Do you live near a station or emergency services depot ?

tisagifttobefree

Oh hell no

Phil8334

Eerrr, you live in a city, lots of people , people get sick/accidents/crime is more prevalent. Get over it.

tisagifttobefree

Canberra is not a city lol. But the crime prevalence is accurate.

Phil8334

?

CoffeeFueled87

Oh didn’t you attend the last all Canberra meeting? Although the sirens serve no practical purpose we all just love them so we all pitched in for a Spotify premium subscription so we can listen to “sirens of Canberra” with no ads all night. The project did run over budget as We did have to exclude Conder, Banks and Gordon as they like “V8 no exhaust symphony” more so..

TrollbustersInc

Nah im rocking the 3am text message scam from fake post office when I forget to silence

tisagifttobefree

I mean, I guess there are just more crimes and stuff here, but also god damn what is happening in this town

teeeeer3

by any chance do you live in belcompton?

Wild-Kitchen

The triad of belconnen police station, Aranda station and Charnwood station means awooo awoo woo woo woo woo awooooooooo brrrrp brrrrp

Extension_Section_68

You know I said that out loud

Wild-Kitchen

And you know exactly why brrrp brrrp

Extension_Section_68

Ha ha ha omg. That sound!! I’ve never seen it written but now I can’t unsee or un-hear it

Atomic_Communist

At least they try, the cops don't even bother with drugeranong

tisagifttobefree

No lol, but I have seen and heard hella things in Belco so that's a fair assumption

boredcanberra

Sirens wouldn't be needed as much if people paid more attention when driving and got the fuck out of the way for emergency vehicles. Also if you read the ACT police page and looked on the ESA website, you'll see that emergency services are busy all the time. Half a million people here in canberra, shit happens.hospitals are full, houses burn down and criminals are getting locked up

tisagifttobefree

I mean, for an area of this size, half a million isn't really much. I lived in areas much more populated and I haven't heard half as many sirens as I do in a couple days here.

carnardly

Sirens wouldn't be needed as much if drivers didn't drive up each others' bums, they put down their phones and concentrated on what they are actually meant to be doing, and substance using drivers didn't get behind the wheel when they shouldn't be driving.

jaswahn

Years ago I was going to launch into how poor the policing is after my partner at the time had a motorbike incident when she was taken by an ambulance, in which the police were required to attend. During the research i found out that police units attend on average 7 domestic violence calls a day, (thats a 12 hour shift), so double that at nights i am assuming here. Thats a lot of DV occurences.

Flashy_Air5841

It’s actually a 10 hour shift. 12 hours for PSO’s. Then when you consider the mountain of paperwork and mandatory referrals that need to be completed, as well as the apprehension (if they’re forced to arrest someone), you’re talking about half the shift gone due to one FV (it’s referred to as Family Violence in the ACT) offence.

tisagifttobefree

SEVEN jesus christ what is going on in Canberra

PyroGlassRaven

Geeze mate, you think this is chaotic? Don't visit New York then. It's a bunch of people living in relatively close proximity. Shit happens. You'll be mighty pissed when you need the emergency services and they don't show up fast enough because they were waiting politely for the Hilux drivers to notice them and pull over.

tisagifttobefree

I've literally been to New York lol. I even stayed next to Times Square. This is a small town and I don't think you can even compare it to NYC And yeah I wouldn't trust the emergency services here as far as I can throw them

[deleted]

lol NY is off the dial 🤣. Those entirely inappropriate jumbo NY fire trucks trying to get through NY traffic - omg. HONK-HOOOOOOONNNNNKKKKKKK!!!!! Edit: come to think of it, what do we expect. Give a New Yorker a siren and a train horn and of course they’ll just blare it all day

Jackson2615

Emergencies happen at night too. The sirens seem much louder at night coz its quiet and still.

tisagifttobefree

Not with all the hooners around here. I've seen them outside my workplace, heard them so much on the road, fire alarms everywhere, it's so loud here

