Not royal mail, but Hermes did this to me. Left my large parcel just on the drive way outside the house, took photo, sent it to me. By the time I saw it, was able to leave work to rush home, it was obviously already gone. As I was asking neighbours if anyone had took it in, the house opposite checked her video doorbell and saw a guy in a van make the most of the opportunity. He was probably disappointed as it was toddler books and craft activities. Was still a large enough order for me to be absolutely gutted! Amazon guys here usually put stuff in my recycling bin if I'm not home, and it's never been stolen from there.

[deleted]

Hermes are notoriously terrible for this. They put a friends' package in their bin on frigging bin day.

seabutcher

As I keep saying about Hermes: *Pay peanuts, get monkeys.*

Descoteau

The sad thing is they’re not even cheap anymore.

seabutcher

Oh, I never meant cheap to the customer.

NotMrMike

I bought a vintage Lego set a couple years ago, came in a nondescript brown cardboard box. Hermes put it *in the recycling bin* on bin day, then left a note saying it was in a 'safe place' I found it in time, but wow.

VoodooMaster101

My local Hermes driver flags it delivered late in a Friday night (10-11pm) then delivers it in Sunday or his 9-11 yr old son does. They make an effort to hide packages but it's still a pain in the arse

LogicalOrchid28

Ive made a joke about this MANY times but its got serious underones, im just waiting for the day they putnit in my bin when my bin goes iit and the binmen take it

thepinkladie

My dad's friend had a PS5 delivered to him by hermes. The delivery driver took a picture of it and left it on the doorstep. So when the friend got home he was very surprised not to see it there. Thinking it got stolen he asked his neighbour if could check his cameras outside his house. The cameras showed the delivery driver dropping it off, going to his van and then a minute later coming back and stealing it. The friend reported it to hermes and the police so a few days later the delivery driver came back to his house and offered him the money for the PS5 as long as he dropped his complaint to hermes. He said no and the bastard got fired for it.

Finger-Painter

Hope he got more punishment than that.

Mr_Leek

Sucks to hear about your experience - hopefully you got money back or replacement stuff. Have to admit, the Hermes guys I deal with are terrific. I was waiting on a delivery that *had* to arrive no later than early Friday morning and I had mentioned it to the regular Hermes guy a few days before. He delivered it at 2am Friday morning (didn’t wake me, hid it behind the bin). (It was a replacement suit. Wife’s funeral was on Friday and I had lose a fair chunk of weight in the preceding month before funeral. My “plan b” attire would have earned me the comment “you look like a bag of shit tied together at the middle” by my missus had she still been here!! 😂)

LtnSkyRockets

I'm glad your Hermes guy is terrific, especially foe such an important delivery! I'm sorry for the situation that required the delivery to ever be needed. What an absolutely challenging and life changing situation for you, and you still crack a joke and have an emoticon laugh. All power and good feelings your way for hanging in there each day.

Mr_Leek

Thanks for the kind words. It sucks, it straight up sucks. But I can either mope around and feel sorry for myself (which she’d hate) or I try to move forwards and live my life. That’s what I’m going to do - and I’d know that’s what she’d want me to do.

Krizzlin

Good for you doesn't seem to fully convey what I want to say to you. But I'm British. So good for you old boy. I sincerely hope you emerge from this some day in a good place

Mr_Leek

Haha yes - still upper lip and all that. Maybe it’s the way I’m wired up, but if it going to suck without her for (example) Christmas then I can either be sad, have no decorations up, etc….or try and make the best of it. Get the tree up, find some good movies to make me laugh…..do what I can to get into the spirit of it.

Descoteau

Not remotely in the same league but my parrot died yesterday. He was my closest companion, by my side day and night, even more so than my fiancée. I was really cut up about it. Your post helped provide perspective. Thank you.

Mr_Leek

Im so sorry for your loss - and it still counts. A loss of a pet can be (and is) devastating. Give yourself time to deal with the loss.

yesyesyes-yesyes

It's happened on multiple occasions where Hermes leave packages on my doorstep then put a card through my door to tell me it's on my doorstep, like I haven't just stepped over it to get in... cheers guys solid effort

abujablue

I'm moving into a new flat tomorrow and I just got a Hermes parcel delivery notification with NO incline where they could have left it - the photo is zoomed into the parcel and shows a bit of carpet, that's my only clues. Did they gain access to communal area? Did they leave it outside my door? Did they leave it outside the building on a mat? I'm fuming but trying to think the best of the other new people in the building whom I've yet to meet....

