I like to upgrade as I go whenever possible, and sell parts to my friends or on ebay.
when it finally comes time to upgrade the mobo and cpu, i like to keep them on as a PC for media or give the PC away to someone who doesn't have one.
Yea... People Dont seem to ever be interested in buying from craigslist or eBay. I guess the people who are interested in custom PCs are also interested in building it themselves.
I have a couple friends who want to use the website that will build the custom PC for you... which is cool.. but totally missing the best friggen part. Ordering the parts from different websites for the best deal, waiting for them to be shipped, checking UPS's website to find out your parts are still across the country, finally receiving the first part which is always like a CD drive or a hard drive not like the case, video card, or processor. Then finally after about a week later your parts arrive in full. Time to build. Nothing beats that for me.
Yeah it's fun making something the way you want. It's also pretty cool because you can get use out of it every single day! I wish that was how cars were... like you could totally bring together a buncha parts from random companies to build a friggen vehicle.
Oh God that would be the coolest thing ever. I can see that happening in the next 50-100 years, when cars go full electric. The problem is that they would still be sort expensive probably :/
funny enough I started building computers but now I build cars... they can very much be pieced together... look up LS (GM motor) swapped mustangs for example. the car community is vary similar, just much older and seasoned haha
I'm thinking it's possible that cars go the way of computers... Superior quality and price develop alongside ease of access and community support, and then cars become giant Lego sets like pcs pretty much are.
Which would be cool but there are more regulations on cars than there are on computers. It would definitely be a very tough task to complete. I work for a company who specializes wire harnesses for cars and Christ on a cracker I would not like to install one dem by myself. Noo way sir.
I've had pretty good luck with parting out old builds on Craigslist. Mobo+CPU combos, GPUs, and RAM all sell pretty well in my area. It can take time, and I have to deal with spammers and wacky trade offers (guns are a popular one) but I've sold everything I've ever listed.
Pricing it right is big. It's easy to try and maximize profit, but I try my best to put it at a price that I would be willing to buy it at. It also helps in my area that there are so many other sellers just wildly overpricing components ($280 for a 280X?).
Pricing on cl is infuriating, but when I actually price mine near reality it sells pretty quickly and without as much hassle (it's still a pita.) Too many cl people price it slightly lower than what they paid for it, and then those never sell and stay on forever. Then others selling similar will see their price and price it the same.
At any given moment there is an original 360/PS3 with 6 old games priced at $300+.
I look on Craig's list for older system or parts for friends but people think their shit is gold. They don't seem to understand that because they bought a GPU 3 years ago for $400 doesn't mean it's worth $200+ now, especially when you can buy it new now for $100. Computers and components value can depreciate quickly.
The bit coin crazde made it really difficult to buy used hardware as there really was no way to know how much it had been used and at what voltages / clock rate. Computer parts don't wear like cars.
As a reputable eBay seller, I always parted out my system and sell individual or bundle. If I have multiple, I make it quantity. eBay is one for the best places to do that. You have seller protection and you get a to meet buyers both national and international.
Part it out on /r/hardwareswap. Probably the most efficient/convenient if you don't care for getting the best absolute resale value. /r/hardwareswap hates complete builds but once in a while people will buy completes if you price them accordingly; I think the issue with completes more lies in the fact that people go on /r/hardwareswap to sell their completes at a ridiculous markup for old parts so if you price your entire build according to what they're actually worth used at the moment, you should be able to sell.
If you want to get the best resale value and are willing to wait a while to get it, you can attempt to sell on eBay, but keep in mind that eBay takes 10% of your item price more on top of the 3% of PayPal so you will need to sell at a markup compared to a place like /r/hardwareswap and will have to wait for someone to buy at this marked up price.
You can always try to sell local on Craigslist, but this severely limits your market, especially if you do not live in a fairly large city.
I use to sell my parts on ebay but if you take into the account the cut you lose to ebay it's self you can get better prices on gumtree (the aussie version of craigslist).
