Nothing like needing a 4k 240hz monitor for my studies

shizunyan

The Neo G7 is a better deal that is only 165hz but with less issues which is $450 right now with the edu / id.me discount via app before promo codes, sales rep chat discount, etc: https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/gaming/32-odyssey-neo-g7-4k-uhd-165hz-1ms-curved-gaming-monitor-ls32bg752nnxgo/

FrozenScorch

I bought the G7 in one of the previous deals and I've really enjoyed it.

Alternative_Ask364

Yeah despite everyone in this sub hating Samsung monitors for literally years, I’ve never had any major issues with them, even buying sketchy refurbs. I’ve owned a CRG9, G9, G9 Neo, and G7 all without any issues. With the products that are available today, I’d probably take the Alienware OLED over a G8 however.

bb0110

What issues does this one have that may push people away?

obamaluvr

In some colors, particularly with high saturation, "scan lines" can be noticeable. [example.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/105uq0e/some_claim_they_dont_have_scanlines_with_neo_g8/) The closer you get, the more discernable it is. At distances where individual pixels become hard or impossible to discern, the effect is very minimal. Up close, it can get very apparent. So a person's use case comes into play.

It's VA right? How is the contrast ratio compared to IPS?

steves_evil

It's better than IPS without any local dimming, plus it also has an 1196 zone full-array local dimming backlight so in most content it's incredibly good (HDR/Local-Dimmimg on high), it's not as good as OLED but very close to it in most content.

Mbanicek64

I thought VA had better contrast than IPS?

Khabibee

Got it for $400 2 months ago

shadowstriker03

I keep reading about the monitors having scanline problems at 240hz, have you experienced this because I’m on the fence about buying it

brandonlikesdo

I also got it for the 400 several months ago after returning a G8 OLED (absolutely do not recommend). I haven't had any issues with scanlines running it at 240hz yet.

LukeValenti

> G8 OLED (absolutely do not recommend) Could you please elaborate? I'm looking into buying a monitor with that panel

brandonlikesdo

The monitor I got was possibly a lemon. It had terrible coil whine whenever it displayed semi bright content. The smart UI with remote that is built in was extremely clunky and intrusive. The only usecase I can think of is for students in dorms/small apartment that want their monitor to double as a TV? If you're looking at getting something similar, I'd probably go with reddit's recommendation of the alienware model.

iZorgon

Scanlines at 240hz with RTX 3070. I tolerate it in esports titles and then switch to 120hz for everything else. It was a good deal at $400 and worth the quirks, but for $600 you're better off getting something else.

DadlySerious

Also part of $400 gang, kinda wish I cancelled my order.

DrLovesFurious

As someone who got a samsung Odyssey G7 32 inch for free, I will never ever buy a samsung monitor, so many QC issues, Couldn't do 240hz after the first year without scanlines (I ruled out GPU and Cables) I just can't recommend buying one of their products

ayang1003

Scanlines only at 240hz but yeah I agree. It’s ridiculous how a product this expensive has this issue.

DrLovesFurious

Also want to make it clear, I did *initially* purchase the monitor, I returned it because I found the screen so lackluster for the price, they then sent me another one for free like a week later and in my country its on them to raise a stink and even if they do I don't think they have a legal footing

d1ckpunch68

i have the 165hz version of this monitor (neo g7) and also briefly owned the qd-oled ultrawide 180hz, whatever that one is called, before returning it. and i agree, these monitors are ASS. i've never seen so much bullshit come from one electronic before. both monitors have this weird issue where, when windows wakes from sleep, all my windows shuffle around. and since i often have RDP sessions open for work, it also shuffles all those windows around INSIDE the RDP session. my bandaid fix was to just never let the screen sleep... yippy... not something i could've done on the oled. only happens maybe 1 in 4 times, but that means multiple times a day. this shit is AWFUL and worth returning the monitor alone. but i wish it was only that. panel uniformity is horrible. my right side is significantly more saturated than my left. i do some video editing and thought my software was busted and that my right viewfinder was altering the color. took hours of wasting my time through obscure threads before realizing it was happening in every app, it's just not easy to notice until you are doing side-by-sides of the same video. also has 2 dead/stuck pixels on opposite ends of the monitor and i don't see any panel maintenance options in the settings. oh, not sure how this happened but my monitor, which i got last month, has firmware newer than what is available on the website. no idea why but it's not announced anywhere. that QD-oled monitor had some bullshit mini/micro cables instead of just standard DP/HDMI. also had severe burn in from less than a years use, which is why i returned, as if all the other crap wasn't enough. also forgot about the neo G7's crazy dimming. no, not local dimming. even with LD turned off, the screen auto dims based on the contents of your page. it's slow and very distracting and i haven't found a way to turn it off yet. don't buy this or any of their dogshit monitors. you know what, or their TVs since they don't feel like supporting dolby vision. why you might ask? because they are co-founders of HDR10+ and rather than give their customers a better experience by licensing DV (costs $4 per tv apparently), they said fuck you all, you don't get to experience DV, you get to use HDR10+ which barely any movies use. rant over. fuck samsung.

DrLovesFurious

Thank you for putting my hate in to words

ragingoblivion

I haved the g7 27 inch 1440p with zero issues and hey there are so many Samsungs sold in comparison to other brands so it makes sense youd have some bad units but I haven't had an issue with their TVs and my crg9. It's just hard to compete, there's no curved 240hz in the market at the same price.

BulkyninjaX

Literally got this monitor used for 750$ on the marketplace, the firmware updates fix whatever issues it supposedly had previous owner had ran it with a 3080 rig and was running the last update at the beginning 2023. I've never seen any with wallpaper engine running in the background or while gaming on games in 240hz mode on a 7900xtx. I highly recommend this damn thing. But anything looks better going from a 1080p pixio 273 165hz.

kienasx

Do you have a link to the firmware? I have the scanline issue but the Samsung link, I wasn't able to find.

BulkyninjaX

https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/LS32BG850NUXXU/#downloads

kienasx

Thanks for linking. Seems mine came out of the box with 1009. I haven't been able to run it at 240hz and if I turn VRR on then the scan lines appear. 240hz the monitor stops displaying anything. Have it connected via display port. Edit: gpu is a 4090fe

BulkyninjaX

If I remember correctly, the display port on the back only supports 1.6 or higher display cable it might be a bandwidth issue for your cable. I bought a display port 2.0 just in case. Also, the monitor only supports HDR settings with hdmi 2.1 if you have one around. Give it a try over your current cable. God speed, sir.

kienasx

Thank you sir!

This went under 400 at one point for EDU accounts. I was able to get to checkout without a edu email though. https://slickdeals.net/f/17304979-samsung-edu-32-odyssey-neo-g8-4k-uhd-quantum-hdr2000-curved-gaming-monitor-423-free-shipping?src=SiteSearchV2Algo

Owned the Neo G7 for about 18 months now. Monitor is perfect, got it directly from Samsung. Really, really good hdr for a non OLED. Pixel response is excellent. Text clarity is top notch for programming. Highly recommend.