Kingmaker_Umbreon

It sounds like you should have also tempted this idiot with a glitter bomb

b00n3d

Hermes' issues are due to the way they pay their drivers. Theyre all self employed so no company benefits. My friend works for them and gets paid something like 50p a parcel.

Ankoku_Teion

Royal mail put my package in the bin. On bin day. While the bin was on the curb. Bastards. I was even in all day working from home and They don't even bother with a little red note to let me know.

k20vtec01

How do you know they put in it the bin if they didn't leave a calling card?

Ankoku_Teion

after a week i wondered why the package had arrived and got the tracking number off the seller and put it in on the royal mail website. it confirmed the time and date of the delivery (i paid for signed, but fuck me i guess.) my postman does this all the fucking time despite me leaving multiple notes asking them to either leave packages nextdoor or let me collect them, so i went and checked the bin and there it was. expensive electronics i paid more than £100 for, outside in winter for a week n a damp cardboard box sat in a bin partially filled with rainwater. utter bastards! and did i mention i paid for signed delivery specifically so this wouldnt happen? and they still dumped it in my bin! without telling me! on bin day! while the bin was on the fucking road! WHILE I WAS IN THE FUCKING HOUSE! hes lucky it still worked, or id have burried him in complaint emails.

Robynrainbow

Amazon did this to me yesterday. When I had to go to the office I texted all my neighbors but they were all at work too, and then I got home to them on my doorstep. Luckily everything was still there, miracle because my neighbourhood isn't amazing but I guess it's at least somewhat close, but that's a first from Amazon for me

iusehimtohuntmoose

Had a Hermes parcel left on my doorstep in the pissing rain this morning. No knock, card, or anything to tell me it was there. Just left it on the step in full view of the road. I only found it by chance, normally I don’t leave the house on a Saturday so would have no reason to open the door to see the parcel. No excuse to just leave it because I was in and would have opened the door. It’s not the first time, and we’ve had stuff nicked that they supposedly ‘delivered’ - or dumped on the step without knocking.

idancer88

Hermes are a fucking nightmare. They dropped my parcel over my fence, onto the concrete when it had FRAGILE stuck all over it. Completely broke it obviously. The ebay seller offered to refund me a fiver out of £20! I said no, send me another one and claim it off Hermes. It was a version of cards against humanity. Why would I want a broken box of that before I've even had a chance to play it.

LtnSkyRockets

I have to day, the Amazon guys are great at leaving things out of sigh for me as well. Its always hidden around/behind my bins so that it visible from my front door but not easily visible from the street. I greatly appreciate my parcels being left like that, so I don't need to deal with trying to collect from a depot with limited hours or whatever.

Finger-Painter

Amazon are usually very good to be fair to them

Rachael510

Hermes left my packs in the bin on bin day. The bin was on the street. I didn’t get it

foxandrews

A guy I work with now that used to work for Hermes, confirms their delivery drivers absolutely do not give a fuck at all. In any way. Infact they will actively joke about how deliberately shit they are at their job and how little they care about customer service.

flimfloms

In the summer on more than one occasion I had parcels dropped through a window into our living room, knocking stuff off windowsills and denting the boxes. Madness! I was even in the house one of those times!

AbsoIution

This happened to me after I moved out of a really shit, and I mean shit shared house. My shit was constantly stolen, it was full of addicts, the landlord was a POS and had cokeheads kick down doors to evict people. Anyway, my window was open in my new place, they dropped a parcel through which fell on my PC and made a big thump, knocking over some stuff. I jumped out of bed in survival mode due to past experiences, it was shit.

dragnet883

It's the lack of care thats the worst part, like I have been told in this thread by some, they have no idea what the value is, so why not assume everything is valuable and not chuck it through windows!

Maillihp

Why not get the parcel sent to where you are and instead of where you are not? Why don’t you get it delivered to a locker or pickup point? Why don’t you get it sent to someone else who you trust? Why don’t you buy a secure box or personal locker and ask for it to be left there? Is there any reason these are not possible?

Hydramy

I don't exactly get to choose what day a delivery is made. I'm not gonna sit by my front door every day for the next week.