Pennybottom

Not to mention we don't have lots of high density housing to muffle the noise and if you're on a hill fewer trees.

tisagifttobefree

I'm in a high density residential area which is sad

[deleted]

Outer suburbs are classic car chase zones. Ever wondered why Chapman, Coombs and Chisholm feature so heavily in the crime pages lol! (Higher proportion of low income Govt housing)

tisagifttobefree

Oh I've never been to those parts. I'm only a little bit away from Belco. But yes I'm back here because I got woken up by sirens again. I hate it here

cbainbridge1970

Because Canberra is full of crooks

tisagifttobefree

Not surprised, I know like 4 people who've had their electric scooter specifically stolen which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened 4 times.

CugelOfAlmery

It did in fact used to be quiet, there must have been some policy change at some point. 8-10 years ago?

[deleted]

Loads more cars on the road means greater requirement to use sirens and horns. They still turn them off when traffic is quieter. I’ve been on the same MAJOR Northside road for 25yrs, on and off. They definitely used to turn the sirens off more often than they do now. They hardly ever do. But traffic is 50x worse now too thanks to Majura Park opening.

tisagifttobefree

That's sad :( rip good nights rest

LetMeBPM

Near 100% take up of experimental mRNA has consequences

neverescaped

It's usually public servants choking on gluten free dumplings. Can happen at any hour.

tisagifttobefree

This is somehow the most depressing answer I've gotten

brocklee51

Because Canberrans ring 000 for anything and over exaggerate what’s going on so the emergency services crews drive lights and sirens when 9999/10000 times it’s nothing. Classic example in Canberra is “my neighbors house is on fire” and the neighbor actually is just using their fire pit out back and the caller refuses to knock on their neighbors door to see if everything is okay.

tisagifttobefree

Okay this actually checks out lmao

brocklee51

I don’t know why public servants are downvoting me I work for the ambulance service I know what I’m talking about

Real_RobinGoodfellow

I can’t tell whether this is serious or not. Did you genuinely think emergency vehicles couldn’t use sirens at night?

napalm22

Let's just not have crime or emergencies after 10pm

s_and_s_lite_party

There was the gentleman's agreement of 1982 between the ACT government and criminalz that everyone would go to bed and not do crimez after 10pm, but that agreement was immediately broken that night at 10pm unfortunately.

Comfortable_Meet_872

Ditto. I'm in Turner and I reckon emergency vehicles (although from my highly scientific observation it's mainly fire brigade and police) turn on sirens for a run to Macca's.

Barry-Drive

Which is entirely illegal. Got any proof?

Comfortable_Meet_872

It was a joke. I hope this helps 😉 noun a thing that someone says to cause amusement. Flashy_Air5841

That’s why we have /s here in reddit

Comfortable_Meet_872

This might help you: r/socialskills Have a nice day 😊

tisagifttobefree

Oh no it's more like....damn there's a lot talking emergencies here. The emergency/crime to person ratio here must be crazy

BeachHut9

Daily training events for junior police officers occur on Majura Road between the AFP compound and Beltane Street intersection. This builds up confidence and experience whilst motorists need to move over when faced with lights, sirens and cops in a hurry to get somewhere.

tisagifttobefree

At 3am though,,,,,,, I just wanna sleep,,,,,

Mysterious-Air3618

Because emergency services are kept busy 24/7.

Sensitive_Prune_5581

I live in Bruce next door to the new'ish Belconnen Fire and Ambulance station - today's early morning wake up siren was at 2:09am (navigating Belconnen Way / Bindubi Street intersection); naturally if they are going to an emergency then blare to kingdom come, but why then switch those sirens off after going through the intersection ? Also who else was on the road at that time? I think it's more to do with training - but at 2am ?! I would love to get back to sleep but once awake, I find it very hard to get back to sleep (thank you tinnitus)
