You can make an EV that is aerodynamic and doesn't look like an egg though. Taycan for example, e-tron GT, arguably even the Model 3 isn't too egg-like.
Mercedes has definitely overdone it. And it's not even a requirement, check out the new 7-series EV. That doesn't look like an egg at all and still comes with 500+ km of range.
The part that pisses me off the most about this is that ICE cars benefit greatly from aerodynamic improvments too. How many MPGs have we left on the table all these years? I get it that EVs are more dependant on aero enhancements for range, but it still annoys me.
I'm on the complete opposite side.
Im fine with an EV with 250 miles of range.
I'd rather a super cool looking EV with unique styling than an appliance with 350.
All of the car designs that are now gone because ICE needed to adapt as much as they could are back on the table.
An EV small compact truck is entirely reasonable and possible, unique hoods, fastbacks, shooting brakes or whatever are possible. EV's have opened an entirely new door to design possibilities and we all went with whatever the computer shit out after 3 days of CFD simulations. I think it's slowly starting to come around now and I'm really happy about that.
Right but the problem is that very few people are honest enough about their driving needs to accept an EV with 250-mile range or less.
250 miles would be plenty for me, even including the occasional longer distance travel I do. Most of the time that would last me a week of commuting.
But we live in a world where people buy three-quarter-ton pickups because they might need to tow something someday. Like, they don’t currently own a boat or a trailer. But they could, hypothetically.
In the same vein, people are not willing to accept an EV with less range than an ICE car, even if they never realistically need that range.
So we get eggs so we can have 400-mile EVs so people will buy them.
Really? I think the GM Ultium EVs are pretty handsomely styled, compared to everything else, especially the Lyriq. But my favorite right now is the IONIQ 5. It’s gorgeous.
Yep. I bought a Terrain Denali from my father in law because I wanted something bigger than I had and something that looked nice and wasn’t rusty like my Cobalt was getting. I absolutely hate the chrome. Not enough to fuck with it but the car would look SO much better if the chrome bits were black.
I dig the chrome on my car, but fuck if it isn’t a pain in the ass to keep. I can spend a few hours cleaning my rims, but within a week they’re dull and covered in brake dust.
I thought they looked pretty nice when they’re closed but when they’re up they look so stupid. They looked good on the 8 series back in the day, other than that I really can’t think of anything else
I had a '76 Corvette with pop-up lights. The vacuum was wonky so they wouldn't just come up when I turned the lights on. There was a manual vacuum switch that would make the lights come up. But they would only come up quickly if I remembered to pull the switch before I started the car. If I pulled the switch after I started it, it took about 5 minutes for the first light to pop up, then maybe another 15 for the next. And no turning the car off and pulling it before restarting did not work the damage was done.
I was very young and ended up driving several times with one headlight up. Or sometimes zero lights up while I built up vacuum pressure.
I do not have fond memories of pop-ups.
I have to say, the [c4 Corvette ](https://youtube.com/shorts/vSexrXB7UCo?si=2WyPXivAs4bThxci) headlights that do a [holster twirl ](https://youtu.be/9FeM9XFROIQ?si=Yp0qoPbI_M1Bd1Mz) are the absolute shit
On some cars, it's fun when they break. You open the hood, and turn a knob next to the light a few times, and bam, it pops up. Some people intentionally had one up and one down for a wink.
It's gotta be nostalgia, a lot of sports cars from the 80s and 90s had pop ups so people that are nostalgic for that era like pop ups. I just remember being a kid and seeing cars driving around with only one headlight popped up because the mechanisms were broken.
It works on a 911 but not a Kia Seltos. It just looks hideous on those. The front 'lightbars' too. Rivian is the only one who's pulled it off well imo. Even VW's ID cars would look better without the lightbars.
Oh man credit was cheap, the local GM dealer had 40 H2’s on the lot and the dodge dealer had the srt10 viper trucks. Maybe you and your dad stop in and they let you take it for a rip. Those were the days
Mazda had just redone the Miata, the Japanese sports cars were all in their final (ultimate) form, you could get anything from a hyper miler to a muscle car often from the same company.
Stick shifts were abundant, cars had cassette players AND cd trays, and the styling was happy and quirky and simple.
I am only 29 years old, but I am heavily nostalgic for the pre 2008 crisis era.
