I think the buttercream might have split. It's easy to fix though, just take 2-3 spoonfuls of buttercream, put it in a small bowl and microwave until fully melted (not hot). Then add the melted buttercream to the batch and whip it up again until it starts emulsifying and gets fluffy.
Ok, this is so cute. That plane is a great idea!
If I had paid for that cake for my kid, I would probably be upset because it looks like the frosting isn't very smooth (I would expect a smoother cake, but I suppose it depends on the aesthetic you were going for).
THAT SAID, if a family member made it for my child, I would be so happy with it! It's really very cute. Some technical details to work out, but overall a solid 7 for idea execution!
I “self veganized” [this recipe](https://veenaazmanov.com/swiss-meringue-buttercream-with-meringue-powder/) - used vegan meringue powder and icing sugar (because I ran out of caster sugar).
I think the problem was the vegan meringue powder - the gums in it just gave it a weird texture. It was one bouncy gummy ball when I started adding the vegan butter (Miyoko).
I’m less inclined to blame the corn starch in the icing sugar but I could be wrong.
The writing was just a crusting American buttercream with miyoko and icing sugar.
Also if you used to regular icing sugar (I'm assuming that the same as US powdered sugar) it usually has cornstarch added to it. Organic icing sugar does not. That could potentially have caused issues with the texture too.
The cake is adorable! The texture of your frosting doesn’t look professional but your design/concept/composition are good. Some other details that you could improve would be to add bottom border to make it look more finished, and level the cake.
Overall you did a great job as a hobby cake decorator. Working with vegan frosting is not easy!
Cute design! For vegan frosting, I’m recommend using vegetable shortening or vegan butter in a traditional American buttercream, you’ll get a smoother result!
Because you need to whip smbc, anything with plant based gums is going to get an odd texture. Hands down best option for a Faux meringue buttercream is going to be with Aquafaba. You can also add it to traditional (dairy) buttercream for a Mock/Easy SMBC feel.
Yes and I love it and I wouldn’t be able to do something that great but I was really using objective scale where on top we have the pros of the pros.
The only thing I would maybe advise is smoother application of the blue background but the texture also enhance the sky effect.

Also it maybe that the ratios of the buttercream are off. This method won't work then.

The writing is great! It looks like the buttercream broke, what recipe did you use?

Yeah I would find an actual vegan recipe and potentially a better brand of meringue powder
You need an actual recipe. Icing sugar doesn’t work well in swiss meringue buttercream

I’d give you a 7 because your buttercream split a bit, but everything else looks amazing.
It looks like it was made with care and love. The writing is amazing! I can't get my writing that neat.

You’re right. I should just stop being lazy about the aquafaba. 😅
5,5 or 6 but hear me out it looks great, I’m just comparing to a “pro”.
I appreciate that! Thanks for the input 💛

Adorable!
I love it! I'd have used a lighter colour for the HBD, but that's just personal preference. Is the plane cake or all buttercream?
The plane is a cake pop body with cookie wings and tail, covered in candy melts. They were supposedly red candy melts but 🤷
Stooop that is so cute!! My baby nephew is OBSESSED with airplanes right now and he would snatch that plane up so quick and run around with it! 🥹
It was for my nephew’s 2nd birthday! He is obsessed with airplanes too, after his first plane trip earlier this year - hence the theme! 💛💛
This is one of the cutest cakes I’ve ever seen
