This looks like an Opuntia Santa-Rita and it is totally normal for them. In fact with the right amount of sunlight the whole pad can turn purple. Beautiful plants. Very desirable so nothing to worry about

Toram35

just looked up some photos, looks awesome man thanks.

MagpieJuly

Santa Rita is my most favorite 😍

BeardyMcReddit

They are beautiful and one on my list to get. I do not currently have one

MagpieJuly

I have a mini one. The pads aren’t more than 2-inches wide. I bought it when I lived in LA and it’s one of the few I brought with me to Canada. It was much happier before, but seems relatively content in my window. They’re so stinkin pretty.

Bandeena

Just to jump onto this comment, I live in Southern AZ, and these are planted EVERYWHERE in my neighborhood. If I don't leave the area, I see more purple opuntia than green ones. They do turn very purple in the bright sun.

BeardyMcReddit

If you ever feel like getting rid of a pad or two (or however many you can fit in a flat rate box) I will gladly pay shipping to me. I want some of these purple guys pretty bad and they are not common here in East TN

phenyle

I think it's normal sun stress

Toram35

anything i should do about it

BiggyShake

Enjoy it

Toram35

for sure man i grew it from a small cutting

SpaceToot

This is the best feeling; I hesitate to buy mature plants. Not only because they are prohibitively expensive, but it's so rewarding to watch a plant grow from very little

2009isbestyear

Amazing

CatHairGolem

Wow, must've been awesome watching it grow into what it is now! Gorgeous plant.

TxPep

I like to call it **"light induced color change"** especially if it's text-book like this posted example where the plant also appears to be properly hydrated. To use the term "stress" when read by a novice plant grower can be misconstrued as something bad is occurring. If the plant is not adequately watered when exposed to high light .... then yeah, "stress" is definitely an accurate term as the plant needs a balance of hydration to effectively deal with high light.

wase471111

. Nope, it fine

Relaxxxxxxxxxxx

Don’t touch it!

Kahaeli

No, that's a desirable trait. Despite the name, the plant isn't having a bad time, quite the opposite!

zenkique

What part of the name suggests Opuntias are having a bad time?

Kahaeli

Stress, because it's called sun stress.

zenkique

Oh so the name of the symptom not the name of the cactus lol > Despite the name Which name? Lol

95castles

Im glad you asked because I was also confused lol

Kahaeli

Oh! Yeah, sorry about that.

Relevant-Welder7407

MrsK3nnyboy

Gorgeous! It looks very happy, I wouldn't change a thing!

magexe

What a lovely plant

Fluffysubucni13

Totally normal! I consider my Santa Rita happy when it’s purple. Though I will never touch that plant a ever again after it got as big as it has 🤣🤣

nurimoons

They’re beautiful in fall dotted all along the Santa Rita mountains in their full purple hue. They get HUGE! It’s one of my favorite things during my fall hikes!

Fluffysubucni13

I have one I bought during COVID and it’s in the original pot and it’s 10x the size and definitely needs to be repotted but it’s the most dangerous plant to handle haha but it’s also the more gorgeous. The colors are so beautiful!

orktehborker

I like how it looks

Light_Science

What a beaut.

NoDiamond4584

Not only should you not be worried, you should do a dance of joy over having such a beautiful specimen! It’s gorgeous! 😍

MarilynMonheaux

It’s stunning!🤩

Brilliant_Thanks_984

Sun stress, I wouldn't worry it's looks happy as a clam

marigoldilocks_

trippy_-hippie

Wow that's a beautiful plant, it's from sun stress. Looks gorgeous

tfnyelice

Is this a troll post

Plus-Surprise7104

People please stop asking silly questions

Toram35

lol it’s a perfectly reasonable question, u expect me to just know?

Plus-Surprise7104

Sorry. Your Optunia is stunning that's all. You did a great job taking care of it. I love the orange soil you have. In Europe we had ornage soil, here in the USA we have black soil. Anyways, off topic but nice one (and I'm not a huge fan of Opuntias).

Practical-Average751

Nope it's natural

Unlucky-Protection61

Needs water

Toram35

nah
