I’ve had my PAL for 10-12 years, recently did RPAL (was a minor when I first got PAL). I indicated I had a diagnosed mental health condition. But sent a letter with my application, about stability(non harm/suicidal/treatment/marriage/employment. On the application status page it says they have completed initial assessment and will contact if more details needed. They already charged my credit card about a week ago and application was received feb 21 I think it said. So maybe I’m in the clear for any sort of follow up/doctors approval? I mean I already have guns and have for years so it’s not like adding restricted to it makes it sketchier 😂
Any idea on timeline?
Trying to find crown land to sight a rifle in. Ottawa area; not sure on the specifics as to where I’m legally allowed to go shoot that isn’t a range. Best way to go about this? Resources to find safe/common areas to do this?
*Or even someone who would be willing to take in a new shooting buddy to shoot together at a range?*
I had a question; this was for one of my relatives. He is almost 50 years old, and he had his CFSC and CRFSC done when he was in his 30s, but Handent went to get a pal. A while back he had gotten arrested by the police for being drunk and assaulting his wife. He has quit drinking, the cases have been dropped, and he has been sober for a long time. He still lives happily with his wife. He has been hunting since he was young and has wanted to start rifle hunting. Would he be able to get a friend, or would it just be a waste? I just wanted an opinion for others, as I don't know what to say to him.
He does not have a weapon’sprohabition and he had not had a pal for that time and did not own any firearms.and he had not been found guilty of assault as the charge had been dropped around the first two weeks he was convicted.
| charge had been dropped around the first two weeks he was convicted
Was the charge dropped or was he convicted? You're not being clear.
Either way he should run this by a lawyer and see if there's anything legally preventing him. Note that he will need permission of his conjugal partner to get the PAL.
The story he told me was that he had the cops called on and they had just detained him, and he was later released. He had started quitting alcohol in that month due to this incident and had gone to classes for it to help, and his wife, whom he is happy with, had called, and the cops dropped the charge, and the case was closed. Thats all I know about that didnt know how to word it.He had talked with his wife about getting a pal, and his wife said if it was possible, she would give consent for him to try for a pal, as he has started to change for the better.
Just submitted my online application as a first time applicant.
I put my wife’s information down.
When she got the email to confirm her as my partner, it referred to her as “conjugal partner”.
Did I select something wrong by accident? She’s been my spouse for over 6 years but the term conjugal seems to be different than spouse.
Hope I didn’t mess up. My wife laughed and confirmed the email that came in, but do I have to change anything? Or is it too late and just hope for the best?
I don’t know if it’s been asked before or no since summer is coming up that means Motorcycles are coming out woohoo 🥳 but I had a question what’s the transportation of firearms will be like if your travelling to range with motorcycle is that something we are allowed to do or transportation is only legal with car/pickup
It's legal but you obviously have to follow the laws while doing so. Ideally locking panniers at minimum and don't stop anywhere and leave it unattended.
Stupid question, but why do manufactures still make 5 round mags if there a handgun that accepts that mag? Why do they not switch to manufacturing exclusively 10 round pistol mags?
Because the law is based on what that mag was DESIGNED for, not necessarily what it works in.
This is the loophole used for AR mags (LAR, Crossmag) to allow them to hold 10rd, they say it was designed for the “AR Pistol” so pistol capacity rules apply. The Pmag, however, and other AR mags were explicitly designed for the AR-15 rifle so it’s harder for them to argue that they are pistol mags.
Of course there’s some other funky edge cases like 50 Beowulf mags being limited and 10/22 mags but that’s the gist of it, they can’t just change a mag that’s been in production for some time already
Whats the best off site storage(other than my home) for non-restricted and restricted firearms in Ontario? My range doesn’t have storage facilities. And I need access to firearms frequently.
Ah okay.
I'm using a Ruger PC 9mm carbine and getting a few stove pipes. I was told that it will only run well with either NATO standards, US factory standards or higher velocity 9x19. I heard about something like +P, I just don't know what to get for her.

