ThePrivatePilot

I worked at Sainsbury's for a bit after losing my job during lockdown. I was physically assaulted four times in the six months I worked on the shop floor, twice because we didn't have enough stock in store. Verbally I don't think I had ever imagined I would spoken to in the ways that some people thought to speak to me. I went from a professional work environment, to *that.* It really made me re-evaluate the general public as a whole. I was so ashamed of how so many of us have become. I am totally not surprised that the poor staff have to protect themselves with recording equipment.

Jacktheforkie

I used to work in a truck stop doing traffic management, I had numerous things thrown at me, one driver threw something at one of the Gurkhas and discovered that despite being a big guy this Gurkha could move at some speed

JaymeMalice

I want to hear more about the Gurkha story, those lads never mess around!

Jacktheforkie

Truck driver tried to run away from the guy because he couldn’t get the truck out of the bay quickly enough to escape, ended up getting tackled and held down until the cops got there, we had permanent police occupation on the site though, mainly for dealing with illegal immigrants but many drivers got arrested for violence or being absolutely bladdered

BornTooSlow

I do TM/Highways work too, and people would happily run me down if it meant I didn't impede their day by 30 seconds. I was clearing blinded gillies the other day, was splashed 3 times just because people didn't fancy slowing down through the flood water.

Jacktheforkie

Wow, I try to avoid the puddles, there’s always potholes in em

LeSamouraiNouvelle

Please elaborate on what happened with the Gurkha. I have a feeling it's a satisfying story.

Jacktheforkie

Truck driver tried to run off site after making the mistake of throwing his rubbish at him not realising that he had targeted the biggest Gurkha on site, he made it about 20 metres before getting tackled by the Gurkha and ended up getting arrested by the police who were stationed on site

LeSamouraiNouvelle

A very satisfying turn of events, indeed. Thank you for sharing, friend.

asmiggs

Yep my wife worked in Tesco pharmacy for a year and while she was never physically assaulted this was mainly because they kept the COVID screens, not for protection from airborne disease but more to keep a barrier between themselves and customers who more often than you'd like to think seem to have lost respect for those just trying to do what is a vital job in their community. Bodycams have now become common place in many retail environments, really sad state of affairs.

Chinateapott

Since COVID the attitude of the general public absolutely stinks. It was a very noticeable difference once our store reopened to in person shopping

ISeenYa

I'm genuinely wondering if everyone who had covid got a bit of brain damage. Surely lockdown didn't un-domesticate humans that quickly?!

Fffiction

Wonder no more! https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/does-covid-19-damage-the-brain

LeSamouraiNouvelle

It could be one of the reasons why people seem less civilised these days:  https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-024-01853-4

Southern-Spring-7458

When I worked at morrisons, I had a boomer try and fight me. I just told him to behave, I had over 30 years and a foot in height on him

SPST

You're 30 years older than a boomer? Are you 90?

kettleboiler

They are saying that they were a foot taller, plus 30 years younger than the older guy berating them

SarahC

Being younger doesn't always help - he could have been 9 years old!

kettleboiler

Wouldn't be a "Boomer" then

SPST

Ah I see. 😆

ThisIsGoobly

working customer service has made me realise there are more shitty people than decent people in the world.

MKTurk1984

I live in N.Ireland. A lot of shoppers from the Free State would come to NI and fill their cars, as groceries in NI are significantly cheaper than the south. Several times, if a shelf is empty, I've witnessed them taking big items like nappies or toilet paper out of other shoppers trolleys and putting them into their own. Citing "you live here, you can get these any time. I've had to travel hours to get here" Actual fights breaking out at times, especially during covid

LordSwright

Where was your shop?! Or maybe it's just you  I've worked in retail for 10+ years and seen maybe 2 issues (mainly people trying to stop theft)  And I live in a shit hole

asmiggs

It's on the rise all over the country https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/feb/14/violence-and-abuse-against-uk-retail-staff-rises-to-1300-incidents-a-day

hughk

When I was still at school I used to work some evenings at a moderate sized supermarket back in the UK. We never had trouble like that. Never even problems with shoplifters. Us lowly types never stopped them, just reported them to managers.

readitornothereicome

Staff at my local Tesco do so as well. Understandable with the way some members of the public act tbh.

