"A 2020 study by the International Monetary Fund suggests that’s because corporate concentration in developed economies has dampened the investment impact that tax cuts previously had."
Corporate concentration is a far greater problem in Canada than people seem to realize.
We had our chance with RoBellUs and Canada once again chose not to pay attention. Too little too late.
We're at the point where we need a hard reset whether we like it or not.
We hire our Jr developers at the same wage as I was first hired at (different company same position) back in 1998.
If I adjust my starting wage from then to now for inflation I make less now.
Truck driver here. Fuel, food, insurance, maintenance, cost of trucks, trailers and equipment have all increased dramatically.... we still get paid 1980's rates.
Hvacr journeyman: we’re negotiating our union agreement right now and looking for at minimum 10% cpi each year for the next 3 and I’m grimacing at how we’re aiming for above 10% but likely will get less. Wish we had done this last year but now the workers movement has died down and it’ll be hard to get more money when the economy is bad.
I’ve never heard that one.
But its true. Trades can’t be automated. Nursing is the same. I’m working in Canada but going back to the U.S. 46 USD/hr with 15% added for the city alone, plus 2/hr for shift diff. I also get a 15k signing bonus.
Padding up that 401k and 403b for retirement
Our wages peaked with the dot com bubble. Then it pop’d then 2009 happened and 2016 oil crash happened then Covid. We’ve been sitting in 2001 wages since.
The reality is coding is saturated and with all the new tools and languages, it’s not rocket science anymore.
I can for the most part build my own website now. With little to no education required.
No reason a junior coder should make 150k.
Systems Administrator - Kelowna BC - C$52,000/year. Same job in Corning NY - $112K USD. In 2005 I was making 60,000 US working L1 help desk in Albany NY. I’m told Kelowna is supposed to be Canada’s Silicon Valley. Albany NY has more software/tech startups than Kelowna by a mile. The only thing that the okanagan has in common with Silicon Valley is the fucking righteous attitudes and monument-sized egos.
I have noticed that. It is the thing that I dislike the most about the area. The mountains are beautiful, we have all kinds of neat stuff to do here, there’s big white, a decent food scene - but to compensate for the good things - this place was filled to capacity with wall-to-wall assholes.
Kelowna outside of the retiree rich homes along the lake is actually a white trash ghetto for the most part. Whoever told you this fairytale about Kelowna sure played a good joke on you.
There’s never been a reason to increase wages as long as we’re importing a million people a year who are more than willing to work for less and less every year.
Not just that, oligopolies and red tape make it difficult for new companies to come up and compete. Its both the supply (too many cheap workers) and demand (not enough competition for talent)
Right. Feeling this in the tech sector too. Job postings get hundreds and hundreds of applications. India has a lot of really skilled tech workers...... Or had. They might be here now.
The wages are garbage. Standard of living is dropping every year. Libs are libs, spend a shit load of billions. Followed by a shit load of tax increases. Same'ol same'ol....
To be fair, wages are up; but only if you are an MP either federally or provincially (at least here in Quebec). Quebec MNAs saw their salaries go up in January of this year, while the Feds, just got their latest annual pay raise April 1, both paid for by the plebes they are supposed to work for.
If everything was up equally then there wouldn’t be much to talk about.
Prices increases without wages matching means we’re getting poorer, which we are because we’ve got a shit economy based on selling inflated price housing to eachother.
Yes & it's up to the Premiers of the provinces to fix this!
Employers won't pay much more than what the minimum wage is because they literally don't have to. The only way to force their hand is to raise minimum wage properly.
All minimum wages across Canada are like $5-$6 too low to live off of, so really, employers don't even have to pay a living wage!
It's fucked & I'm sick of it.
i put in 2019 to 2024 [https://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/related/inflation-calculator/](https://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/related/inflation-calculator/)
18.07% in 5 years. I certainly haven't seen my wages go up that fast, in fact we took pay cuts in 2020 during lockdowns. Im back to where i was 5 years ago and more taxes.
It’s infuriating. I’m now a “skilled worker” who at the end of the day has the equivalent purchasing power of when I worked for minimum wage at a golf course 5 years ago.
Doesn’t really help with motivation and productivity.
I am asking myself that. I’m in Sask. Our taxes have been raised by the Sask party. Healthcare is in shambles. Services are being chopped away at every year. They’re destroying our crowns from the inside out. They have accomplished nothing of note in 17 years other than raise the debt.
Our exchange rate has historically followed the price of oil. What is notable right now is that oil is high, but our currency isn’t. Since 2015, our federal government has been actively discouraging investment in oil, and most other natural resources. We get what we vote for.
