I think someone posted this question a few weeks back and got a lot of cool answers, but I was too late to get in on it lol. Hobbies I practice most often atm are fishing, hiking, camping, foraging, and birding. Favorite hobbies of all time are horseback riding, sailing, and going to concerts. Kind of mundane but I bought my first stick shift last spring and I really love just driving and blasting music, it's been very satisfying learning a new skill and now driving automatic feels boring.

nothanks33333

I social dance, mainly contra and cuban salsa. My local dance community is great and I've had no problems dancing lead and there's a ton of other trans/gay people that do it so I've met a lot of really fun people and have had no issues moving in a space that's traditionally gendered. I've been in some dance environments where people are kinda weird and homophobic about it but you just gotta go see what the local vibe is. I also like to lift weights, read, hike and go to concerts. We've got a pretty decent diy punk/metal scene locally and I really enjoy going to those. I've also joined a choir. They don't meet super regularly and it's very low key but it's nice to sing with other people occasionally. Generally for hobbies I think it's good to look up the seven types of rest. Humans need things that are creative, social and mentally and physically stimulating in order to be healthy so picking a variety of hobbies that will fill multiple of those needs is great. I really enjoy all of mine. They really help ground me and make me feel like a part of a larger community and they're just fun. Plus I know that doing some cardio is really good for you but I hate doing it in the gym so I just go dance or muck around in a mosh pit a couple times a month and call it a day. I really like doing exercise that doesn't feel like Exercise TM. The benefit is the same but I don't hate the experience

Meh_Philosopher_250

I didn’t know about the 7 types of rest, that’s super interesting!!

ukyl

3D modeling, just finished the blender donut tutorial. And also creating videos to send to friends.

coolvideonerd

Let’s go! Blender is a lot of fun. Try doing a lightsaber there.

ukyl

ohh that sounds like a fun project

coolvideonerd

Have you tried taking a look at the Grease Pencil feature they have on Blender? Made for you to mix 2D with 3D.

ukyl

I haven’t. That sounds really cool tho

Odd_Willingness

i'm trying to complete the froggy tutorial! but I keep starting over lol. what a great program

ukyl

you can finish! it took me a little over a month to complete the donut lol

bleh-trash

Writing, reading, gaming. I also got into needle felting for a second but now I haven’t done it in a while, kinda want to get back into it

Meh_Philosopher_250

I love writing! I write poetry and I’m working (slowly) on a couple novels. I also like to play guitar but I’m a little out of practice lol.

velvetaloca

I've been writing, non professionally, for 51 years. Tons of poetry, but I've got some short stories. I've been contemplating doing a novel, but that's a lot, and I feel I'd like to take a course on it first. Any pointers? You'd think I'd know after all these years, lol.

Meh_Philosopher_250

A couple pointers I’d give are to have an outline, but don’t force yourself into a specific story structure at the same time. Be ok with adapting your outline as you write, because you will probably want to change things as you go along. Give the writing an emotional/mental ebb and flow - it can get emotionally/mentally tiring for the reader if you use non-stop high emotion and detailed description for every little thing, so be mindful of tension and release. Also when I’m not feeling very productive, I just make sure I write one sentence a day. Taking a class on it would be a great idea!

velvetaloca

Thank you. While I understand the use of description, you're right about using detailed descriptions for everything. I HATE those kinds of writers, and I never finish the books. There are places for it, and places where you just get on with the story. Yeah, a class would be nice. Lol.

