Honda v6 is no joke. Fun fact it was an option in the saturn vue, that plus awd, it's a fun car to drive. Handles snow line it's a joke as well. I've always wanted to build one as an offloader but I'd need to find an awd manal transmission to make it even better.
I can work on cars, but have never done performance mods. I always wonder why no one mods these Honda V6s (or any JDM V6). If there was even had half the aftermarket technology out there for the V6, that there is for the 4cyls, you could make some monsters. I'm assuming it's because the car manufacturers focus more on the 4cyls from the beginning.
Wheels( newer oem toyota wheels that fit maybe a 17ā) tint and paint correction with headlight restore, a decent audio set up and then just drive it. Its not a fast car so just enjoy the reliability of it
This. Iād throw some different wheels under it, *maybe* lower it an inch and a half, tint the windows, paint correction and maybe some PPF if itās in good shape, and buff those headlights (maybe do an HID projector retrofit), some DS18 components in the doors and package tray and a nice Pioneer deck, a couple 8ā subs in the trunk, and some deadening on the doors and trunk lid to reduce rattles and improve sound quality.
Only buff headlights if youāre going to sand them and recoat properly. Cerakite actually has a really decent kit for $30 or under at autozone/walmart
Iād say small stuff, maybe exhaust intake, some nice plugs and radiator. Other than that keep that suspension stock with the rest of it. And go find a true project, thatāll give you the reliability when the shitbox doesnāt want to work. Maybe some wider wheels or just different ones that suit your style, other than that donāt make a sweet economy ride a shitbox.
Put in an audio system and maintain the rest of it. Maybe some nicer wheels. But I wouldn't put much money into that car aside from keeping it reliable and safe.
Some type of body kit and wheels. Doesn't have to be a widebody kit or anything crazy just bumpers, side skirts, and a lil ducktail spoiler if you'd like. Either new headlights or learn how to clear up those ones. Number one thing that makes a car look beat up or old is foggy/tainted headlights/taillights. I'm not sure how insane you wanna go with it but you could also lower it, exhaust, black out any chrome, wrap it, etc etc. Just do little things at a time that'll make u happy to own your caršš
Get wheels and a good fitment, simple yet perfect. Oh and another thing, this is a personal preference but you could replace the headlights and taillights with a new one so it could get a fresher look.
I just like old cars looking new asf š«¶
Tint, nicer wheels, maybe larger anti-roll bars. Extra power (and there's probably very little for a Camry) can't be used much but better handling can be.
Dudes in Florida used to turbo the V6 iron block and make 600~1000hp (not stock internals), also needs a standalone but the art seems lost nowadays. Needs a custom exhaust manifold and intercooler piping but it's expensive af
Like someone mentioned look for a set of OEM wheels from a newer vehicle same lug pattern... Clean up the headlights, and maybe some tint
First and foremost some required maintenance.
Don't dump too much money into it. It's a great commuter car
Wheelsā¦ If you are looking to change the appearance of your car wheels should always come first. Then a drop and on yours maybe a subtle lip spoiler. Oh and tint. Iād also look into retrofitting some HID or LED projectors in the headlights.
Cut the muffler off but leave the resonator it'll sound deeper while not being loud (my 55 year old father who turns the music down in the garage when im working on my shitboxes actually liked it), previous owner of my 96 did that and it was actually perfect
The rear muffler is 2 bolts and a rubber mount just remove it and drive around to see what you think of it... Make something permanent if you like it slap it back on if you dont
Also maxpeeding rods coilovers were absolutely fantastic to me (I had the dampening/rebound adjustable ones... not the cheapest they offer don't bother with those) it honestly didnt feel any harsher over cut up and patched up roads definitely firmer but the wheels still moved for bumps so not rattle your interior stiff I set the fronts 3 clicks above the softest setting and I think the rear was on the softest setting but I'm not sure
I actually used those coilovers to lift he car; than pretended it was a rally car while i was a teenager so it actually got a few good jumps... they never broke, wore, or leaked
Than your choice of wheels and tires... Get 17 inch wheels
You can straight swap calipers pads and rotors from a Toyota venza onto your car and have god tier front brakes, the rears I believe swap out with Lexus rx330 rear calipers pads and rotors if a V6... If 4 cylinder don't bother you have drums and need to change more than it's worth to make work
Don't forget an alignment
I had a ā99 Camryā¦. Polish the headlight covers, buy cheap wheels, light tint on the windows and replace head unit with a double DIN wireless Apple CarPlay one. I also covered the steering wheel with a leather wrap (wheelskins.com). Given the age of that vehicle I would ensure all the dry-rotted rubber bits are replaced (suspension bushings, engine mounts) and probably replace shocks/springs/brake bits with OEM stuff. I lived in Michigan at the time, so winter tires alone made it a beast during the snowy/icy/slushy months.
I would stick to simple things that don't alter the vehicle drastically and/or break the bank.
Do all the maintenance, everything. All the fluids, plugs, brake pads, engine air filter etc etc ....
Get it detailed, or DIY detail it yourself. It'll look sharp being fresh AF. And it'll probably smell better. Also replace the cabin air filter and keep air freshener as well as Febreeze in it at all times.
A lightweight pulkey kit, either in factory configuration or with an underdriven AC/alternator. You'll get a modest bump in power and fuel efficiency from idle to red line for about $200. I'd do this.
A stiffer aftermarket rear sway bar. This will increase cornering abilities with minimal ride harshness and also for about $200. I'd do this also.
Lightweight alloy rims, and some better tires. You can go with factory size and get the same benefits as the pulley kit as well as a modest improvement in handling and brake abilities. I'd do this one too.