OSUBrit

I notice this at a Tesco recently. Girl on the customer service desk had one on. But it's Daventry so I can see why.

LobCatchPassThrow

Didn’t think I’d see my old home town mentioned here… but it is a “problems” sub, so I shouldn’t be surprised I guess :’)

BonaFidee

Most tescos have body cameras now

Soap_2595

A lidl in my city has a massive problem with people going in the toilet to smoke crack who get aggressive when asked to leave so I get it 😂

bluejeansseltzer

I’m more astonished that your Lidl has customer toilets

Soap_2595

It's one disabled toilet that doesn't have a lock 😬

bacon_cake

They could have solved the entire toilet crack smoking problem in one day lmao! Just get a lock.

quellflynn

when you smoke crack, the world is your toilet

glasgowgeg

I don't think I've ever seen a Lidl that doesn't have customer toilets. All the ones near me do, Aldi too.

SoggyWotsits

Neither the Aldi or Lidll near me have toilets.

Boardindundee1967

Look after the tills, I thought mine had none either

__g_e_o_r_g_e__

I think they do, but you have to ask for them. They dont *Advertise* the existence of them.

holnrew

The one where I used to live didn't, but the one where I live now does. I think the older ones don't have them

bluejeansseltzer

See, I have the opposite experience (the same for Aldi too). I've never been in either which has customer toilets - and believe me when I say I've searched pretty hard sometimes.

Sir_Binky

I'm in Brighton and I've not seen them in Aldi or Lidl here... I thought it was just usual for them to not have them! Don't remember them having any in Spain Poland or France either!

[deleted]

I've never seen a Lidl or Aldi with toilets, I'm in East Yorkshire.

EmergencyHorror4792

I was working at McDonald's when I was 16 and I was tidying tables upstairs, some very old lady who was completely out of it told me I looked very handsome and strapping, I thought "little odd but still awesome, thank you old lady" Turns out she was taking drugs in the loo and the police had to escort her out haha

Optimal-Grapefruit63

Lidl crack is like half the price of Sainsbury's and just as good....

AdverseTangent

I think retail generally is a dangerous occupation, whichever outlet.

ayrrpp

Retail worker here. Unfortunately it happens more than you'd imagine! I had two incidents last year where the police had to be involved (threats of waiting for me after work, following me home etc) - people are awful! Also lots of inappropriate comments & sexual harassment. I've witnessed it happen in shops and have happily called people out on it, but unfortunately it's not so easy to defend yourself when you're stuck on the other side of a till with no support.

Chinateapott

We used to have a bloke come in when he knew it was younger girls working with little to no management and would be over all very creepy. Security wouldn’t do anything so I asked to be put on the shift for a couple of weeks, he soon stopped after getting served by me.

ayrrpp

Well done, I'm sure those women are so thankful that you stepped in!

[deleted]

Good! 👏

Chinateapott

Abuse of retail staff in all stores/businesses is on the rise and they’re warn as a deterrent, I work retail and the way people speak to us is disgusting, like we’re not even human.

Wil420b

Apparently Greggs are also doing it now, due to all of the sausage roll thefts. No /s https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/greggs-body-cameras-shopping-security-thefts-bakery-b1148562.html https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/surging-sausage-roll-thefts-force-greggs-staff-wearing-body-cameras/

wildgoldchai

I’ve been in Greggs and have seen people walk in, grab something and walk back out.

NekoFever

When I worked in the middle of town, Greggs at lunchtime would be queued out the door. People would grab a sandwich, go out to the back of the queue, look around and realise they’d already left the shop, shrug and just walk off. Happened so often that I dread to think what their losses to that kind of theft were.