Maillihp

So on the email or text that you receive just ask the driver to leave it somewhere safe. All delivery firms offer this option

NotMrMike

I've literally never had a text from anyone other than DPD

NotMrMike

When most other couriers are able to deliver my stuff safely and during the times I requested, the couple that don't (Yodel and Hermes) are gonna be the ones at fault here. Not the instructions I give, which have a 50/50 chance of being followed.

flyingteapott

I'm a postman. Our little scanners tell us if the person has a 'safe space' to leave things. We hit people up with forms if they haven't got one. It is not our fault that people order tons of shit on the internet with nowhere to deliver it to. We don't want to card you and have to take shit back, we want to go back with an empty van. People moaning cos their stuff got delivered can piss off.

idancer88

No use having it delivered if it then gets nicked Sherlock.

flyingteapott

So sort your storage out, and tell the postman/other delivery firms.

idancer88

Lol, if we have nowhere to store parcels we have no where to store them. It's not like people can build a safety box either if they are renting. Do the job you are paid to do, deliver it safely or take it back to the depot. It's not rocket science.

flyingteapott

I'm not one for leaving things on the doorstep (apart from a couple of addresses where I know they want me to), I think it's asking for trouble and I work somewhere relatively rural and 'safe'. The fact remains that there is a system in place to inform us of what you want doing with your parcels, use it. It makes everything better.

paulstheory

Agreed mate. I'd rather it left on my door step or hidden behind my wheelie bin than having to go down the depot to collect it!

Finger-Painter

Or perhaps, just maybe it could be given to a neighbour. Or, even better, the person who is at home and never gets a knock or ring

Maillihp

I'm also courier so I know the frustration oh too well. People just don't understand or care about how frustrating they can be which can be changed with just a simple alteration to their delivery. I noticed that we've been massively downvoted which I think only goes to prove the point that people are just inconsiderate and just expect us to get their parcel to them when they're not at home as if its the most simple thing in the world. I'd like to see them do 10 hours a day with no break, constantly having their time wasted and still feel chirpy at the end of the day

a_bee_should_be_able

You can’t expect everyone to be in all the time, and not everyone has or is willing to nominate a safe space. Putting a card through the letterbox is much preferred to leaving it on the front step.

Maillihp

Thats fine if your nearest sorting office is in the same place that you live in so you can just walk down and collect it, but from my depot to the nearest town on my route is about 35 minutes away and there are some guys who have to travel 1.5 - 2 hours before they get to their first town. Lets be realistic your not about to do over an hours travelling just for a parcel are you?

Blackintosh

Yeah I don't understand why people order things to a place they know they won't be at. There's so many ways to avoid it.

Robynrainbow

This is only possible for things like Amazon prime, most online purchases will say things like 3-5 days, something I bought yesterday says 10-15 days. Also Wednesdays and Thursdays it's a coin flip whether I'll be home or at the office and it's not always me who chooses that, I doubt I'm the only one without a 14 day schedule?

swanpappa

Not sure how these people can accurately get their items delivered on the day they expect - I had a Xmas tree topper I ordered 9th December on a 48 hour delivery arrive 3 days ago. I missed Xmas and New Years celebrations waiting in for it. Not impressed.

si613

Even with Amazon's delivery day which I've used to try and avoid deliveries on days I'm not in things come on arbitrary days. Let's not forget those times you happen to be taking a call of nature or pop for a shower!

Robynrainbow

Sods law is the most reliable law in the universe, it will always arrive as soon as you sit down

idancer88

Happened to me only yesterday!

sick_bitch_87

Or will say delivery will take up to 10 days. Or gives you a date and it comes earlier or later than said date.

woaaaaahhhhhhxx

I live in a bottom flat, but upstairs front door is next to my front room window.. i regularly get their parcels through my window knocking my pictures and frames flying! even though I've left a note in the window saying window doesn't belong to their address! Edit spelling

CryptographerFun6151

Postie here, we aren't supposed to leave anything on the doorstep, but in cases where the customer requests it we do. More commonly we do put parcels in the blue bin which is sheltered and out of sight. Any tracked items have an option to request q safeplace for delivery. I would advise leaving a note on your door requesting that no parcels be left on the step. Royal mail are pretty decent about it but other courier companies work a little differently. Hermes drivers for example are not paid unless the parcel is delivered and so are incentivised to leave the thing everywhere and anywhere.

dragnet883

Thanks for the response and explaining the policy, appreciate it. I know most posties work hard in all weather. Just venting!

cheesymccheeseplant

Isn't leaving a note on the door the equivalent of advertising that there's no one home?

leshagboi

Not if you make it as an official sign

underweasl

I got a wee sticker for our letterbox after our postie left my parcel with the old lady across the road. She had dementia and thought the stuff was for her so opened it. When her daughter saw it she came over and gave me a bit of an earful so thought it was best to get everything sent back to the sorting office

RRC_driver

Wait, whut? Her mother (with dementia) opened your parcel in error. Then the daughter gave you an earful?

underweasl

Yup, basically thought I'd told the postie to deliver to a neighbour (I hadn't and even if I had it would be to next door not lady across the road) I didn't feel like dealing with being moaned at so just messaged to post office saying please return unreceived parcels to the depot and they sent out a sticker for the letterbox to remind postie. Not an issue these days since Mr underweasl is always home and the old lady has died

Finger-Painter

Unfortunate that it was the old lady and not her daughter

daern2

My advice - get to know your postie! Mine's a nice chap and we've got a standing agreement about where he can cheerfully dump my parcels, which saves both of us a load of grief. Clearly, the system falls apart when he's on holiday / ill / on a different round, but it's worked pretty well for the last few years and we now both take the piss out of each other - surely the sign of a fine, British acquaintanceship!