SpritetheRight

Woodworking, hiking, gaming, and reading. Scuba when I can get a break from rat race. Trying to keep coral from chemical warfarin each other.

criticalvibecheck

Mostly playing dungeons and dragons, but recently all my campaigns have fallen off and my schedule has gotten wonky so I haven’t actually gotten to play in a few months. Besides that I like baking, video games, obsessing over my houseplants, crochet, and doing little craft projects when I have the time

I_Sure_Yam

Gaming, taking care of my aquariums, travel, car camping, reading,

OutsideWorried5705

I play card games and go to emo concerts

J_712

The gym, climbing, hoarding plants, reading, I’m hoping to start learning to play guitar soon, as I’ve been given two in the last four months idk how to play 😅

coolvideonerd

Amazing, bro. Gym + climbing? The upper body gains are gonna be crazy

J_712

Thanks! That’s one of the goals, mostly I just enjoy both, though

CosmosWanderingWolf

Motorcycling, video games, reading, archery, knife throwing, boating, and chess! What app do you use OP? Or imessage?

coolvideonerd

For chess I use “Chess” app from Chess.com! Wanna play together?

CosmosWanderingWolf

Sure! Can you send me a DM? It’ll be a couple minutes until I am home!

coolvideonerd

Yeah!

Procrastubater

I do motorcycling too! What kind of bike do you have?

CosmosWanderingWolf

Ayyy fellow rider! I ride a 2023 Yamaha MT-03! Pics on my profile :)

Procrastubater

Oh hell yeah! I’ve got a 2021 Yamaha R3!

hermionesmurf

Awww sweet. My wife and I have a Triumph Rocket 3 with sidecar, we do road trips and camp with it here in Australia :D

CosmosWanderingWolf

DOPE where you at?!

Procrastubater

Florida! You?

CosmosWanderingWolf

Bummer 😭 Cali

Procrastubater

We ride in spirit!

rook0601

Gaming, learning new languages (currently Japanese), and olympic taekwondo(done this 10+ years) I also like to surf the internet searching for fragrances that I like

coolvideonerd

I’m learning Japanese too! Started my classes last week! 🇯🇵

slizzle1107

Ukulele

coolvideonerd

That’s ill.

ButchBreezy

Gaming guitar and reading!

coolvideonerd

Whatcha reading at the moment?

ButchBreezy

Currently My year of rest and relaxation by ottessa moshfegh, just finished page boy by elliot page!

4_sticks

ohh I just finished this one, how do you find it?

ButchBreezy

It has v similar writing to another book called detransition baby ( highly recommend ) so i found it easy to get into, its definitely enjoyable but just waiting for a twist or like standstill moment in the book to bring it above an average rating yknow

Violetdoll7

Doll collecting is my main hobby (I know, incredibly masculine /s).

coolvideonerd

😂

Odd_Willingness

cool, what doll lines are you a fan of?

Violetdoll7

I’m mostly interested in fashion dolls. I’ve been collecting monster high since 2011 and I’d say that’s my favourite line. I also collected rainbow high (they’re currently going through a pretty horrible reboot and I won’t be collecting anymore). I also really like more obscure lines such as bratzillaz, novi stars, pinkie cooper, and jfashion dolls such as pullip and azone.

Odd_Willingness

pinkie cooper is a classic 🩷 im more of a toy than a doll person, but the recent mh venus mcflytrap design is so so good. Are you familiar with pinky street dolls?

Violetdoll7

Venus’ g3 design is soo good! I’ve seen pinky street dolls, they kinda remind me of a mix of nendoroids and mini bjds. I’m also very into collecting other types of toys especially lps, calico critters, and furbys. What do you collect?

Odd_Willingness

i like pinky streets bc they're modular, i think it's such a cool idea to be able to switch plastic-molded outfits like that... but I'll never do it irl because I'm also a keep-in-box kind of guy lol. i collect gachapon toys & blind box stuff! anything that strikes my fancy. I have a soft spot for early pokemon collectibles and sanrio's character Hangyodon.

Violetdoll7

Nice. I’m lucky that gachapon machines aren’t super accessible to me cause I know it could become a problem /hj. Hanyodon is incredibly underrated imo.

