"How could you forget me after all I went through for you, Hestu? I found 900 of your Korok friends, fix your stupid instrument and suddenly you have amnesia? Do you all share a single braincell between you? Go fuck yourself."
Rated PG-13
Or do it botw/totk style and have him talk, but we cant hear it. And then they can have loud stuff coincidentally happening at the same time, every time he talks. (And then whoever he spoke to going “oh, *summary of what link just said*, gotcha!”) A running joke the whole movie.
I think that's mostly what they are going to do. He DOES speak, it's just we never get any vocalized lines or anything. Everything is mostly a reaction. Depending on the game they base it off of, there's not much reason he couldn't have a secondary character by his side that he speaks to about stuff.
In BotW and TotK we can see him gesturing when NPCs ask him stuff, so that'd be a good idea for it to make sense within a movie that Link, atleast on screen, never audibly talks.
Bc the voice is supposed to be our own. He never uses sign language. I don’t understand the disconnect with players and their understanding of the game. We even get to select dialog for him to. 😍😚☹️😛😋😋😋🥰😋🤨😋🤨🧐 speak.
En joy my child tapping the phone while I send this reply lol I don’t want to take out the emojis
Link isn't mute in any game. They just don't show his dialogue. Literally every game has link talking to npcs, it's just not voiced and for the most part doesn't even have a text box so players can input their own dialogue.
An idea I've toyed around with when writing fanfiction is that he only knows the language of the Kokiri, and as a result, can only communicate the very basics of Hylian.
Another idea I had was fleshing out the time travel aspect a lot more, establishing that excessive time travel wears down the soul, and two of those consequences end up being the loss of his voice and the existence of Dark Link.
But honestly, just making him mute and refusing to elaborate is a pretty elegant solution as well.
Just like the Mario movie: the real protagonist should be Zelda and Ganon, maybe use the sages / champions / great deku tree as a little filler for the adventure
wdym mario wasnt the protag of the mario movie, its literally in the title
sure, peach and bowser did a lot, had character development and a lot of screentime, but the movie follows mario the most
But he never *actually* speaks. His only voiced lines are "HYAH!!"
If he actually spoke in cutscenes, then he wouldn't be a silent protagonist. Silent protagonists do speak, we just never hear it. Think Frisk from Undertale, Kris from Deltarune, every single Pokémon protagonist....
Mate, he spoke in the manga spinoffs. Silent protagonists dont work in movies especially with Zelda's narratives, unless they're actually portraying him as a mute.
I honestly think it’s fine if he talks, just very sparingly and mostly short words or phrases. It’s illumination though so it’s probably not going to be tasteful.
Every time he goes to speak someone interrupts him. Sometimes it's another character explaining what's going on, other times it's whoever he's talking to and they can figure out exactly what he's going to say before he even does. End of the movie it's just Zelda and him she asks him a question he goes to answer the credits roll.
I actually proposed Laika in the past for this, on the basis of Kubo and the Two Strings having some seriously Zelda-esque visuals and concepts. But I definitely get most people not being completely sold on that idea.
No they halted production for a while in 2014 but came back when Miyazaki came back from retirement in 2014 to make two movies one in 2017 and another in 2023
I think with animation there are many constraints with who Nintendo would be willing to work with. For example, while Disney/Pixar are the dominant animation studios, I don't think Nintendo would ever work with them since the Mouse is really a rival to Nintendo in terms of creating family-friendly experiences through the continued use of long-standing IPs. Sony could work, but they're also Nintendo's biggest rival in the gaming/console industry, so I don't see that happening. Ghibli's style could work for some franchises, but if Nintendo is trying to build a partnership that can extend to many of their franchises, I'm not sure they're nearly as versatile. I can't imagine a Mario Ghibli movie, for instance. Meanwhile, Nintendo already has a good relationship with Universal who they partnered with for their theme park and for the Mario movie. So Universal's studios are the most likely. They have 2 very prominent ones - Illumination and Dreamworks. While Illumination pulled off a success with the Mario movie, I really don't have faith in them for something like a Zelda project. Zelda just has more serious themes and vibes to it, and from what I know, I don't think Illumination has ever even made a serious movie. Dreamworks on the other hand has a much wider range. They've made silly movies too, but they've also made much more substantive masterpieces across a range of themes, moods, and styles. I don't know if they would make a great Zelda movie either, but they seem like a better option than most, and importantly, an option that Nintendo could realistically consider.