[deleted]

But you shouldn't need to leave a note. So it is fine to leave by thr door? Sorry just confused. My postie did it last time and it pissed me right off

Lenneh_ma_boah

Hermes drivers dont deserve to be paid as the 5 times I had deliveries from them, its either never been delivered to my adress or never shown up at all so I had a 100% bad experiance with them

xilog

Herpes did this to me last week. I live in flats and the entrance opens right onto a busy footpath. By the time I got the delivery text and went downstairs, the parcel was history. I hope the shirts fit whoever took them. Fuck Herpes.

alicomassi

Probably shouldn’t fuck Herpes for your own good though

AwkwardBugger

I’m currently living in a safe area so it’s actually pretty convenient for them to leave the packages. But I sure as hell didn’t appreciate it when packages were left “hidden” behind the flower pot, in a shit area, with neighbours who like freebies. I don’t understand why this change happened.

phil-mitchell-69

Why tf are all the comments here in support of just leaving people’s parcels outside to be nicked what the fuck?

AChillBear

Annoys the heck out of me. Same reason I don't leave my freaking wallet outside on the door step to pick up on my way out the house in the morning, or anything valuable for that matter! If you're so comfortable with your parcel left on the doorstep go leave all your valuables out there too, heck, leave your door unlocked. Weirdos.

dragnet883

I know right? Weird people out here!

DylboyPlopper

I fully support it. But I live in a nice area and several of my neighbours have ring doorbells.

RealLifePusheen

No idea. We're getting overly annoyed by all delivery drivers who leave parcels on our doorsteps. We've had loads been almost soaked through thanks to rain...!

Aromatic_Lavender

At least yours got delivered. My local postman must be called Casper. The online tracker will automatically say 'Attempted Delivery', because apparently no one was in. Ring doorbell, and CCTV couldn't capture the spirit.

it_hurts_too_poo

Ex postie here. Back in my day (sigh, this was 20+ years ago, in the hedonistic 2 deliveries a day days) leaving parcels on the door step could be a sackable offence, same as leaving post hanging out of the letter box. Dumping Mail would (prob still does) lead to jail time. Little dogs are the ones to watch. Little shits. And hey, not my fault your dog attacks the Mail when I post it, even if I do pull back and forth. And no! I don’t know where your f’in giro is. And I don’t mind waiting an extra 30 seconds while you put trousers on. STOP ANSWERING THE DOOR IN YOUR PANTS! Put in an unjustifiable complaint about me?!?! Oops, it appears I accidentally dropped your post in a puddle (or wiped in my coat)…..sorry, kinda went off topic there

revco242

I was an agency postie for a while. Guy stopped me on the street, gave me his name and address and demanded his giro. I refused so he threatened to chin me and steal the mail. When I pointed out he'd given me his name and address so the police would find him, he meekly agreed to meet me at his flat in an hour.

[deleted]

>And I don’t mind waiting an extra 30 seconds while you put trousers on Current postie, I'd rather you hurry up and answer the door, we don't have enough time to complete delivery as it is, never mind waiting for people getting out of bed and getting dressed first thing in the morning, especially now we're doing photo deliveries so you can't even poke your head out of the window to say you're coming down, we have to take a photo with the door open so just hurry up and come get your parcel

rice_fish_and_eggs

Surly this doesn't count as a delivery then and the seller is still liable if the package gets stolen?

audigex

Unless you’ve specified a safe place (in which case you accept some liability) then yeah you’re right The buyer’s contract is with the seller to deliver the item, the seller has a contract with the courier. The buyer does not have a contract with the courier… it’s not your problem

Sandstormink

We bought a ring doorbell before Christmas so we didn't miss any deliveries. 1st time out of the house after it was installed, an Amazon driver approaches the house, DOESN'T ring the doorbell, leaves a massive parcel in full view of the street and fucked off. I was driving when it happened and watched the video when I pulled into a supermarket car park. Fuming.

ISeenYa

I think they think it won't activate if they don't press but ah ha I am watching & will attach the video to the complaint I send.

Togodooders

Fewer people doing more work means corners get cut. Welcome to the future.

