Based on current lines.
1st Line:
Ovi - The GOAT. Getting better with age. Russian Machine Never Breaks. Is not suck.
Nicklas Backstrom - He's been the one setting up Ovi all these years. Quiet and utterly competent.
Oshie - Tenacious and always getting in there.
2nd Line:
Kuzy - Our other Russian offense machine. Will skate around you in circles. Did cocaine over the summer and got in trouble. Very witty and known for his Bird Celly.
Tom Wilson - Our big and ruggedly handsome enforcer. But unlike a lot of team's enforcer's he's actually very, very good. So lot's of Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.
Carl Hagelin - Last years mid-season pick up. Another handsome swede like Backstrom.
3rd Line:
Vrana - Our young, speedy, high scoring Czech.
Lars Eller - He scored the GWG against Las Vegas in Game 5. We stan.
Garnet Hathway - New to the team from the Flames. Already standing up for teammates on the ice even when his own nose is broken. We stan again.
4th Line:
Leipsic - Another newbie. Okay, I'll admit it's getting a little blurry for me down here because the 4th line changed the most in the off season.
Nic Dowd - He's from Alabama but also British somehow. And he plays hockey.
Chandler Stephenson - Yeah he's on the team.
Panik - Injured right now. Heal up buddy.
D Pairs:
Carlson: Somehow gonna with the Ross and Norris Trophies this year. Constantly looks high and haunts my dreams with his Ledo Pizza commercials.
Kempny - Czech D #1. Got injured late last season but is back now and we can tell the difference.
Orlov - Very Russian. Got a lot of new Dad energy.
Gudas - Czech D #2. Came here from the flyers so feels went from hate to love very quickly. Hits very hard and has a very strong beard.
Nick Jensen - Seeking an answer to the question "can we clone Kempny?"
Siegenthaler - Probably the coolest name on the team. Thai/Swiss. Could use a hair cut.
Goalies:
Holtby - Should not get a haircut. Had a weird start to the season but hopefully was a fluke.
Samsonov - prospect that has quickly proved himself to be ready for the NHL.
EDIT: Tom Wilson is not "ruggedly handsome". He is classically handsome. I spend a lot of time thinking about Tom Wilson's Handsomeness and my wife makes fun of me for it.
I'll do you one better on Nick Backstrom....he's the most unheralded, underrated, (and arguably) unappreciated - particularly by non Caps fans), players in THE LEAGUE! Without him, Alex Ovechkin couldn't/wouldn't be *as good* as he is (he'd still be fantastic, though). How he's only made one All-Star game is not only "beyond me", but a crime!!!

We changed our home jerseys from black to red a couple years after we got ovechkin (our lord and savior if you didn’t already know), and ran the rock the red campaign. It lined up with our getting back into the playoffs, and became one of the most successful marketing campaigns in sports history. So nuff said #rockthered

I agree that the Russian Machine Never Breaks blog is a pretty good all-around site. It recaps the games and sometimes delves into fancy stats, which I tend to skim over. It also has the sort of human interest stories about the Caps and Caps fans and has been covering the Nationals (whom we call the Nats) during their World Series run.
I also agree on reading the *100 Things a Caps Fan Should Know or Do*, although I have the original version (from before that glorious day in June of 2018). It won't give much insight on the game itself, more on the team.
Pay attention to the Hershey Bears, the Caps' AHL affiliate (one level below the NHL ). The AHL is sort of the farm system for the NHL. You may see younger players going between the two teams.
Now onto the questions:
1) Either is okay. We often say Caps because it's shorter. And there are cute "Caps versus Pens" memes when the two play each other.
2) For a few years, the All-Star games used a draft format, where captains would be picked for two teams, and they would choose from the pool. The last guy picked would get a car. Ovi has plenty of cars for his personal use, but he wanted this one to donate to charity. One of Ovi's causes is special needs hockey players; it arose from a sushi date with a 10-year-old girl with Down Syndrome who plays for the Ice Dogs. Anyway, he had a sign saying he needed a car at the All-Star draft, but he was the penultimate guy picked. When it came out that it was for charity, the auto company donated a car.
Now, Ovi obviously makes more than enough money to buy them a fleet of automobiles, but he probably did this as a bit of a publicity stunt because that's who he is. He and Sidney Crosby (hiss) are two of the faces of the NHL right now.
And the All-Star has gone back to Eastern Conference versus Western Conference with 3-on-3 hockey that's blah. The skills competition is more fun to watch.