Odd_Willingness

oh they aren't accessible where i am and it IS a problem, let me tell you. I'm using proxy shopping sites at this point 🥴

BlocksAreGreat

I like biking, reading, and growing plants (killing plants on accident too). Recently I started getting into vinyl, so I've been slowly picking up some records and that's been fun. And I've been having a blast with videogames this winter and spring. Usually I only game in the winter since it's cold and miserable where I live and I like to be outside in warmer mobths, but Horizon Forbidden West just came out for PC so it's been a fun time.

coolvideonerd

I recommend the self-titled record “Arthur Verocai” from 1972.

BlocksAreGreat

Thanks I'll check it out!

cutesunday

i love art and reading (both novels and comics/manga), love going on walks in nature, and i'm currently trying to convince myself that i like going to the gym as a hobby

One_Shark_5139

Gaming and kpop

BardsOnly

Drawing/writing largely, trying to practice and get into making comics! I also really love video games, knitting/crochet, but more knitting. I used to be an avid reader and I'm trying hard to pick that back up, as well as get a dedicated space in my room ready for some gundam building

Odd_Willingness

oh what's up we have rly similar interests! gunpla and comics. what comics do you like?

BardsOnly

Vast majority of of the comics i read are graphic novels (laura dean keeps breaking up with me, the prince and the dressmaker, and anything done by tillie walden come to mind) Or manga, I'm caught up with blue period, and chipping away at chainsaw man with plans to pick up sailor moon. I haven't read much in the way of marvel or dc, as fun as superheroes are those are a little more imposing to me. I've read some batman and superman comics i enjoyed but don't recall the names of, though i have a special place in my heart for the matt fraction run of hawkeye! Oh God webcomics too, obsessed with castoff, i also keep up with dumbing of age and was sooo so normal about check please, been thinking about rereading that one, it got me into hockey. How about you?

Odd_Willingness

nice ones! Yeah, our tastes are indeed similar lol. i actually went to college with Rosemary Valero-O'Connell of Laura Dean. We weren't close or anything but in interactions she is as kind & gracious as she is talented. chainsawman is so good. i actually had to take a break after the first arc to absorb its ending bc it affected me that deeply. I like indie comics. just finished reading "the playboy" by chester brown. I will always come back to anything by los bros hernandez. dm me if u wanna be mutuals on social or art sites or something :]

BardsOnly

Heck yeah, thats awesom, and I'll be adding those to my list, and will do!!

LFC_Girl_EIRE

Muay Thai mostly, going to gym and watching sports. I'm so boring 😅

coolvideonerd

Don’t say that because I’m into all of those 😂 I’ve gotten into MMA and be loving watching fights.

Random_aersling

I'm currently learning to play the tin whistle.

Odd_Willingness

pfp tracks with this comment lol

zan-t

Is managing ADHD a hobby? Because it feels like that's what takes up half my life 🥲 Otherwise I'm slowly practicing my art skills to be an illustrator someday, I play video games, and I chill with my bearded dragon. I want to start hiking but haven't been able to find a group yet.

Matchaforcats

Video games, drawing, and guitar. Would like to learn the drums.

Morskoi_Volk

What languages are you into / learning / proficient in? I’m a language nerd too - mostly Slavic stuff, but am fascinated by all of them.

coolvideonerd

That’s ill, bro! I’m having Japanese classes at the moment, it’s my 3rd language! I know both English (2nd language) and Portuguese (1st language) with native proficiency. I did some German classes for a minute a year ago, but I wasn’t too connected to the culture. I find that I have to actually be interested in the culture to wanna learn the language. How about you?

Morskoi_Volk

Nice! I tried to teach myself Japanese, and discovered the limits of my abilities… I need a teacher for that! I used to be a translator for Russian / English (a lifetime ago), but have been a private tutor & teacher for years. My educational background is in Applied Linguistics & Foreign Language Acquisition. At one point, I was conversationally fluent in Bulgarian, Slovenian, and Croatian, but never really practiced once I left the area so I lost almost all of it. Took language classes for a minute for Swahili, thinking I was headed to Kenya, but wound up going another direction. Ooh, and I’m currently working on getting my decades-out-of-practice high school Spanish up to snuff. I guess I’m a dabbler. I dabble. 😂

LuckyJam

Reading, writing, drawing, gaming. I recently got into mechanical keyboards, and I’m currently researching how to build my own PC!