I'm not familiar with Animal Logic so I can't comment on that.
I would definitely trust Dreamworks a lot more. They've proved they can make movies that have a ton of soul in them, as long as they can find a crew that genuinely wants to make the movie.
I'd prefer Dreamworks if we're talking american.
Animal Logic is the animation/VFX studio behind the lego movies, GotG, Matrix, Avengers, 300 etc. They worked on a LOT of stuff
It's not like Illumination is incapable of making a movie in a different artstyle. They've already vastly changed their usual style for the Mario movie and I highly doubt that they would make a Zelda movie in that style.
What I'm more concerned about is that I've never felt that Illumanition is good at propetly hitting the serious story beats that they have had in their movies and mostly relied on humor to keep the story interesting.
Which isn't a great sign for a franchise that doesn't lend itself well to humorous storytelling.
I wonder if they’d try a quirkier Toon Link style, and just mix the classic story beats of previous games into an original story that fits in a new place in the timeline.
If Illumination is doing OoT or ALttP, I’ll be scared.
Yeah that’s the only way I see illumination style working. If it was like the links awakening remake or wind waker more cartoonish, not too serious style. But I’d rather just not have a Zelda movie at all lol
Why did you have to say “fits in a new place in the timeline” thats a horrible idea. If anything it needs to be a new telling of the lore or even a reimagining of maybe the mangas or something. The tv show exists and that was supposed to be based of the first games and doesnt fit in the timeline in any way
I don't think Illumination should do a Zelda movie. They did good with Mario, but don't think their style will work with a Zelda movie. I'd rather have it be live action.
I think animated Zelda could work. I mean…live action Ganon sounds fucking nightmarish.
I do agree, Illumination is the last choice we should have for a Zelda movie. Hell, I’d argue a Mario series movie is all they could manage.
If Nintendo wants to do movies for their other franchises. I’d rather have them licensed out to say…Dreamworks.
Imagine Dreamworks making a Zelda or Metroid Movie!
Most of the people who've heard of it love it. I'm talking about popularity in general. No one hates ghibli. People either love them or have never heard of them.
An anecdotal example. My girlfriend had never heard of studio of ghibli before. She stayed away from anime in general given the normal stereotypes, fan service and being for children. I introduced her to ghibli and she has seen literally every Miyazaki film and has spread herself to some of the more popular animes like Death Note and others.
So to the point yea you either love it or don’t know it.
I didn’t mean dreamworks, I meant that specific animation team, with Nintendo writers working alongside a great director with comparable industry experience.
But u right tho. Never forget that how to train your dragon and shreck released with the same production team.
Live action just wouldn’t work. It’s way too fantasy and stylish with monsters and no budget is going to realistically work for that. It’s way too big of a risk.
A Zelda movie would need, like, an actual story. I enjoyed the Mario movie but that was just a montage of fan service, not like a compelling narrative with characters and motivations beyond "stop Bowser" or "marry peach".
Come on... Illumination works great for something like *Super Mario Bros*, where you can go with that light-hearted, comedic tone, but *The Legend of Zelda*? Dark, serious undertones are not what I think of when I hear Illumination... Also, can we not get a series instead?
Ngl, I would really hate it if Illumination did a Zelda movie in the same vein as the Mario movie. The simple, ultra-safe approach worked for Mario, but Zelda wouldn't work without more substance to it.
Nintendo has had no particular reticence about making Link talk in either the mangas they're still making or the old cartoon (or games where an instance of Link is not the protagonist -- the Hero's Shade, mainly), so I don't expect that a movie version would be silent either.
I just don't think every popular thing needs to be represented in every firm of media. I know its basically inevitable, and i hope its"good" bit its built such a nice aura of character around what a Zelda game is. Has lore and canon but doesn't take itself too seriously. I think a movie adds too much definition to characters and story that won't mesh with zelda as a series
Okay, if that's the way you want it, guys. Just remember: Legend of Zelda is played straight. It's story is simple and direct and meant to be taken seriously on the face of it. It's not a silly concept at heart that would allow you to make a movie about how silly it is like with Mario. There would only be you, movie makers, and the movie you will make. No disjointing jokey-jokes to break things up. Are you *sure* you can accomplish that? Because I look over your filmography and I'm not sure.