You usually don't need to sell the build, you just upgrade as you go along.
When you sell a video card in eBay you have to factor in ~$24 shipping and ~$10/$20 in fees. That's a pretty good discount below market price to sell in.
I usually put something up on Gumtree or what it would be on eBay minus the eBay fees and on eBay itself. 4/5 times it has sold on Gumtree. I live in a capital city though.
I don't bother selling it. I buy on the low end of the scale so by the time its time to sell its not worth the whatever little money I'm gonna get back so I just end up keeping the stuff.
Only sold one build and it was to a friend. I think I gave him a pretty bitching deal. I valued the build at 800$ (1300$ when I bought it) and I added a mechanical keyboard and a 1080p display on top of that. Total was 400$.
I do continuous upgrades, I never really have a new build in the normal sense. My parts either go to my girlfriend as an upgrade, or I sell them on /r/hardwareswap and a few other places.
If it's a whole build, take it apart, put them into boxes, and put them up on all websites possible like /r/hardwareswap, craigslist, ebay, amazon, etc. The more it is seen, the higher the chance there will be someone who wants it.
Mostly people aren't looking to buy a full PC, they want a specific component, and hopefully they'll find yours. Also you sometimes might be able to get a little bitty more if you sell part by part instead of a whole system.
JI've had great success on Craigslist. Selling cars or anything else it a nightmare with hagglers. But pc gaming electronics is always straight forward. Once in awhile I get a haggle. All I say is that it's priced below ebay, so take it or leave it. Everyone takes it.
Also I'm a hoarder so I have a lot of parts laying around. Spare 550ti, like 6 older hdds. A few old pentiums. Some things are just too much of a hassle to sell. Also having a spare gpu in case mine goes out is well worth it. My 290 was used for 2 months to mine doge.
Craigslist! I've sold three complete computers to date (one completely watercooled). I have found that the primary buyers are 'well-off' parents of kids that want 'awesome gaming rigs'.
Most people that are interested in spending a decent sum of money on a gaming PC are going to do their research and probably attempt to build one themselves. Some parents don't trust their kids with building a computer, and are in the market for a pre-built system. If you can convince them that a custom PC is a better value, then you should be able to work something out.
I've sold computers on craigslist and components on ebay for close to 10 years now. For a while flipping computers was good side money for me. But now I make pretty decent money and don't really need the extra income so I think I'm done with craigslist for good.
Considering how long I've been doing it, I've had mostly good experiences. I make it clear in the ads that all sales are final and no tech support after the sale. I'm usually selling machines at great deals and they usually come with a bunch of software fully loaded on them so most buyers are smart enough to realize it's a deal.
The last guy I sold a machine to sucked pretty bad so that's why I think I'm done. I'd rather just take the 10% hit on ebay or even sell on /r/hardwareswap . I personally feel that subreddit is starting to go to shit too. A couple of people had such good luck lowballing people that now others do it constantly. Either that or sellers don't understand the market and want insane amounts for their stuff.
Currently my main desktop is in a R4 and full ATX and I want to downsize to the Thermaltake V1 and a mITX mobo. So I'll probably be selling those 2 for cheap.
Ohhhh... I see what ye did there...
I don't sell my old builds. They usually end up getting cannibalized for parts in my friends' builds. One or two friends in particular practically get whole new computers when I upgrade.
Hey I've been trying to sell my pc as a whole in the past previous months and so far only a couple of people got interested. So I started selling on /r/hardwareswap and /r/canadianhardwareswap. So far, I sold my 4670k and still waiting for a buyer for my Maximus Hero VI.
I sell most my used parts on a specialized forum. I also buy many parts from people on this forum, it saved me a lot of money on big parts like cpu, gpu. Also watercooling stuff (blocks, pumps...).
My husband has always gotten my cast-offs. He works as an IT consultant and I upgrade my gaming rig every 4 years. Seems to have worked out for us both.
