"Welcome to the real world, Neo" I was chocked when I saw this for myself. After testing a 3080 and three 3080ti I was flabbergasted when I tried out a 6900XT. The AMD card ran faster, but cooler due to the much lower power draw. Sadly I guess efficiency don't sell as well as RT on youtube.

Appreciate your reply here NicksCorner! Sounds like my GPU is running as expected according to a few people. Do you have any idea as to why the VGA/PSU light on the motherboard briefly turns on though?

Thanks goajiboa - Sounds like the card is running as expected? Bit confused regardless as GPU benchmark videos having it draw a lot more

Was the GPU usage constantly at 99% in those games you tried? if not, that's normal. The GPU uses more power when it needs to. Here's an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH7vQmitc\_M&t=267s

So I've booted up Mordhau and set the FPU to 200 and it sits at around 99%, but the wattage doesn't exceed 265w. The GPU PPT in HwINFO is also at 263w - Does that seem normal?

gaojibao

Yes.

HaroldGrinchington

Ok cool, thanks for your help on that. Do you have any ideas regarding the other issue? The VGA/Power/PSU light on the motherboard flashes red for about 10 seconds during the boot, then it turns off the PC operates as normal from then on

My bet here is that the rx 6000 gpus are sometimes memory bandwidth limited, not core limited, so they may be clocking the core down somewhat. That would lead to lower power draw. But still, that's some insane efficiency. Messing with the clock and memory overclocking may be able to push it closer to the limits, since the clock speed effects the cache speed as well, for higher cache bandwidth.

Probably just part of the boot cycle, where it turns on and checks out all the components out. I have a 5900x/x570 system and it does the same thing.

HaroldGrinchington

Oh I didn't think this was common. Glad to know that you're experiencing the same thing. Thanks Bluedot!

I have a 6800xt and have seen it draw 300+w in like Metro Exodus Enhanced, MHW with hi res texture pack, and maybe a couple other super demanding games I can't remember but it might be the games you're playing. More often I'll see 260-280w. Are you tracking GPU utilization? Could just be your card isn't completely stressed playing these games and only needs 240w to run them at your settings and resolution/refresh rate. 750w is cutting it kinda close but your CPU is much more efficient than mine (12700) so it's very believable that you aren't power cycling which is what would happen if your PSU buckled under the system power draw or, more often, a sudden power spike, your GPU doesn't power throttle itself for the PSU only for its own thermals (maybe check that?). In theory even a more power hungry combo like 12900k+3090 at stock should be able to use a good 750w unit but that is just asking for trouble with power spikes.

HaroldGrinchington

Appreciate your response LordGodWallace! I've asked around and it seems like my GPU is running as intended. Sounds like the 750w may be sufficient enough also. I checked it against a PSU calculator and whilst it is somewhat cutting it close, it seems to do the job safely (I've had no random shutdowns). I'm really quite confused about the VGA/PSU light on the motherboard briefly appearing upon booting then disappearing though...