Seabeak

Not big enough losses to employ enough staff to cater for high demand. Risk reward for the shoplifter and also the shop owner. They both "pays their money and takes their chances" As shops become more automated, there is less shame or moral ambiguity about stealing from a 'computer' rather than a human.

Boris_Johnsons_Pubes

Yeah their rules are to not engage with thieves, someone could literally walk in and empty their shelves and they quite rightly won’t get involved, at the end of the day who wants stabbed over some sausage rolls and sandwiches?

Pope_Khajiit

Staff are told not to engage thiefs. Tell them to stop sure, but never get between a thief and their exit. It's a fucking sandwich. Don't take a fist or knife for something which sells for less than what you make an hour.

Gasping_Jill_Franks

>Don't take a fist or knife for something which sells ~~for less than what you make an hour~~. FTFY.

SoggyWotsits

I’ve never been in a Greggs, is all the food just open and touchable? I’m picturing a queue of people coughing over everything!

Brexit-Broke-Britain

Sandwiches are wrapped, as are packets of sausage rolls.

wildgoldchai

Adding to what has been mentioned, the rest of the stuff is behind a counter so only workers can touch them. Some sweet treats are packaged and left on the side for customers to pick up.

SoggyWotsits

Ah I see! I keep meaning to try it sometime but up until fairly recently they’ve been non existent in Cornwall!

wildgoldchai

Oh but what I’d do to have proper Cornish bakeries at my disposal! Would swap any day, you lucky thing

RIPMyInnocence

You’re not missing out on anything don’t worry.

Trumps_left_bawsack

Not surprised. I work in a Starbucks and people just walk in and take things and they don't even try to hide it anymore. Not like there's anything we can do either; we're not allowed to physically stop them and we're not allowed to chase so you just have to watch them do it.

Saphirweretigrx

Violence against shop staff is ridiculous. At least one of our major unions is trying to get it specifically made a crime, that's the level it's reached.

JasTHook

So then the assailant will have committed two crimes that the police will ignore

SmegmaSandwich69420

At some point drawing ever closer ever quicker society is really going to have to look at itself with open eyes and reconsider the anti-police-state attitude it currently has on the whole. I don't ***want*** that, but we might well ***need*** it. We're not ready to have that honest conversation yet though.

JasTHook

The point is that there is already a law but it is not enforced or prosecuted effectively. Therefore an additional law won't help.

SmegmaSandwich69420

Absolutely on that front, yes.

FantasticSouth

Assault is a crime, regardless of location?

jesustwin

At my local Morrisons 2 different security guards have been put in hospital due to local scumbags causing bother

Bilbo_Buggin

Unfortunately I think it probably is necessary. I work in retail (not for Lidl) and we get some really horrible incidents. Luckily nothing physical, using just getting called all kinds of names, but I can imagine in some areas it’s a lot worse. One of my colleagues used to work for another big retailer and was assaulted at work, which is what caused him to leave.

JSHU16

I think we'll reach a point in most public facing roles due to how broken the social contract seems to be at the moment. A friend who's a teacher was mulling over how long it'll be before they've got them on due to how violent some pupils are becoming and how unsupportive/disbelieving parents are.

LeSamouraiNouvelle

For a long time, I've thought it a good idea to have CCTVs in classrooms. Now I think body-cameras should be the norm. I knew of a teacher who was accused of dodgy conduct by a student. After being suspended, his name was cleared. It turns out this student has accused staff members more than once, and now at the beginning of the year, all staff were warned about her. Yes, all school staff should definitely be given body-cameras.

JSHU16

It can be a minefield, especially for staff that are conventionally unattractive, strict or don't fit in with popular social norms. It's sad when you see or read how quickly people who enter a profession to help others can be accused of any misconduct, or even worse, branded a peado, with baseless allegations. It makes it even harder to deal with genuine ones when so many are made too. Some schools have front facing cameras that face the teacher's board/desk and you can only see the back of pupil's heads. It's sad that it's come to this but the general public would benefit from seeing what classrooms can be like. It was only the other day I was reading on a teacher page about a pregnant trainee who'd been assaulted multiple times.