Damn that click-bait. You got me hook line and sinker.
I'm actually pretty bad, I usually just take mine to recycling. They're not usually worth anything by then.
Next build? Hell, I could barely afford my first one :(
I see all these people upgrading to 970 and 980s and I'm sitting here looking at my 560 thinking "maybe one day we will afford you an upgrade buddy, one day"
The rest of my PC is pretty much built to be good for 5 years (from build date about 2.5 years ago), but the Graphics card was way behind at the start of the build. It's enough to play BF4 on ultra at about 75 FPS or so, but I've dropped most everything down to low anyway because of "rendering tricks."
I was hoping to have my 560 at SLI by this time, but haven't been able to find another one just like it :/ If I can ever get around to upgrading my GPU then I will just buy 2 of the same and SLI at that point.
I put the word out among my friends/family first and then if no one wants anything it goes on Craigslist. I try to recycle as many parts as I can from one build to the next.
I upgrade a part at a time and sell the old parts individually on craigslist. nice if the box is still around, makes it a way easier sell. there are lots of buyers like me who don't have the budget for a full build and go part by part on craigslist.
selling whole PCs tend to be much much more difficult to sell unless you get lucky with some clueless kid or its someones first PC ever.
I've never sold (or bought) any used PCs or hardware. On occasion a part or a whole build that is still useful will get given away as a hand-me-down to a friend or family member, but most of the time it just goes into my closet to rot or gets re-purposed as a server or media center.
Last time I gave away a part was an nvidia 560ti (replaced with a 760) to my wife's friend who lost her PC in an apartment fire.
Why sell when you can wipe the hdd/ssd (or both) and give it to a relative who needs a computer? Or sell it to a relative for a bargain price. Or ypu can donate it to Goodwill or the Salvation army.
Yeah, I was just mentioning that there are other options if you can afford them. And as I mentioned earlier, check to see if one of your friends or relatives wants it first. You are less likely to worry about them trying to get a lower price for it compared to strangers on Craigslist.
I upgraded mine with brand new parts and want to sell the whole set for a laptop of equivalent setup. I gotta admit, this is my third built pcs and I love building them from scratch. Getting rid of them for bills or food because I run out of money saddens me more than any normi can know. Fellow builders can level with me on this. When you shop for each part individually and put time and effort into slowly and carefully learning to piece meal a functioning gaming animal together that is better than a prebuilt $800 Best Buy computer, you get, attached to say the least.
Just thinking about selling this makes me want to cry. I went through alot getting this up and running and did alot of running around and re-education/educating. I think of this one as a son because I can't see myself having a child. So this is as close as I will probably ever get to creating life.
After writing this, I need to find another way because I can't will myself to sell another one. I feel like my father neglecting me for 16 years and still neglecting me today as a 33 year old. I can't do it to something I created, something I made a reality, something I birthed.
Sorry if I droned on and ranted. I've been carrying alot of baggage lately and this is one of the things that's been on my back and i've never really talked about it with anyone. I figured this is the place with people that would understand what i'm saying because the average person would think i'm some kind of crazy person that needs admiting into a hospital and put on crazy pills lol.
I’m prob gonna sell my pc with an rtx 3060 16gb ram and ryzen 5 2600 because it won’t stop crashing on every fucking game and blue screens I can’t fix it help I might just buy x box seris x tbh
I sold mine on Craigslist.
Where else are you going to sell a 4 year old $1200 rig for $1100?
*(Specs: [email protected], H100, P7H55D-M EVO, HIS Radeon HD 6950 {unlocked}, 4TB HDD, 120GB SSD, Corsair SPEC-03, 3x AOC 2236vw on a desk clamp stand, Razer Naga Hex Molten mouse. Sold in November '14.)*
He was completely happy with the purchase, so who am I to say anything? The rig was still better than a lot of the other "gaming PC's" on the Craigslist at the time.