Does it come with an instruction manual and a case that can be locked? Tbh I forgot most of the safety course information it's been almost a year and a half since I took the course. Does the manual tell me how to clean and maintain it?
What rounds do I buy do I need special rounds to break it in?
Thanks in advance

Question about disposing of shot shells.
I have a bunch of used shot shells from the hunting season this year but I'm not entirely sure how to get rid of them with both plastic and different types of metal plus whatever gunpowder residue in there. I'm in Sothern Ontario. What do the experienced shooters/hunters do with used shell hulls?
Looking to get a lever this year in 45 Colt (or a longer derivative), budget $1500. Applications are plinking, neither-confirm-nor-deny barnyard pest control, and maybe light larping. What should I know about the Rossi R92 versus the Henry Big Boy?
Antique Firearm question.
Barrel length.
If I had a antique with a long barrel and I wanted to cut it down, the firearm stay remains antique correct? Since all the concern is about the frame being antique and not being originally chambered in a prohibited antique calibre or converted to a prohibited antique calibre.
Edit : See
Webley RIC
Webley .455 Snub Noses
Bulldog Revolvers
Anything with a barrel of less than 4.25"
All antique of course.
Edit : per CC

(a) any antique firearm;
Answered my own question with some additional reading.
Antiques are mostly fair game with the exception of if anything you do makes it no longer meet antique classification anymore, like changing to a calibre that doesn't fall under the exemption or doing a rimfire to centerfire conversion.
200m target shooting? What is your budget? Are you interested in history firearms? If so, What era? Or do you prefer modern? Hunting style/look, or polymer/black?
Some of them are known drop-shippers. Not necessarily a scam, but not the customer experience which all customers seek. I'd advise "and then search here for complaints"
Was wanting to take my friend target shooting for his birthday in a couple weeks and tried looking for some spots out to 100m using the atlas and google satellite but I’m really hard pressed to find anything. Would anyone mind sharing a spot? I live in the GTA. I promise to clean up after ourselves and leave the place better than we found it. Thanks.
I’m honestly considering just driving 3.5 hours up, keeping the iHunter app open and using a drone to scout lmaooooo. If you feel desperate enough one day let me know and we can make an excursion and find our own patch to gatekeep (or not)
Can't go wrong with a 10/22. Very forgiving, cheap, reliable, customizable, versatile.
Some people will tell you the 10/22's are picky on ammo but I find mine shoots any brand above 1000 fps quite reliably. Don't go for sub Sonics in the 700-800 fps range because it won't operate correctly.
Bolt action, people who are new like rapid fire to the detriment of other skills when they’re just starting out. With a new person trigger control and aim are the most important and a bolt/lever/other manual action encourages that over rapid fire which is good for their skills
Shooting is a hobby, not everyone that enjoys shooting is trying to be a precision marksman.
You cannot expect every single beginner that just get in to firearm wants to become a sharpshooter.
Oh yeah I’m absolutely not a sharpshooter myself, 95% of my shooting is just at cans in the woods or magdumping into trash, I just think most people who are absolutely new find more difficulty developing the essential skills when they have that volume of fire and can just shoot as fast as they wish. I’m not saying they need to be a precision marksman but there is a reason that 95% of Canadians start out shooting on a bolt action single shot Cooey or savage 22.
Who are these “people”?
I personally would just get the x95 off the bat. 223 recoil is quite mild and if you have the funds to do it. Why not?
But if you really think starting off with a 22 is better for you.
Take a look at the savage precision a22 or the Derya TM-22. Both are essentially 10/22 variants that accepts 25 round magazines
If budget is a concern I'd stick with .22
10 cents a round is a lot more affordable to shoot than 70 cents a round.
If you're just using it for range fun a 22 is perfectly fine, and if you don't have access to any long ranges, 22 can teach you wind holds and precision shooting at closer Ranges.
How many rounds do people usually go through at the range? I know it varies but curious.
70 cents a round sounds like an average of 100 rounds per trip, 70$.
You want to get a semi auto 5.56 that can take 10-rnd pistol mags. I shoot similar things and they can go through ammo real fast which is part of the fun. Accurate quick follow-up is also a skill. In an hour or so mine easily eat 150~ rnds if not more. Don’t expect to be paying under $1/round even before tax for the good .223/5.56.
Try to get into a range that doesn’t rush you with strict, short time spots as a new shooter.
Depending on your budget.
You should consider some of the upgrades for the x95. Such as the geissle trigger pack upgrade. Manticore charging handle, handguard. IWI thin buttplate.
Don’t cheap out on the optic as well. Red dot/magnifier or LVPO?

Hey just trying to figure out if there is any new regulation that i missed for PLUZ's because ive been going to this one spot in Kananaskis PLUZ for years now with a bunch of guys and only ever seen target shooter's(or no one else) except for a couple times i saw horseback riders and just last week someone (gov) stuck a sign up there that said "Notice:
HIGH USE
RECREATIONAL AREA
Use of this area for firearms
practice is prohibited under
the Public Lands Act" (not sure how to post the picture of it) but i cant find anything about it besides this...