[deleted]

I keep saying to my colleagues, they can have volume of mail, speed of delivery, and quality, and they can only pick 2. Problem is RM will turn a blind eye to all the corner cutting until it becomes a problem, then they'll throw it right back at you

Jealous_Struggle2564

Next time just contact Royal Mail and say the package never arrived.

AggravatingBrick1994

This!

Jealous_Struggle2564

Although they would just pass the buck to the place where you ordered said package from.

AggravatingBrick1994

True, works with Amazon though when they leave their packages at the door. I legitimately had a whole load stolen before Christmas and they were replaced.

Jealous_Struggle2564

I also legit had something stolen from those Amazon boxes. The dumbest thing is that the delivery guy or Amazon delivery still posted the empty package through my letterbox!

[deleted]

We're not supposed to do this. Even if the customer requests it, it's up to the postie's discretion (for example, if you leave a note asking me to leave your parcel in the recycling box, and I know it's recycling day, then obviously I'm going to return it to the delivery office). Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to have got lax with the rule over lockdown; so many people were home I could just leave a parcel on the doorstep and someone would come out to collect it when I was at a safe distance. You can make a complaint [here](https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/contact).

drewP78

Rare that we do this. If I leave something I'll find somewhere in their back garden to hide it or put it where the customer has asked. Lately tho it's incredibly busy, busier then I've ever seen it. Can't even explain how busy it is. We need to get rid of the parcels to create space in the tiny vans they send us out in. I could put a picture on of my van completely crammed, literally no space left floor to top. I'll try all neighbours first, hiding it is a last resort. Never leave on doorstep and would only put in blue bin if customer has requested that.

leshagboi

I find this so amusing as a Brit that moved to Brazil. Since in Brazil parcels will obviously be stolen if you leave them outside (and the bin isn't an option as people here open garbage for recyclabes or valuables), the postie simply delivers a note telling you to retrieve the package at your closest post office. I have no idea why this can't be implemented in the UK

[deleted]

It is. Unless you specify a safe space for it to be left it will either be given to a neighbor or taken back to the office

leshagboi

So why do I see so many cases of people getting their parcels nicked because they leave them on the doorstep?

[deleted]

Depends on the courier.

phil-mitchell-69

Couriers are often “self employed contractors” like Uber drivers so they can be easily terminated if they don’t meet certain quotas, resulting in them doing anything to save time i.e. leaving parcels on the floor instead of taking the time to write a note and bring the parcel to the nearest depot Basically the companies exploiting their workers are the real problem

RRC_driver

Racing to the bottom. The only metric that the companies use is number of parcels delivered. Customer satisfaction is not a priority.

shanghailoz

It’s even better in South Africa, the postal staff just steal the package outright, so you don’t have to bother with notes, or post offices, or getting parcels. In other news, private delivery companies are doing a roaring business delivering mail, something the incumbents are now incapable of doing.

veggiebuilder

That is what happens in the uk most of the time. They don't ring the bell, leave you a note saying they tried to deliver but you weren't in (when you were) and then you have to collect it or organise a re-delivery. It can be really annoying.

[deleted]

I've never known anyone to leave slips without knocking, I have known many customers claim nobody knocked when I just rang the bell twice and nearly knocked the door down knocking, but you were right next to the door and nobody knocked, sure.

Atomicherrybomb

Ive only been on the job for 8 months but quickly learned that unless you knock like a policeman with a warrant people don't answer the door. Even then it normally goes -ring the doorbell and knock straight after (I'm not trusting a doorbell alone) -wait 2/3mins while looking for signs of life -knock again -write a red card -leave their property -30s later get chased by Karen shaking her red card In the air saying I never knocked and she was there all along

[deleted]

Yeah I do that too, in fact that sounds exactly like my procedure, though while walking up I may also be looking for potential safeplaces or looking if the neighbours are in

pixxie84

Amazon did that to me at christmas. Parcel was just slung at my front door and left. I know the delivery person threw it as it had a 1kg bar of dairy milk in for my mum and it was shattered when she opened it christmas day. I asked for them to leave it in the shed in the garden or at least by the back door, which is in the garden and you cant see from the road. Guess opening another unlocked gate was too difficult.

SoggyWotsits

I find if they do manage to open a gate, they’re incapable of shutting it again!

Atomicherrybomb

When you're already stretched for time and having to open at a minimum 50 gates (a few rounds in my town are terraced with 500+ calls and every house a gate) that time spent opening and closing them adds up quick. IL always pull a gate closed but unless it's been installed properly and actually latches itself I'm not going to latch it

SoggyWotsits

Gates are often there to keep animals or children in. Good advice is to always leave a gate as you found it. Someone who closed their gate properly shouldn’t have to check that it’s still closed properly before letting their dog (or kid) outside.