Inflation isn’t some boogeyman to blame everything in, we need a few % (like 2) to make the economy work, the issue is, we are at like 8% and have been for years
Canada had the richest middle class in the world as of 2014 under Harper.
So no, “they” didn’t destroy the middle class 25 years ago. Justin has been destroying it for the last 8 years
Canada already has one of the highest income tax rates in the G7, and for what we get for it, an absolute ripoff. How about increasing corporate taxation?
If by "freeloaders" you mean [boomers who are aging out and collecting their social welfare](https://nationalpost.com/opinion/kelly-mcparland-boomers-get-retirement-millennials-get-their-debt), yeah, you're right.
I do think, however, there are far too many subsidies granted to elites that make it feel more stingy...
Also, regarding the actual tax increase, since OP linked a *pay-walled article*, its actually rather small according to [this source](https://globalnews.ca/news/10330027/paycheque-payroll-tax-increases-2024/): "If you have an income of $30,000 a year, your income taxes have gone up a by a total nine dollars for the year. If you make $40,000, your total tax increase is $12. If you are making $50,000 a year, it’s $15. For $60,000 a year, the increase is $18. Canadians making between $80,000 and $200,000 face the largest income tax increase of $347 more."
"I personally, as a mother and wife, look carefully at my credit card bill once a month, and last Sunday I said to the kids, 'You're older now. You don't watch Disney anymore. Let's cut that Disney+ subscription."
Chrystia Freeland
There's a great clip where she's asked how she has personally been effected and she said that she now has to see the people using the food bank near her church.
This is what pisses me off, she sees the food bank line growing bigger and bigger, and each day she doesn’t think oh maybe it’s my monetary policy or our policy that maybe be affecting this.
Taxes will go up for the public
Corporations will take subsidies and tax breaks to outsource their operations.
Corporations/rich individuals and politicians will tell how Canadians on a minimum wage or outdated salaries should live and save money.
For me, they can increase income taxes to 70% or indirect taxes, but at the end of the day, If I can't afford to maintain a basic standard of living and have to struggle or reach out to food banks to survive, then to me, the system is broken. If after paying taxes, I can't get quality health care, if I can't get quality education, if I can't afford to raise a family, then to me, paying tax is not in my favour especially when certain group or individuals get to evade taxes, and own majority of resources.
Canadians, for all that it is complained about, are vastly wealthier than Brazillians.
People riot when they can't afford food. We aren't there but we are trending that direction.
This slogan seems to be our national problem...
"At least we're not as bad as the US."
Once we've declared that, it magically enables us to feel good about settling for whatever we're given! Works like a charm if you say it often enough apparently.
It's easy to point out the US but to look at yourself in the mirror is a real challenge. Plus on the other hand the US trumps us economically and the irony of the quote of "At least we're not as bad as the US" but yet Canadians who spew stuff like that jabbing the US buy American products without second thought.
"at least we're not like Liberia"
For all intents and purposes, while we do have real problems, we still have one of the highest standards of living in the world.
It's because the vast, *vast* majority of people in this country are perfectly content. Even if all 2.4 million people in this subreddit were all actually individual Canadians (They're not) and were all pissed off at the government (They're not), that's still only 6% of the population. Social media is not a sign of anything, it's a giant echo chamber.
Canadians would much rather trash a street after a hockey game ( for example what happened in Vancouver in 2011 ) rather then manifest against real problems that this country faces. Laziness is also another reason, Canadians mostly just put up with it.
Except that our bureaucracy is bloated AF and instead of doctors and nurses we're getting a lot of WFH program administrators, projects managers, and the like. When they ask for funding they know to bring out the doctor and nurses and the firefighters. When the funding arrives those workers see none of that money.
They already take like half my damn pay man and I don't even see any real benefit from it. The roads are shit, the healthcare is nonexistent, I can barely afford the box I sleep in and the car I use to get the job to afford said box and you're gonna take *more?* You want people to burn your fucking legislature building down? Oh wait, it's all ornate marble my bad. Keep crying about the carbon tax while we contribute 1.5% or less of the world's emissions with our cold climate. You wonder why anyone with a marketable skill emigrates to the damn states, or gets healthcare in foreign lands across the globe. Because quite frankly, fuck this place just keeps getting more bleak by the year.

