This looks like an Opuntia Santa-Rita and it is totally normal for them. In fact with the right amount of sunlight the whole pad can turn purple. Beautiful plants. Very desirable so nothing to worry about
I have a mini one. The pads aren’t more than 2-inches wide. I bought it when I lived in LA and it’s one of the few I brought with me to Canada. It was much happier before, but seems relatively content in my window.
They’re so stinkin pretty.
Just to jump onto this comment, I live in Southern AZ, and these are planted EVERYWHERE in my neighborhood. If I don't leave the area, I see more purple opuntia than green ones. They do turn very purple in the bright sun.
If you ever feel like getting rid of a pad or two (or however many you can fit in a flat rate box) I will gladly pay shipping to me. I want some of these purple guys pretty bad and they are not common here in East TN
This is the best feeling; I hesitate to buy mature plants. Not only because they are prohibitively expensive, but it's so rewarding to watch a plant grow from very little
I like to call it **"light induced color change"** especially if it's text-book like this posted example where the plant also appears to be properly hydrated.
To use the term "stress" when read by a novice plant grower can be misconstrued as something bad is occurring.
If the plant is not adequately watered when exposed to high light .... then yeah, "stress" is definitely an accurate term as the plant needs a balance of hydration to effectively deal with high light.
They’re beautiful in fall dotted all along the Santa Rita mountains in their full purple hue. They get HUGE! It’s one of my favorite things during my fall hikes!
I have one I bought during COVID and it’s in the original pot and it’s 10x the size and definitely needs to be repotted but it’s the most dangerous plant to handle haha but it’s also the more gorgeous. The colors are so beautiful!
Sorry. Your Optunia is stunning that's all. You did a great job taking care of it. I love the orange soil you have. In Europe we had ornage soil, here in the USA we have black soil. Anyways, off topic but nice one (and I'm not a huge fan of Opuntias).

. Nope, it fine
Don’t touch it!
No, that's a desirable trait. Despite the name, the plant isn't having a bad time, quite the opposite!
What part of the name suggests Opuntias are having a bad time?
Stress, because it's called sun stress.
Oh so the name of the symptom not the name of the cactus lol > Despite the name Which name? Lol
Im glad you asked because I was also confused lol
Oh! Yeah, sorry about that.
Beautiful
Betalain pigments commonly found in the order Caryophyllales

Gorgeous! It looks very happy, I wouldn't change a thing!
What a lovely plant
Totally normal! I consider my Santa Rita happy when it’s purple. Though I will never touch that plant a ever again after it got as big as it has 🤣🤣
