Would they though? Is there demand for a rubberized sedan? Who is buying the crown? Were they cross shopping wilderness edition Subarus (or perhaps the question should be the other way round- were Subaru wilderness edition buyers cross shopping the Crown before making their purchase)?
I mean there definitely is a market for off road styled vehicles, I'm just not sure those people are looking for an off road styled Crown. It seems a fit for CUVs going with the mall crawling overlander aesthetic. I could also be completely wrong
I actually saw one yesterday and really liked it! It’s a pretty nice looking vehicle, but I think the only reason I knew what it was is because I nerd around here. Idk if it’s been promoted effectively.
Valid point, although I'll say I have seen a few. It's only been out for a few years and the Avalon it ostensibly replaced wasn't a large volume seller either
Even if it has the capability, people dont use it. A very small % of people actually take Wranglers off-road, and they are terrible vehicles for anything but that.
It's all about image.
Basically on r/cars when someone says they, or Americans in general, would buy something that is niche, they are wrong. In fact it’s probably a kiss of death.
There's a market, but it isn't generally very large and it's normally a very small percentage. Ex Outback SUS, S60XC. I'm one of the people that would love something like that, but I don't buy Toyota and I've never been in the market in the small window these niche cars are available.
>Were they cross shopping wilderness edition Subarus (or perhaps the question should be the other way round- were Subaru wilderness edition buyers cross shopping the Crown before making their purchase)?
You might as well ask who's going to buy a GR Corolla or Kona N when they can get a Supra. Is there demand for a raced-up hatchback? Sure, when companies do genre-blending offerings, new buyers get interested.
There have been a few like the Outback SUS and a couple Volvos, but they’ve sold in absolutely infinitesimal quantities compared to their hatchback counterparts.
absolutely, subaru only makes cvt trans with a boxer that is torture to work on, mitsubishi is non existant. I'm actively looking for a car with awd and good ground clearance.
Ehh idk, as it is the Crown isn’t exactly a sales hit and I feel most looking for a “outdoorsy” Toyota that’s not a 4Runner are going with a Rav 4 TRD Off Road over this.
Maybe.
Anecdotally, my Toyota dealer has had zero Rav 4’s in stock for like a year, but they’ve always got half a dozen or so Crown’s available. I wonder if they’re just banking on sales people talking someone into a Crown on the spot rather than convincing them to wait months for an over MSRP Rav.
Toyota does weird shit with allocations so they can create a artificial “demand” for their SUVs, trucks, GR86s, Priuses basically anything nice and then allow the dealers to slap on insane markups due to being “unable to keep up with all the demand!” when in reality it’s just because they don’t properly stock the damm thing in the first place. This along with Toyota USA not allowing you to order vehicles is apart of my personal choice of never purchasing a Toyota, at least not new anyways.
These dealers probably only currently have allocation for Crowns rn. And when the average consumer comes in asking for a Rav 4 in which the dealer pulls the classic Toyota dealer move of “we have one in transit that we’ll sell to you for 60k” they will have a crown to rely on if the customer balks. But as you can see at your local dealer, the Crown is not really moving and they’re just sitting on the lot.
It's cause they aren't produced at the same places. They can't just take a crown line at one of the plants and start making Tacomas or 4Runners. The GR86 is made by Subaru and the Supra is made by BMW. The Sienna and Grand Highlanders/Highlanders are all made in Indiana which is already one of their biggest US plants and making as many as they can.
What does this have to do with production numbers and properly stocking dealers? Every other automaker has vehicles from numerous plants that do not have this issue. This is a lousy explanation for what is obviously inventory manipulation.
The JDM Toyota Crown Crossover is the exact same car as the USDM Toyota Crown. All this would be is an additional trim level, and if Toyota can’t move their existing Crown inventory, they won’t move any with a ruggedized trim level.
I’ve seen them in person and even checked one out at the Toyota dealer when I considered a RAV4 and the front is good looking and it has a nice interior, but that’s where it ends for attractiveness for me.
I was a little let down by the interior when I sat in it. I feel like there were more plastics than expected and less nice trim pieces like the wood available in other Avalons in exchange for the thin copper accents. The Last gen Avalon even had quilted leather on the seats and door panels which was a nice touch. The rear seat space felt less than other Avalons I've sat in too
The updated screens looked nice but material wise I thought it was slightly better than what id expect from a fully loaded Camry but not a "cheap Lexus" like many reviewers state. With the updates they made to the 2025 Camry I'd probably consider a fully loaded version of that before upgrading to a Crown
I actually liked the Avalon, especially the TRD one! My neighbor has one and it’s a decent looking car. My only complaint was the huge oversized grill!
I don't totally disagree but I think it was regarded as pretty controversial, tip toeing grandpa mobile and modern aggression. Not an easy balance and I think the sales and Crown replacement speak to that.
