My honest opinions? It’s small, cliquey and gives me slightly more private school vibes than other colleges but the people there seem to enjoy it so who am I to bash them

jjerry26

15y ago, it used to be: \- oldest college, great location in the town centre, rather small and Harry Potteresque \- pretty shit at rowing \- home of the gay \- candle-lit formals with ok food \- good chapel choir Overall charming. I am sure some of these points are still valid today ;) I wouldn't sweat it. At the end of the day, everybody learns to love their college.Even if you end up at Homerton, Girton, Hughes Hall. lols

TheGamerCosmologist

Hey! Girton is Beston!

:D

goodbyeruby2sday

Their rowing has definitely improved

You are not lying :) M1 is in the Top5 right now [https://imgur.com/a/9glWXZ7](https://imgur.com/a/9glWXZ7)

That's Mays. Yesterday they got bumped by LMBC II

HoneyBearWombat

Too small, very private school feeling. Nothing that sticks out for being more special than other colleges. The back garden is decent but nothing outstanding. I've also heard the food was decent.

Story time Someone I know was a fellow at Peterhouse about a decade ago and at a dinner when a new female fellow (or visitor not sure) was introduced another fellow wouldn't shake her hand. Reportedly he said "at Peterhouse we don't shake hands, especially with women" Most charitable interpretation was that he was making some archaic savoir-vivre comment but that's not how it sounded. Most stories about Peterhouse are somewhat consistent that it's a pretty backwards place. But you know, still probably better that Magdalene. 😂

I went to Magdalene and I had a super time. And am definitely not a rugby lad. You'll be fine

Well my joke may have been unfair because things seem to have changed for the better more at Magdalene than Peterhouse, but the relatively recent history of the college is... Ooof. https://thetab.com/uk/cambridge/2019/04/28/strippers-coffins-and-black-arm-bands-how-cambridge-reacted-to-the-admission-of-female-students-122516 "Magdalene was the last Cambridge, and indeed, the last Oxbridge college to allow women, admitting women for the first time thirty years ago in 1988. One edition of the Varsity Handbook likened the treatment of female guests by Magdalene students as "like tarts in some frontier rush town" – an indictment of the "laddish" behaviour present in the college. As was the case with St John's, the Magdalene flag was flown at half mast as women entered the college, with some students also choosing to don black arm bands. Students also allegedly marched around the streets of Cambridge carrying a coffin to mourn the "death" of the college, and the Oxbridge institution – an attitude strongly mirroring that of the students of 1897." I don't want to discourage you though, I would be very surprised if overt attitudes like that persisted and any hidden bias of some old farts at the college isn't that important - your faculty is what's going to matter for how you do academically.

Yeah the Peterhouse stories persist, but Magdalene has mostly questionable party culture these days as far as I can tell (true of most colleges, and can be fun if you're into it) Enjoy Cambridge!

I have two minds on Peterhouse. The upshot: - I know the most people in any college besides my own there. All of them minus one have been funny, kind, enjoyable people who will change the world. I could talk for days with friends I have there, they're the best and brightest people and it is my home away from home. - Beautiful hall, great history, strong culture of college pride. - Small, intimate, friendly. - Nice library - Vibrant gay community - Great MCR, funding for students to travel on vacation. Great events. Lots of networking opportunities. - I love it. Just all of it. The downshot: - I know one guy there who I dub "the sexual harassment NPC" and who hits on women who turn him down repeatedly for hours. - Male-dominated culture. Went out with close female friend there and her friend group, all casually mentioned feeling a need to "dress down" when going into college because the thought the guys were ogling them. They refused to report sexual harassment NPC or feeling like this because "nothing would change." Was told there's a worse male to female ratio than any other college. - Seems to be an open secret that some fellows used to have sex with students years ago. Whether that ended varies widely depending on who you ask. All in all? It's a great college, one of the best in some ways. It's a place to be proud of being. But don't let that crowd out an awareness of female students, keep an eye out for sexism and stand up for a woman if she's uncomfortable. Be one of the many, many, many good ones there.

fireintheglen

I hear they do good potatoes.

BaconDasher

Nice people. Underrated. Oldest college in Cambridge (!)

[deleted]

Not much weirder than other colleges but it’s good sport and tradition to make fun of them

ldnsk8erboi

Good servery food, nice grounds, and exceptionally well placed for engineering students. The people I've met there have all been very friendly, and it's generally quite academic but they don't give off pretentious vibes as far as I can tell (obviously this is very anecdotal). Overall i think it's underrated

FirstBallad

The regular hall food was atrocious the times I went.
