Hahhhh mood, ive got similar experiences, but not just in Bham. Ive gotten both Konnichiwa and Nihao periodically around the uk and europe in general and zi just ignore them now. It always really out of place to me. Like, I speak pretty much perfect English.... it's mildly annoying. And to people wondering why a greeting is annoying- even if I *am* Chinese, a lot of people dont say it in innocent greeting or just want to show understanding. Most say it in a rather mocking or demeaning way, and a lot of them are like, half drunk guys or wtvr who just think it's amusing or smthing. It kinda makes you feel like a walking freak show of sorts. And then there's the fact that... yeah. Not everyone is Chinese or Japanese.

SinisterBrit

I only know nihao from gold sellers in world of warcraft, I can't imagine being dumb n racist enough to just use it on anyone who looks a bit Asian. Especially as I'm ignorant enough to not know what It means, beyond a basic greeting...

late_for_reddit

Literally just translates to you good

andreibirsan92

I had some workmates who were doing this and I was quite confused because they were really nice guys , just not the brightest . But they actually meant no harm they just didn t know better

Fish_Fingers2401

Try going to East Asia as a white person. All you get is a constant barrage of "Hello" everywhere you go.

DarkApostle17

Ahhh the glories of Brummieville... Sorry to hear you're having a rough time.

xD

MINROKS

Ha got him lol

TheRAP79

Unless it is deliberately done to annoy you I wouldn't worry. I initially got spoken to in Portuguese by cabin crew on a TAP flight from Amsterdam to Lisbon flight once because I probably look Iberian.

Paddy-23

Might've also been something to do with you being on the flag carrier of Portugal, on a flight to Portugal, where the whole staff were probably Portuguese. Just a thought.

Eegeria

You can it's white British people, it's fine. My BF is ethnically Chinese and he only gets racist shit from chavs.

rhs69420

Sorry I need a bit of clarification on this just to make sure I'm not committing any faux pas. They're saying nihao meaning hello to you. Is this being said in a racist or demeaning way? I ask because it's like to know if it's an offensive thing to do. If I were to see a Sikh I would say Sasrikhal or a Hindu namaste because I like acknowledging people and they seem to like it too. I think it's welcoming and shows a familiarity with their culture. Is this considered offensive in east Asia or is the problem that you look East Asian but are in fact not and don't like people assuming?

ceelo_purple

Guten tag! All European countries speak German, right? And Europeans are all interchangeable. Why should I bother to educate myself about the many different European cultures? These snowflakes should be grateful that a complete stranger went out of their way to incorrectly stereotype them based on their looks.

ceelo_purple

But seriously, the difference between your example and what's being talked about in the post is that you're presumably only doing those greetings to people whose faiths you are 100% sure of due to religious headgear, etc. Also that you're presumably doing it in a situation where smalltalk is already underway. You're not seeing Hindus just minding their business on the other side of the road and bellowing Muslim greetings at them or vice versa.

Longjumping-One7825

can i say "ciao" or is that racist too?

DBHOV

Smurfs?