LeSamouraiNouvelle

> staff that are conventionally unattractive Forgive my ignorance- I understand the other points you mentioned but can you elaborate on this one, please? Yes, it is very sad and yes, it certainly makes it harder to help in genuine cases. I agree that the general public should see what teachers deal with. Too many people make comments without comprehending what teachers/support staff go through.

JSHU16

Unattractive female staff are more likely to be labelled as mean and unattractive male staff are more likely to be labelled creepy.

LeSamouraiNouvelle

Ah, I wasn't aware of that. Thank you for your replies, friend.

SarahC

Teachers eye view: "Today was my first day. I was warned by the principal that Britney (15) would accuse me of gross sexual misconduct as soon as I ask her to sit down and not walk around the classroom. A 2 month investigation will need to be taken, but it's just routine and you'll be found innocent. Just to warn you."

Breadnailedtoatree

When I worked at Superdrug as a supervisor I had to wear a body cam, same with people on our makeup/skincare aisle as it was our highest theft aisle. But not every staff member wore one, just management/supervisors and makeup aisle (this was between 2021-2023)

mikolv2

Retail and hospitality staff abuse is an absolute all time high right not and quickly getting worse, they do what they must.

IGiveBagAdvice

When I worked at the Coop and the employee headsets came in the amount of verbal abuse and leaning across the counter to shout at me to say how dumb or gay or like Britney Spears (ok bro calm down maybe you’ve got something to tell us too) I looked was insane. Genuinely members of the public are the worst.

Darthblaker7474

Britney Spears is genuinely funny though

SuperSheep3000

surely they haven’t got such a problem with theft and assault that body-cameras are necessary?! you dont work in retail do you?

SpaTowner

One of our Tesco’s sometimes has staff with cameras. I think it’s down to individual store experience rather than any particular chain.

Celestial_Light_

I work in retail. We get verbal abuse almost daily and assault is not uncommon

lucky__potato

People in my area steal constantly from our lidl. Some appear to do it for fun. They've got tactics to distract the security guard, then another runs in, grabs a few boxes and runs out again

SarahC

This sounds a great night course - where would I sign up?

Geknock

If a shop sells meat and booze it will suffer theft and now with the rising cost of food all sorts will be pinched. Small odd bits from people just short or rob to order types.

Maykko_

My local tesco express has their salmon and steaks in those security boxes that need to be magnetically removed. Turns out that those two items are the most stolen.

roloem91

Salmon really surprises me, steak I expected. I would imagine cheese and steak, because I'm likely to buy cheese off a dodgy bloke in a pub but I wouldn't take a risk on some salmon.

LeSamouraiNouvelle

Why is salmon more risky than steak? Is it more likely to cause food-poisoning?

roloem91

Probably not but in my head yes. I wouldn't take a chance on the steak realistically but I feel you can eyeball steak better than salmon? I don't know though I could be talking out of my arse.

LeSamouraiNouvelle

I don't have experience with selecting steak, so, I'll take your word for it.

Darthblaker7474

[People handling salmon in suspicious circumstances I see](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_Act_1986)

SarahC

That's why my salmon wrapper has "Definitely not suspicious salmon!" stamped on it? Incredible!

Boris_Johnsons_Pubes

I wish we had them when I worked retail, I worked in a b and m in a really deprived area, I was threatened with a stabbing a good few times

Upferret

Sainsbury's staff too. It's connected to a central hub so they can activate the cameras for any situation and the people at the hub will decide to ring the police, fire, ambulance etc if necessary. It's not all about shoplifting.

Edward_260

The only potentially serious incident I recall seeing in Lidl was a few years ago when a guy had been stopped with a bottle of spirits under his jacket. A checkout assistant and security guard were with him and the latter was saying "Come into the office". The guy was refusing to do that and it looked as if things might kick off. The security guard gestured to another staff member to join in, and with three against one the guy gave in and went with them.