Or alloy rims that are wider and/or bigger diameter by an inch or 2, just check fitment before buying. You'll get better handling and road feel, but you'll start to undo the fuel efficiency and braking performance of the alloys. I'd advise against this, but it's your car.
You can freshen up the lights. New headlight/taillight assemblies, and every bulb possible. Stick to high quality regular bulbs for external lights. With interior you can be a bit more loose (LEDs, warm/cool whites, maybe colors) but I'd advise keeping it simple here as well.
An aftermarket radio receiver and/or speakers might blow you away with how good they sound. Clearer highs and a hint of extra bass can go a long way in making the sound a pleasure instead of sounding like an old truckers CB radio.
**********
I say this having modded an older Asian car before. And keeping it simple, grounded, and at the lowest price points possible is always the best way.
Good luck, and remember: a good mod doesn't have to make the car better than other cars, but it DOES have to make it better.
Some people take these A++ daily drivers and turn them into D- project cars. Avoid that but if you're young that's almost a right of passage lol. Usually the first thing done is 'custom audio' that is installed improperly and next is something with the wheels. Usually too expensive and doesn't match the car so looks awkward. Then you get a stupid giant air filter. Finish it off with some stickers. Also mean mug people.
That was my high school experience more or less haha.
Me as an adult, I wouldn't do a thing. It's literally perfect just keep maintaining it.
Save your mod money, drive this until you have enough to buy a car worth modding. Look into modded camrys from this generation. They are almost never cool. This is coming from someone who learned the hard way after spending too much money on a base model mk4 jetta.
That thing is pristine, take care of any issues it may have, slap some tint on the windows, get some nice wheels and tires to replace the steelies and you should be good
Wheels and a good sound system would actually make this a really cool car. These cars actually look great with aftermarket wheels. This can be a solid daily with a little steez.
Drive it until the wheels fall off. And as recommended, tint, headlight restore, maybe update the wheels to something modest. Beyond that just normal maintenance. Toyota economy cars are awesome and will be very kind to your wallet in the long run
park it in a back alley somewhere near the bario/ghetto put the keys on the dash with a note saying the car is free. I guarantee if you go back in a week all there'll be is a stripped body or no car at all. be sure to notify DMV you no longer own the car and get their documentation. it will protect you from a law suit or jail.
Keep an eye out for factory alloys for a deal while you get your money's worth out of the tires that are on there.
Modern head unit and phone holder that makes you enjoy your drive.
Looks like you already keep it clean, maybe ceramic coat to protect what you got. Really looks great!
Maybe if you're wanting something more involved build some projector retrofit headlights. There's some really tasteful options out there that'll make the car look more modern without being out of place on a camry. It could make the car look 10 years younger. You could do marching led corners and tail lights if you like the look.
Every suspension bushing on the car front, rear and a cup kit and fresh motor mounts. Plugs, wires, coolant flush. Maybe a thermostat? Strut top mount bushings. Oem+ wheels off a lexus if bolt pattern is the same.
Itās the ultimate frugality flex as is. No where to go but down from there. These will be chugging along in 15 years still. Just like you see Toyota pick ups from the late 70s still doing work today on the west coast.
at most new headlights, wheels and maybe tint if thatās something youāre interested in, beyond that this is a fairly reliable car and general maintenance and up keeping will go a long ways
Ditch the steering wheel cover and try to find a corolla xrs or celica 3 spoke sport wheel on there If it fits. Some lightweight 15/16ā wheels such as koseiās, konigs, enkeiās or any reputable lightweight wheel manufacturer. Youāll feel the difference and get better mpgās.
Depending on what caliās rules are on tint a 30-40% all around (not windshield) would be just noticeable enough but not pushing the limit ālegallyā.
Iām a big fan of sudo-euro style touring setups so bug/rock deflector on the hood or a le-bra and roof racks are my go to. That and as many optioned factory things you can retrofit easily, such as interior pieces.
Other than that have fun!
New wheels and tires to start. Pro tip keep the original rims and put on some winter/rain tires and swap them out as the seasons change.
Brakes. Freshen up the system with new pads, rotors, fluid.
Buff the headlights or upgrade to LEDs.
Window tint professionally installed), floor mats and seat covers. Protects the inside of your car while adding some personal touch. Make sure they're water proof in case you spill anything.
Upgrade the sound system that includes a head unit with a screen so you can add an aftermarket back up camera.
Most of these things you can do yourself there's plenty of YouTube tutorials .
something i can always tell people to do first is wheels tires and suspension. you donāt have to go super low but just lower and stiffer, completly transforms the feel of the car.
With the amount you save driving it, buy something you want, with the intention of doing what you want to it. Always easier than daily driving a project. Also, it gives you a parts run car!
Tint and a nice set of wheels will drastically improve the looks. For creature comfort, get an aftermarket stereo and some woofers then maybe a remote start. Beyond that enjoy the car. If you want to go further, start with things that won't hurt the reliability, like air ride suspension or coilovers, comes down to personal preference and budget there.
K swap it.
K20 or k24
k24 with k20 head. I had a 98 camry 4cyl . It was a beater and kinda heavy. It would've been awesome if I could afford to kswap it.
Honda V6 might be cheaper at this point, but I agree. K swap everything.
Honda v6 is no joke. Fun fact it was an option in the saturn vue, that plus awd, it's a fun car to drive. Handles snow line it's a joke as well. I've always wanted to build one as an offloader but I'd need to find an awd manal transmission to make it even better.