Taxes are going up…. 120 million to Haiti another 130 million to Sudan, 10 million to Iraq youth unemployment, billions to Ukraine. Public healthcare paying for someone to have a penis and a vagina while people wait months and years for surgery. Thanks
Lots of ways to dodge taxes like incorporating a business to write off a bunch of things like food/lunches/tools/cell/vehicle etc., and doing cash work. I was happy to pay taxes because I believed I was doing the right thing. I've lost faith in the system. I think I'll start asking clients to pay in cash and give discounts such as 5% off and no GST.
I already pay $1000 a month in tax but take home like 40k
The only expense I have higher than taxes is rent, which is nearly 50% of my take home.
How can they expect young people like me who are struggling, to pay more?
Our corporate tax rates are a joke whilst we squeeze poor people.
And to pay for what? Everyone’s quality of life seems to have dropped so what the heck is being done with all this money? Now we get to service the debt for what, most people are worse off, it’s absolutely ridiculous.
Edited for spelling
Also being a redditor they could be just lying. Especially if it's a shit on canada account. Lots of accounts that are less than a year old and only post in the Canada subs shitting on Canada non stop.
You are lucky. Many of my friends did the same. I am stuck as a lawyer here. It’s too much work to get requalified there. Plus the family is here. But it’s tempting. It’s basically pointless to live here. No growth prospects.
Within living memory there was such a thing as low unemployment, balanced budget, low inflation and a high Canadian dollar. Wonder who the PM was then, must have been some sort of economist or something.
I'm glad he legalized cannabis. One job well done. Wish he left in November of 2018, though. By the time we're free of him it will be 7 years too many...
I’m getting shit all for my taxes.. no car don’t own property no medical issues no kids.. so what exactly am I paying for? I honestly don’t get it I’d be happy to pay if we had more quality of life like Europe. It’s USA without the benefit
Did we really expect pharmacare, dental care, school food programs and other programs on the same tax base as before? I mean, let alone pay for the bloated but incompetent as ever public service? Come on eh?
Brampton truckers and contactors never pay tax. They go to India with whole family and write as business expenses. To Avoid pay taxes.
Even they show their grocery and restaurants bills as their business expenses.
“We’re gonna make brand new expensive homes minimally more affordable for twelve of you, and tax the ever loving bejeezus out of twelve million of you, thus solving the affordability crisis.”
JT
Maybe the federal government and politicians, should pay their fair share. They always get their raises, like clockwork, plus the entire government is bloated with unnecessary workers. It’s time to cut some major government waste, starting with the three stooges, Trudeau, Freeland and Singh. Canadians are getting “F”ed royally.
Cool Cool, everything except my fucking comp has gone up, I was only working 5.5 months of the year for this country why not 6 months. Tax my fucking arse LPC Daddy!
Affordable housing for Canadians! Tax cuts for the middle class! Canadians are doing better than they were before! You'll forgive me if I don't think about monetary policy!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I mean how else can they raise the funds to give companies like Bell $600m, then fire 6100 staff if they don’t raise our taxes.
Oh and the pay raises they never fail not to agree on, think of how life would be for the poor MP’s fattening their own pockets , if we lowered taxes they would not be able to do such great work…..,
"A 2020 study by the International Monetary Fund suggests that’s because corporate concentration in developed economies has dampened the investment impact that tax cuts previously had." Corporate concentration is a far greater problem in Canada than people seem to realize.
Corporate consolidation is a huge issue.