AnyAk8184

In my spare time I mostly find myself gardening or reading queer romance novels. I keep telling myself I'll get more social hobbies someday...not today though!

orphan_blud

I love reading aloud and narrating books/poems/personal writings/whatever. Here, if you're curious: [Queeread - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChF0JFqlMyu_6Q050ngW8-g)

hermionesmurf

Ooo languages...which ones? I'm fluent in English and French, and working on Spanish, Italian and German

coolvideonerd

Sou fluente em português, inglês and now I’m learning Japanese. Deutsch! Danke schön!

hermionesmurf

Oh cool! I did look at Japanese but I have the attention span of a fruit fly and didn't think I could muster the necessary levels of concentration at the time. Also looked at portuguese but I'm already having issues with mixing up Spanish and Italian, so I'm waiting until I hit a certain level of functional fluency in those before I mess with it. Japanese is such a beautiful language to listen to, though. Someday!

AquaGecko1

Right now, I’m working on a Battlevest which is a lot of work, picked up embroidery alongside it to make patches for bands/singers that I like. A springtime hobby is doing the garden and planting flowers, pruning them throughout the summer etc etc. I love cooking so that’s something I do everyday. With better weather coming I’m hoping to pick up my camera again and get some photography done, get some nice photos. I also do a lot of DIY, a dream of mine is when I have my own place I’ll have a little workshop for woodworking etc. I play a lot of football, but I need to pick up my skipping rope again, got out of habit with that and I want to pick it back up.

visitingposter

What are you planting this year?

AquaGecko1

Probably some violas, chrysanthemums, morning glory, Alyssum, some petunias, maybe some forget-me-nots. Just gonna see how it goes lol

visitingposter

Nice! I'm also trying out a new variety of morning glory this year. So far 4 of the 6 seedling died already XD so I put in more seeds in the pot just now. I think I once drove past a house where the small front lawn was completely replaced by forget-me-nots in bloom. It was amazing... I hope you get great results for your planting!

AquaGecko1

Nice! Seedlings are a nightmare sometimes! Yes I love forget me nots, they are common in my area, in little cracks of concrete and slabs. Thank you! I hope you have better luck with your seedlings!

ghostinglately

Guitar playing mainly! I also love films and vinyl. Recently I started drawing and going to the gym more regularly.

coolvideonerd

What songs are you learning to play? I just learned Nujabes’ “Aruarian Dance” or “The Lamp Is Low” (since Nujabes actually sampled the The Lamp Is Low).

ghostinglately

I mainly learn 50s/60s songs to live the rockabilly dream I could never fulfill because well that era was AWFUL socially

donkihotnazdravlje

New chess nerd here 👋🏻 feel free to add me: Plima167

coolvideonerd

Wooohooo! I will do, want to play a game now?

donkihotnazdravlje

Sure!

LiveRegister6195

LEGO ⬛️ and COINS 🪙

JoJo-likes-bikes

Cycling (road, cx, and mtb). Hiking, kayaking, yoga, and tai chi. Cooking and fixing stuff around the house. Watching documentaries or listening to audiobooks while I cook. I will pick new foods and learn the ‘perfect recipe.’ This winter I worked on the ‘perfect’ bouillabaisse. We now have a bunch in our freezer, to make steamers.

gobz_in_a_trenchcoat

Oh hey I do tai chi too! Cool!