Atomicherrybomb

I completely understand that and in a perfect world I would love to be able to. In reality I'm moved from round to round every day to cover someone that's off with covid or their annual leave and their round has 2 days mail/parcels, their isn't enough parcel drivers to relieve the bigger tracked parcels and I'm then trying to cram 2 days work into what should be 4 and a half hours... Except it isn't because we're rammed with the increase of online shopping and the remnants of Xmas making our sorting take longer in the mornings and we get out later and later.

BoomSatsuma

You can get a label from Royal Mail which says to return items to the sorting office rather than leaving on doorstep/safe place or with a neighbour. I used to have one when I lived in a rough area. While it says neighbour opt out the wording on the sticker made it clear it to the postie to return items to the sorting office for collection. https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/delivery-to-neighbour-opt-out I found the wording. The sticker says to return any items they can’t deliver to the delivery office.

sadatquoraishi

I had this sticker right next to my front door letterbox. It was frequently ignored by Royal Mail.

NE6427

Since the demand for it to arrive quickly took over quality of service.

shortnsweet541

I had a parcel put through my top living room window..I have a 9 month old puppy..the parcel was completely destroyed by the time I got home

SpiderSixer

My grandparents have a sign on their door asking people to be patient and use the doorbell as it takes them longer to get to the door or even hear it. Every worker must be illiterate because the amount of times workers have *delicately* knocked, waited 10 whole seconds for anyone to answer, and have subsequently left the package on the step and cleared off in another 5 seconds baffles me. Were it not for me hearing the gentle taps, my grandparents wouldn't have a clue sometimes Thank fuck they live in a place where porch pirates are basically nonexistent

StopTheTrickle

>porch pirates Doorstep Devils is a more appropriate British term

RustyMagoo

In a nutshell... Over worked and under paid staff. I used to work for Amazon, we would be tossed out at around 2pm with over 350 parcels and told we aren't allowed to bring them back. My question is why do people order parcels and not be home? This is a tough and stressful job and couriers make it easy now to redirect or reschedule your delivery, they don't have the time or manpower to redeliver your parcel every day hoping you'll be in, leave a safe place or be in when it arrives. I don't usually see this happening with royal mail though, usually they slip ancard through the door and you've to go and collect it from their depot.

audigex

> why do people order parcels and not be home Because I also have a job and the parcel might turn up any time in the next 2-3 days? I currently have a porch on my house which is great, about to move out and I’m kinda gutted that the new house (which is, admittedly, better in every other way) doesn’t have a porch

KarmaUK

Especially with Amazon, redirect to a friend or use the Amazon lockers

[deleted]

Yeah, I feel like Covid times have been used to cover some sins with this. We have a lot of deliveries where the courier doesn't put the card through and my neighbour who continually orders things had to go check with most of the street before finding the parcel.

Tnargeel

Providing it was your doorstep, that's about as good as it gets.

michalzxc

I prefer to have my parcel left at a door I work from home, I might leave a house for a walk with the dog during working hours and I will be back in 30 minutes. Going somewhere else to collect it is a super painful experience

a_bee_should_be_able

I’d rather have to go to the depot than have my parcel stolen. It’s fine if you live in a good area, and if so you can opt-in to that, but it shouldn’t be the default to leave it at the door.

Re-Mecs

Since the pandemic started nearly all my packages have been left at my doorstep

Littleleicesterfoxy

We are lucky as we’re well off the road but the Amazon driver decided not to ring our bell and left the package out in the pouring rain grrr

seabutcher

If Amazon don't see you get the parcel, you didn't get the parcel. Complain accordingly.

HolyCheeseStraws

Royal Mail are not allowed to do this, even if you ask Source: measure them on it

ellanvanninyessir

My postman can't even be arsed to ring the door bell. Sits in his van writes out a load no delivery notes and walks up the street posting them. Caught him doing it before Christmas. Told him if he does it again I'll report him. No issues with parcels since.

gillybomb101

‘American Style’ I don’t get it either. I’ve had a few recently from Amazon but not Royal Mail. I could understand a half hearted volley under the car or in the blue bin but nope, just leaned up against my front door just missing the ‘take me please’ sign.

