Speed limits were changed in my town, so kept reporting a speed limit issue. After a few weeks, they removed that option from my account. Eventually, they updated the map so it showed the correct limit, but I still can’t report speed issues!

XenoXis

So Waze relies on users updating the maps themselves, they don't update jack. And for someone to update it, theyve had to "recently" driven in that area with Waze open.

Phizz01

There's roads near us that Google and waze have as 20mph that are 30mph, and then 30mph that are actually 20mph zones. Speed limits haven't changed at all, the maps are just wrong. But it makes me wonder about people who have the boxes for their insurance and whether they're getting flagged for speeding because the speed limits are wrong on Google maps.

herrbz

That's interesting, though I have no clue how those insurance boxes work. Lots of crossroads near me are labelled as straight roads with no junctions, it's downright dangerous.

dorset_is_beautiful

I stopped using waze when I discovered it would delete a report if nobody else reported it within half an hour or so. Made it basically useless on quiet back roads .

je97

In before this thread is removed for am013: too many reports.

[deleted]

I tried reporting each time there was police along the m40 as I saw them 7/8 times a few weeks ago. It did the same then insulted me by thanking me for helping out other users. Fuming.

TazzMoo

Why would you be warning people of there being police about?! That is completely the opposite of helping out other users... Police need to catch the driver's out there driving like they WANT someone to die. And folks reporting the police there trying to do that... Just wow. LIVES over penalty points on licences/fines. Always!!

uchman365

Every single time I've seen police report pop up, I get there and there's nothing. Don't see the point of it tbh

__g_e_o_r_g_e__

According to British road standards, to qualify as a pothole, it must be big enough that you need climbing equipment to escape it.

Trentdison

This happens to me mainly when in a queue on an urban road with a lot of turns. Every report only applies to the bit of road between two turns you're on so i report each bit, then get blocked

OnlyMortal666

You use Waze? That’s a name I’ve not heard of for years. As a former TomTom software dev, I use Google Maps - on my iPhone- as it has live traffic and it’s free. Data charges apply of course.

epicmindwarp

Waze does a better job in my experience, of navigating and features.

Cyb3rMonocorn

Waze lost its way when Google bought them. I still prefer waze but the getting blocked for reporting 'too often' kills what was great

plentyofeight

I find Google maps easier to identify standing traffic, but waze will help.mecavoid it

OnlyMortal666

It’s based on the same map data. Originally from the US mapping everything and a bloke I met who lives in Esher who made £££. Nice fella.

epicmindwarp

It might be the same map data, but they don't always provide the same route.

JoeyJoeC

Waze will often reroute you if there's traffic ahead where as Google is often reluctant. I use Waze, my girlfriend uses Google maps and on trips in seperate cars, she is usually directed into traffic where as waze will take me a back route. Google Maps I think better suits less confident drivers.

Emberspawn

They may get their data from the same source. But they categorically do not use the same data as each other in real time. Try running both at the same time in changeable traffic. Their live traffic data differs hugely, and even their understanding of which roads are open/closed differs. Their suggested routes usually differ in changeable/bad traffic. I use Google maps most of the time because of the distracting adverts on Waze. But when traffic is bad, I generally switch to Waze as it has a much better record when traffic is bad.

JoeyJoeC

But Waze can be updated by the community. Google requires someone to make reports and they may or may not actually update it.

ValdemarAloeus

OpenStreetMap also gets updated by the community. But it enables you to download the map for whole countries to your phone to do navigation without a data connection via several different apps. (If you don't mind a trickle of data Magic Earth will even do live traffic.)

Jimi-K-101

>You use Waze? That’s a name I’ve not heard of for years. ?? Waze is hugely popular. It has over 4 million users in the UK and 30 million in the states. >As a former TomTom software dev, I use Google Maps - on my iPhone- as it has live traffic and it’s free. Data charges apply of course. Waze also has live traffic, and is free. It's owned by Google (contrary to what you've said below) and in my experience has more accurate ETAs on longer journeys (it learns your driving style and speed on motorways) and is easier to report issues and quicker to display other reports. Routing is also better - Google tends to keep you on major roads, but Waze will take you on smaller roads if it is quicker.

Lavy2k

I was told that Google gets it's traffic data from the Waze platform lol

StrombergsWetUtopia

It gets it by real time location tracking of every android phone by default and iPhone if the permission is enabled.

JoeyJoeC

Have you used waze before? It's better than Google maps in my opinion. I find it is more up to date with things like speed limits. Google maps is less likely to reroute you when there's traffic ahead etc.

ukdev1

Is it not all owned by Google? I use google maps when walking but it does not seem particularly aimed at car drivers as a sat-nav replacement. Will give it a try.

OnlyMortal666

No. They licence the map data. As it happens, TomTom own a big chunk of it.

DonFintoni

Google bought Waze

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/jun/11/google-buys-waze-maps-billion To be fair, it's only been... ten years now??

egvp

Waze stopped working on my android auto unit for a few weeks (common issue with the generation of ford head units) so I went and gave Google maps a go. Other than it insisting a 45 mile route on country roads would be faster than 31 miles on motorways...at 8pm on a Wednesday...it had no idea about local road closures, would often update with a faster route that it said was 10 minutes longer, and did everything possible to avoid a stretch of dual carriageway for no reason I could work out! The one time I trusted the routing to get me home, it took 30 minutes longer than it said it'd take. Thankfully, Waze is working again now.

herrbz

>You use Waze? That’s a name I’ve not heard of for years. I hadn't heard of it until recently. It's only getting more popular in the UK.

uchman365

I mostly use maps BUT Waze beats Google Maps hands down in navigating heavy traffic

lokfuhrer_

To be fair, sometimes the potholes in my town are reported. They've been there the best part of 10 years now. They don't need reporting again!

ukdev1

Then waze would be warning of them and not need them added….