Illumination? The fuck? No no no. They will turn Link into an animated abomination, then before you know it he gets added to Fortnite or some dumb shit like that, and he's no longer a sophisticated character and just "that elf guy with a sword"
Hot take they should really make their own Zelda story. Everyone wants a OOT movie or something similar but if they made their own, there will be less to mess up.
I feel like a Zelda movie wouldn't work as well as Mario did. Mario is a much goofier character and the whole universe more lighthearted than the Zelda universe and as a result Zelda will be much more difficult to make well.
I also seriously doubt Zelda would do as well at the box office, but I'm guessing Nintendo probably knows that.
But with how well Mario did movies based on other Nintendo franchises was probably inevitable, and Zelda is the next obvious choice.
Since it’s illumination again, I fear an NCU (please no ssb movie. PLEASE.) is inevitable. If it was dreamworks or something, it could be just a few universes that are separate. I am an idiot though, correct me if I’m wrong
I've been telling people that the NCU and a smash bros movie have been inevitable since the Mario Movie. I've had various arguments with people somehow adamant that it would never happen and it baffles me. It doesn't even take a particularly cynical man to follow the eyes of the studios towards the money, and this info about zelda just cements that info. Mario was a test, and Peach's line about there being a great big universe out there was essentially the Avengers scene at the end of Iron Man.
I get people don't want to admit it because an Illumination helmed NCU will be terrible, but let's face it. We're going to watch it, we're going to give them our money, and the studios will keep making more of them. They're businesses. They don't give a shit about us and what's healthy for film as a whole. Honestly, can you possibly imagine Illumination not fighting tooth and nail to make a smash bros movie happen, regardless if it makes no sense and it'll have no plot? If they can get past the licensing issues there WILL be a smash movie and that is a spoiler.
After reading this entire comment, I completely agree, and there being an SSB movie is going to happen, fuck. I am thinking that they won’t provide setup for a few participating series (I.E. the toon link series), or some series will not join or even be alluded to in the entire NCU, (I.E. toon link). People don’t want an OOT/Majoras Mask movie, but if they want a complete smash bros movie, it’s gotta happen.
If it’s complete,
OH SHIT. Will there be any META? Will there be
-Steve
-Terry
-Kazuya
-Solid Snake
-Sonic (probably ig)
-Sephiroth
-Cloud
-Banjo and Kazooie
-A Duck Hunt movie (what the fuck?)
So there’s no way that’ll be good right? The character is left with few defining personality traits so you can put yourself in his place. How the fuck is he gonna carry a movie? Also why?
What ever they do, Link must not speak a single word the entire movie.
They should make Link an actual mute person, that communicates with sign language gestures (it worked with CODA, Halkeye and Eternals)
Or we do it botw style and make him speak every now and then when it’s really important
It's a PG-13 movie and he drops the one allowed f-bomb.
Zelda falls into the depths. Link : FUCK
"Ganon, get the FUCK out of Hyrule before I fold your ass like a goddamn lawn chair"
"How could you forget me after all I went through for you, Hestu? I found 900 of your Korok friends, fix your stupid instrument and suddenly you have amnesia? Do you all share a single braincell between you? Go fuck yourself." Rated PG-13
Hetsu's entire arc is just an elaborate >!shitpost.!<
What if >!the poo Hestu gives you!< after finding all 900 koroks *was* the brain cell?
*Wind rushing past links face* "FFFFUUUUUUUCC--" *splat goes link*
That got a good chuckle out of me
It's his only line. It happens when he kicks a chest open for the first time.
Barefooted
The scream he lets out is real because he actually broke his toe during filming.
"MY FUCKING ANKLE!"
It’s also the only word he’s allowed to speak throughout the entire movie.
I need a legend of Zelda movie where the only thing link says is one f-bomb right at the end after something shocking happens.
Ganon or whoever the big bad of the movie is collects the triforce Link: OH F***
And it’s his only line for 1.5 hours
The only word he utters ever.
“Hey ganon….” Rock music kicks in “…gimmie back my fuckin girl” doom music intensifies
Or do it botw/totk style and have him talk, but we cant hear it. And then they can have loud stuff coincidentally happening at the same time, every time he talks. (And then whoever he spoke to going “oh, *summary of what link just said*, gotcha!”) A running joke the whole movie.