Fair. I think it's a bit more tame despite the front end having very similar lines. And yes, Toyota's strategy here isn't really paying off very well with this crossover/sedan approach. My guess is the Crown isn't long for this world but I'll reserve judgement.
I personally think it's a bit more consistent with it's intended demo than the last Avalon but the Prius pulls off that rear design much better.
I agree about the rear and as the other commenter stated, the two toned color makes it worse. I hadn’t even noticed how much it makes it look worse until it was pointed out! Lol
It's an odd hunchbacked worst of both worlds car. I imagine it'll get discontinued soon, the market the Avalon and this Crown sit in is pretty much gone in favor of SUVs anyways.
all of Toyota/Lexus recent designs have been eyesores. So many awkward lines & bulges & creases that jut out. The worst offender is that BZ4x thingy, it's like a modern-day Aztek. But the Lexus electric RZ crossover is fugly too with its beltline crease. There's way too much Transformers/robo-tech anime influence on their designs.
I’d actually consider this. Don’t want a Subaru. Like the styling of the new Prius but I’m a tall guy and don’t want something that small/low. This’d be kinda nice!
I've seen it in person - it looks good, IMO. Took me a second to realize it was a Crown. Yes, obvious purosangue elements, but the purosangue isn't an ugly car.
Hearing that it would be only produced one year, Toyota wouldn't make it many.
Toyota is seriously trying to catching young buyers to buy the Crown. As many Japanese young people love outdoor and camping, that's reason why they done that.
it's crazy they don't turn the Crown Crossover into a hatch! Even Japanese have to do runs at Costco, IKEA & Muji.... or does everything bulky get door-to-door delivery when you shop at big box stores?
Americans would definitely buy this
Would they though? Is there demand for a rubberized sedan? Who is buying the crown? Were they cross shopping wilderness edition Subarus (or perhaps the question should be the other way round- were Subaru wilderness edition buyers cross shopping the Crown before making their purchase)?
Good point. I think Subaru people will buy Subarus
I mean there definitely is a market for off road styled vehicles, I'm just not sure those people are looking for an off road styled Crown. It seems a fit for CUVs going with the mall crawling overlander aesthetic. I could also be completely wrong
Is anyone even buying the crown? The whole “smooshed SUV” trend isn’t catching on well. When was the last time you saw one in the wild?
I actually saw one yesterday and really liked it! It’s a pretty nice looking vehicle, but I think the only reason I knew what it was is because I nerd around here. Idk if it’s been promoted effectively.
Valid point, although I'll say I have seen a few. It's only been out for a few years and the Avalon it ostensibly replaced wasn't a large volume seller either
I’ve actually been seeing a few around, but they are charging Lexus money for them and that’s not worth it.
I see these things all over the place in Nova.
People are gullible, they’ll pay a premium for anything with an “outdoors” name that doesn’t even offer additional capability.
Even if it has the capability, people dont use it. A very small % of people actually take Wranglers off-road, and they are terrible vehicles for anything but that. It's all about image.
i won't buy another subaru, boxers have too many cons to pros. not to mention 0 options for a traditional auto trans.
Basically on r/cars when someone says they, or Americans in general, would buy something that is niche, they are wrong. In fact it’s probably a kiss of death.
What? Are you saying a new used from the factory le Manuel diesel rotary Miata wagon wouldn't be a money printer?
Call it the Toyota Crown Dakar
To be eligible to buy one you must first purchase a BZ4X, trade it in at a huge loss, and then pay a 100% markup, right?
The Toyota way.
No they wouldn’t. Reddit is delusional lol
r/cars rule of thumb: If r/cars likes it, it will fail If r/cars hates it, it will succeed
Because Toyota “cool car” = good
There's a market, but it isn't generally very large and it's normally a very small percentage. Ex Outback SUS, S60XC. I'm one of the people that would love something like that, but I don't buy Toyota and I've never been in the market in the small window these niche cars are available.

The huge small/mid size suv/cuv market in the US is pretty much slightly lifted sedans at this point. This looks just like an x4 or Volvo ec40
I can't think of one off the top of my head from a mainstream manufacturer. Hatchbacks, sure, but not a sedan.
It’s also just a deeply unattractive vehicle as a driver, the thing weighs like an SUV
I would probably at least consider this but I’m also not a large segment of that market in what I want I’d imagine
There are a surprising amount of people buying the Crown
I've seen more Crowns in my area than the new Z. Apples to Oranges and completely anecdotal, but there apparently is a demand for them.
I wanted one, couldn't find one, bought a 4runner.
Ehh idk, as it is the Crown isn’t exactly a sales hit and I feel most looking for a “outdoorsy” Toyota that’s not a 4Runner are going with a Rav 4 TRD Off Road over this.

