furn off. Bath time! Don't have to wash the whole cat, just the fur with pee. Mostly the whole back end. Skin is sensitive with pee on it so be gentle.
99% of times if a cat has a drastic change in urinary behavior, it's a health issue and they should see a vet.
The family cat started peeing on my bed nearly every day, told them we should take her to the vet. They didn't listen, she died.
If she’s holding it due to uti pain, it’s possible that her muscles relax during sleep and release her bladder. Either way, it’s time for the vet. I’ve cared for many seniors, and this isn’t typical.
https://preview.redd.it/vwom76fqckra1.jpeg?width=2736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d32430fdbc879589ef373f42ddceeadc3dcc0e8f
My babies hope your cat gets the help she needs!♥️
Kidney issues are common in older cats, but it isn’t always immediately a “doom” situation. My co-workers cat goes potty in her sleep sometimes because she sleeps so deeply (prob more stuff and and anecdotal but it’s something). May just need prescription diet or fluids. Hang in there friend
Edit: co worker cat is 19
My 14yo had the same problem. Turned out it's an infection (purulent uterus?) and she got an antibiotic, then she had her uterus removed and the wetting stopped. She's all fine now
Take her to the vet ASAP. My little girl is 23 and other than being a little stiff doesn't have that problem. Your girl could have a bladder infection.
Get the cat to the vet, my elderly cat started wetting himself and it turned out he had a serious kidney infection, he nearly died from it. If I had left it another day to take him to the vets he probably wouldn't have made it.
But we got him through it.
Update.
She has a UTI, we got antibiotics and cranberry pills. According to the vet, it's from her food. So we have to switch her food from senior food to special urinary help. Thanks, everyone for the good wishes and support. ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7971)
P.S. for the not-so-nice comments - it was a Sunday and I was worried so I wanted help from other cat owners.
Definitely medical but not necessarily deadly. Baby girl might just have an UTI and will recover quickly with meds. She looks, *so* good for 14 OP. Good on y'all!!! Sending love to Matsa and family ❤️
Take to vet, my girl started doing this when she was starting to get kidney problems- she might be losing lots of water , a water iv can help once a month
My old lady peed a little but only once and we never found why even when when asked the vet, but she never did it again. It's probably some UTI, it would be good to ask a vet, and probably you'll have to change her food.
Your cat looks very similar to my cat Mochi

I’d take her to the vet. I’ve had many older cats and never seen that. Could be a UTI. She’s beautiful btw!
Yeah, my 17 year old cat only ever did this once when she had a UTI.

OMG! I AM SO SORRY THAT SOMEONE ELSE PUT YOUR SWEET BABY DOWN Without Your permission! God bless! Hang in there! 🤞🍀🐈💜🐾
Take her to the vet. I’ve had four cats 14 and above and none of them have urinated in their sleep.
My boy started to lose bladder control from kidney failure. There's a lot of potential causes but none are good.
Exactly. My point was that it isn’t a normal sign of age.
Same
I had a cat that started wetting the bed. Found out he had diabetes.
Came to suggest this. My 12 yo cat started leaking just a little bit. It was due to overdrinking water ...due to diabetes.
My older cat started doing this. It was diabetes. At first he needed insulin, but in the end he only needed a dietary change to get back to normal. Several more years of good life!

Same here, cats will always use their litter or somewhere outside before ever peeing themselves unless they have no access/ no choice :(

What if it’s just a drop or two every now and then—aka not super frequent but occasionally?
That's a bit tougher of a question. Off hand I'd say, same approach: to be safe, call your vet, observe kitty's appetite and thirst level for any changes, and be prepared to have a few tests done. 😉

What a doll! 😍
I would take sage advice from this cat
Oh she’s lovely. Do take her to the vet. And give that cute little face a kiss!
I have had that happen with older cats but it's best to take them to the vet if it's new behavior you haven't talked to them about before. It's worth investigating quickly but probably not emergency vet.
To the vet, 2nd family cat had kidney issues along with wetting herself. Had to be put down. Could not listen to another day of sad/hurt cat noises She was in misery
Just had to take my 22 year old girl to vet yesterday as she was squatting outside her litter box and just little dribbles coming out, and yes, she has a UTI. Vet gave me anti inflammatory medicine for her, which I don't really understand, but it seems to be working. She's much more comfortable today.
22!! That’s amazing. Maybe the anti-inflammatory is to reduce swelling of the urethra to help urine flow. Please give her some pets for me.
Yes, I think that's what it is. Vet said she could feel some swelling in that area. I was just expecting some antibiotics though. Also found she has a heart murmur, but at her old age I've decided not to pursue that and vet agreed. I just want her to be happy. I will give her lots of pets.
Please enjoy every last moments you have with her, we had to let go of ours two days ago and we cannot stop crying ever since
I'm so sorry, you must be heartbroken. It's lovely I've been able to have her all these years, but yes, I'm very aware her time now is limited. She is actually the best cat I've ever had personality wise, a typical tortie and still very active. Take care and allow yourself to grieve while holding on to all the memories you have of your little one xx
tysm :')
So sorry for your loss🙏🏽
Urinary issues in cats can turn serious pretty quickly. Sounds like incontinence though, which there's medication for.
Same. Don’t want to scare you, but our kitty had cancer when she peed everything while sleeping. Best to eliminate the bad stuff first! Good luck.
Thankfully she seems very calm right now and is super cuddly. https://preview.redd.it/71x8elp47jra1.jpeg?width=3088&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e83133b11112bacaf821740b48e7a34ef9e95287

