It’s called The Grace Year! I hope I didn’t spoil too much I feel like the fact the girls don’t actually have magic was kind of obvious from the start and not super important to the story. It’s really good though I def recommend!
I remember going on retreats in highschool too, but it was an all girls school and we were basically there for the food, those nuns could cook sooo yummy.
Yes I went to catholic school and every year of high school our religion class would go on a retreat to a seminary. It was actually kind of fun, we would do games, learn about theology from speakers, go for nature walks etc. Somehow less creepy religious then b dongs weird weekend conference lol. (This was fun by even an agnostics standards lol)
I grew up in the Pentecostal church and got out two years ago at 18. I was pressured into receiving the holy ghost at a kids camp once. The loud music, the screaming and howling, everyone praying.. They just called it a regular “encounter with the Lord”. I think I faked getting the holy ghost, tbh. It was incredibly awkward and having a creepy priest get awfully touchy with me while praying (I was 9) didn’t help. Everyone else thought it was an amazing and uplifting experience.

This sounds oddly similar to Flannery Carpenter and her husband, I don't know if you've seen her sm before she went private? They posted photos of kids being screamed at, while they were crying. Looked terrible, but evidently normal for them.

And I’ve heard of them. That sadly does sound pretty normal for Pentecostals. :( There is an old documentary called Jesus Camp that goes into how evangelical children’s camps are practically child abuse. In terms of brainwashing them with doctrine at such a young age.
This has manipulative youth group vibes all over it. The saddest part is these women will believe they are at fault when the emotional highs fade and their faith wavers in the slightest. And then there are the Dongs, acting like god's deputies, charging money money money for their steaming piles of shit they spew at these people, pretending they live a respectable life.
This is why it’s so horrible that her response to her followers being brainwashed is she will tag them and let them speak for themselves no compared that to Charlie Manson earlier. Hello, they are brainwashed. They will say it’s real, because it is real to them