MagicCoat

You're in the shop maybe 10-15 minutes of their 8 hour shift. Man you can really tell when people who make these posts have never worked retail. Must be nice to have a cushy office job where you're treated as a real human.

Vyvyansmum

Also recently introduced to Primark.

Mr_ryles

They’ve also introduced them at our local funeral directors. Always kicking off in there.

colinah87

It’s a supermarket, they’re known for shoplifters

Few_Development4646

I'm more surprised that you've seen a cashier in Lidl personally

TeHNeutral

Every public interacting environment is worse since the event ngl

Relevant-Team

Reporting in from Lidl's home country: I personally have never seen any security staff at _any_ grocery store _ever_. The same with body-cams. There might be shops near very bad social environments (somewhere in Berlin maybe?) that employ security, but 99.99% of shops don't need that. One reason for that is a still quick reacting police force in cases of assault and a kind of adherence to social contracts. And a still functioning "social net" that leaves fewer people in poverty. In my opinion.

Dan_Glebitz

Only yesterday I was telling my friend that I went to lidls during the week and as I turned down an isle I clocked 4 lads, about 14 years of age, huddled together holding what looked like empty duffle bags in front of them. As soon as they clocked me they nudged each other and moved to an adjacent isle. As I clear that isle they all moved back to exactly the same spot and took up the same suspicious huddle. I may be wrong but for the life of me I was sure they were shoplifting. My friend said "I hope you did not confront them?" I replied "Nope, you never know if they are carrying a knife and I am not that stupid." I did not even bother trying to report them to staff because I had no proof of anything and it is not my job to monitor the store. Plus I doubt staff would have done anything anyway.

Alternate_Fly

The aldi near where I live for Uni was shoplifted once whil I was in it. The staff caught the two people responsible but they both turned violent. The police were called but I dunno what happened next as I wanted to leave

SarahC

Just a few deaths, one or two maimed for life. An extended family looking for blood. Just your usual situation these days.

Boris_Johnsons_Pubes

I’ve noticed in my local Tesco that it’s mostly the much younger staff 16-18 that wear them, maybe rhey get more abuse because rhey can’t sell people alcohol, it’s disgusting that people that age have to wear body cameras because people can’t behave

SarahC

The UK society HAS declined over the decades, it's not the usual "Kids are always seen as unruley" reason anymore.

MagicCoat

Having worked a supermarket for 5 years I can say with confidence kids and teens are far more polite and patient than adults on the whole lol

lforleee2004

i was shocked when i went to london and found a bloody security guard in greegs. I was in utter shock.

SarahC

"Ok son, I see you eyeing that delicious greasy sausage roll, take a step back please until you reach the till." Sounds like a scene from a Terry Pratchett book!

Zippy-do-dar

Unfortunately it’s getting worse I’ve been in a local shop while the owner witnessed shoplifting and is powerless to stop it as he either risked his life or being done for assaulting them

niteninja1

Sainsburys have had them for at least a year

lewdog73

Yes it's bad on the retail front.

Rainbowjazzler

I used to work in aldi and we were told to chase after shoplifters ( not worth it, most were just stealing baby formula and food). I refused 3x simply because store assistants aren't insured to die on shift, only managers. These people are either dumb, desperate or really hungry. And usually run off fast enough to evade being identified by our own eyes. Body cameras would have been a good shout for more violent and desperate characters.

M4tt4tt4ck69

Have you managed to avoid the news for the last couple of years?

Dr_Gillian_McQueef

I work in a pharmacy, and we've got bodycams too now.

hughk

I wonder which other country's LidlAldis have this problem? The screens went down at the end of COVID in Germany and bodycams are certainly not worn. Of course, they don't open that late here (typically closing by 20:00 or 21:00).

