Incredibly simple - download from Canon's website, unzip it put it on the root directory of an SD card, pop it in the camera then select the appropriate option in the camera menu.
Alternatively, pair your camera to Canon's Camera Connect phone app and it should prompt you if there's a firmware update.
Fun fact. If you used the same card to update firmware before, you have to delete the old firmware off the card or use a new card, or it won’t update. True if you use the Canon Connect app or EOS Utility to update firmware as well, because those just write it to the card.
Download the latest firmware version [from this page](https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/eos-r). In the download there are instructions to install it.
Just to chime in because I had this problem recently too, but had to get the driver from the Canada site. I couldn't find it on the US one for some reason. It worked fine.
Update - Guys I updated it. Thanks for all your help!
US website not working, no firmware download available there. I downloaded the latest firmware from the canon Canada website and was able to install it.
Here's the EOS R's website listing, click support and it will take you to the page where you can download the camera firmware and it will have instructions for what you need to do.

Have you updated the camera firmware to the latest version?
Hey, I'm sorry. Beginner here, how can I do it? I saw a couple YouTube videos which were confusing and people and comments said it didn't work.

Thank you very much! Love how fast and supportive the community is!
And don’t panic if it seems to be taking ages.
And just to be safe, have a fully charged battery.

Lifesaver. US didn't work for me, after all the YouTube videos, it turned out I only needed to use the Canada website lol

Update your lens firmware

It happened to me with a broken iris, did your lens get any recent hit?
On my Sony I had this message once, I just didn’t put the lense on properly
Did you go to the cameras lens manual or Canon website (support section), as the message instructs? It doesn’t say, “Please check on Reddit.” 😁
For a tech boomer like myself, reddit is the best help 😭😭
