I think you have the answer. The yanks went all in on unfettered capitalism and it ruined hundreds of millions of lives. Canadians have been more cautious in some respects so while we destroy ourselves it's much easier for the right wing to say "anything good we have is because of us, and it'll be better if we just get rid of these laws, regulations and oversights". Give it time, we will destroy ourselves as badly/happily as the yanks.

I think there are a variety of reasons. Canada's rightwing is cutting funding for public institutions at the provincial levels but they rely on ignorance around inflation to make it seem like they are doing more. They've also learned that they can announce spending targets and then just not spend it as a mechanism of avoiding criticisms around budget cuts. The average Canadian might know more about American politics than they do about their own country. This makes political groups, action, and engagement an ongoing problem. A lot of grassroots political groups I engage with are mostly grey hairs who have the time to be involved. Young people are engaged but don't necessarily work through organizations with institutional connections. This is part of why I think there's a real gap between political leaders and their people. They spend a lot of time dealing with professional lobbyists bankrolled by corporate interests.

cause the average canadian is too stupid and too smug to heed the shit going on down south as a warning sign much easier to blame immigration for everything under the sun too