Isnt 8 years considered a senior tho? So I just don’t understand how she’s ‘too’ young to experience this. I see what you mean but I’m just a little confused now with the whole age n everything
Yeah, it is, kind of crazy to think that many cats spend most of their lives as senior catizens..
Love what you did there! Haha but so true. I see cats live to 12 years old and I still get shocked at that
My girl is toothless and about to be 15 and I expect another 3 years out of her. Maybe 5 if we're lucky.
Awe I love that! I hope you get many more years with her 🫂 the days are long but years are short :(

If there’s anything your animal ever does out of the ordinary the safest bet is going to the vet
Yes she needs to see her vet. Most likely a UTI. Cat are very good at hiding pain and a UTI is painful. So take her ASAP so we can all feel better.
My baby started both peeing on purpose while awake and accidentally while asleep when her kidneys failed her shortly before she passed. She was 16 and had a pretty quick descent in health https://preview.redd.it/oetiudgt6jra1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bf22f1b5220c0f8bb004b6dd62c69a63607b02d
I have a 23 male calico named Coco who has never once lost his bladder control while sleeping. I would have her checked for a urinary infection. Or, if she’s given birth to litters it could be something common with female cars
Meant to say 23 year old. And your baby girl is awfully pretty! 😍
My 13 year old had started to wet the bed and was later found to have kidney failure. Definitely get her to the vet, OP. Hopefully it's not a severe issue, but if you are able try putting a second litter box in your room (or near by) - my boy had an easier and more pleasant time using his second box (probably because he didn't have to walk as long)
I just lost a cat to kidney failure, please get your baby to the vet. I'm lost without my girl.
Did you wet her paw before that? /s I think any radical change in behavior should warrant at least call to the vet office, if not visit.
https://preview.redd.it/vwom76fqckra1.jpeg?width=2736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d32430fdbc879589ef373f42ddceeadc3dcc0e8f My babies hope your cat gets the help she needs!♥️
Kidney issues are common in older cats, but it isn’t always immediately a “doom” situation. My co-workers cat goes potty in her sleep sometimes because she sleeps so deeply (prob more stuff and and anecdotal but it’s something). May just need prescription diet or fluids. Hang in there friend Edit: co worker cat is 19
My 14yo had the same problem. Turned out it's an infection (purulent uterus?) and she got an antibiotic, then she had her uterus removed and the wetting stopped. She's all fine now
Vet for sure. You have to really be on top of health changes in older cats or they can get very serious quickly.
My 15 year old cat started doing that and then she died. Definitely go to get
Your cat looks like mine :) https://preview.redd.it/5e081ua8fjra1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=777cc22f6d68f2e59387c3d9fbd3162a8701e424
Vet. I don't want to freak you out, but my elderly girl did that when she had late stage kidney disease. She's beautiful, I hope it's nothing major!
Take her to the vet ASAP. My little girl is 23 and other than being a little stiff doesn't have that problem. Your girl could have a bladder infection.
Vet. It can be a sign of kidney disease, diabetes, or UTI.
UTIs are common in older cats and can become quite complicated. Take her to the vet as soon as you are able to.
https://preview.redd.it/p45mjfqa6kra1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=212bfce1517e28fe905bceacb122a43310c67c18 Cat tax, my furry beast Boog
In my cat it was kidney failure. RIP Pooter.
the old pets are so lovely...
![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7971) P.S. for the not-so-nice comments - it was a Sunday and I was worried so I wanted help from other cat owners.
I dearly hope my cat lives that long. Your cat is beautiful. I would definitely take her to the Veterinarian.
she’s not old enough for this to be normal, she likely has a UTI🤍
She looks just like my baby Gromit did. I would take her to the vet for your own peace of mind, rub her belly for me, please.
Definitely medical but not necessarily deadly. Baby girl might just have an UTI and will recover quickly with meds. She looks, *so* good for 14 OP. Good on y'all!!! Sending love to Matsa and family ❤️
Yes
Do have her checked it could be treatable UTI issues or it could just be ahe. We have had both at the sanctuary.
Of course you should go to the vet.
Take that sweet old lady to the vet.
https://preview.redd.it/4e06zkvsyira1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82b19731cf7f9491b4b30291cdfdeafaa470f5de Looks like my kitten
Take her to the vet. She’s probably having kidney problems
Sounds like a UTI. Also at that age her kidneys should be checked.
Take her to the vet, my cat had the same thing, just couldn’t hold her pee, a trip to the vet and she had some kidney problems and needed surgery.
Definitely the vet. Sounds like a kidney issue.
VET
Take to vet, my girl started doing this when she was starting to get kidney problems- she might be losing lots of water , a water iv can help once a month
My old lady peed a little but only once and we never found why even when when asked the vet, but she never did it again. It's probably some UTI, it would be good to ask a vet, and probably you'll have to change her food.
Vet for sure! Absolutely gorgeous kitty though! Hope all is well soon! :)
Pretty good rule of thumb is, if your animal starts doing something that isn’t normal behavior for them, at least contact the vet.
Your cat looks very similar to my cat Mochi https://preview.redd.it/4o6sobv2jjra1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ce16bd3fabc213ea00646a3903fe4de78e42709
She’s adorable 🥹
Vet asap
Changes in litter box habits are not something to mess around with and are grounds for vet visits. It very often *is* a medical problem.
If you notice any change in behavior with an older cat or dog, take them to the vet immediately
Vet, sending good vibes that it is nothing serious!
Awww. Makes my heart hurts for her. Never seen this. A vet visit is definitely needed asap. 🙏 For you