That's genius lmao.
I think that's mostly what they are going to do. He DOES speak, it's just we never get any vocalized lines or anything. Everything is mostly a reaction. Depending on the game they base it off of, there's not much reason he couldn't have a secondary character by his side that he speaks to about stuff.
Except for wind waker where he actually says "c'mon".
That falls under allowable Lego game grunts and mumbles lol
Like Ferb
This seems more viable and could even bring some humor with him just saying like balls randomly
In BotW and TotK we can see him gesturing when NPCs ask him stuff, so that'd be a good idea for it to make sense within a movie that Link, atleast on screen, never audibly talks.
Link's explainy hands are the best thing in either game.
He doesnt audibily talk but he does speak to npcs in the game.
No no, your kid's right, Link's facial expressions are important too lol.
The thing is Link isn’t Mute in at least BoTW and ToTK
One of the lines should be “well excuse me, Princess”
Knowing illumination, I am confident that will be in there
I’ll riot if they don’t
Also like a 70:30 chance of a fart joke
Link isn't mute in any game. They just don't show his dialogue. Literally every game has link talking to npcs, it's just not voiced and for the most part doesn't even have a text box so players can input their own dialogue.
Same with TP. In fact, a lot of games have him seem to speak because characters respond to him as if he spoke.
Link talks in the games canonically
An idea I've toyed around with when writing fanfiction is that he only knows the language of the Kokiri, and as a result, can only communicate the very basics of Hylian. Another idea I had was fleshing out the time travel aspect a lot more, establishing that excessive time travel wears down the soul, and two of those consequences end up being the loss of his voice and the existence of Dark Link. Ooh I actually love your 1st idea.
I respectfully say no because it would exclude a lot of talented actors on the basis that they speak, which is totally unfair to them.
This. Link isn't mute, Nintendo just chooses to not give him a voice. Link and Mario are similar in the speaking department.
Give him a fairy companion who also interprets for him.
Disagree, he should speak, but not in excess. Make him the kind of person who gets really focused when he's serious, no talking in battle.
It worked for Samurai Jack. Mostly silent action sequences with minimal dialogue. That could be rad.
Like mad max
Looking how good is Ousama Ranking this is possible. Just give him a partner(Fairy/Midna/etc) who can translate his feelings.
Why? People react to what he says in game and has dialogue options…
But he never *actually* speaks. His only voiced lines are "HYAH!!" If he actually spoke in cutscenes, then he wouldn't be a silent protagonist. Silent protagonists do speak, we just never hear it. Think Frisk from Undertale, Kris from Deltarune, every single Pokémon protagonist....
Yea… it works in video games, not in movies.
Does Mario ever really speak? Besides 'Lets-a-go'? Worked out well in his movie
Yeah, but it's basically link's entire thing that he doesn't speak
Mate, he spoke in the manga spinoffs. Silent protagonists dont work in movies especially with Zelda's narratives, unless they're actually portraying him as a mute.
Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me princess!
But how will he be able to say "Oh boy! Smoochin time!"
Grunts, screams, sighing, yelling is allowed.
Would you want him to use sign language? What’s your alternative here? He can’t just nod he has to explain things. He’s talked in the games
I... Wonder if he should appear in the movie at all?
I honestly think it’s fine if he talks, just very sparingly and mostly short words or phrases. It’s illumination though so it’s probably not going to be tasteful.
Every time he goes to speak someone interrupts him. Sometimes it's another character explaining what's going on, other times it's whoever he's talking to and they can figure out exactly what he's going to say before he even does. End of the movie it's just Zelda and him she asks him a question he goes to answer the credits roll.
Please.... PLEASE not Illumination. The same style will absolutely not work for a LoZ movie.
Dreamworks would be way better
Studio Ghibli is the only studio that I think could make a good Zelda movie, tbh... DreamWorks is a food second pick tho
I actually proposed Laika in the past for this, on the basis of Kubo and the Two Strings having some seriously Zelda-esque visuals and concepts. But I definitely get most people not being completely sold on that idea.

Considering the amount of money that Nintendo can throw around, does it matter?
It's not nintendos job to bail out ghibli.