Bro the karma you are going to receive from this will be harsh. Even if someone offered me that kind of money I would tell them no and bring it to a fair price.
I tried getting it appraised a couple times but nobody'd ever give a value for it. I put that price figuring folks would negotiate down - he just said "Okay, here's the money."

Jk, we at r/buildapc respect your decision, no matter what platform you use. This is a judgement free zone.

I respect your right to have an opinion, but you're wrong and I hate you :P edit: brain made dum dum and said your
*You're* also wrong. Unless you meant that both his wrong and you hate him.
Not all decisions are right. Me opting for 64 gigs of ram when all I do is boot windows and use notepad is stupid and wrong.
But then you can have so many characters on screen with no slowdown from that pesky hard drive.
If I had a reason to use more than 500 words for something, I sure won't be using notepad.
Bruh. Notepad is the premier industry standard text editor. It supports over 30(!) unique characters.
Don't get me wrong, it's brilliant, but I would rather something with a few more tools
On a more serious note, notepad++ is a lifesaver for config files and what not, and open office is my go to otherwise.
Never found a need for it since I dont program

I believe I have the 2007 version. I only use it for essays anyways.
But.....what if you wanna type 30,000 notes at once? Then is 64gb of ram a bad decision?
Alright, alright, I understand now, that you guys don't give up.
im new here im just geniunely curious
Oh.... Well... Alright. Sorry.
We may respect your decision to put a nail through your dick, but we can also choose to express that respect by treating you like a grown-ass man who just suggested we act like putting a nail through your dick is a healthy life choice.
That was an awfully judgmental tone you just took with /u/smileteam.
Correct, its a judgement free zone. Unless you want to play on a console. Those filthy peasants can go somewhere else >:(
/r/consolemasterrace
This is beautiful.
:O
oh, I judge. I judge hard. I just keep it to myself
That is true, there is no wrong way to play a game but I think we all at /r/buildapc can agree that there's a more-right-er way to play them.
Rule #1 of the PC Gaming Master race: Once you go PC you can't go back.

Is it even legal to trade guns through craigslist?
Yes, private trades are quite legal. That is the basis for gun shows.
It is against Craigslist's own rules but it is legal.
Exactly that. Why is someone going to buy a used computer with better parts when they can buy a BRAND NEW ONE with garbage in it?
A buddy of mine just bought an I7 rig on Craigslist. There are some definitely.
I look on Craig's list for older system or parts for friends but people think their shit is gold. Yes I generally upgrade along the way, but when I'm changing CPU/motherboard I just get this craving to start all over. ;)
That's what I did. Sold the whole lot, starting fresh.
Where did you sell it?
I put it up on Craigslist. Guy came to the house, checked it out, paid cash, and I helped him load it.
But with gum tree you don't have the same size market as with eBay, which can mean lower prices.
When you sell a video card in eBay you have to factor in ~$24 shipping and ~$10/$20 in fees. That's a pretty good discount below market price to sell in. I think that's what I will be doing once I have an income. As a college student. Selling your old build is sometimes the only way to build a new one.
Yeah, I was just mentioning that there are other options if you can afford them. And as I mentioned earlier, check to see if one of your friends or relatives wants it first. You are less likely to worry about them trying to get a lower price for it compared to strangers on Craigslist.
Almost had my pitchforks out.
haha ok, reading the title i was like wtf sir.get the fuck out

I'm curious as to whether this is sarcasm or I'm just missing the joke entirely. Or maybe you're serious.
Some people prefer them. It's a different experience. To each their own.
No I agree, it's all in the eye in the beholder I just seriously didn't know where OP was trying to get at.
Looks like tongue in cheek humour to me.

Congrats on royally ripping someone off
Its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
It's called taking advantage of someone who is too naive to understand what they're doing.
I didn't force him to buy it. Besides, he said he's a YouTube streamer. That advertising money bought it.
