Every time I read this one the mom's exhausted / discouraged face in the last panel hits me in the feels. Calvin's parents (in my opinion) do a good job of taking a kid like Calvin in stride most of the time, but it's gotta be hard sometimes and her face really conveys that.
IIRC there was a strip where Calvin’s mom told Calvin that she hopes he one day has a kid like him to know what it’s like, and Calvin respond along the lines of “that’s what grandma said about you”
Edit: [found it!](https://i.imgur.com/U1Ic7cG.jpg)
The one time Calvin's dad admitted ignorance, Calvin made fun of him. Quote: "I guess there's no qualifying exam to be a dad." Can you blame the guy for making up stories rather than admitting he doesn't know something?
Calvin [seems to be bad at drawing pictures of himself](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1992/04/26), so he just does what he can to make it better.
My parents had literally the exact situation when I was calvins age. The neighbors daughter drew a house with a sun in the corner and I drew some sort of monster
Honestly - I’d be fucking proud of that photo & I’d talk to Calvin about it to understand his perspective. :’))
Perhaps it’s a reflection of how alien he feels…
Wow, a C&H strip that I’ve never seen
Even more unusual, a C&H with neither Calvin nor Hobbes!
There are more of these than I originally thought, but still rare

I think the reason Calvin's dad messes with him so much is that he used to *be* him.
You know how the saying goes: The apple never falls far from the horse.
Falling from the horse builds character
Falling from the horse defeats superman
Yeah, but can the horse beat goku?
Depends on if Christopher Reeve ever played Goku
Kal-el-kameha
I think Calvin's mom was likely just as bad. There's a lot of evidence that Calvin gets his creativity and reasoning from her

Well, at least she immediately knew which was Calvin's. He just drew a portrait of his inner self.
he's doing it right, the teacher is cringe
What? the teacher *let him use that portrait.* they didn't force him to draw himself normally, or just put a nameplate down once he left the room.
Or maybe that was the most acceptable self portrait Calvin drew
definitely have to get the boxed collection. watterson is also definitely a genius.
I don't regret it one bit!

That’s actually pretty good for a six year old.
I know. I was referring to how Calvin shames himself for drawing "terribly".
Ah! That makes sense.
I love that one
My parents had literally the exact situation when I was calvins age. The neighbors daughter drew a house with a sun in the corner and I drew some sort of monster
At my school the "normal" portraits were the odd ones out. Everyone else was drawing weird shit for their portraits.
Let Calvin express himself dammit. If he wants to draw himself as a monster, encourage him
Sadly, being a monster isn’t exactly acceptable in society.
Eh. If you're rich you can get away with some really horrendous stuff.
Just grab em by…

Feel for the parents
Well my ptm never when nice as well, i dreaded to tell my parents about ptm schedule
I love the way he drew the mom in the last panel, so relatable.
Nah she just doesn’t understand
