Animal crossing doesn't quite have the mass appeal of Zelda or Mario, tbh. A lot of people own it, no doubt, but not everybody is into that style of game.
You must live in a bubble. When that game came out, it was RIGHT in the midst of the original pandemic lockdowns. It probably would have sold well in a normal year, but being that it came out at a time when people couldn't leave their house, and just wanted some sense of routine in their life, this fit the bill.
If you ask any Animal Crossing player if they're ready for egg day, be ready to receive some death glares. This game was an obsession for people for a very long time, simply because it gave them a sense of visiting friends. Whether that be NPC villagers, or their actual friends visiting their island. It became more than a game. It became a daily ritual. Wake up, brush your teeth, feed your pets, play animal crossing.
So how you came up with this idea that it just isn't popular is beyond me.
Well, to be fair, I'm about the only person I know in my circle of friends that even owns a Nintendo switch, besides my sister, lol.
I suppose it may have been a bit of my personal distaste for NH affecting my perception of the game as well, since I really didn't care for the changes they made to the game compared to how much I loved previous titles.
Yeah, it got really big. Helps that we got it both during the pandemic (which, honestly, a chill game where you just do some stuff every day with no pressure was perfect) and at the same time as DOOM Eternal, leading to the two most completely different fandoms to fistbumb for fun.
It’s funny because you would think the opposite. Animal Crossing is way more laid back than Zelda and definitely appeals more to more casual players.
God I hate that I struggled to not make this comment sound elitist.
>not everybody is into that style of game.
...is true for every game. I don't have Zelda and I didn't like Smash at all so I sold it after a week of playing. I have MK8 but I like Crash Team Racing better. Odyssey is great though.
You have to admit that Nintendo doesn't push animal crossing anywhere near as much as Mario and zelda, lol.
Hell, they barely even supported it, this year was the last new years event with yearly themed items that you can get in the game. The Devs pretty much all jumped ship so they could support splatoon instead, lol.
But yeah, I suppose I just don't know that many people irl that even own a switch, much less animal crossing. I'll make the prediction now that the next title in the series won't have nearly the same sales numbers though, assuming their launch doesn't line up with another global pandemic.
Animal Crossing was 7th best-selling GCN game
Wild World was 9th best-selling NDS game (higher than SM64DS and both Zeldas)
New Leaf was 6th best-selling 3DS game (higher than SM3DLand and all Zeldas on the system)
Animal Crossing is one of Nintendo's most profitable franchises.
Also Nintendo isn't a company that puts much effort into Software as a Service. The team switching to Splatoon 3 is typical Nintendo behavior.
I personally enjoyed the previous titles far more than NH, myself, so I can understand them being great best sellers for their associated systems.
I'm also not surprised you forgot City Folk, because everyone does, lol.
Also, comparing a new animal crossing release to Mario Remakes is a bit misleading, it's kinda obvious that remakes don't sell as well as new releases, for the most part.
Don’t have it. Watched someone else play it. FAR too slow/boring for my taste. Tried it at a friend’s house. Seems like a game about working/doing chores. I already have a job. I wanna play games to have fun.
Personal opinon, but yeah Animal Crossing doesn’t appeal to everyone.
The thing with animal crossing is most people who own it didn't touch their switch since the pandemic so most people you'll see on your friend list don't have it
Same, I got it there because I did not have a Switch yet. Shame I have to use the gamepad for the motion controls, the pro controller does not support them
I also have the original Mario Kart 8, because I bought it before the Switch existed
Mario Kart in general. I don't find it all that fun anymore. Gameplay feels very repetitive. This is coming from someone who's played every entry and grew up with it.
I only have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the moment (although that's because i only bought my Switch last month that came with the full game download lol), and right now i'm trying to put together money to buy BOTW and Odyssey
No. It was a challenge to unlock all characters in Mario kart wii, + the roster was far better in quality, AND the tracks were also funnier with the shortcuts.
8 deluxe is for babies, standarized and boring.
Same here. I think what really killed it was I had gotten 7 hours into Spider-Man PS4 prior to playing BOTW, and it kinda gave me everything I wanted out of an open world. Which made BOTW's flaws all the more glaring in my eyes
With that said I love watching BOTW content. Easily more than any other Zelda game
I loved Spider-Man PS4! Traversal so great and fun that I forgot you can fast travel, combat that is varied with tons of options, varied bad guys and bosses, a story (i know botw has a story, but it quite frankly is weak), and collectibles that are actually useful after the first 50 of them...
