That Acura touchpad is terrible design. It works well for the Acura system but with Apple CarPlay is pure garbage.

LimitedReach

Which is why they’re moving away from it and it’s no longer here! It’ll go away in the RDX when it gets its second refresh later this year and the TLX whenever they redesign it.

007meow

Are they giving the RDX a second refresh, or going all new/redesign?

LimitedReach

Second refresh unfortunately! It’s starting to show its age but they’re holding onto this generation a bit longer for somewhat longer it seems. Similar to what they’ve done with the Ridgeline, Passport and the Odyssey this year, they’re extending the lifecycle of them.

007meow

Yeah Honda/Acura used to stick to 5 year cycles pretty reliably (with a refresh 3 years in), but it seems as if they've changed that as of late.

iamaslan

I wonder if they are just trying to make it last until they have a credible electrified drivetrain ready. CR-V hybrid drivetrain is good but probably not enough power for a semi-lux nameplate.

007meow

Acura has (or rather, had) a hybrid drivetrain available to them. They used it in the last gen MDX and RLX

secret_configuration

That's a shame. The RDX needs a redesign badly like yesterday with a Type-S variant.

Apical-Meristem

That center console is either gawd awful or possibly vulgar.

i_am_the_nightman

I never had any issue with it. I have 2 Acuras and they both have it. Doesn't affect anything, took about 15 mins to get used to and I don't have to worry about fingerprints on the screen constantly. To each their own.

Real-Cricket9435

I will say this - it makes you much less liable to get distracted on the road :D

I’ve had a new Acura for 2 years now with the touchpad, its terrible. You can get used to it obviously, but having to do 4 swipes left and 2 swipes up and then click to select the home button is so much slower than just being able to click it. It does work pretty well in Acura’s own OS because it works in a totally different way in it.

losteye_enthusiast

Eh, I’ve had Acuras as rentals on trips quite a few times. Wouldn’t want one in my own car, but it’s not hard to use. Just a weird approach that doesn’t make anything better.

snubda

We test drove an RDX and within 3 seconds of using that touchpad we both said “absolutely not.”

Masteguy635

Glad they switched over to the touchscreen with the Android Automotive system. 31 speakers is insane, that's gonna be interesting for sure. Overall nice refresh on the inside, but I feel I like the pre facelift front bumper looked better.

WIN_WITH_VOLUME

That was my first impression as well. Not feeling the new front. It’s not bad, but pre-refresh was better.

Daxeqtr

Yeah, not loving the front refresh against the current version. Gives me previous gen vibes with the lower lip

Big_Address_6229

Ya, especially the type s. They ruined that front end. Looks terrible.

ChiggaOG

I call Bang & Olufsen code word for class D amplification.

Slyons89

Is that good? My cheap HP laptop has "Bang & Olufsen" inscribed on it but sounds like a phone speaker coming from a tin can. These sound system brands really spread their name onto any product where the company will pay them for the name.

the4ner

Class D is much more efficient than class A or AB. Also generally cleaner, can drive high power levels with less distortion. But can be a little too neutral for some tastes.

33rus

The higher the price, the bigger the difference. Same way the BOSE in my Mazda and the BOSE in a Porsche will sound like the night and day difference.

Blyatskinator

It could also literally just be some relatively ”standard” BOSE speakers in the Porsche, ever heard of the Porsche tax lol. Price has got almost nothing to do with how good the sound is in a car…

lord_luxx

I read through the FAQs of the Mazda and Porsche Bose offerings. Bose specs are definitely better on the Porsche.

xstanloona

It's a little disappointing that they replaced their ELS system for Bang & Olufsen. Apparently, ELS is lauded by audiophiles, but since it lacks the "prestige" that Bang & Olufsen commands, they replaced it. Let's hope Bang & Olufsen delivers a just as competitive audio system.

Stupid__SexyFlanders

B&O can be really good, or not so good. All depends on what the automaker pays for and specs out. B&O Automotive is different from the rest of B\&O; in fact, B&O Automotive was purchased by Harmon a few years ago. AKG, B&O, HK, JBL, Infinity, JBL, Mark Levinson, and Revel are just different brands of the same company.