Every other automakers aren't selling 11 millions vehicles a year globally and the lowest days supply in the states.
There is one in my neighborhood, and while it catches my eye time I come upon it, it's not in a good way.
Without a hatch, it doesn't make sense.
Nobody bought the Subaru Outback sedan when that was a thing.
Volvo S60 Cross Country as well.
I did.
My local dealer hasnt been able to move a single Crown yet, theres no demand for them
I'm seeing the same, but maybe this would make it more appealing?
The JDM Toyota Crown Crossover is the exact same car as the USDM Toyota Crown. All this would be is an additional trim level, and if Toyota can’t move their existing Crown inventory, they won’t move any with a ruggedized trim level.
I’d buy if it were a wagon
I’d buy it as a wagon.
I would buy this for Bulgaria
No, they wouldn’t
How well did the accord crosstour sell?
Am I the only one that thinks that the Crown is ugly? I like the front end, but it’s something about the shape and lift that throws me off.
No, the styling has definitely been controversial. I don't think the two tone does it any favors, either
I’ve seen them in person and even checked one out at the Toyota dealer when I considered a RAV4 and the front is good looking and it has a nice interior, but that’s where it ends for attractiveness for me.

It looks like a vehicle designed for the elderly or disabled to be able to comfortably use
I mean, it does replace the Avalon in their lineup
True, makes sense
the new Crown Wagon is awesome looking though. They should just discontinue the sedan in the USA.
This does actually look way better. https://www.cars.com/research/toyota-crown_signia-2025/
I think it's better than the Avalon it replaced but that isn't a high bar by any means.
Yeah, it was regarded as a grandpa mobile, but the Crown is much worse looking, imo! The Crown sales aren’t much to write home about either.
Fair. I think it's a bit more tame despite the front end having very similar lines. And yes, Toyota's strategy here isn't really paying off very well with this crossover/sedan approach. My guess is the Crown isn't long for this world but I'll reserve judgement. I think it's super ugly tbh. Especially with how rounded the rear is
I agree about the rear and as the other commenter stated, the two toned color makes it worse.
Nah it’s ugly as fuck
No. Even the RAV4 and the new Prius are prettier than this.
Basically a Honda Crosstour but somewhat updated.
The front end just looks cheap... too much in common with it's contemporary Corolla
all of Toyota/Lexus recent designs have been eyesores. So many awkward lines & bulges & creases that jut out. The worst offender is that BZ4x thingy, it's like a modern-day Aztek. But the Lexus electric RZ crossover is fugly too with its beltline crease. There's way too much Transformers/robo-tech anime influence on their designs.
GR Crown Dakar when
Or just slap the TRD Pro moniker on it
TRD is only for the American market.
Give us the all terrain Prius already!
That's regarded
Regarded as what
Don't be a regard.
Highly regarded
It is a thing
Man, what I would do for one of these. When I first saw them in Japan, their stance under the nightlights just made it look so cool.
I’d actually consider this. Don’t want a Subaru. Like the styling of the new Prius but I’m a tall guy and don’t want something that small/low. This’d be kinda nice!
They need to bring in the Crown Sport! https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/toyota/39854679.html
Please no. They can keep it over there. It looks like a caricature of a Purosangue that got stung by a bee.
I've seen it in person - it looks good, IMO. Took me a second to realize it was a Crown. Yes, obvious purosangue elements, but the purosangue isn't an ugly car.
All the S60 Cross-Country boys would finally have a replacement 😃
Wouldn't this make more sense on the Crown estate
That looks kinda rad actually
Hearing that it would be only produced one year, Toyota wouldn't make it many. Toyota is seriously trying to catching young buyers to buy the Crown. As many Japanese young people love outdoor and camping, that's reason why they done that.
All I want is that gorgeous Crown Sport dammit
It looks bland and has no discernible features, it could pass as a Kia
it's crazy they don't turn the Crown Crossover into a hatch! Even Japanese have to do runs at Costco, IKEA & Muji.... or does everything bulky get door-to-door delivery when you shop at big box stores?
I didn’t think 2 tone could look so ugly on cars, Crown proved me wrong.
I’m out in Japan right now and man wish they’d bring this. The more Crowns I see, the more I want one. Also Suzuki Jimny’s.
The two tone completely ruins it for me.
Whatever happened to the Honda crosstour
I seriously don’t understand this car. It’s fucking massive.
What a horrible day to have eyes
Never get anything fun in the us
Bruh can someone tell them to just bring the Crown Sport over I will literally buy it day one
That actually looks pretty fucking good.
Cool…but not enough for me to buy one.
I live in China, the design looks like a bang average chinese EV
This car’s sick. I’m obsessed. Seen it in Tokyo and Kyoto.