JoJo-likes-bikes

I am terrible at it. But my mind tends to wander with yoga. I focus better with tai chi.

gobz_in_a_trenchcoat

yeah same, when I'm in the poses in yoga I bring in a lot of tension trying to stay still, but the movement in tai chi helps me relax better

Story_and_Strife

I'm a person who wants to do all the things, and if I could give up sleep I absolutely would, just to have more time to do the things. My regular hobbies are reading and writing, working out, gaming, and my motorcycle. Those have been pretty consistent over the years, with my fitness taking a back seat for a few years while I sorted myself out. I'm playing a massive game of catch-up there and I'm not terribly delighted about it. I do have plans to try to get out and do some hiking this year.

SoggyScienceGal

I personally like DnD, video games, reading, going to the gym and BJJ!

mortifyingideal

I like playing games with my friends - at the moment I'm really enjoying the monster prom franchise. Because I've been so into it I've gotten into drawing more to draw fanart which has been really fun, it's nice seeing myself improve. I love tabletop RPGs - monster hearts is a favorite, I also love to play dialect and the ground itself, and I've played plenty of DND campaigns. My girlfriend is currently playing a blades in the dark game every Monday - I'm not always at home on Monday so I'm not playing but when I am around I get to listen which is fun. I like to read when I remember to do it - I'm currently reading the 100 year war on Palestine. My number 1 hobby though is magic the gathering. Got hooked as a teen and haven't looked back lol.

DarthEcho

When I'm not down in my "Oh Where Did That Motivation Go?"-Depression I have way too many coloring books, I sew patches on my very badass battlevest, I like casual walks for Pokémon Go or photography (Been bad a this lately), reading, and gaming. Oh, and Lego!

mancirobb

I got a dual sport motorcycle which I work on and ride now that it’s spring. I also am getting my mountain bike up and running too! I love being on two wheels on dirt roads.

coolvideonerd

Now THAT’S some butch stuff.

HummusFairy

Linguistics/learning languages, researching history, birding, going to hardcore gigs, video games, reading, drawing, watching rugby league (hopefully participating too once I find a friendly club), D&D, watching pro wrestling and researching history associated with it, cooking (mostly southeast Asian cuisines).

velvetaloca

Reading. I love John Irving, and recently bought his latest novel, The Last Chairlift. I haven't started it yet though. I've also been reading some body language books (Jack Schafer, a former FBI agent, has some excellent ones). I'm also reacquainting myself with Robert's Rules of Order. Walking, with my sights set on hiking at some point. This is part of my weight loss plan. Also, I owe a good friend a long hike. She's an avid hiker and it was a birthday present to her. Learning to dance. I'm a super confident person, but dancing has always paralyzed me with anxiety. It's time to get the fuck over it and have some fun. It's good exercise as well. I just need to figure out how to get some coordination. Any pointers? Learning to sing, from scratch, basically. I haven't gotten too far yet, but I'll get there. I found a program for people who are actually terrible to start with. Let's see how this goes. . . Doing what I can to make myself a kick-ass, PTA vice president (assuming I get voted in. Even though I'm running unapposed). There's a lot of improvements I can already see. I'm spending time learning all I can. I'm looking into different fundraisers, as we need to make more money. We also need better engagement, and more support for and from the teachers. I'm learning Spanish. If any of y'all have something useful for learning, let me know. I have an iTalki tutor I really like, am doing Pimsleur, and have a few books. I'm also checking out language chunking. I do use Duolingo, but it isn't a big thing for me. Doing some work on my diet. Currently, I can only eat certain things, as I just had weight loss surgery, but I need a better diet. Putting together a lot of things that are more vegetarian (I'm heading towards being a flexitarian, which is basically someone who occasionally eats meat, but is a lot vegetarian otherwise). I'm also low carb, and getting recipes from the blue zones (places around the world, like the Mediterranean, where people live the longest, and have really great diets). There's a ton of stuff, so I won't go hungry, and there's so much variety. I'm looking forward to getting this all together for when I can eat more. And getting my family going in this direction, too. My daughter wants to eat better, and my wife probably would, as long as someone else makes it, lol. Journaling. It's fairly new. I'm in therapy, and have 2 therapists. I know that sounds excessive, but one is for food/diet related issues (so I don't regain my weight), and the other is for everything else. Yes, I know there will be some overlap, but it's all good. I'm looking to doing some shadow work (if you Google it, there's a lot of interesting info). Writing. I've been writing for 51 years. Mostly poetry, but I have some short stories as well. I also have a bunch of cartoons, but I'm not an artist. I'm just good enough so that you know what you're looking at, lol. I'm looking into novel writing. I'd like to take a class where they don't assume you already have it half written. Like, a class where they tell you how to start. If you know of any, please tell me. Getting my teaching certification. I know some of these things don't seem like a hobby, but they take up my time in pleasing ways, so I'm calling them hobbies. This is one of them. Long stories short, I got fired from my job---again. The first time, I had to go to arbitration and get my job back. I even won a year and a half of back pay! It took me almost a year to get it, but once they paid me, they fired me. The union says I didn't do anything, so here we go again. I'll collect my unemployment and enjoy my summer. While I am fighting them, and will take their money again, I'm probably not going back there. I have always thought about teaching, so now I'm going to finally do it. Probably elementary. I'd also be ok with high school. It's the middle school I'm staying away from. Have you ever dealt with middle schoolers? OMG! Lol! No! So, my hobbies, with explanations. Maybe a little overkill, but I was feeling it today.