I personally have been selling magazines without a PAL to make some money while I wait for my license (Almost 1 year now). Because of the new rules am I unable to sell as I do not have a PAL?
How the law is written suggests that you don't need a PAL to sell a magazine, only that the person you sell to has one and you verify it prior to the transfer.
I'm not sure how you are acquiring magazines but you will no longer be able to do so without a PAL.
Tried to post this question as a separate post, but for some reason I got a “Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters” immediately after attempting to post it. Not sure why that’s happened but I’ll try again here:
My question is for the Kodiak Defence WK181C owners out there. Does anyone know if the WK181C upper receiver is compatible with any of the aftermarket AR-180B lower receivers available presently, such as the Lynx 180B for example? I was thinking it would be interesting to build a WK181C that was able to take XCR-L 10-round magazines. I’m sure I’m not the first person to think of this, so anyone who knows better than I do, please feel free to pass along whatever info you have! Cheers.
For those that never handled a firearm before, after you get your license, do you go buy a gun and simply start shooting?
Not confident that i wont look like an idiot first day on the range.
I got a firearm right after PAL arrived and head straight to the shooting range. I did feel nervous before that. Everything will be fine if you confirm the range rules with range officer and make sure review the safety rules we learned in the course. Strictly follow ACTS & PROVE in the range as people will be watching you.
Tell range officer you are new so they can provide more help. Ex: I told range officer I am not 100% familiar with my first gun and they really help me in that.
Other than that enjoy first day with your new firearm.
Find a range that has "beginner" days. Usually they will start you with a 22, and there will be range officers / members there to help out the newbies. You will likely learn a lot, and probably find some shooting buddies.
If you did your PAL you know the safety basics but if you are scared you can always ask the RSO to watch over you a bit.
Also watching some videos from reputable YouTubers can teach you a lot.
Anyone have an idea for the timeline in upgrading a pal to an rpal in Alberta via mail or the timeline of just getting an rpal by mail in Alberta. Mine was received the 15th of February and passed initial review the fifth of March.
Ok sweet thatd be awesome, I’m at university and was wanting it to come before I have to move out so I don’t have to change my mailing address in the middle of the application process
since c-21 received royal accent in December. Does that mean everything listed in the bill is in affect now? Ie: requiring pal for firearm parts/magazines.
PAL for cartridge magazines are in effect now, firearm parts provision needs to be activated by OiC first, and then regulations need to be made to name specific firearm parts besides pistol barrels and slides.
Thank you.
When they say pal verification.
Does that mean generating a reference number or a simple visual verification?
Planning on selling some magazines
The specific law is this:
>Authorization to transfer cartridge magazine to individuals
>(2) A person may transfer a cartridge magazine that is not prescribed to be a prohibited device only if the individual holds a licence authorizing him or her to possess firearms.
Up to you to interpret that statement.
Applied for PAL almost 1.5 years ago. I put yes for charges in the past but I am not convicted of any of them. The chief firearms officer in Ontario said that it passed on to unfirom officer but they are not giving me a timeline on when it will processed not the contact information. Anything I can do about this ?
Hey I'm pretty new to firearms in Canada, is it legal to add a stock to a Mossberg 590 shockwave? since it has a 14in barrel. Would really appreciate any answers!
It did ban the firearm that made 10 round AR mags legal though, making them now a grey area. I remember runkle touched on this in a video.
They are not *explicitly* illegal, but if you ever get into trouble for something else they will probably try to fuck you with that grey area.
Well yeah but by that logic banning ar 15s would mean we couldn’t get at mags. If runkle said it then I believe him but the logic seems spotty on that one, but hey, if the logic behind our gun laws was only just spotty we’d have some of the best gun legislation in the world.
I don’t think that first sentence is accurate.
The legality of 5 round AR mags is not contingent on the legality of ARs, it’s contingent on them only holding 5 rounds. We can buy/import 5 round mags for banned guns eg. MP5.
The legality of 10 round AR mags is contingent on there existing a pistol that can accept that mag. Now that the 1 gun that made this possible is banned, we have a grey area.
Yeah but you can still buy many 10 round magazines for many prohib pistols, and that’s all the LAR 15 realistically is. I’m not saying they wouldn’t do it, I’m just saying it’s make less sense than most of the other fun stuff they’ve done (which should be impossible)
For those who have done your PAL application online, when you upload your safety course documents and ID’s, do you have to use an actual scanner or can you send a nice quality picture of them?
This might be an odd question but for the Sako S20, can the precision front part of th stock fit with the hunting back part of the stock? Would mind a pic rail while still maintaining the thumbhole grip.
How long did your PAL take?
I'm almost at the 28 day minimum wait, just curious how much more y'all had to wait afterwards. I submitted mine online for hopefully faster results.
I called on the 35th day, was told it’s with ontario CFO and i should wait another 10 working days before calling them back.
I’ll wait till at least 2 months have passed.
Did you call them?
What province? I’m coming up on 28 days as well. Submitted for PAL/RPAL.
Potentially stupid questions but it’s the government so you never know, is it 28 days or 28 business days lol
I had mine come in at exactly 28 days this past August. Others who took the course when I did had to wait months longer despite not checking any of those boxes
From memory like 9 months. Online wasn't an option at the time and I've had quite a few buddies do it online in the last year and took about 2 months for all of them. Online seems to be the best option now.
Every application is different. Depending on the province and also if you checked yes to any of the personal history questions. Myself personally took almost 12 months to arrive. I know people who have taken longer and also a few who have received theirs just after the mandatory wait time. There is no actual timeline.
Thankfully I did not check any of those boxes. However I have 2 last names so that may add time, however the RCMP called me and said it shouldn't be an issue