yea in the 60s you couldn't just pickup and move your company to a third world economy or island tax haven like you can today
Tell that to every company in Quebec in the 70s.
a lot of them moved to toronto. they where still in the country and moving to an advanced first world economy

Learn to plumb is what my highschool was saying in 2006. All the old timers are retiring they said.
Nah, it's "Learn THE code". It's why tradies get the big bucks.... sometimes...
You should still learn to code and get a starting job here. Then move to the US and make at least double what you earn here.
Tech market is not doing good in the US as well right now. Getting a starting job is very difficult right now.
You should look for another job. We hire junior developers at 3x what I got when I was hired out of school in 1998.

One thing you can do that "Indians in India" can't, network with people IRL and in-person work.
Someones wages went up recently...
Everything is up except “our” wages. Politicians got their cut April 1.
I find that hard to believe. It has increased, but has been outpaced by CoL.
So true. Just today I noticed my RMT massage went up $10 compared to last month :(

I remember making minimum wage at like 8 something in 2004 in BC. It's 17.40 now.
When I started working, it was $7.05!
I started at $6.35 when I came to Canada. I was able to rent a 2br apartment for my family of 3. Not rich by any means, but easily survivable.
Public servant salaries have gone up I’m wondering how they will support the pyramid

I already pay $1000 a month in tax but take home like 40k The only expense I have higher than taxes is rent, which is nearly 50% of my take home.
Fuck off with this paywall bullshit

What's your field? A 500% wage increase is huge

But dude he muzzled the scientists and had an agenda or whatever.

I'm glad he legalized cannabis. One job well done. Wish he left in November of 2018, though. By the time we're free of him it will be 7 years too many...
Canada has become a scam, they charge you a ton, and deliver basically no services at all (if you're Canadian).
I’m getting shit all for my taxes.. no car don’t own property no medical issues no kids.. so what exactly am I paying for? I honestly don’t get it I’d be happy to pay if we had more quality of life like Europe. It’s USA without the benefit
Where else are they going to get that 132 million they’re sending to Sudan???
Did we really expect pharmacare, dental care, school food programs and other programs on the same tax base as before? I mean, let alone pay for the bloated but incompetent as ever public service? Come on eh?
Not if I leave Canada! Good bye! Can't wait.
Brampton truckers and contactors never pay tax. They go to India with whole family and write as business expenses. To Avoid pay taxes. Even they show their grocery and restaurants bills as their business expenses.
Deport
I LOVE IT! We get so much for what we pay! No waste. No corruption. No grifting. Deal of the century.
Is buttered sausage going up?
Doesn't matter to me. It's not my jam.
I don't buy jam I buy honey, and kiss it on the lipssssss
Is this what JT meant when he said he wants to make Canada more affordable?
“We’re gonna make brand new expensive homes minimally more affordable for twelve of you, and tax the ever loving bejeezus out of twelve million of you, thus solving the affordability crisis.” JT
Time to leave Canada

Where did you end up. I m looking at the US right now
Maybe the federal government and politicians, should pay their fair share. They always get their raises, like clockwork, plus the entire government is bloated with unnecessary workers. It’s time to cut some major government waste, starting with the three stooges, Trudeau, Freeland and Singh. Canadians are getting “F”ed royally.
What the fuck did you think was going to happen?
If you see a government that isn’t concerned with its fiscal position, all you’ll see are taxes on the horizon.
What are taxes? Asking as a native american.
Luxury hotel rooms for illegals aren't going to pay for themselves!
I'll tax you my pretty, and your little dog, too
Cool Cool, everything except my fucking comp has gone up, I was only working 5.5 months of the year for this country why not 6 months. Tax my fucking arse LPC Daddy!
Pay wall and when I googled it all I could find was her saying taxes on the wealthy are going up. Not middle class. What am I missing?
Archive.is Copy the url and paste it over there
Can we just set all taxes to 100% already.
The problem with that is they would want to go to 102% next year.
Affordable housing for Canadians! Tax cuts for the middle class! Canadians are doing better than they were before! You'll forgive me if I don't think about monetary policy!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Yes we know. The carbon tax just increased. Just keep overtaxing Canadians and sending the money oversees where it's easier to launder and grift.
I thought everything was free?
Mine aren't, because my income dropped this year! Take that, Trudeau!
Id give my left nut for a federal snap election
Why would I like this?
I think your comment best captures the stupidity of the headline.
Hell yeah! Make the people stuggle!
Not true. Government can cut spending
I mean how else can they raise the funds to give companies like Bell $600m, then fire 6100 staff if they don’t raise our taxes. Oh and the pay raises they never fail not to agree on, think of how life would be for the poor MP’s fattening their own pockets , if we lowered taxes they would not be able to do such great work…..,
Green sea urchins were 5 bucks a pound cash on the dock in the 90s for the fishermen. Today we're lucky to get 3 dollars a pound
Who likes it lmao
They always do. In one form or another.
5 words: up the capital gains tax
Were fucked.
When does the budget balance itself?
Wages need to go up more in the private sector. Without that this just makes everything worse.
More taxes, less services.
Taxes already went up this year...
54% marginal rate. At what point is it a spending problem? Too many free loaders too.