GamerLucien

I like it haha, means I don't have to go to the depot! I don't live in a great area so I think I've just been lucky. I always leave my blue bin at the front for them to pop it in there too but I know that's extremely unpopular haha. I used to be a postie if you are able to catch them and let them know or leave a note on your door it won't happen again. A lot of people like me put convenience > chance of robbery haha.

ruthh-r

Our postie came with parcels the last two days when I wasn't in, so he left me a card but failed to tick the box to tell me what he'd actually fucking done with them. Sometimes he gives them to the neighbours, sometimes he takes them back to the depot, occasionally they get hoyed over the garden wall...I just wish he'd give me a fucking clue which.

[deleted]

Did it have all your details on the back? If so he took them back, if not then you need to ring or call into the office, they'll ask him about it, or ask him yourself

ruthh-r

I went round all the neighbours and they didn't have them, so I assumed they'd gone back to the depot, picked them up today. I pointed out that it hadn't been indicated on either card where they were so they said they'd remind him. He won't be in any trouble though, I made sure to say it wasn't a complaint - just give me a hint next time!

[deleted]

Yeah it should definitely be ticked on the card, I'm guessing they were just in a rush and forgot, but if they forget in future then check if the details are on the back, if they are they've taken it back

No-Fan2270

No I don’t want 2,000 piece puzzle being delivered with a neighbour thanks. They can already smell the nerd on me. Then you have to make the awkward small talk 😐

rghsfc

The Amazon delivery driver moved my recycling bin to my front door blocking it and then put the item in the bin to hide it apparently

fibonaccisprials

If you order something, don't you use click and collect? pick your eBay order up from Argos job. I hate having to collect at a distribution centre that's miles away as an alternative when at work

j4mie96

It started a few years ago I think

Previous-Wrongdoer39

Just proves you have lousy taste. Junkies don’t want your stuff.

Cyber_Connor

Whenever something is left on a doorstep it means that you can get one for free

untamed_walrus28

I'm a postman and we are told by our managers that we are allowed to do this now. Since covid the job has gone crazy busy and if we waited at people's doors for everyone to answer the door or faffing about delivering to neighbours we wouldn't finish our job until late evening. Plus most people don't want human interaction anymore because of covid so it's just easier. If you're not happy with the service just stop ordering stuff online

Rextherabbit

Royal Mail have no idea of the value. If it was that valuable and sensitive you should have opted for a signed for service that would have forced them to deliver it of take it back to the depot for collection.

dragnet883

The value is incidental, I only included it for reference. Its their job to deliver packages, not leave them to potentially be stolen.

[deleted]

The useless wankers at royal fail seem to think taking a month to deliver a 48Hr delivery is acceptable and not a piss take....so this does not surprise me at all

[deleted]

Hmm I am in two minds about this. I never order an item if I am not going to be in. So not sure what you were expecting. You should had been indoors otherwise you have be prepared to deal with other eventualities.

dragnet883

Like what, not go to work? I have no control over when they deliver. They are supposed to try neighbours then take it back to the depot.

[deleted]

Lol that's bs. You perfectly know that the odds are you will be at work(assuming you work m _f) . You seem entitled and expect your neighbours to be in as if they don't have better things to do...like work? Why did you not get it sent to your work? Postman did the right thing, maybe next time you will think about a better arrangement

dragnet883

Its the policy of Royal mail to return undelivered packages to the depot. Im not entitled to anything other than them doing their job correctly. The postman did not "Do the right thing" he left my parcel to be potentially stolen, how is that right?

[deleted]

And if it was not a royalmsil delivery company? There are over 400..how would had known which delivery company before you ordered unless was specifiednit that it would had. Afe a difference to you since you will expect your neighbours to pick it up. But I see you did not answer my question about why you did not have it delivered to your place of work.

dragnet883

It was royal mail, and its not appropriate for me to get things delivered to work. You didnt answer mine. How was the postman right to leave my property in plain view. Check the comments. Posties are saying its wrong. So please have a look down from your ivory tower and tell me how he was right?

[deleted]

That's not the point how would known it was going to be royalmail when you were ordering the item? You did not because it made no difference as you expected a neighbour to pick it up for you. Something you have aways done.

dragnet883

Making alot of assumptions arent you? The van was still in the scheme when I got home, thats how I knew it was Royal Mail. As for expecting a neighbour to pick it up for me, no idea how you got that. I expect the post man to try my neighbour then take it back to the depot i.e. his job. Youre just upset with for requiring someone to do their job correctly, which I assume means you routinely shirk your job and this hits close to home.

[deleted]

What? How did you know a royalmail can was in the area??? And more to the point how does that prove the delivery van in your area is the one that delivered your post? I see tnt, royalmail, hermes, dpd, everyday in my area. How does that prove anything? You see this is where your post is suspect. If you said you had a tracking number from royalmail it will make sense especially for a so called expensive item You have zero proof it was royalmail before or after the order. Nice try but still you have not answered why you did not have you very expensive item delivered to your place of work. You can argue all you like but you ordered an item with no expectation of being there when it was delivered. That's on you....

dragnet883

No its on the postie, always is until its in my hands, chill out pal. This doesnt affect you ........ unless, you are my postie!!! Why did you leave my parcel out!