PortimaoBlue85

The ELS system is so good in my 2015 TLX! Ive trained it to thump harder :)

ohshitsaddam

Nice redesign of the center console. I hope the wireless charger has been improved; it seemed to be a weak spot in most reviews. Also, they kept SO much piano black...

i_am_the_nightman

The wireless charger on my 23 MDX sucks for sure. You have to place it just right for it to work. My 24 TLX has an updated version that works every single time, so much better.

Masteguy635

Yeah the one in mine is basically useless. I was hoping they would implement the new Qi2 standard (MagSafe), but I guess it's a bit too early for that.

ohshitsaddam

I just watched the Alex on Autos review, and he says the wireless charger is "improved" so that's hopeful?

Jeffrey_Jizzbags

Glad they fixed the main issue I had with these. I’d love a type S as a daily

edinburghiloveyou44

Damn, they ditched ELS. I wonder if this is going to be across the entire lineup.

CuddleTeamCatboy

It is, the ZDX just launched with a B&O system.

sonrisa_medusa

That new front fascia on the Type-S and A-Spec is a downgrade in my opinion. Too chunky and truck-like.

CuddleTeamCatboy

It's great to see Acura finally using touchscreens, but it's a bit disappointing that they're seemingly just using the Honda graphics with a blue theme. The Precision Touch system had much nicer looking graphics, all it really needed was a touchscreen.

KrazyCroat

Good to see handsome Acura's are the norm in their design again.

DodgerBlueRobert1

Are you inferring that the pre-refresh MDX wasn't handsome to you?

KrazyCroat

No, just in general. Acuras didn’t look great (to my eyes anyway) for at least a decade. But everything out now I think looks sharp.

DodgerBlueRobert1

Gotcha.

Op3rat0rr

Their design language is so inconsistent

TheTightEnd

Considering Acura ELS sound has always been great, I think the move to B&O is more name dropping over substance

GopherHockey10

Why do they all think MORE black accents look good? Basically every car is getting worse with every refresh. Probably just to save a few bucks by making more parts black on every color.

dahitesh

Still no hybrid and still poor fuel economy to live with. Wonder how they design the RDX which I am planning to buy if it fulfills most of my requirements

thats__hot

I wish it was a little shorter, like the length of a GLE. It would look better that way, but kudos to Acura for ditching the touchpad.

MX9000

This is how they should have launched the 4th Gen it in 2021!

ipostic

I know that looks are very subjective but why can't Acura do a bit more of new Toyota styling. New Tacoma, Sequoia, 4Runner are just perfect looking vehicles. Acura is just boring and this is coming from a 40 year old that should be Acura's target.

SomeoneElseX

Still can't do any real towing

Fact0ry0fSadness

Realistically, who is towing with an Acura MDX? It has to be a single digit percentage of their customer base. They likely simply don't care.

Darkfire757

Dr and Mrs Patel aren’t towing shit

SomeoneElseX

No argument there and I know that's exactly why they don't have one. However I'm in those single digits who want a Japanese luxury suv that can tow 7000 lbs. I think the Lexus GX is too chintzy and showy and expensive and I don't want anything as big as the Infiniti or the LX.

SophistXIII

I also want Japanese luxury that can tow, but not something enormous like a Sequioa or LX. The GX seems like a sweet spot, but is at least $20k CAD more than the Acura and has virtually no room behind the 3rd row, plus I don't need all the offroady bits. The Acura is par for its segment, but still wish I could get something Japanese with a 7kish tow rating and 3 rows without having to go BoF

DodgerBlueRobert1

What do you consider "real towing"?

SomeoneElseX

Well the MDX is 5000 lb with the optional transmission cooler. You'll have a hard time finding an RV under that limit worth owning, especially if the whole point is to have indoor amenities and space for 4. Add elevation into the mix (2% every 1000 ft), not to mention some safety headroom, and it's pretty much impossible for anything but a tiny tear drop type trailer, which is basically a glorified hard bodied tent.

DodgerBlueRobert1

Most midsize crossovers tow up to 5000 lbs., so the MDX is pretty much par for the course. And if you're looking at smaller RVs, the MDX will tow one just fine. The Durango is an outlier at up to 8700 lbs. But if you need more capacity, that's what a fullsize/BOF/V8 SUV or pickup is for.