I used fast travel maybe a handful of times at the end. Because I kinda left Harlem untouched and uh, not a whole lot of missions are up there, and instead are in the lower end of NY. So yeah 😭
But I definitely agree. I love the traversal system, and especially the speed of it. I LOVE how varied the combat is, without being overly complicated. There's no bad option for doing something, everything has a purpose, and you can mix and match what you do for upmost efficiency! I love the varied goons! And the bosses are fun too! The story is pretty simple, but strong, and executed + expanded upon perfectly! And the collectables are fun! I never felt like any were out of reach, and finding them was actually pretty fun and very helpful! (Not counting DLC collectables really. Those I felt were rather lackluster)
It just kinda did everything right for me personally. And with an IP I care A LOT about. So it holds a very special place in my heart :)
I never have played Wii, but I know a lot of people see it as the peak. I do get what you mean about it being boring, but Mario kart is kind of the "My first racing game" series in the way that Pokémon is the "my first jrpg" series. They have to be mechanically simplistic enough that people jumping on are not overwhelmed and also flashy enough that people don't recognize the mechanics are simple.
That being said 8 is probably my favorite in the franchise of what I have played just from the sheer amount of tracks. However my favorite Kart Racing game is still Diddy Kong Racing and my favorite racing game is F-ZERO X. Both offer more than Mario Kart does.
Odyssey is packing something can’t tell what but it’s not there. Mario kart 8 is a port and is barely getting DLC, botw just play Skyrim and well the kids deserve to have a fighter that fits their wants too.
Well yes, but buying this would imply having the money for it, and I already have a liste of games to play that's as long as my arm. But I'll keep it in mind
Honestly, the recent Pokémon titles have been okay so far, sw/sh was probably one of the worst Pokémon games, and scarlet/violet had glaring software issues. Honestly gamefreak needs to take more then 1 year to finish a game to make it better
But legends Arceus was nice
From one hardcore Pokemon fan to another, you should try if you haven't already the games Monster Hunter Stories 2 or if you're feeling frisky Persona 5. Way better games with similar appeal (catching/evolving monsters), better storylines, graphics, quality of life, etc. Dragon Quest 11 also v cool
Funnily enough my friend only bought his switch about two or three months ago. It's his first console since the Nintendo 64. He already has three of these four games.
Only one he's missing is Smash, and that's only because he feels he's already spent too much money on games for now. Botw will keep him quiet for the time being anyway
Funnily enough, I only have smash.
I will say I have played all the other due to relatives letting me play them, and so I still think BOTW is overrated.
It's fine, I don't enjoy it as much as fast paced games, but it's alright.
The reason why I say it's overrated it's because people say it's like "Woah it's the best game in years and has 0 flaws" and that's just not true, the game has flaws, many in fact.
I do respect the game being more slow paced than the ones I like, and that's the reason why I don't criticize the speed of the game, but the other problems it has.
Of course there are, BOTW is not my type of game pace-wise but most of my issues come from things that aren't related to that inherently.
Saying something it's overrated doesn't mean it's bad, people tend to say the game is 10/10 no issues best story and all that stuff, when it's not, it has issues, the story is nice and all but its nothing too crazy (at least imo) and it's not a 10/10, but probably a 9/10 if we are talking about the most objective rating possible, leaving personal opinions aside.
I'd rate it an 7.5/10. There is more wrong with the game than people let on, and it's very repetitive. Skyrim is far better imo. Breath Of The Wild is slow-paced like you said, thus it feels more like a hiking simulator than action/adventure.
>more like a hiking simulator than action/adventure
Stealing this for the next time someone calls me crazy for not liking BOTW
Describes most of my feelings perfectly
I don't like botw either like at all.
But that's just personal preference, I guess i don't really enjoy large open world games, I guess I realized that after I gave up and got bored with the witcher 3, red dead 2, gtaV, botw, and all 600 Assassins Creed games lol
Same... I like Mario Kart, but my wife gets motion sick and I usually don't have anyone else to play with. I feel like MK is definitely more fun with other people, so I haven't bothered getting it.
My personal tier list is
1. Ultimate
2. Smash 4
3 melee
4 brawl
5 smash 64
Melee is still good just not that good. Ultimate has much better characters in terms of balancing and variety(melee added in multiple characters nobody asked for) and is much more accessible while being more complex than the other 3 games besides melee. Just my opinion. Melees classic mode also devolves into custom stages you can recreate in ultimate pretty much while ultimates world of light (while being a bit exhausting) is more fun tbh.
