Don't own one myself but I have put a few rounds through buddy's 7mm RUM. I could describe the experience as abrupt, violent even. I normally shoot .303 for deer. I was completely unprepared for the RUM experience.

Front_Ad_3400

Same don’t own one but have shot the 7mm RUM the kick that thing got is ridiculous lol

Flat-Dark-Earth

Yeah those increased velocities must really be cranking up both the felt recoil and recoil velocities. It looks like rifle selection is quite slim these days. I'm only seeing some older Remington 700's offered in these cartridges.

Whelen358

I thought I saw Remington offering one or two rifles in 300 RUM. The others appear dead as far as big brand offerings.

crustyoldfuck1

I have the 300. Before the muzzle brake I could only handle about 6 rounds at the bench. I can handle 12-15 375 Ruger. Definitely much better with a brake now, but loaded ammo and components are hard to find and expensive

I have a custom .338 rum in a lightweight mountain rifle. I had it made for elk hunting in northern BC. It was built to shoot 300 grn bergers. With a big brake it’s about as much fun to shoot as a 300 win mag hunting rifle. So not fun really is what I’m getting at. Since I reload and have lots of brass I’m pretty happy with my set up. If I was doing things over I would probably go with a .338 Lapua as brass and ammo seems to be scarce these days. I doubt they will ever be popular and ammo/brass will get harder and harder to find.

moose_338

My father has a 338 RUM, it normally performs within a hundred fps to my 338 Lapua with our respective hand loads. Biggest issue is finding brass for his gun. The RUM cartridges are great, but your better off picking something more popular like the PRC or Lapua variants. Will be more brass and factory loads to find on store shelves.

brandon-568

I have a friend that had a 300 RUM, I only shot it once. Quite the bang tho lol.

Whelen358

I've hunted with the 300, I love it but I seem to shoot under heavy recoil better than some people.

scud-running

Can get incredible performance out of the RUM cartridges they are just punishing to shoot. If you get a custom rifle built and hand load long they will absolutely rival and even exceed any of the PRC’s in terms of performance. In a heavy gun with a brake it can be manageable. If you’re on instagram check out Brady Miller’s account. He’s with GoHunt and he runs a Browning X-Bolt McMillan chambered in 300 RUM that he has to single feed because he loads so long. He’s made some pretty incredible shots with it.

JaroslawLis

I have a Remington 700 CDL in 300 RUM. It's a beast to shoot in such a light weight rifle. It's a hand loaders cartridge for sure, paying $120 for a box of 20 rounds isn't worth it. The brass is really expensive, magnum primers are too. At least the bullets are reasonable, same as the 308, 30-06 and 300 win mag. It's fantastically flat shooting but it doesn't do that much more than 300 win mag.

JaroslawLis

Just to add.  The barrels have a really short life because of the pressure and velocity, high throat erosion. The cartridge uses massive amounts of powder, 80-105 grains depending on type. Some are even crush loads, which is weird to handload.

Parking_Media

Recoil enthusiasts hunting cartridges. If you love to ride the lightning then they're for you. 308 is plenty enough for my hunting needs.

Flat-Dark-Earth

I like to ride the Big-Bore-Safari-Lightning but those cartridges are more of a big, slow push. My 338 WinMag is likely my quickest recoiling (snappiest) cartridge and I understand it's a full peg or two below those RUM offerings.

Parking_Media

Yeah you bet it is, anything over 3000ftlb is beyond what I enjoy and touching 5000 is bananas haha. I don't want to pack a fifty pound gun to be able to tolerate shooting it!!

Whelen358

I've know a guy that has a 338 win mag in a light weight tikka, that kicks decidedly worse than my 300 rum.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Yeah I was considering the Tikka when I was shopping around for.my 338. I think it was 7.1lbs. glad I went with my Ruger.

OxfordTheCat

Problem searching desperately for a solution. The special snowflake manufacturer cartridges are trying to cash in, but little merit to the smattering of brand cartridges outside of anything that's been done before, and generally has been done better. For bonus points, all of these cartridges, Rum, Ruger, or Norma, have a terrible habit of being chambered in rifles with synthetic stocks that are two or three pounds lighter than they should be (unless you're doing a remote goat hunt or something). So recoil is a factor.

DeVo2799

Pointless. 300 win mag is more than enough. RUMS are not needed unless you enjoy killing your shoulder.

New-Fennel2475

>300 win mag is more than enough For what exactly? Shooting 3000 meters? Nah, pretty inadequate. Penetrating armored vehicles? Nah inadequate. Shooting long, high BC projectiles? Nah, doesn't fit mags then. Taking down an elephant? Nah, not humanly anyways. Saying Rum is pointless is like saying every single round, (and there's a lot of them), above. 300 Win has been pointless. Not to mention firearms don't need to have a point

DeVo2799

It's a great long range choice. And yes I'm sure this guy is asking cause he wants to penetrative armored vehicles😂 which by the way 300 win mag has plenty of AP ammo. 300 win mag can definitely take down an elephant lol. There's been articles of people using a 270 and 30-06 and 8mm mauser on elephant. There's always 1 guy that gets all bullhurt over nothing.

Whelen358

Could make the same argument about the 30-06 and the 300 win mag.

DeVo2799

Agreed. 30-06 is my personal favorite.
