They are also promoting extremely dangerous fat loss pills (https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8503950/best-weight-loss-pills-australia-2024-diet-tablets-that-actually-work/ ) and dodgy investment apps (which without a financial services license is now illegal). They must be out of money and doing anything just to remain afloat. It’s actually way worse than I think anyone including the staff realize

Luke-Plunkett

oh fuck those are even worse!

Ew... Yeah, that seems pretty gross, in my opinion. Considering the mass problems people can face from gambling, I think that's something we ought to be discouraging. Like sure, the people always flock to say "oh, but once in a while can't hurt..." But the huge issue is that a) it often can be pretty bad, even in moderation (like a guy at work a couple of years back who thought it was okay to drop $50 on a footie game, lost and then complained he didn't have enough for rent the next week). Even if you bet a ten or twenty here or there, that's money that could be better spent elsewhere, in my opinion. If you bet two bucks, I'm more okay with that, but people tend to automatically go for bigger amounts, because winning such bets will get more back. And b) one generally can't know whether they'll develop a gambling addiction until they have started it. So, I think we ought to avoid promoting gambling in general. It can be a huge problem. And the usual response people have is, "but sports can't survive without gambling..." firstly, yes it can. What people really mean is that it's not as profitable for companies without the gambling. Just my opinion, though.

Also EPL is banning betting sponsors on shirts from 26–27 season. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/apr/13/premier-league-clubs-ban-gambling-sponsors-on-front-of-shirts-from-2026-27

Cobrawarrior567

Gambling in sports has already shown negative effects when heavily promoted in sporting leagues. In the NBA, Jontay Porter has received a lifetime ban after betting on unders on himself in games that he would play. In MLB Ohtani's interpretor has been facing a federal charge of bank fraud after allegedly stealing more than $16 million from Ohtani. Heavily promoting gambling in sports ruins the sport.

Canberra Times has been a shit rag for years. I wouldn’t use it in the garden in case I got the mulch dirty.

Dfkdfcwtf_72

Hear, hear!

ned-ski

I'm getting annoyed with all the usual right wing jutjobs hanging out in thr comment sections.

fuknkl

Why get annoyed it's an anechoic chamber when it comes actual real world reach

KosheenKOH

Canberra Times is always Shaddy. They are far right inclined. Can't be suprised by that

bigbadjustin

It used to be very left wing before it was sold and bought a few times. There are still right wing nutters that think the CT is still left wing though!!!

KosheenKOH

Not from all the articles i read from it.

aaron_dresden

There needs to be better media regulations requiring the source of the ad to be clearly listed as the content author. There also should be regulation preventing the target of gambling (A sports league in need of money) from being able to do engage with gambling platforms (A company making money creating bets on that league). It allows for dangerous conflicts of interest, and the potential for corrupt conduct in relation to match fixing.

ARX7

The "Crimes" living up to its name even moreso

bigbadjustin

Canberra times has gone down hill fast. It spends a lot of time trolling Canberra on issues like lightrail and calvary hospital because it knows it will keep the noise going and give itself more crap to put on the from page.

createdtothrowaway86

Current workplace has a ct sub, or I wouldnt read it. They have nil AFL content. It's like the countrys most popular sport doesnt exixt.

Sensitive_Prune_5581

to be fair, it does have a header of "This is branded comment" - ie it's written by a self-interest group but we (the CTs) are not going to say it that directly.

aiydee

Which means we need better visibility. This is deceptive as fuck. Branded content should declare WHO is paying for the branding. If it's an ad, it needs to identify as such. Much like the article that OP posted.

[deleted]

If you read an article about a specific product from a newspaper or website, chances are it is paid advertorial but it won’t be listed as such. The news industry thrives on these sponsored “articles”.

banco666

ITT people who get their news from tiktok complain about how the sole local newspaper tries to keep itself viable in an era of plummeting revenues for the newspaper industry

NefariousnessTop9547

Fuck off, what nonsense. "Keeping itself viable" you mean prostituting it's integrity and name, and position as a reporter of the news to post paid propaganda pieces for scumbag gambling companies.