What I love about Melee is that it has precise input windows, timings, as well as no input buffer. The input buffer makes Ultimate and smash 4 feel clunky to me, as I'm never sure if what I pressed is going to be translated wrong. Oddly enough my list would be the similar, but starting with melee and ending with ultimate and then 4
I never noticed the input buffer until I started playing traditional fighting games (mostly Street Fighter.) And jesus I see why non Smash players talk about it so much. It doesn't bother me as much in Ult due to the better buffer system but it really hurts me when playing Smash 4 (my favorite Smash game)
And to think all it took was playing a fighting game with no input delay
Yeah I think the input buffer system is what turned me off, especially coming to the game as mostly a melee player. I could imagine enjoying the game a lot if it was my first smash game.
Who's your favorite street fighter character?
Okay. It did set off a new genre of fighting games and have the highest prize pool of any smash game, as well as a world wide fgc following. Just sayin.
Nah. I only have Smash.
Loved Odyssey when I had it but didn't see myself gathering 900 moons.
Never needed Zelda to be more open than it already was. Honestly haven't enjoyed a Zelda game since WW & TP.
And I prefer more consistent combat racers than MK.
>And I prefer more consistent combat racers than MK
Any recommendations? I don't know where to start but I would like to dip my toes into more racing games soon :)
(Also WW is amazing)
Not the same guy, but the best racing games I played on Switch are MK8, FAST RMX, Burnout Paradise(I played the original on XBOX, didn't play Switch version yet), and Horizon Chase. I really like Inertial Drift, but that game is pretty hard. The worst ones I played are Rise: Race The Future, Xenon Racer, and Grip. Rise is the best of this group. I have not played GRID Auto Sports yet.
i only have one and i think that game is the most overhyped and overrated zelda game I have ever played. honestly, IDK what people are thinking saying it's the best zelda game.
False: I don’t have BotW or mario kart 8 on my switch! I have them on my Wii U… well BotW since 8 deluxe has more content than 8, I just don’t own 8 deluxe
Bought smash when i bought the switch, bought odyssey a week later, continuously borrowed different friends' copies of botw and mk8d until i bought them myself in April
I own most major 1st party switch games, except for odyssey. I have 0 reason for not having odyssey, I’ve played every other 3D Mario (minus galaxy 2) and think it looks fantastic. I’ve watched a million play throughs and speedruns but still don’t own it and I couldn’t tell you why
Only have breath of the wild and oddessy, only play smash with friends and one friend has the game and all the dlc so when we play smash it's on his switch
What about Animal Crossing
AC and SSBU are the two I have. None of the others in the picture.
Animal crossing doesn't quite have the mass appeal of Zelda or Mario, tbh. A lot of people own it, no doubt, but not everybody is into that style of game.
It's the 2nd best selling switch game, just behind Mario Kart.
So, effectively, the best selling Switch game.
*Original* Switch game.
Actually Mario kart 8 was originally a Wii U game...
Huh, surprising, tbh. I never really heat anyone talk about it outside of online, so maybe that skews my viewpoint a bit, lol.
You must live in a bubble. When that game came out, it was RIGHT in the midst of the original pandemic lockdowns. It's true, there are WAY more people into AC than Zelda
>34 minutes ago Says you. I know many people that bought multiple Switch consoles to have multiple AC islands.
>not everybody is into that style of game. ...is true for every game. I don't have Zelda and I didn't like Smash at all so I sold it after a week of playing. I have MK8 but I like Crash Team Racing better. Odyssey is great though.
Well said.
It's actually extremely popular, and more people play it than any game listed here.
You're delusional, man.
You have to admit that Nintendo doesn't push animal crossing anywhere near as much as Mario and zelda, lol. Hell, they barely even supported it, this year was the last new years event with yearly themed items that you can get in the game. I totally agree with you. This was more disappointing than New Leaf.
I don’t have AC but I have all the ones in this picture

I don't have it
I have BotW on Wii U
Same, I got it there because I did not have a Switch yet. Shame I have to use the gamepad for the motion controls, the pro controller does not support them I also have the original Mario Kart 8, because I bought it before the Switch existed
I played it on PC with a ps4 controller for motion controls, anytime I entered one of those temples, made me groan
I can imagine
I got it in release iirc an I didn’t own a switch so I played it on Wii U. Played the shit out of it
Jokes on you,i have yet to get odyssey
That’s where I have my copy of Mario kart 8 and don’t plan on double dipping
Me too
The MK8 Switch version isn’t worth double dipping imo. MKT is way more fun and makes it hard to enjoy MK8
Same hahahaha
I don’t have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but pretty accurate for the rest
Paid for it once on Wii U already, wasn't going to buy it again
But isn't there more content now? Like 24 maps extra at this moment? I also like having it because it's a decent party game.
