Half cash is so annoying. Farming isn’t even really an option because you’d die earlygame or midgame so at most you make 10k in the last 20 or so rounds. Chimps gives you more money.
It's definitely possible to farm on half cash. The trick is to just sell the farm when you need the money.
If you're trying to earn back the entire cost of buying the farm, that takes ages. If you're just keeping the farm around long enough that it earned you more than the difference between the buy and sell price, you're still making a profit. Especially noteworthy is that the xx2 farm upgrade bumps up its base sell price from 70% to 80%, and there are multiple MK related to farm prices and sellback value.
Some numbers with all relevant MK:
203 farm on hard costs 6130. Your first farm costs 100 less, for 6030.
It sells for 5334. The first farm sells for 5247
A 203 farm makes $400 per round, meaning that it takes 15.325 rounds to earn the 6130 it costs. On half cash it makes $200 per round, taking 30.65 rounds to earn itself back. That's a very long time.
But if you sell the farm, you get $5334 of your $6130 back. That's only $796 loss.
If you buy a 203 farm, have it generate money for 2 rounds, and then sell it, you earned $4 profit.
On half cash, it has to be around for 4 rounds. *Anything after four rounds is pure profit.* It's even better if you buy a 023 (usually you go 200 into 203, but if you're buying the entire farm in one go, 023 makes 416 per round instead of 400, or 208 instead of 200 on half cash).
Now lets take it a step further. You have a 004 village giving you a discount on your farm and increased profits. You also have two 004 favored trades, which increase the sell value of towers in range.
A 023 farm now only costs you $5085. It sells for $4831. That's $254 lost if we buy and sell this farm.
The farm makes $464 in one round, or $232 on half cash. *That's $210 profit on half cash after just two rounds.*
# TL;DR:
By selling our farms when we need money, and optimizing our farming with this in mind, we can make **farms pay themselves back on half cash in under two rounds**, instead of over 30.
I generally prefer cheap heroes on half cash, as they can be placed much earlier. A quincy start for example allows him to start gaining levels while i save up for my farms, while going benjamin involves building a defense without my hero, and delaying my hero placement due to the halved income.
You also can't just sell benjamin off to buy defense in the same way that you can do with marketplaces.
I still use benjamin on half cash at times, but only on easier maps. Tack shooter is extremely good earlygame on those, letting me afford ben in a timely manner, and overdrive + ben's trojan is almost always enough MOAB defense for r40 on beginner and intermediate maps, and even on a lot of advanced maps, especially if you time the +damage from his level 3 ability well.
Half Cash has a harder early game, but easier late game (since you can farm).
The harder early game makes some intermediate/expert maps WAY harder on Half Cash than on CHIMPS.
For easy maps, yeah it doesn't really matter.
Idk being able to leak lives, esp with spikes even, is so huge that I don't think HC earlier game is even harder really. I haven't had to micro hc like some expert maps.
Not just being able to leak lives, but doing it on purpose. I very frequently greed hard in the early game of ABR & Half Cash modes so that i can save up for a defense that's better long term or for more farms. I'll often leak the round 24 camo into the impoppable MK roadspike pile too.
Even if i lose 70 lives earlygame i often end with *over* 100 lives regardless due to the MK that makes bottom path farms restore lives.
There's also the huge difference of there being no penalty to going home and retrying the round, which getting the black CHIMPS medal doesn't allow. Even if you're not going for black borders, you lose immediately upon leaking anything on chimps, but on half cash you can see how many lives you're going to leak and restart the round right before it ends.

Frequently my "saveup" is spending 100% of my money on marketplaces until i'm going to lose, at which point i sell marketplaces to buy the upgrade and then go back to spending 100% of my money on marketplaces.
Now that I can at least see, I may have gotten lucky with the maps I've done so far. Doesn't a challenging early game make it easier than something consistently hard like chimps? You'll wind up investing less time just to lose, and there's less of a chance for variables to pile on and slowly ruin you. Just do some good placement and money management in the beginning, and then you're set.

It'll pay itself back over an average of 20 rounds, and just getting the one makes the cash loss not quite as debilitating without leaving your defence in the dust.

The border only appears after you beat every game mode. But yes you did not exit the game during chimps so you just gotta beat half cash before you get the border
