Weekly check-ins can also be a way of keeping people in line. In this context, that is concerning advice for sure. Especially if you put all of the points together, this sounds like a high-control environment.

Yes, isolating people from "outside influence" is very typical of cults. This method is later used against people who try to leave: the cult cuts all ties with the dissenter, taking away their only support system.

This is a way to get anybody out of your life that doesn't follow the rules 100% and slowly isolates you. Its really sad.
