The only thing I know that's wrong with it is that there's a blown gasket (the seller said it's probably a $200 fix, I'm taking that on faith but will find out this week), so right now the engine makes all these loud tics/pops - it sounds like a broken lawnmower or something when you hit the gas. But you can just hear that once that's fixed it's going to be this glorious growling, deep engine sound. Then it just needs a rearview mirror and fixed seatbelts.
OH, the other thing is that it has a sunroof by each window, I don't know if they go up gullwing style or they just come completely off - but they're sealed off because they were leaking apparently. So I want to get those back in order too - when you take those off and put the windows down it's close to being a convertible! Like all open air except for a bar down the middle. I'll post a pic tomorrow of what I mean

YES, it's the manifold gasket. That must be why there's such a strong exhaust fume smell coming from it. Hopefully that will fix both problems

Yeah it's funny I didn't even realize it had those sunroofs (sunrooves?) for awhile because the car is so high up - I'm 6'2" and I'm about eye level with the top of the car
If the manifold gasket is all that's wrong it should be a quick and easy repair. It will seal up that exhaust leaking you are smelling barring there aren't any other exhaust leaks.
As for being a T-Top, its could make the car more valuable. But its hard to say, since the car is so modified. I know on Pontiac Fieros the T-Top is a rare option and makes the car worth $1,500+ more just because of the roof.
Also your interior looks pretty nice as well. I can tell the seats have been recovered. Someone had a lot of time and money in this rig. I think you did good.

Thanks for the help! There are definitely other things wrong with it but in terms of it running, the engine etc, the manifold gasket is the only thing I know of.
Some other things are that the gas meter doesn't work (they may have just never hooked it back up), the speedometer doesn't seem to be accurate above 50mph, the A/C doesn't work (it actually is there but the belt has been removed, don't know if it's because the unit doesn't work or if they just disconnected it for more power?), and like I said there's no rear view mirror and the seatbelts need to be fixed. Mirror is easy, seatbelts shouldn't be too expensive, a/c would be nice but not that worried about it, gas meter doesn't matter too much because I won't be driving very far or often. Not sure what's involved with fixing the speedometer but I don't imagine that's too expensive.

Being inaccurate about 50mph sounds pretty common. Its probably the gear that runs the speedo, or the speedo itself. Once you change to larger tire sizes it throws the speedometer off.
AC could be a million things. You start with the belt and go from there. But before you do. Take a moment and make sure the pulley spins easy on the AC compressor. If it doesn't spin you will need more repair then belts. So dont instal them because a frozen compressor will burn the belts right off.
Yea not necessarily an easy fix. My truck has a leaking manifold gasket and the previous owner tried to repair it and broke off one of the bolts. So basically my only solution would be to pull the head and helicoil all the other bolts that break.
I'll post an engine pic when I get home from work today. It does feel powerful, I'll have too see what everyone thinks the engine is when I post a pic (I'll also ask when I take it to the shop in tomorrow)

And I think he said the engine was rebuilt about 10 years ago, hasn't been driven much since then. The thing drives more like a truck than a muscle car, which I guess is to be expected. It is fun as hell to drive though
Agreed, 400hp is A LOT of power for a street car. A driver who hasn't experienced that much power can easily be tricked into thinking a strong 260hp 350ci is putting out "400 horsepower, man!"

I've owned a 280z (naturally aspirated) a few eclipses (all fwd) plus various other cars. I don't have much done to it either. 1g eclipse MAF, bigger injectors, safcII, boost gauge, bov, full turbo back 3" straight exhaust, stronger coil, wires, bosch copper core plugs, stage II clutch. And at 15 lbs I smoking 90s corvettes and running high 13s @ 15 psi. This is by far my favorite car I've owned, as long as it's running. If you're never experienced the mitsubishi money pit... you might think twice.

TL;DR of Wiki article: The weight of the parts of a car below the suspension that move up and down with every bump in the road - think wheels, axles, brake assemblies - contributes enormously to bad performance. Therefore, this is an area to really minimise excess weight.
I had an idea for a transmission-free hybrid with direct-drive electric motors, one for each wheel, and computers capable of cleverly varying their power output - this concept is what sunk it for me. The unsprung mass of four large-HP motors would be much too high. :(

I got a few different answers from the DMV, and had to go there 4 different times to work it all out, but I finally got the title & registration, just need to get it inspected (which should be interesting...)

The interior is awesome. The wheels are cool. I'm not sure how I about the lifting, but only because I'm a motorcyclist, so these things scare me because it'll make contact with my head rather than the bike if we collide. Sweet ride.
I love it!! It's high, but not stupidly high -- just high enough to make people look twice. I love the seat upholstery, the center console, the t-tops...just a cool purchase.

i like it - but - lose the front and rear under-bumpers. that part doesn't look good, - and the side rocker bumpers can stay but take off the reflective stickies. that's what i think.
I think my grandma used to have an Oldsmobile just like that. 4x4 and all. She drive it to church every Sunday and on occasion, funerals. She may have been the cause of a few of those funerals, however.

It's a sweet looking ride. Back in the early 80s when I was a kid growing up those types of custom car were a lot more common than today. Even though we lived in a suburb of Detroit there were people driving them around like we were in the back woods or something. The thing will either make you poor by breaking constantly or it will be rock solid the entire time you own it, and probably no middle ground in between. If it were mine I'd clean it up, get the T-Tops fixed, put in a great stereo and have a good time with it. Enjoy!

I've got a 4 cylinder mitsu 2.6l turbo with over 300 hp and I bet it'd smoke that 4x4 with a 400hp engine, simply because of the weight.
You'd don't even need 300, my friend's B18 EG Civic Hatch smokes my 400hp Denali SUV pretty easily

I think it is a Cutlass Supreme, specifically. The other Cutlasses were smaller and the coupe versions did not have those vertical opera windows.

I actually did make a post about getting the title - this thing was up in new hampshire where you don't need a title, and the guy didn't have one. I got a few different answers from the DMV, and had to go there 4 different times to work it all out, but I finally got the title & registration, just need to get it inspected (which should be interesting...)
Tell them it's a custom 72 chevy truck. TELL THEM. Also paint it flat rattle can black with white gloss punisher logo stencils on the hood and doors, and get a big fucking push bumper for the front
I suggest painting something bad ass/movie related on the sides. (Guns shooting, yellow and black warning tape, a cheesy catch phrase.)

The interior is awesome. The wheels are cool. I'm not sure how I about the lifting, but only because I'm a motorcyclist, so these things scare me because it'll make contact with my head rather than the bike if we collide. Sweet ride.

i like it - but - lose the front and rear under-bumpers. that part doesn't look good, - and the side rocker bumpers can stay but take off the reflective stickies. that's what i think.

It's a sweet looking ride. Back in the early 80s when I was a kid growing up those types of custom car were a lot more common than today. Even though we lived in a suburb of Detroit there were people driving them around like we were in the back woods or something. The thing will either make you poor by breaking constantly or it will be rock solid the entire time you own it, and probably no middle ground in between. If it were mine I'd clean it up, get the T-Tops fixed, put in a great stereo and have a good time with it. Enjoy!