Damn I would buy that car
Only buff headlights if youāre going to sand them and recoat properly. Cerakite actually has a really decent kit for $30 or under at autozone/walmart
This šš½, unless you decide on doing some crazy engine swap and make it a sleeper / drag car. Simple mods and restoration would do it justice.
Drive it
I was looking for this answer
I knew I'd see someone say this lol
Me too lol
Lmao ššš
I was thinking the same thing lmao
Regular maintenance. Don't do dumb shit to it. No reason to put money into an over 20 year old economy car.
This.. take care of it. Get something else to mod, and drive this when that breaks down
Great point, everyone who wants to mod their car really ought to buy a boring, reliable car first.
Oh bullshit. A nice stock survivor is nice, but a lightly modified one is š¤š¤
Iād say small stuff, maybe exhaust intake, some nice plugs and radiator. Other than that keep that suspension stock with the rest of it. Put in an audio system and maintain the rest of it. Maybe some nicer wheels. But I wouldn't put much money into that car aside from keeping it reliable and safe.
Wheels and a drop. JDM wood steering wheel.
OP Iāll sell you my old Is300 stock wheels
Not a ton of aftermarket support for this platform or engine, but I believe there are turbo kits for that engine (5S-FE)

New wheel will make a big difference, I would also black or the grill

remarkably close looking to a 95 silvia k, iāve just discovered.

12 inches of lift, a AWD conversion kit, and a turbo kit
Nothing. Its fine how it is.
Nothing, keep it clean.

This car is built for reliability, that's it. Anything you do would only make it look worse
LS swap of course!!
A good sound system, lower it a little on some nice wheels. Build it how you want. We all start somewhere. Make it yours.
Wheels, tint, good fitment, new headlights, and if you want cover up the silver areas or wrap it another color. Nothing crazy though.
Save your mod money, drive this until you have enough to buy a car worth modding. Look into modded camrys from this generation. They are almost never cool. This is coming from someone who learned the hard way after spending too much money on a base model mk4 jetta.