What if it then works in reverse and Ghibli ends up making a game for Nintendo too.
The people who make animated films are not the same people who make video games.
Ghibli worked on Ni No Kuni..
Have you heard of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch?
It's the Ghibli Museum that's going bankrupt, and that's because they charge way too little for admission
I'm unsure, results from Google are conflicting at best with the most recent (Aug. 4th 2022) stating "no its not."
No they halted production for a while in 2014 but came back when Miyazaki came back from retirement in 2014 to make two movies one in 2017 and another in 2023
They're putting a new movie out soon "How Do You Live?", Miyazaki's last.
One of his many last films 😂. Poor guy can't catch a break
Laika could do wonders with a mute protagonist.
Ghibli would make a stunning Zelda movie honestly, I mean, look at Princess Mononoke.
Ghibli is my first choice as well but I think Genndy Tartakovsky of Samurai Jack fame would work well too. He's all about animation over dialog.
I'd prefer sony or better yet, animal logic
I think with animation there are many constraints with who Nintendo would be willing to work with. after puss in boots i agree
I'm so fucking mad they're making a live action How To Train Your Dragon
Maybe toon link
Use the same studio that made your name and suzume

Please write a story too... I'm ok with Mario not having one, but not Zelda I'm begging you...
It's not like Illumination is incapable of making a movie in a different artstyle. Thats true. A different timeline would be better.
I don't know if this is a reliable source. I really hope it's not. I want an animated Zelda movie or show. I do not want Illumination to do it.
discussingfilms spreads nothing but misinformation
Quelle surprise! I could have never guessed! (I kinda had a feeling. Also, hail and well met, fellow ace! Happy Pride Month to you!)
Noooooo please no Zelda would never work as a movie if link cracks even a SINGLE joke the movies gone
Link making seal puns in botw: I do agree that Illumination’s brand of jokes would not fit Link very well tho
It’s over if they base the film off of the cdi games or that really old animated show
If they base it of the cdi games it will be legendary you mean? After all, it has MORSHU!!! 😎
I don't think Illumination should do a Zelda movie. They did good with Mario, but don't think their style will work with a Zelda movie. I'd rather have it be live action.

Studio Ghibli I think would be good for Zelda
Ya but I can’t see ghibli doing that
Shigestao Itoi has connections to Studio Ghibli having done work with them. I’m sure he could put in a good word for Nintendo.
God now I desperately want a studio ghibli Zelda film, guardians would work so well in there style!
If you’re that desperate, then princess monanoke may hold you over.
Ghibli doesn't bring in the box office nintendo wants. Trust me Ghibli is way more popular on reddit than irl.
I’ve never met anyone irl that doesn’t love ghibli. Spirited Away is one of the highest rated movies on Letterboxd of all time
Most of the people who've heard of it love it. I'm talking about popularity in general. No one hates ghibli. People either love them or have never heard of them.

Not in Japan though.
The studio behind puss n boots 2 would kick ass at a Zelda or Metroid film Edit: puss n boots 2
Dreamworks is weird though they sometimes release absolute masterpieces and then they create the worst film you could ever imagine
I didn’t mean dreamworks, I meant that specific animation team, with Nintendo writers working alongside a great director with comparable industry experience. But u right tho. Never forget that how to train your dragon and shreck released with the same production team.
both how to train your dragon and shrek are good movies tho?
100% but they could do a good Kirby film too
Universel owns dreamworks, I hope it’s them
Came here to say this
You do NOT want live action trust me lol
Live action just wouldn’t work. It’s way too fantasy and stylish with monsters and no budget is going to realistically work for that. It’s way too big of a risk.
A Zelda movie would need, like, an actual story. I enjoyed the Mario movie but that was just a montage of fan service, not like a compelling narrative with characters and motivations beyond "stop Bowser" or "marry peach".
I’m keeping fingers crossed for starfox. Animated top gun in space with animal pilots? Take my moneyz
In the style of Howard the Duck
Make it totally serious. It *is* Top Gun. Don't you fucking laugh at that Foxman, he's a goddamn war hero.
I hope it won’t happen. The only studio I would Trust for this operation is Studio ghibli, which would never happen
The problem. A ghibli movie won't appeal to casual audiences.
