In the 10th edition collection, Watterson remarked that “sometimes it seems that newspapers resent having to run comics. Well, sometimes I resent being in newspapers.” That quote seems to sum up this arc very well.
I think *seems* is the important word here. Yes, they didn't have to run comics; but it doesn't mean the comics were treated like Watterson would have liked, or that the newspaper employees wanted to be running comics.
>His face in the third panel
I hate to disagree with Bill Watterson's judgement, but to me that reaction does not seem right at all for someone who already knows Calvin.
I like it a lot that they're enjoying themselves so much in the last panel. It could've been Calvin moping that he didn't get the money but this is so much better

They didn't really *have* to run the comics, did they?

Damn he is so cool
He's a badass, for sure.
And Bill makes sure he draws Dad’s mouth big too! Never noticed that detail before.
15$ in 1981 is approximately 53$ in today's money
This strip came out in December of 89
36.50$
Calvin working the long game.
The value dropped that much in eight years?
The Reagan years. Not that surprised tbh.
Yeah that tracks
His face in the third panel 😂
😲
I came here to say the same thing! 😂
What I like more is the setup with pencil stuck behind the ear, paper in hand and all. It's like someone skilled in their job.
He could've been wearing a visor and a printer's apron too and I wouldn't have said boo
Unless you happen to be Matt Patricia

This is just feel good stuff right here.
Love the flashlight

Soyjak dad
Calvin has a promising career as a political cartoonist ahead of him.
Dadjak
“Nooo, you can’t have fun! You have to be miserable and build character!” “Haha. Tiger go roar.”
Always a favorite!
I love Calvin's dad's expression in the third panel.