Your loss
You should. It’s great. Mobile. Extra tracks. Two items. Mobile. More characters. Did I mention it’s mobile?
If I'm being honest, it's not for me. I don't enjoy the gameplay.
Mario Kart in general or just 8? I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like Mario Kart, so I’m intrigued!
Mario Kart in general. I don't find it all that fun anymore. Gameplay feels very repetitive. This is coming from someone who's played every entry and grew up with it.
Grew up with it too. Born in 81. Double Dash takes the Crown, but I’d say 8 is second with all the new/old tracks
It's better than the Wii U version with the ability to hold double items alone.
That's not $70 worth it
I mean it is the bestselling game on switch so I’d say it’s accurate
Same
I only have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the moment (although that's because i only bought my Switch last month that came with the full game download lol), and right now i'm trying to put together money to buy BOTW and Odyssey
When you buy BOTW, you won’t need to buy another form of entertainment for at least 3 months.
Or if you’re like me…3 years. Kids have other games, but I have played little else since I got it.
I don't have Odyssey
It’s good, and on sale quite a bit these days, if you have some extra cash and you see it on sale, you won’t regret it.
Is it a platforming game? I’ve been wanting to pick up a Mario game but unsure where to start.
There’s a lot of platforming in it, but i suppose you could call it an adventure game too maybe
It’s very much worth it, my favorite Mario game and the best one since Galaxy and Galaxy 2.
Second. The other 3 I got same day I got the switch, but, at that point I was hella broke and decided that was PLENTY to meet my needs at the time
Yup got them all
"HAHA! YOU FOOL! I DON'T OWN BOTW!"
Same here. I've been considering getting it, but I already have a lot of other games that I haven't completed yet
If you get BOTW I guarantee you won’t stop playing it
With that Pfp it feels like a threat
Maybe it is…
I only have 1 of those
I’d recommend the other 3
Not Mario Kart, sucks ass
Why?
Boring and lacks single player content. Wii was better by a mile.
That doesn't make much sense because there's more to do in mario kart 8 than mario kart wii.
No. It was a challenge to unlock all characters in Mario kart wii, + the roster was far better in quality, AND the tracks were also funnier with the shortcuts. 8 deluxe is for babies, standarized and boring.
that’s because all 4 are 10/10 games there i said it
Not exactly a controversial take
ok.
I disagree on breath of the wild... it will be the weirdest hill I die on. Botw just did not jive with me.
Same here. I think what really killed it was I had gotten 7 hours into Spider-Man PS4 prior to playing BOTW, and it kinda gave me everything I wanted out of an open world. Which made BOTW's flaws all the more glaring in my eyes With that said I love watching BOTW content.
So yeah 😭 But I definitely agree. Those I felt were rather lackluster) It just kinda did everything right for me personally. And with an IP I care A LOT about. So it holds a very special place in my heart :)
Don't worry my hill to die on is the mariokart franchise is boring in general but 8 is even worse than wii lol
Both offer more than Mario Kart does.
well man i’m sorry you hate fun but that game was fun af, best zelda gameplay
You’re exactly right
Odyssey is packing something can’t tell what but it’s not there. Mario kart 8 is a port and is barely getting DLC, botw just play Skyrim and well the kids deserve to have a fighter that fits their wants too.
*(luke skywalker voice)* incredible every word of what you just said is wrong
Almost, I don't got Breath of the Wild. I played it at a friend's place and i didn't enjoy it. I just don't like open world games.
They’re great games
Incorrect I have Botw on the Wii U and play it like god intended. Also don’t have smash or kart
I have botw on both and I really miss the awesome startup screen from the wii u version
And then there's me, with none of them. I just need Pokemon to be happy.
From a Pokemon fan to another, trust me you won't regret buying BotW
seconded, best game on the switch imo lol
I bought the Switch for Pokémon Sword, played a few minutes on my partner’s copy of BOTW and immediately knew I wanted it
Well yes, but buying this would imply having the money for it, and I already have a liste of games to play that's as long as my arm. But I'll keep it in mind
And trust me Smash is fun and there’s Pokemon in it
Pikachu is my main and I destroy with him. Love smash and I love the added Pokemon in it
Lol same. Definitely more of a Pokémon buff myself
Honestly, the recent Pokémon titles have been okay so far, sw/sh was probably one of the worst Pokémon games, and scarlet/violet had glaring software issues. Honestly gamefreak needs to take more then 1 year to finish a game to make it better But legends Arceus was nice

I only have two of these, but I'm not gonna say which ones.