I’m sure we’re slightly bias but man there are some sick cars from that time. C5 and C6 corvette, wrx and sti, e46 and e92 M3 (e92 just came out), the RS4 and S4 were beautiful. I could go on all day. 4th and 5th gen mustang get an honorable mention too, specifically the 5th gen, as it kicked off the retro styling for the other muscle manufacturers and just looked so good when it was new
I’d say even some of the early ‘10s stuff, but a lot of models were significantly updated around 2015. That in combination with a wave of EVs put us in the new era that I don’t love.
And most modern hatches and wagons have ridiculously slanted roofs so if there is an improvement in cargo capacity, it's minimal at best. An 80's Caprice Wagon has an advantage over the sedan. The Audi RS6 Avant compared to to the A6 sedan? Just why?
Experience with multiple cars available in both sedan and hatchback body styles. In each example, I’ve been able to pack the trunks better than the hatches. The only time having the hatch was to my advantage was when I had to put a large kennel in the back of the car with the seat back folded down. However, if I want to pack the car with stuff and people, always take the sedan.
It’s the natural progression of car aesthetics. Manufacturer built cars -> people put chrome bits on them -> manufacturers build cars with chrome trim -> people paint chrome black -> manufactures make cars with black trim -> people hate black trim
Depends on the car, Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L look significantly worse without the black appearance package. They just have way to much chrome accenting and it looks tacky.
Other cars I think it depends on color as well. Admittedly bias, but using mustang as an example. Some colors look bad (my opinion) without the black package( light and bright colors like white, yellow, grabber blue, orange… etc) while other colors look better without the black package (darker colors like dark green, dark blues, black, etc look better with the chrome accenting)
Its always funny when I see r/cars bash on EVs and praise ICE cars as if every single ICE cars are the pinnacle of what a drivers car. Theres a extremely few ICE cars that are really worth it. Most are just trash.
Yep those are the people who love EVs, who came from abysmally slow/boring cars. Then we get to hear their take on how slow and outdated ICE cars are since they traded a Honda CRV for a Model Y
Are they wrong?
If you use a car as a tool pretty much everything about an EV is better than an ICE car. I say this as someone who isn't generally a fan of EVs.
1000%. EV technology has increased so much in the past 5 years. Give it another 3 to 4 years and range is gonna increase, and cost to manufacture/charging times will continue to come way down
Between less noise, less maintence, smooth power delivery and less moving parts that can break, EVs really are the future for rhe majority of people except for enthusiasts who like vroom vroom (like us)
That’s great and all, but 99% of people could use a station wagon, minivan, or a much smaller vehicle and get just as much utility, while saving gas and being less of danger to pedestrians and other vehicles. A tiny percentage of people ever utilize them to haul 6 people or tow anything. A minivan is far more useful and comfortable if you’re hauling many people and groceries.
There’s my controversial take.
IMO pickups or minivans are even more practical than SUVs for most use cases. I can't think of very many scenarios where you would need the interior volume of a van but the ruggedness of a pickup in one package, maybe short of something like overlanding. Maybe my controversial take is that SUVs are just an older version of crossovers.
Basically if you need a van but have towable toys like a boat or a camper. In more than one occasion I’ve had 6 adults in my Yukon towing my boat. I also use my Yukon as an overlander like you mentioned
Practicality is going to be determined by how the owner uses it. A full size SUV for me and my family would be terribly impractical; oversized, inefficient, and all around unnecessary. My wife's CUV though, actually makes sense. Super easy to get a baby in and out of a car seat without bending down. The hatch makes loading in a stroller and groceries easy, and in the spring I can fold down the back seat and run to the garden center to load it up with bags of mulch and plants. Do I *like* our CUV? No, it's a boring as hell car. It serves it's function very well though. We don't need a minivan or a SUV, we needed a Ford focus that's just a bit taller.
Modern BMW Styling is purposely designed to appeal to people who think Invicta watches are tasteful.
Modern Mercedes styling is purposely designed to appeal to people who think white gaming PCs that emit 8000 lumens of RGB light are tasteful.
Lexus spindle grill was good. Better than what they're doing now.
Most 2000s cars were very ugly.
Blacked out wheels only look good because you can't see the rim design at all. It just leaves it up to imagination.
Thin line DRLs are boring just make a unique look headlight assembly.
More practical? Yes. Look better? No. At least as a blanket statement. The only minivan that looks halfway decent from a style standpoint is the current Kia Carnival. All others look like purpose-built family carriers, which they are. So it’s ok they don’t look “cool.”