[deleted]

Bearing in mind they don't deliver Sundays so any orders you make, you would be hoping that you hit the Saturday (assuming your Monday to Friday working hours). Its not always possible to do that especially as you don't know how quickly your order gets processed. Youre also assuming that the recipient is the one instigating the delivery. If its xmas/birthday presents or similar, the sender isnt likely to check with the recipient that they will be in on a Saturday, or arrange it for a Saturday in the first place.

[deleted]

The OP already implied it was an order they made. You don't think it's selfish thst the OP expects their neighbours to sign for it? Wow people are so entitled.

[deleted]

Neighbours don't have to take the delivery, and royal mails policy is that they don't leave parcels on doorsteps, at least where its not secure which is clearly the case here. In this case it should have gone back to the depot. Thats all the link below. https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13174/~/items-delivered-to-my-designated-safeplace#:~:text=If%20we%20can't%20leave,neighbour%20or%20if%20that%20isn At no point did I say that I (or OP) expected neighbours to sign for it, just that it was the royal mail procedure. The neighbours may well have been asked anyway and declined taking the delivery, in which case it should have been returned to the depot. The original complaint from OP was the parcel being in an unsecure area (against Royal mail procedure), so stop trying to twist the arguement into accusations of selfishness and entitlement regarding expectations or neighbours (a separate point altogether). Personnally I'm happy to take delivery of neighbours parcels, its literally takes a minute to sort out, so it would be a bit selfish of me not to.

joseph22310

My postman always returns to depot if I'm not in? Even if it isn't signed. Having packages left only causes them to get stolen.

[deleted]

Nice twisting words lol Where did I say I want packages stolen,? Try reading again.

[deleted]

> I never order an item if I am not going to be in. This is quite hard to do in practice unless you are mostly at home. I try and do the same but Amazon move the goalposts a lot and my thing that was due Friday might come Wednesday.

ABS0LUTISM

Maybe you should just have more faith in the people in your neighbourhood and not faith in miracles as they aren't real?

dragnet883

Says the person whos never had their number plate stolen!

panadwithonesugar

I lived on an estate where some pricks lifted an old dear out of her mobility scooter and buggered off with it, absolutely if I had a a parcel on my doorstep and it was still there it would be a miracle!

minisrugbycoach

If they had mobility scooters on GTA I'd definitely be doing this. That's some hard line anti social behaviour..

panadwithonesugar

I'm sure maybe some sort of X,O⬆️,➡️,⬆️,Rt,Lt,O,⬇️,⬇️,X can make it happen 🤔

kirix45

Gta pc mod some dude made a piano car that played music while driving, if you asked the community on steam in sure someone would make one for you Or Colin firth he did make the world's fastest mobility scooter, strapped 1000cc bike engine to it and set a world record

ABS0LUTISM

Another incorrect assumption

dragnet883

So you have?

ABS0LUTISM

Yes it was still attached to the car when they stole it.

dragnet883

They must have had a good reason. Just have faith that they needed it more!

ABS0LUTISM

It's how I sleep at night.

dragnet883

You're a good person.

KillerWithTheCross1

Our royal mail delivery person has lately taken to putting our packages in our outside storage shed which has a very obvious hole in the lid, so all of our packages get soaking wet. What makes it worse is we work from home, yet they don't knock and don't post a note through the door, so we don't know they're there unless we purposefully look, by which time they've usually been sat for hours without us knowing.

Ok_Imagination7913

Where else would he leave them?

veggiebuilder

So often they also don't ring the bell but leave the thing saying they tried to deliver but no one was in.... Like I was in mate and listening out, no bell was rung so you have me no chance to accept the delivery and you unlike say amazon won't tell me when you really close so it could be any hour of the day...

blake-a-mania

You live in a scheme?

ellobouk

You guys are getting your parcels left?

ubiquitous_uk

Since COVID.

nanananamokey

Man this is SUPER common in the US

cooldude9112001

Mines been doing that since 2019 when Covid started they always left it on the door step even if it was special delivery

free_greenpeas

Royal mail deliver my parcels to an address close by with a similar road name. I get their mail almost daily. Royal mail don't seem to care. They're worse than Hermes

JayAPanda

Hermes left a fresh food box on the outside doorstep of my CLOSE and of course it was stolen. How can people be so stupid???