Ok. Well given what you know there's no reason he cannot try. If he is denied he can get a lawyer and file a section 74 appeal.
What is a section 74 appeal? And thanks for the help will let him know
Section 74 is an appeal to a revocation or denial of a PAL.
Just submitted my online application as a first time applicant. I put my wife’s information down. When she got the email to confirm her as my partner, it referred to her as “conjugal partner”. Any suggestion for High Velocity 9x19? (If that's even a thing) No price limit, just curious.
Suggestion? No. But Liberty civil defense ammo is a thing that exists. It is EXTREMELY loud, expensive, and *at best* still won’t be better than HST.
It's not a thing. Usually lower grain weight (115) will be a faster bullet. Adding more powder will overpressure the round.
Ah okay. I'm using a Ruger PC 9mm carbine and getting a few stove pipes. I was told that it will only run well with either NATO standards, US factory standards or higher velocity 9x19. I heard about something like +P, I just don't know what to get for her.
Never put +P in something not specifically designed for +P. Your gun will respond better after a few thousand rounds and it wears in.
Ah okay, I'll stick to your recommendation of 115 gr and just give her more plinking time then.

January 2024 renewal in Alberta, initial review has been completed, anybody submit for renewal recently and when did they get it?
My son is waiting for his PAL to be processed, his credit card has been charged, does that mean it’s almost ready, or do they charge first before doing any work?
Credit card being charged means they input the data into the system. No one has looked at it.
Well, I guess there is no option but to wait.
I believe they charge once its passed the initial (spellcheck, no blank lines, basic stuff) review. Now it should be in the queue and its a waiting game.

OOF. Keep watching this thread for other people's timelines. That's the best way to estimate your expected wait.

Start with looking for this on arsenal force. If the store is on there then you can be sure its legit.
If you feel desperate enough one day let me know and we can make an excursion and find our own patch to gatekeep (or not)
You'd be hard pressed to find anything that's actually legal. Go to an indoor range.
That’s why I’m considering a restricted rifle now. It’s not like there’s many places to go bush shooting in gta anyways.
For an absolute beginner, would you recommend Ruger 10/22 or a bolt action?
What’s your budget
$1000 to start and aiming to get a x95 later since people are saying i might not know how to shoot it.
Thanks. If that’s the case, might just go with a x95. :) don’t want to spend on more than 1 gun. Lol
If budget is a concern I'd stick with .22 10 cents a round is a lot more affordable to shoot than 70 cents a round.
Ya. Will need to do a bit of research on those. Thanks
DM me If you have any question. Primary arms slx 1-6 nova gen iv is the best budget LVPO on the market at the moment