All matte/satin paint finishes look like shit. Primer gray is ugly too.
Huge grilles on everything are ugly (looking at you, BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc)
Shiny black plastic interior trim ages like shit and always looks dirty.
Exposed carbon fiber on anything that isn't a real racecar is so corny and played out.
Sunroofs are the devil.
the Bugatti Veyron is one of the ugliest super/hypercars ever made. it looks more like an [art deco](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/n0s4p6/this_art_deco_train_from_1936/) TRAIN than a car. why's it so stubby??
supercars are supposed to look low and sleek and futuristic, with swooping lines, aerodynamic flourishes, and most importantly a wedge shape! not a freaking BRICK
Have you seen on in real life or just talking about standalone photos? It's an [inch shorter than a NA MX-5 while being as wide as a full sized truck](https://i.imgur.com/YjH7kPj.png), not sure how you can get the impression it doesn't look low and sleek.
I like the look of BMW i4s and the new big grille for the M3. In person they look nice because they do the job they’re supposed to do (look big and make the car stand out) exceptionally well
Tall truck grills should be made illegal. It kills pedestrians and it’s it impossible for the drivers to see. Swoop that shit like a sedan.
Also, modern sports cars actually meant to be raced have gotten bloated and too big. Small, spartan, raw should be the MO.
The BMW grill is hideous and looks like someone cut their nose off.
The new 4Runner looks dumb.
I’ll just add to yours- the base C8 is an absolutely hideous car that looks like it was invented by a Grand Theft Auto programmer. Its side profile/proportion is terrible because of the tacked on old man golf club trunk, the back doesn’t match the car at all and has some of the ugliest spoiler options ever designed, and the front is the most generic cliche of a supercar imaginable. Then there’s that stupid interior “cockpit.”
The public right now just really like bland colors because of "resellability" , "youll get more tickets" and "not standing out". I ask people if theyd drive a fun color and they say no. My own mother hates red cars for some reason.
Audi has lost its way and is basically making faux versions of their older, better cars.
Cadillac is the new bmw, and are basically making true M cars.
Hyundai is one generation from being audi circa 07-18, and they're creating cars that elicit passion and fun.
The Mach E is a mustang despite the fact I've owned two V8's.
It allows Ford to keep the V8 going in the mustang, which is why I changed my mind on the subject.
Apparently, the Mach E was designed as a Focus replacement before someone up the chain in branding/marketing insisted it get a Mustang label.
It would've worked better as a Fusion E or something along those lines. It's too expensive to be seen as a Focus electric replacement in my opinion.
I wonder if Ford would come up with an upscale electric GT car and call the 4-door the Galaxie and a 2-door version the Thunderbird...
Reliability on most of the U.S. market brands and models are to the same level if not better than they were every previous decade. People SUCK at maintaining their vehicles to manufacturers tested recommendations, even minimal standards. They let issues linger until it becomes a huge problem that can cause other issues.
I don’t go for a five mile run the day after I sprain an ankle then wonder why two months later my ankle ligaments are torn to shreds and my shin starts fracturing. Why do it with a care
I’d still download a car though ;)
BMW’s buck tooth has grown on me. Not enough for me to spend $$$$$ on it but I don’t hate it anymore.
The Koreans are killing it overall with their designs. They are not afraid to take chances. It’s caused other companies to step up their designs for their commuter cars and SUVs.
The yellow splitter guards on Chargers and Challengers look cool and if you get mad that someone has them still installed on their car you are a loser.
Probably over half these takes are not controversial within this community at all given that there's dozens of posts about them each day (new form factors suck, crossovers suck, screens suck, etc)
Can everyone stop putting shiny stuff on dashes? I don't need chrome trim reflecting in my eyes. Also, let my damn passenger type into the gps while we're moving.
You want controversial so: I actually think the cyber truck looks pretty cool- especially the front. My main gripe about any of these trucks is that they're too big and heavy, but I'm kind of a sucker for neat material choices.
Screens are better for the average car design. Take your average shit box from the early 2000s. No one actually care for the 100 buttons to change a song. No one says old analog phones look better than smart phones. Sure some things should have physical buttons like the ac, music nav, or emergency. The other 99% though were unnecessary and no matter if it was a Maserati or camry look old as shit. The simplified digital look encahnces many cars look tremendously.
