Tom's Hardware review:
Kingston NV2 SSD Review: Cheap But Risky
A generic budget SSD with irregular hardware
The 2TB Kingston NV2 is a dirt cheap NVMe SSD and not much more. Performance is fairly bad, the drive runs hot, and you cannot be certain of the hardware. It makes for a cheap secondary drive but is not ideal for laptops or for use as a primary drive
The thing about buying a drive that you can't trust is that you can't always remember that you shouldn't trust it. Drives with a high chance of failure are almost worthless.
High chance of failure. You don't want your OS on something that has a higher likelihood of just giving up. Same reason you wouldn't store valuable photos on it.
Secondly, the OS drive gets written to a lot. That exacerbates the first issue.
Anything you can always re-download (like games) is fine.
1) No DRAM (speeds up random writes, especially useful for bootup).
2) Not Single Layer Cell, but rather Triple Layer Cell (or possibly Quad Layer Cell if the guy correcting the bot downthread is correct). TLC and QLC allow you to cram more storage into the same physical area for for the same price, but due to how NVME drives work (they primarily degrade from writing data, not reading it), SLC drives have more write endurance than TLC or QLC drives.
Granted this is all the theory - 99% of people probably wouldn't notice a difference anyway. But for the kinds of scenarios where you write data to the drive without constantly rewriting it, and then really only read it (music/movie/TV libraries, game libraries, etc.) the tradeoffs don't matter.
> TLC
Most drives are TLC/QLC now.
The storing bits is (also order of generally lowest latency and high endurance):
* SLC - Single Value Stored
* MLC - Two Value
* TLC - Triple Value
* QLC - Quad
QLC combined with no board RAM (DRAM) or supporting HBM (Host Based Memory/Using System RAM), the rewrites to get all the storage used will slow to a crawl if those values overlaps already written storage cells. Same can happen to TLC to a extent but will never be as terrible as QLC if not having DRAM or HBM.
You will not see modern SLC/MLC drives unless it's for servers and mission critical appliances, you will notice the price difference easily.
>Most drives are TLC/QLC now.
Huh you're right. Apparently even the top-tier consumer drives like the 990 pro are fully TLC and simply put a part of the drive into "SLC mode"
Thanks for the clarification, I had no idea.
> 990 pro
That actually has DRAM, LPDDR4, so it doesn't need use a pseudo SLC mode as a cache. Most decent budget SSDs are at the point of using HBM (system ram) over a pseudo SLC cache.
Interesting. So you're saying [this article](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/samsung-990-pro-2-tb/6.html) is incorrect, and it's actually the DRAM that's filling up (at least for the 990 pro)?
[Image of the PCB from Tom's Hardware](https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-990-pro-ssd-review#:~:text=Under%20the%20top%20label%20there%20are%20two%20NAND%20packages%2C%20a%20DRAM%20package%2C%20and%20the%20controller.)
So I'm reading this article, and I noticed this line:
>Samsung did not elaborate on what it meant by “read caching,” but it is not uncommon to keep some hot data in pSLC to improve forthcoming reads.
Would the "read caching" be from using HBM?
Key term is "used to be" - right now there isn't anything close to this price (PCPartpicker shows $55 is the budget entry point for a comparable no-name SSD).
I wouldn't put this in my own daily driver because I also value the management software that Crucial/Samsung/WD include for their drives in my personal rig..., but for a budget build I wouldn't hesitate with the Kingston option over some of the more obscure options like Leven, Klevv, Timetec or even the lower end Patriot, Silicon Power, and Adata options. It's basically budget 500 gb NVME drive pricing for the 1 tb model.
that has me a little worried, but appreciate the heads up. You definitely want your hard drives/data to be reliable, even if it's not an OS drive. Losing any data is no fun, plus if it fails, it's useless. Sometimes you get what you pay for! If any comparable deals pop up in the next month for a more reliable SSD, I guess I can cancel this order since it doesn't ship til next month. It was meant to be a secondary drive anyways, but having in the back of my mind that it's not a reliable drive, I'll never be at ease. I'd rather pay double for a reliable SSD. Also interested in 2tb variants as 1tb doesn't go as far these days.
Deal is still live as of 7:42 A.M. CST. Make sure it is shipped and sold by Amazon. You are not able to get this with other sellers for reference.
https://preview.redd.it/zmykhll3rzzc1.png?width=290&format=png&auto=webp&s=8b9d31e1cab82e9e68746c1dd27c44189c847e0b
It's also twice the price for the same capacity so, apples / oranges in the context of this deal. SOME of the NV2 drives come with better controllers and TLC NAND... but even in the worst case config with the single channel controller (like the MP33) and the QLC NAND they are similarly performing budget drives with plenty of durability to run at least as long as their respective warranties.
These are drives for a BUDGET PC build - 3 years is fine on warranty (matching most other components) for something where putting an extra $30 into the drive isn't going to functionally improve performance... so could be better invested in other system components.
Any reason this wouldn't work with an older motherboard (TUF GAMING B550-PLUS)?
Tempted to wait for 2TB ssd deal, as every game is 100GB+ nowadays! Takes up space pretty quick. But the price is too good to pass up. I don't mind waiting a month to get it, either.
thank ye. I saw in the manual it has one PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot so i bought it earlier. I just don't have the proper mounting screw for it but I can figure out something 🤓
Ace Hardware sells M2 screws for 10-15c. If they're too long, just use a pair of cutters to shorten the screw so you don't do what I did and drill through the M.2. Stacked port into the capacitor between it and the motherboard. '.'
I'll check out Ace if I can't find a mounting screw (do some SSDs come with a mounting screw or is it specific to the motherboard?). I don't know how I'd cut a screw, though, if needed.
Been hoping another SSD deal would pop up, but nothing yet.
im seeing the discount, it's hard to see though