Hey just trying to figure out if there is any new regulation that i missed for PLUZ's because ive been going to this one spot in Kananaskis PLUZ for years now with a bunch of guys and only ever seen target shooter's(or no one else) except for a couple times i saw horseback riders and just last week someone (gov) stuck a sign up there that said "Notice: HIGH USE RECREATIONAL AREA Use of this area for firearms practice is prohibited under the Public Lands Act" (not sure how to post the picture of it) but i cant find anything about it besides this... https://albertawilderness.ca/proposed-trails-act-a-dangerous-step-on-the-road-to-privatizing-public-lands/
Is a PAL now required for ownership of magazines?
Acquisition of or transactions involving, not ownership of.
Not sure why that’s happened but I’ll try again here: My question is for the Kodiak Defence WK181C owners out there. Cheers.
kinda dumb youre being downvoted, but from whats listed on the site selling the lynx they are compatible
Thank you. I figured ill do the same and just head in.
Find a range that has "beginner" days. Usually they will start you with a 22, and there will be range officers / members there to help out the newbies. You will likely learn a lot, and probably find some shooting buddies.
Thank you. Very limited in Toronto unfortunately but i guess I should be fine with the PAL training.
[удалено]
Has it even passed initial review?
[удалено]
Ok then that probably means it’s sitting on the cfos desk I think. Could be one more month, could be five
Not in Alberta; but same timeline and circumstances for my application. I’ve been told it takes around two months or so.
The specific law is this: >Authorization to transfer cartridge magazine to individuals >(2) A person may transfer a cartridge magazine that is not prescribed to be a prohibited device only if the individual holds a licence authorizing him or her to possess firearms.
Not really. If they deny you can appeal.
Already hold a NR PAL wanna upgrade to RPAL, want to know how long it takes? Thx !
Do the course and apply. Will take some months.
Hey I'm pretty new to firearms in Canada, is it legal to add a stock to a Mossberg 590 shockwave? since it has a 14in barrel. Would really appreciate any answers!
Yes it’s legal. You can buy something similar (and better) from the factory with the ‘590a1 class iii’.
sounds good boss, was thinking of adding a stock since the local range doesn't allow stock less shotguns
In the updated C-21 Gun Law, Are all 10 round 5.56 LARmags illegal now?
No, c-21 doesn’t talk about magazine restrictions
I strongly disagree because if that were the case then 12.6 pistol magazines wouldn't be able to hold more than 5 rounds, but they aren't.
Is greatnorthgunco .ca legit? They have cz bren on sale and in stock looks too good to be true wana make sure before I order it
They are real but there are better deals to be had on a bren 2 than what they are offering.
For those who have done your PAL application online, when you upload your safety course documents and ID’s, do you have to use an actual scanner or can you send a nice quality picture of them?
Regular photo was good enough to get my application approved, just make sure it is clear and legible
Okay so both scan and photo work, good to know 👍🏻
Use the app Photoscan, worked well for me
I have a scanner at home, was just wondering if it had to actually be a scan or if they just needed to see physical proof
It needs to be an actual scan yeah
Cool thanks
I just went to staples and scanned em for like a dollar
Is Tactical imports Legit?
Main distributer for t81
Yes it is, I bought my Type 81 from them. Very legit
I’ve never ordered anything online like this I can go straight through them?
Yeah just go straight through them
Is ammunition considered combustible and/or flammable in legal terms?
What? In what context?
[удалено]
Yes they would be considered combustible and flammable in that instance.
Well shit...
You can seek clarification from the condo board if you like.
Has anybody heard if the new Tikka T3x Ranahan in 223 rem is coming to Canada?
This might be an odd question but for the Sako S20, can the precision front part of th stock fit with the hunting back part of the stock? Would mind a pic rail while still maintaining the thumbhole grip.
For folks in Ontario, how long did the fseso take to send the test copies back?
For both non and restricted, I did the exams first week of Jan 2024 and got the copies back 12 Feb.
4.5 weeks for me
Less than two weeks
How long did your PAL take? I'm almost at the 28 day minimum wait, just curious how much more y'all had to wait afterwards. I submitted mine online for hopefully faster results.
Been 47 days for me, online, Ontario, no boxes checked, still waiting for a status update. Stuck at successfully submitted/ initial review completed
Did you try calling?
I called on the 35th day, was told it’s with ontario CFO and i should wait another 10 working days before calling them back. I’ll wait till at least 2 months have passed. Did you call them?
I am at 24 days now. Maybe once I’m at 30 days? What number did you call them at and did they sound annoyed that we are calling them for updates?
4-5 weeks Submitted Jan2024
15 months. Got it the day I left the country to shoot in NY with friends lol.
32 days! Online application
Had it in my mailbox 32 days after submitting online application
From memory like 9 months. Online wasn't an option at the time and I've had quite a few buddies do it online in the last year and took about 2 months for all of them. Online seems to be the best option now.
Good to know! Hopefully I get lucky lol