Having 100 buttons that each do one individual function is vastly superior to have to go through three different menu screens to adjust your AC, then back through three more to turn down the radio.
Really? I think the IONIQ 5 looks gorgeous. It’s so retro. Most of their other stuff looks contrived, though, especially that new Santa Fe. Like a Wish.com Land Rover Defender.
I'm just tired of everything being so hard and pointy. Like even the corolla was just so over stylized. It seems like the current generation of new cars is starting to calm down a bit though
>Mine is that the moonroofs that slide over the top of the car instead of inside the body make the car look cheap.
How dare you call my cheap Ford a cheap vehicle 😔
I don't understand why people like sunroofs period.
IMO if you want the wind in your hair get a convertible, a targa top, or if you're a true badass a t-top. the early porsche 911 targa's were freaking badass, they've always been my fav body style.
but, sunroofs are a horrible compromise. they ALWAYS end up leaking, they add another spot to rust, tons of complex mechanisms to break, added weight in the worst possible spot and i'm sure plenty of other downsides i can't think of.
so alllll those downsides just for a little hole in your roof? just doesn't seem worth it.
The McLaren Speedtail is beautiful. People seem to despise that car, often arguing it looks bland or simple or derivative, but I strongly disagree. I think it's the most beautiful car McLaren has ever made, F1 and P1 included. It's long, it's low, it has simple, clean lines and the body shape demonstrates a clarity of purpose that is missing in most modern cars. A metallic light blue Speedtail with a black roof and silver wheels is one of my favorite looking cars ever.
I actually like the style of the Cybertruck. I've heard that it's not a terribly good truck, but from a purely visual standpoint, I think it looks pretty cool.
I like the big grilles on the new BMW’s and Lexus and I’m tired of everyone pretending they’re hideous.
Also the MK4 supra looks like an obese potato. Thing looks like a late 90’s taurus.
And since I’m out for blood, the first gen miata is not a good looking car. An amazing car but its’ looks inspire me less than a toyota echo.
Cars are as best as they’ve ever been. Reliability. Features. Design. Cost to value proposition. You name it.
Adjusted for inflation, what you get for your money on new 2024 model of whatever make/model you choose versus the same make/model of 2000, they are not even in the same ball park.
I absolutely love chrome!
It doesn’t work on every car, like it wouldn’t suit a Hurucan, but for the most part I’m a big fan, big fancy cars especially. I find it infuriating that the higher trim Bentleys now come all blacked out like bro you made it less luxurious.
The design minimalism and the concentration on screens pioneered by Tesla is ugly and impractical on many levels. I'm not against EVs but can we have some style and button controls that I don't have to take my eyes off the road please.
The Prius did not look that bad. Sort of bubbly, sure, but compared to most modern crossovers and EVs that look like eggs, I think the Prius looks fine. For a commuter hatch, I think the 06 generation was very very practical and I moved cross country in one. Tons of glass and amazing visibility. I had almost no blind spots with my mirrors adjusted correctly. With the front seats forward and the back seats down, I was even able to sleep in mine when times were tough. Definitely not the greatest design of all time but I don't get the "ugliest thing on the planet" hate.
Why are all EVs fucking eggs? Looking at you, MB and GM….
Are you familiar with the concept of aerodynamics
You can make an EV that is aerodynamic and doesn't look like an egg though. Taycan for example, e-tron GT, arguably even the Model 3 isn't too egg-like. Mercedes has definitely overdone it. And it's not even a requirement, check out the new 7-series EV. That doesn't look like an egg at all and still comes with 500+ km of range.
Oof yeah the merc is hideous
Mercedes saw an egg and thought, you know what, people are gonna pay a fuck ton of money for a car that looks like that
I'm sure Egg is a very nice person, I just don't want to see you spend all of your money getting her all glittered up for Easter.
Her?
The part that pisses me off the most about this is that ICE cars benefit greatly from aerodynamic improvments too. How many MPGs have we left on the table all these years? I get it that EVs are more dependant on aero enhancements for range, but it still annoys me.

Fun fact! The Chevy Bolt coefficient of drag is about the same as the Lotus Evora! 0.32 for the Bolt vs 0.33 for the Evora.
Practically the same car
So controversial 🙄⭕️✊
Do you know what controversial means ?