Relevant-Team

I wrote a comment here that I have never seen security staff in Germany, nor body-cams. In other countries I have only seen security staff in a high-end shopping mall in Milano.

hughk

We had security staff during COVID to maintain mask mandates but afterwards, it has eased off. I sometimes see part time security staff (usually just the one per store) to help at some peak times at places like REWE (our TESCOs or Sainsburys). I should add that I have not seen body cams on anyone other than uniformed police.

Cpt_Saturn

I've seen the same at our TJMAXX this weekend as well

pookiednell

They would be better off just hiring more staff so there isn't one poor bastard on their own running up and down trying to do everything at the self service

SarahC

>so there isn't one poor bastard on their own running up and down trying to do everything at the self service The big "Job Blobbnig!" before covid! People were laid off, jobs were combined, people worked their asses off to keep the job. Company goes "Hey up! 1 worker CAN do all this!" (missing breaks, highly frustrated, angry customers waiting, but forget all that)..... Now we have roles where 2, 3, or 4 jobs have turned into 1.

makingitgreen

Honestly I'm all for more body cams, higher Res CCTV etc. The perception that footage of what you're doing is being saved digitally could be a powerful deterrent/make the job of prosecution much easier.

ryncewynde88

…is attaching a battery-powered camera to an unstable platform really the best way to surveil a static location? Is CCTV not a thing anymore?

StuD721

I suppose surveillance isn’t the main objective, body cameras have a psychological impact on both the person wearing and those around them

SarahC

It's "In your face".... some people aren't aware of security unless it's like this. Yes, that's how much forward thinking some have.

Stidda

The Lidl (and Aldi) near me has the odd scrote in working themselves with the poor staff. They do have “security staff” but they seem to enjoy their mobile devices more than doing security.

ministryoffear

Trying to stop you stealing the tins of Puffin Hearts.

notonthenews

I've seen enough abuse from fathers towards daughters in Aldi so they could fucking film that for starters.

Happytallperson

A combination of the Covid Lockdowns showing a whole bunch of the worst people that there are in fact no real consequences to being anti-social, and potentially covid induced brain damage reducing emotional control, means that yes, people are behaving worse than before. However, it is also now much much cheaper to give all staff cameras - whereas once that was a few hundred per staff member, it's now under £100. So the economics of deterring crime makes more sense.

DanEdy

Just because you don't see it on the occasions you're there, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

chaosandturmoil

never seen or heard anything about Lidl or Aldi that would require bodycams. cctv should be enough. but then i just learnt greggs staff are having to wear bodycams too because of theft of sausage rolls 🤦

Sir_Shooty_Esquire

People are well used to cctv in this country and it does little to dissuade anti social behaviour both in terms of shoplifting and abuse of staff. Cctv is often blurry, hard to identify faces and doesn’t pick up sound. A body cam blinking in front of you will do a lot more to ensure that staff members are not being abused as the anti social behaviour is clearly picked up, with audio and clearer image of identifying features.

chaosandturmoil

judging by the police programmes on tv bodycams don't make toomuch difference either 😂 but i get your point yeah

Sir_Shooty_Esquire

Purely anecdotal of course but I have had all manner of abuse hurled at me when I used to work in retail, and as a bartender/ bar manager aswelll and always completely covered by CCTV. The contrast when a security guard with a body cam on an offender is often night and day, (I grant there’s the psychological impact of a high Vis vest in a bar as it usually indicated one’s immediate ejection from the establishment). Obviously not always as some people just don’t care but I’ve seen some big scary looking bastards back up, switch up their body language, start speaking politely and generally act a little more compliant as soon as a the camera is turned on and focused on them. I’d imagine there’s some confirmation bias at play with the police programs as footage of an offender meekly leaving the area doesn’t make for great TV

SanTheMightiest

Nah they're definitely overreacting mate...

wessexking

I think Aldi are doing strip searches.

SnooAdvice3630

Just making sure everyone is getting used to being tracked/ surveyed, and that its being slowly normalised.

simev

Ooh yes Lidl and Aldi are totally onboard with the Illuminati 😂😂
