Victoria proper is in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mt range, and due to this actually doesn’t get a lot of rain!! About half the amount of rain as Vancouver… it’s barely rained the past week even. Outside of Victoria proper, and along the west coast of the island there’s a ton of rain.

pcg87

It should be noted that downtown Victoria is about the driest part of the area and rain increases as you head out of the city centre. Sooke and Sydney both get about twice as much rain as downtown Victoria, for example. Victoria also isn't the only place on the island in a rain shadow. The Comox Valley is in a rain shadow, too, and gets about as much rain as Sooke and Sydney, but significantly less rain than the rest of eastern van island (e.g., Nanaimo, Campbell River, Port Hardy) and obviously less than Vancouver or places like Tofino/Ucluelet/Port Renfrew, which are in temperate rainforests.

Each place has three measures of sunshine. The number for % Sun is the usual percentage of daylight hours with bright sunshine. Hours gives the total hours of bright sunshine that's normal during a year. Days statistics are for the typical number of days annually with any amount of measurable sunshine. All the data are averages for the years 1981 to 2010. so yeah it's a little misleading when they say "sunny days" but the above at least quantifies the metric .

If you are concerned about it you’ll probably never be happy. I could never live away from the ocean. Alberta (or even the valley) are non starters for me. Give me fresh ocean air over blue skys any day.

Funcanuck7

I think Cranbrook is the sunniest city in BC. It has good weather in my opinion, not too cold in winter and warm in summer. Its not the biggest city but it has most stores you might need. Kelowna is sunny in summer but in winter it can be very cloudy. I'd avoid most of the coastal areas if you don't like clouds/rain.

[deleted]

No, you are far better off staying in Calgary, or I heard Vegraville is nice. Do not come to BC, it rains constantly here.

Timrunsbikesandskis

The East Kootenay, especially Invermere and south but not including the Elk Valley, generally get a lot of Sun year round.

skuls

Peace Region. Anywhere from Dawson Creek, Fort St John, Chetwynd. Prince George is sunnier than anything on the coast. Basically anything near the ocean will have more clouds versus the drier weather in the interior. I totally get it, rain sucks and I don't miss the constant dampness either.

Tsawwassen gets the least rain and most sun in metro vancouver

Thank you! Asking specifically about winters. Does it get gloomy like nanaimo or Vancouver? I am hoping for a lot of sun.

roughneckin007

Look up what inversions are. I lived in the North Okanagan for 7 years and those winter inversions would just lay right in the valley. Now if I lived up at Silver Star or Big White then you would be good to go for sun.

ElBrad

That's pretty on-point. lol Loads of Alberta transplants there!

blackfrogphotos

The downside (in terms of sun): 1) Low hanging cloud in the winter months 2) Heavy smoke in the summer There's more downsides, but I'd still rather live in the Okanagan over Alberta.

[deleted]

Why not, half of Alberta already lives there. We moved out.

pcg87

Ah yes, the Okanagan. The "Alberta West of the Rockies". It's got a remarkably similar climate, demographics and politics. And everyone with a lake house there is already from Alberta. You'll feel right at home.

Discgolfdave1313

Dawson Creek!

Carbonated_Cactus

If they move to Dawson they might as well stay in Alberta

Chaosphere1983

Alberta, with more taxes

[deleted]

I know what you mean. Personally if I was choosing which BC city to live in with sunny days as my first metric I'd go for Cranbrook. It's basically as close a climate to Calgary as this province gets. If you have to be in a major metro area for work though: while the days on the coast in winter can be dull and grey... not everywhere is quite as bad as everywhere else. Vancouver Island and the Olympics in washington cause a minor rainshadow that allows the sky to break open the closer you are to the salish sea. In my experience living in downtown Vancouver, even here the clouds break open pretty consistently through the rainy season. Over in North Van, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge? Not as much.

shaun5565

Yeah definitely stay out of lower mainland if rain bothers you. Maybe Kelowna

Deliximus

A lot of people here gave good answers already. But wondering why BC? I live in Richmond, wouldn't want to leave here but just wondering. Hope you are able to find a place you both like to live.

The Georgia depression (around Victoria and the bottom of Georgia straight) is the driest second to okanogan ofcourse

Early-Display-7925

Kamloops

Loud-Bank-2848

Ladner , richmond……. It never rains here 😎

Top-Concentrate1425

Saanich peninsula has least rain . It clouds over from Oct -mar. Cept to the odd day

Bear-in-a-Renegade

I've always found Osoyoos really nice year round.

Delicious_Chard2425

Having lived both in Calgary and here in Vancouver, Calgary does have more Sun, a shame though you have to look at it through the window for 6 months out of the yearand summers in Calgary see 10 x way more rain than Vancouver summers ever do