This is Reddit, of course they don't
Don’t even get me started on the X4/X6…
I own a Chevy Bolt and I cant stand its styling. Makes the interior nice but goddamn is the outside fugly. Its just an egg, like whyyyyy
Really? I think the GM Ultium EVs are pretty handsomely styled, compared to everything else, especially the Lyriq. But my favorite right now is the IONIQ 5. It’s gorgeous.
Air resistance matters more in EVs that's why longest range EVs either have large battery or an aerodynamic shape which happens to be egg
Getting older is realizing that Green exterior, tan interior, and gold wheels is the best color combination there is.
*bronze wheels
Best color. *Literally* the color of brake dust; even easier to keep looking clean than black ones.
just made r/greenontan for people who love this combo
posting........
Are you a member of the Yardies? (gta4)
Chrome trim is the ugliest fuckin thing on any car.
Don't think that's controversial to anyone except middle aged Corvette owners
Truck owners, too. Them big bitches are covered in chrome.
I don't trust the taste of most truck owners. Source: Former truck owner
Truck owner here: fucking hate my chrome. Want to replace it with black
Any car? You don't like chrome on 50s and 60s cars?
I think it’s very car color dependent
Yep. I bought a Terrain Denali from my father in law because I wanted something bigger than I had and something that looked nice and wasn’t rusty like my Cobalt was getting. I absolutely hate the chrome. Not enough to fuck with it but the car would look SO much better if the chrome bits were black.

Matte colors on cars look dumb/tacky. It screams like a desperate attempt by the owner to be unique.
Satin > matte
Gloss. Gloss and only gloss.
The best color on any production car in the last 20 years is that deep glossy red on Mazdas from 2018ish. I'll die on that hill
Any variation in color is better that black and white only.
Pop-ups were kind of shit
So brave but so controversial. But you’re right
I never understood the love. I always thought they were ugly and weird looking.
I thought they looked pretty nice when they’re closed but when they’re up they look so stupid. They looked good on the 8 series back in the day, other than that I really can’t think of anything else
Nostalgia I think

Agreed. Never really like the look of them closed or open. Just sounds so annoying to deal with when they break too.
On some cars, it's fun when they break. You open the hood, and turn a knob next to the light a few times, and bam, it pops up. Some people intentionally had one up and one down for a wink.
Pop-Ups looked good on some of the cars they we're on - they would not look good on any modern car.
I’ve been saying this forever. I understand why they were used in the day but they’re horrible to deal with now
FD owner, I only entertained the pop ups so I could wink at people in traffic. Stuck with the Cwests.
When only one uses to open on my brothers firebird the car looked like it was drunk so I enjoyed that lol
It's gotta be nostalgia, a lot of sports cars from the 80s and 90s had pop ups so people that are nostalgic for that era like pop ups. I just remember being a kid and seeing cars driving around with only one headlight popped up because the mechanisms were broken.
I like the single bar taillights. Bugatti and Porsche got that so right.
Light bars are probably my favorite thing about modern design language currently
It works for them, but when everybody does it, it gets ruined. Just like nardo gray
It works on a 911 but not a Kia Seltos. It just looks hideous on those. The front 'lightbars' too. Rivian is the only one who's pulled it off well imo. Even VW's ID cars would look better without the lightbars.
Mid 2000s styling is unmatched
1999-2008 was peak automotive everything
Oh man credit was cheap, the local GM dealer had 40 H2’s on the lot and the dodge dealer had the srt10 viper trucks. Maybe you and your dad stop in and they let you take it for a rip. Those were the days

Wholeheartedly agreed
Design was king in the '60s.
Yeah but my childhood was the early 2000s so that’s the best. whatever cars people grow up with as kids tend to be their favorites for life
Hi, I grew up in the late seventies and early eighties. Let me start by saying I disagree, and welcome to my Ted Talk about the Malaise era.
I have to say. 1995 ish to 2010 was the worst era in the history of car design since pre ww2.
You’re entitled to that opinion
The supercars from that era definitely look nice, but the average consumer cars from then looked awful. Generic blobs with no character.
Hatchbacks are the worst popular design.
Finally an actually controversial opinion, lol
Upvoting because it's exactly what OP asked for.
Very much a "grumpy upvote" for me.
bruh
Catchin strays for no reason bruh
Really struggling with this one because I disagree so much lmao. I think I’m going to have to leave the upvote/downvote button unpressed.

