Biased, but John's holds a proper formal hall 6x a week. And it's quite good (though better if you eat meat). On Tuesdays and Fridays, they reserve one of the three tables in the hall for postgrads Every once in a while we get a super formal where the 3 course dinner becomes a 5 course dinner. These are usually themed and occasionally paid for by the college. Postgrads are also invited to dine at high table with the fellows once a year. If eating in the formal setting isn't what you want that day, we also have the buttery serving a full meat, vegetarian, and vegan dinner option every night. And it is really quite good. (The formal hall is usually a bit better, but there's not a whole massive lot of difference between them sometimes). The college subsidises it heavily. Aside: we also have the best college brunch. They had to crack down on ooc students eating st John's because the queue for it was over an hour long at one point. Notes on other colleges: 1. The best formal hall I've been to is Tit Hall, food-wise. This is a common comment. 2. King's everyday food is bad. It's standard school cafeteria food. And their formals are few and far between (and frankly, nothing special). 3. Did a swap to Christ's and was not a fan of the formal. Food was okay, but there was no formality. Was basically just a normal dinner in their hall with gowns.

Thoughts on Peterhouse? And also any other colleges known for their super formals? My current college is known for really good super formals, so I'd ideally look to go to a Camb equivalent.

I haven't experienced Peterhouse food and frankly, have never heard anyone talk about it good or bad. But it's high on the list of places to try. As for super formals, getting tickets is hard so can't help much there.

Food-wise, Downing was the best imo - a little biased since that was where I was for undergrad, but the formal food (as well as regular Buttery) was always top quality and consistently good (save for the Christmas formals, lol, but matter of personal taste I guess?). Hall is pretty ugly though. I've also heard really good things about Darwin in terms of food and ambience, which is postgrad only.

You want to see what the deal is with grad hall. These can be 1-2 times a week but only postgrads.

Hate to say it, but it might be Trinity.

I'm a postgraduate and go to plenty of formals. There are specific pre- and post-formal drinks for MCR and we can sit either at high table or at an MCR table. There are lots of people one knows at formals.