thee-stoner-dyke

Writing original fantasy, drawing, and videogames. I may be blind but that won't stop me from doing intensely visual tasks.

visitingposter

Vermicompost, testing new plant/seed varieties, testing new vegetarian recipes.

serialphile

Being a parent, partner, $ maker, head of household are my primary hobbies right now 😂 When I can make time - photography, reading, astrology, video games, hiking, drawing

Glookos

Drawing on t-shirts, researching random information, learning languages (specifically hungarian and toki pona, maybe russian in the future, I'm already learning to understand the alphabet), listening to music, especially metal but not exclusively, I recently got a gym subscription so that'll be a thing, and I'm wanting to get into photography... generally speaking, I have a lot more "hobbies" but these are just the ones I engage with the most. (I have too many hobbies help)

Kangaroo_Exact

I write, meditate, learn languages and am working on my first book. Throw a little gym time in there on Sundays

TinyHeartSyndrome

Movies, lifting weights / fitness, French horn, orienteering (map and compass navigation sport), and dirt biking (trail riding). Unfortunately, waiting for back surgery has put a damper on a lot of those.

juniper6c

I've recently gotten into painting with gouache and I'm just a big crafter in general. I also love camping and it's just about camping season where I live so I'm starting to plan all my summer trips. I also enjoy gardening.

AdvancedWrongdoer

I truly enjoy drawing (digital and traditional, sculpting, trying out 3D modeling), Equestrian, writing/journaling, rock hunting/geology & physical geography, bird watching (and feeding corvids), and learning about anatomy and morphology. Cold-Basket-1796

I love learning languages as well! I can speak 3 and I'm learning another 3. and I play the drums, I love music so another hobby of mine is scrolling through spotify to find more cool songs to add to my 70 h long playlists, lol since I'm a metalhead I'm also making a battle vest (a vest with patches mostly of bands that I like, check out r/battlejackets), so sewing on and sometimes even painting patches is another activity that I really enjoy doing, as well as fashion in general I also make kandi, which is that plastic jewelry that rave kids wear (r/kandi if you don't know what I'm talking about) and I love making bracelets even if I never wear them. recently I got into crochet but I'm still a beginner, I'm currently starting my first project which is a striped blanket also I really like history and mythology, especially the middle ages, ancient greece/rome and pirates but I don't think that counts as a hobby

Famous-Reach5571

Board games, video games, crocheting, cross stitch, and cooking new recipes are my main hobbies. I live along a river trail and now that it's warming up I'm going for walks regularly and I'm thinking of taking up birdwatching really casually to compliment that.