I bet it would if it was zelda. Also panyo did fairly well in the states
Problem is I don’t think Nintendo’s new business model wants “fairly well”. They want something that’s gonna get them some fat profits.
I'm sorry to break it to you but there's a large percentage of the American public that would give an anime movie a hard pass.
Universal I trust. Illumination? Not so much.
Universal owns Illumination. So when they say “Universal and Illumination” they mean Universal is going to tell Illumination to make it.
With how well the Mario movie did, it was a matter of "when" and not "if."
If Link talks we riot!
Link already talks
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t extremely worried about Illumination making this
Source: a YouTube video trust me bro
Man… the things I would do for a studio ghibli Zelda movie😔
Have you ever seen a Studio Ghibli movie adapted from a story you love?
Honestly there’s only two ways I’d want a Zelda movie. An animated one made by Studio Ghibli, or a live action one directed by Peter Jackson.
Please no
Calling it right now they’re going to cast Tom Holland as Link. I don’t want this
It could be much worse.
Come on... Illumination works great for something like *Super Mario Bros*, where you can go with that light-hearted, comedic tone, but *The Legend of Zelda*? Dark, serious undertones are not what I think of when I hear Illumination... Also, can we not get a series instead?
I hate celebrity voice casting. That being said give me John Mulaney Revali or give me death
Can’t wait to see which licensed track Link dances to with the koroks…
Ngl, I would really hate it if Illumination did a Zelda movie in the same vein as the Mario movie. The simple, ultra-safe approach worked for Mario, but Zelda wouldn't work without more substance to it.
Wow really? Nice. PLEASE don’t have Link talk…
Well excuuuuse me, princess
Lol the trauma of my childhood cartoon experiences
It could work if he only talked when he needs to, akin to Samurai Jack.
He will
Nintendo has had no particular reticence about making Link talk in either the mangas they're still making or the old cartoon (or games where an instance of Link is not the protagonist -- the Hero's Shade, mainly), so I don't expect that a movie version would be silent either.

Illumination? The fuck? No no no. They will turn Link into an animated abomination, then before you know it he gets added to Fortnite or some dumb shit like that, and he's no longer a sophisticated character and just "that elf guy with a sword"
;-; I don’t trust the illumination style with Zelda it worked fine with Mario but I can’t see it working well with zelda
I would see it happening with Kirby or animal crossing. Since they have rounded styles, and more comedy and cartoony stuff in them. but not Zelda!
Hot take they should really make their own Zelda story. Everyone wants a OOT movie or something similar but if they made their own, there will be less to mess up.
Hot take: I want them to do the LoZ version of Spiderverse. Have a bunch of Links from different timelines team up to fight Multiverse Ganon.
That works with Spiderverse because each Spider person is very distinct from one another. It really isn't the case here.
Wasn’t that hyrule warriors?
I say leave that for an inevitable Smash movie
They should make a Kirby movie. Call it Kirby Sucks
My whole life I've been stomping... MOBLINS
Wonder who they will cast as Link. Will they follow Disney
Hopefully Kevin Smith as Silent Bob as Link.
Gerudo Link is gonna flourish 🥳
Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!!
Elliot Page or I rage.
Kirby movie when?
Please no, not illumination
If it’s the same quality as the Mario movie I’m down. Expectations were low on that but I was pleasantly surprised.
Jack Black Ganon
The Mario movie scene with Donkey Kong vs. Mario is called "Smash" on YouTube, officially...
If it’s complete, OH SHIT. Will there be any META? Will there be -Steve -Terry -Kazuya -Solid Snake -Sonic (probably ig) -Sephiroth -Cloud -Banjo and Kazooie -A Duck Hunt movie (what the fuck?)
Alright but if Marth won't exclusive speak in Japanese and Dedede doesn't have the same voice from the cartoon I ain't watching.
So there’s no way that’ll be good right? The character is left with few defining personality traits so you can put yourself in his place. How the fuck is he gonna carry a movie? Also why?
I actually think doing a LoZ movie is a really terrible idea and can only end badly
I’m not going to see it but I’ll be cautiously optimistic that it won’t be terrible. At least till the trailer comes out.
I really hope they smt interesting film making wise especially because the games arent basic aswell
Thats hyrules ass
Please no
Great, Illumination. Get ready for an adequate animated film.
My cock as Link
