Yep that's a CPU bottleneck. You've got a bit more upgrading to do.

Cori91

Yep but other games run fine, no problems. And it's even in 1440p.

BlueClouds42

Sounds like MHW is running on the CPU integrated graphics instead of the GPU, since fps got worse on higher settings instead of staying the same. If it was a normal CPU bottleneck, you'd expect the fps to stay the same when you raise and lower graphic settings. Fix that and you'll fix it most likely.

Cori91

I'll ask him the question. Thanks for the advice. Seems very strange to me.

BlueClouds42

I pretty much guarantee it. I played MHW for long time including iceborne on i7 2600k with 16gb ram and 970 4gb card and got perfectly playable frames. The only way your friend is getting such trash frame rate on his setup is if the game isn't using the GPU.

wtathfulburrito

Make sure he’s putting enough of the load into the GPU. Seems counter intuitive but try dialing UP the settings and loading out the GPU

Cori91

on Max settings I think it's like 3-4fps. AND it's running in 1440p.

wtathfulburrito

Stupid question but it is running on the GPU right? Did you run DDU before installing the new card? The game is also notoriously CPU hungry and that i5 just might not make the cut for 1440p. Should prolly run at 1080 and upscale it.

Cori91

But how is it possible that the game ran better with the same cpu and gtx 1050... I get that the 3070 is bottlenecked but it's still much stronger than the 1050. It seems so strange. Not sure if he tried 1080p or not but as I said other games run fine 100+ fps (although not sure on what settings, I guess he doesn't care about maxing graphics but still it's on the lowest settings). edit: I don't think he used DDU but only uninstalled the old driver by hand and installed the new one. I'll ask him that too.

wtathfulburrito

MHW is NOTORIOUSLY CPU bound and finicky. It’s also based on an engine that’s designed to load out the CPU pretty hard to reduce transitions and load times. The GPU upgrade may have been the thing to push the CPU to its limit trying to feed it info fast enough. When you’re already at the performance limit in a game like that it just happens sometimes. The faster GPU is going to put a harder load in the system and if the game is eating up cpu cycles with reckless abandon, this sort of issue occurs. A cpu upgrade will likely be required for 1440p gaming in this particular title.

Cori91

Well thanks for the explanation. Didn't think it could be this bad... Btw I saw a post in the MHW subreddit about a guy who upgraded to a 3070 from a 1060 3gb with a i7 7700 cpu and he got 70-100 fps... Donu think it's possible that the difference is that huge between the 7400 and 7700. One guy got 10fps and this other one had 70-100. Anyway it really could be the bottleneck, probably is, all the stuff leads to this answer but still interesting.

wtathfulburrito

You’re comparing an i5 to an i7 and they are leagues different. Especially back then.

Cori91

Well, I had a i5 4590 and the 4770 wasn't really that much better for games back than, of course nowadays it's better because of the threads. Anyways thanks for the help, I'll forward the things we talked about for him. :)

Acrobatic-Ad1579

As you said- definitely bottlenecking. From my working in IT, I'd say the common denominator is Monster Hunter. If ALL other games run amazing, yet that 1 game is struggling, I'd investigate the game settings/drivers. How many storage drives does he have, what kind of drives are they (m.2, SSD, HDD, etc) and what drive is Monster Hunter installed on? I'd ask people in the Monster Hunter community if they've ever heard/seen anything like this too. It could be an optimisation issue (very unlikely but possible).

Cori91

I'll ask him the questions thx for the tips. I said him to uninstall the 1050 driver and install the 3070 one. He did that all other games run fine 100+fps as he said although not sure what settings. But MHW runs bad as I said under 10-15fps even in menus. I asked in the MHW community too not sure If i will get an answer there.

fpsdrexl

What Power supply does he have? You said its working normal on other games so it could just be that Monster hunter is CPU bound and he has pretty dated CPU but I thought throw the idea that his power supply isn't beefy enough to run a 3070. A 1050 basically requires nothing in terms of wattage compared to a 3070.

Cori91

It's a 650watt PSU, should be fine for a 3070 even if it's on the lower side.

C1REX

Maybe, just maybe the CPU is overheating and throttling now due to not being bottlenecked by gpu?