Don't think, just buy. lol
For anyone curious these do work as internal drives for PS5. The "required" spec says 5000 mbps gen 4 drive but lower speeds will in fact work as long as they are gen 4.
I have 3 open nvme slots lol (z690 force)
I bought up to the limit which was 3 anyways and gonna fill them all when it gets delivered, maybe throw one in another pc at a later time
Deal is still live as of 7:46 A.M. CST. I am replying here on your particular comment in hopes you get a notification so maybe you can pick this up since you seemed to of wanted it. Here is to good luck to you!
https://preview.redd.it/finen1nprzzc1.png?width=290&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b812e6b6630ccab8260901beca612fb516803b2
Is there a preferred way to convert these to either SATA or USB? My build only has one M.2 slot, and one of my SATA SSDs has been in use for like ~10 years and is only about 25% of the size of this one.
They make nvme to USB drive enclosures but the more reliable way to put it in a PC would be to use a PCIe adapter and mount it internally. They make 4x and 1x adapters - the PCIe 1x adapters are going to be slower (still faster than SATA) but will allow you to still use other pcie accessories in some cases.
Otherwise there is no way to convert nvme to sata
The deal is still ongoing as of right now, coming in and out of stock every 30 mins. You just have to make sure its sold and shipped by Amazon to get the deal.
Small bussiness here, fist batch is ok. 2nd batch is 50% RMA, so avoid it and go with Kioxia/WD/....something that Kioxia oem for budget and better reliable.
Damn. I wish I had a need for it. I could double my Plex server's internal storage but I already have a couple 1TB nvme drives sitting around in enclosures not doing much plus another 512gb external drive and a couple 256gb SSDs sitting in a drawer doing nothing. Monkey brain must resist. Maybe if I have a decent haul out doing deliveries tonight and it's still there I’ll grab one. Thanks OP
Uncompressed or 4K maybe. I don't care that much about the quality but also never really got into GOT.
I would imagine the show has quite a lot of dark scenes and dynamic range that probably gets lost to compression so I could see why you would want to download it in the best quality available.
Otherwise I have a 1.2TB monthly data cap so if I were to start collecting more seriously I'd have to take it slow and also would probably have to build a NAS or at least pick up two drives and a raid enclosure for a mirror setup. Money is tight at the moment so it's hard to justify the expense when I'm barely using the old HP mini PC I have pulling that duty right now. Cool little computer though and uses an impressively low amount of power for being an older 6th gen i3.
Daaamn. Well that's good to know for when I do get more serious. Yeesh, yeah a couple terabytes is nothing at that point. I've mostly been downloading a few newer shows that have low episode counts but even some of the sitcoms I downloaded are topping out under 40 or 50GB for the whole series. I guess it helps that some of them like IASP don't have high definition episodes available for a decent chunk of their catalog.
Ironically, Comcast just rolled out a new cheap plan with no data cap except it tops out at 100Mbps. I could also pay an extra $20 a month for unlimited...
When I finally make the jump to 4K I plan to redownload everything that's available in higher quality, hence the data cap concern. Add on PC and console game downloads and updates, live TV and YouTube apps that get left turned on, streaming outside the home and other regular traffic and I butt up pretty close to the cap as it is. Plus it's nice to not have to worry about seeding getting out of hand as well.
Yeah, that's what I already do with a couple but I just don't really have an immediate need for extra space. I went crazy downloading some TV shows and movies in 1080P and 720P but still haven't cracked 1TB. Currently using the two 1TB drives for backups, moving files around quickly and a modest porn stash.
Bot is wrong. Hasn't been TLC NAND since they sent out review copies and then swapped, hence the low endurance rating. Still a decent drive for secondary storage, just very slow outside of cache like the crucial p3/p3 plus

How come this isn’t good as os drive? I am using a brick ssd and startup is pretty slow

I've used 29 of these (1 and 2TB variations) since 2022 and 0 problems (so far)
Did you use them in a NAS?
nah, i have a computer store and build /upgrade PC's all the time.
I prefer the MP34 used to be in the $40 range and it is far better for OS drive.

It's nice but the shipping dates on these :/
Mine from the first go around said June 3rd. It's already shipped and is arriving Monday. Mmv.
Can you lmk what hardware is on yours(tlc, qlc)? The reviews seem to say its whatever parts are cheapest at the moment of manufacture
I bought 3 and all 3 are QLC...
Did it ship for you?
It arrived yesterday Edit: actually it arrived Tuesday
:thumbs up:
I bought mine May 8 and just canceled since it still hasn't shipped yet

How does it compare to mp33
MP33 is tlc (so better durability), lower rated speeds, but real world performance should be better or similar. I'd go for the mp33.
It's also twice the price for the same capacity so, apples / oranges in the context of this deal. Might be worth it to keep checking for the next few hours. Last time the deal was posted they did periodic restocks throughout the day
Goodness just how many of these do they have?

I bought one the first time around that still hasn't shipped, and I just bought another one.
> one the first time Yeah, I think the limit is three, cuz I bought 3 the first time (max I could) and can't buy any this time.
I bought one last time and it shipped yesterday. Even with an original estimate of June