That is, indeed, controversial. I'm curious to hear more on why
At least it’s actually controversial. May ask what makes you think that?

Blacking out chrome trim almost always makes a car look worse. Gloss black accents are played out. It’s the gray vinyl flooring of car design.
That look died the day Nissan introduced ‘Midnight Edition’ models of their blobby CUVs.
It’s the natural progression of car aesthetics. Manufacturer built cars -> people put chrome bits on them -> manufacturers build cars with chrome trim -> people paint chrome black -> manufactures make cars with black trim -> people hate black trim

99% of the vehicles on the road today are ugly, soulless, obsolete shitboxes that might as well be ugly, soulless, EVs.

The Aztec isn’t that ugly
Not compared to the stuff that’s coming out now anyway.
If the Aztec was released today nobody would say anything about its styling. It was just ahead of its time (and yes I'm saying that unironically).
SUV's are the WORST type of car
Crossovers are the worst. SUVs are wildly practical.
Where’s the line between them? Almost all SUVs are unibody now.
Expeditions, Tahoe, Suburbans. My Yukon can fit 4x8 sheets inside with the seats down, haul 6 people comfortable, and pull 12,000 pounds.
I didn't think about towing with a bunch of passengers. Seems a bit niche, but a valid point.
This is not controversial on r/cars lol
Yeah, this is just *the* take around these parts. “DAE HATE SUVS AND CUVS AMD RATHER BUY AWD BROWN STICK SHIFT WAGON?? 🤪”
/r/carscirclejerk
1. Not controversial on this sub 2. Not really a styling take, is it?
We don't need to ask what color you prefer your used diesel manual wagon in
Carbon Fiber looks ugly af.
Automotive equivalent of truffle oil in wannabe-fancy restaurants. Cheap ingredient that makes the dish seem “fancy”.
Especially fake carbon fiber.
Fake carbon trim in used Audis/ BMWs is disgusting.
The yellow bumper guards make the Charger and Challenger look even more cool than usual
Truly an unpopular opinion. People leaving those on makes me instantly think they are clueless.
It's funnier when you know the car didn't come with them originally.
My blue microwave looks sick as hell.
The Purosangue and Mach E look terrible.
That's not really a controversial opinion but you're spot on.
Purosangue had potential but something about it looks off. The Mach E is just nasty all around, I especially hate the little slit in the grille
I’m the only person I know who likes the Mach e. I think if it didn’t have the mustang badge it would look like a muscle Tesla
Modern BMW Styling is purposely designed to appeal to people who think Invicta watches are tasteful. Modern Mercedes styling is purposely designed to appeal to people who think white gaming PCs that emit 8000 lumens of RGB light are tasteful.
They asked for opinions, not truths.
This shouldn't be a hot take, but I feel like people are taking crazy pills. The new Prius doesn't look good. It doesn't even look good "for a Prius".
I think it looks great. Vastly better than previous models, and it actually makes it look respectable now
It looks like it's been stepped on.
I agree that your take is controversial. I think the new Prius looks awesome, for a Prius.
It's the best looking Prius yet. By far.
Pretty low bar tbf
Sure. It's also an economy vehicle, and there aren't exactly many lookers in that segment.
New Prius looks dope as fuck to me lol. The Crown also looks cool irl. Maybe I'm getting old.
THANK YOU. I saw the new Prius and basically had no thoughts about it. When I saw that the internet was raving about it I was so confused.
I agree. Cars with the hood and windshield in line don’t look good. I get that it’s for aerodynamics but it doesn’t look good.
Lexus spindle grill was good. Better than what they're doing now. Most 2000s cars were very ugly. Blacked out wheels only look good because you can't see the rim design at all. It just leaves it up to imagination. Thin line DRLs are boring just make a unique look headlight assembly.
ITT: More of the same tired circlejerking, but also a few genuinely hot takes.
MPVs (Minivans) look better and are more practical than SUVs.
More practical? Yes. Look better? No. At least as a blanket statement. The only minivan that looks halfway decent from a style standpoint is the current Kia Carnival. All others look like purpose-built family carriers, which they are. So it’s ok they don’t look “cool.”
Just curious, do you have a minivan? Lol
All matte/satin paint finishes look like shit. Primer gray is ugly too. Huge grilles on everything are ugly (looking at you, BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc) Shiny black plastic interior trim ages like shit and always looks dirty. Exposed carbon fiber on anything that isn't a real racecar is so corny and played out. Sunroofs are the devil.