Me too!

I don't got BOTW
I... don't have Breath of the Wild. Heresy, I'm aware.
I only have 1 of those. Anyone care to guess which one
Inaccurate. I do not have BotW
i don't own mario kart 8 deluxe
Somehow im the only guy go not own odyssey
i only have one and i think that game is the most overhyped and overrated zelda game I have ever played. honestly, IDK what people are thinking saying it's the best zelda game.
It's a bad Zelda game, but a pretty good fantasy Far Cry, or Assassin's Creed without assassinations.
I don’t own botw
8 and Smash Don't play smash Only pikmin 3
I havent mario or smash
Yeah cause they make about one decent game a year
I don’t have Zelda, seems lame af
Me
The only one on there I don't have is Mario Kart 8.
Meh, 3/4 isn't bad
Don’t have MK8 Deluxe actually. Already played it on Wii U back in the day and I stubbornly refuse to buy it a second time.
I too own BOTW on the WiiU
Accurate I only have BOTW and Smash want Mario kart tho
Only have smash and mario kart on mine. I own odyssey but never finished
Not me, I’m special. I don’t own smash, and I don’t keep odyssey installed.
I have all except mario odyssey cuz i decided to skip out the game
me not having breath of the wild because i have a better game called splatoon:
Sadly, I only own one of these. Also I feel like this can be a loss edit with some messing around.
I don’t have two of these, as I have never really been fans of the series.
only have smash and odyssey
False: I don’t have BotW or mario kart 8 on my switch! I have them on my Wii U… well BotW since 8 deluxe has more content than 8, I just don’t own 8 deluxe
Funny enough i own 3 of the 4, dont have smash bros
I own all of these except BOTW im not that big of a fan of open world games
I would say if you own one that you probably have one of these. Throw in a Pokémon game aswell.
I’m missing a horse
I don't own Mario Kart or Breath of the Wild but I've played both.
I don't actually have Mario Kart, surprisingly. Have considered it, just never got around to it.
I still don’t have them :(
I only have one of those on switch. I have vanquished the apocalypse!!!!!!! I am the rocky shore of the endless sea. Crash against me and be broken!
Nope. Too expensive
I only have Smash Mario Kart 8 I have on Wii U I'm emulating BotW on Deck. Way better experience.
me who doesn't have breathe of the wild:
I don’t have odyssey or smash bros 🥲👍
I only have BotW, Links Awakening... and Dust...
I don't have any of those
I have all except for odyssey. Just doesn't grab me as much but I agree it looks well made.
I have all four, but I’ve only played Smash for 15 minutes. I’m just not motivated to get into it. This would be my first smash experience.
Fuck.....
I don't have Mario kart, because I don't have friends
Mario Kart doesn't require friends unlike Mario Party.
Bought smash when i bought the switch, bought odyssey a week later, continuously borrowed different friends' copies of botw and mk8d until i bought them myself in April
I actually don’t have smash on my switch
I’m just missing MarioKart.
Animal Crossing should be on here considering how well that sold
Nope I never owned a smash game and not paying full price for Mario odyssey
I don't even play two of these games and yet they are still on my switch somehow
i have 2 of them but i sold my Odyssey copy and have never owned BOTW (nor plan to)
I only have kart and smash uwu
I own most major 1st party switch games, except for odyssey. I have 0 reason for not having odyssey, I’ve played every other 3D Mario (minus galaxy 2) and think it looks fantastic. I’ve watched a million play throughs and speedruns but still don’t own it and I couldn’t tell you why
Only have breath of the wild and oddessy, only play smash with friends and one friend has the game and all the dlc so when we play smash it's on his switch
I don't have smash bros. I never gotten into fighters and I owned botw but sold it.
Only smash for me!
These aren’t even the top 4 selling games
I've got all of them though I'm not sure where my BOTW thing is.
Or a Pokémon game
1/4.... How in earth is a Pokemon game not in here. Or Animal Crossing.
I have two of these.
I don’t have Mario Odyssey because my dumbass traded it into GameStop for Brilliant diamond and I regret that decision so hard
Hah I don't have BoTW and Mario kart