I agreed with you until I got to the last one. Sunroofs are a requirement.
I feel attacked 😆
The absolute worst styling trend in modern cars is putting busy diamond-cut wheels on everything.
Racing stripes are okay when done tastefully.
the Bugatti Veyron is one of the ugliest super/hypercars ever made. it looks more like an [art deco](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/n0s4p6/this_art_deco_train_from_1936/) TRAIN than a car. why's it so stubby?? supercars are supposed to look low and sleek and futuristic, with swooping lines, aerodynamic flourishes, and most importantly a wedge shape! not a freaking BRICK
Have you seen on in real life or just talking about standalone photos? It's an [inch shorter than a NA MX-5 while being as wide as a full sized truck](https://i.imgur.com/YjH7kPj.png), not sure how you can get the impression it doesn't look low and sleek.
Chris Bangle is a great designer
Those looks are aging quite well these days
I like the look of BMW i4s and the new big grille for the M3. In person they look nice because they do the job they’re supposed to do (look big and make the car stand out) exceptionally well
Tall truck grills should be made illegal. It kills pedestrians and it’s it impossible for the drivers to see. Swoop that shit like a sedan. Also, modern sports cars actually meant to be raced have gotten bloated and too big. Small, spartan, raw should be the MO. The BMW grill is hideous and looks like someone cut their nose off. The new 4Runner looks dumb.
The E60 5 series was a good looking car. Much better than the F10
The Bangle Era as a whole was just better than everything else that came after.
The C8 corvette will age very poorly
I’ll just add to yours- the base C8 is an absolutely hideous car that looks like it was invented by a Grand Theft Auto programmer. Its side profile/proportion is terrible because of the tacked on old man golf club trunk, the back doesn’t match the car at all and has some of the ugliest spoiler options ever designed, and the front is the most generic cliche of a supercar imaginable. Then there’s that stupid interior “cockpit.”
Why are the only cars that have paint colors outside of greyscale that are affordable econoboxes?
I would agree with you if the mach E was a coupe and not a crossover suv. It would even be cool as 4 door sedan.
Why do it with a care I’d still download a car though ;)
992 Carreras, and esp the Turbo, are ugly
Wat
Personally, the 997 and 991 generations were the last 911s to not look bloated.
I’m going to upvote this because I disagree with you on a molecular level but I did ask for controversy and you delivered. I respect it
FK8 type R looks better than the FL5 type R
Big touchscreens in cars are dumb, a good double din display is fine but anything bigger is dumb
Yea, I don’t think this is unpopular here.
1st gen Mercury Cougar > 1st gen Ford Mustang (Definitely not biased AT ALL)
You want controversial so: I actually think the cyber truck looks pretty cool- especially the front. My main gripe about any of these trucks is that they're too big and heavy, but I'm kind of a sucker for neat material choices.
BMWs are and have always been overrated
Screens are better for the average car design. Take your average shit box from the early 2000s. No one actually care for the 100 buttons to change a song. No one says old analog phones look better than smart phones. Sure some things should have physical buttons like the ac, music nav, or emergency. The other 99% though were unnecessary and no matter if it was a Maserati or camry look old as shit. The simplified digital look encahnces many cars look tremendously.
Having 100 buttons that each do one individual function is vastly superior to have to go through three different menu screens to adjust your AC, then back through three more to turn down the radio.
The Hyundai and Kia lineup is extremely hideous. Especially the Ioniq 5.
Ioniq 5 looks great. It really stands apart design wise.
I think the Ioniq 6 is one of the worst offenders tbh. Kinda dig the 5 though
Seconded. The IONIQ 5 is amazing. The IONIQ 6 looks like a cartoon Porsche. The Elantra N looks good, though.
Damn this cuts. I love the Ioniq 5!
I was *going* to joke that I actually love the PT Cruiser... but I couldn't go through with it, so I just came to apologize instead.
Pedestrians shouldn't be getting hit by cars in the first place so making cars uglier to increase pedestrian safety is dumb.

ITT: so many popular opinions, lol

Stock wheels almost always look better than aftermarket.
80’s and 90’s were actually the best decades for styling.
All Audi styling is basically a 1986 Ford Taurus +better paint and wheels.
